EVERTON SEASON DIARY
February 1999
|
-
28th: Incredibly, Everton received no yellow cards at all yesterday
their first card-free match in the entire season!
-
27th: Everton struggle to a 1-1 draw with
Wimbledon at Goodison Park after a great headed
goal from Franny Jeffers. Everton were without Don Hutchison,
who is suspended, and Ibrahima Bakayoko, who has been called up by Ivory
Coast in the African Nations Cup, plus 10 injured first-team players. Newboy
Peter Degn caught the flu and
missed the match.
-
February 26th: Tony Grant joins Everton's ridiculous injury list,
pulling his hamstring in training today.
-
24th: Everton will be heading to Newcastle United in the FA
Cup Quarter-finals on 7th March after the Toon beat Blackburn
Rovers 1-0 at Ewood Park. Meanwhile, Jamie Milligan captained the England
U-18 v Germany at Stoke's Britannia Ground. Francis Jeffers came of for the
last 15 mins.
-
23rd: Young prospect
Francis Jeffers is
featured in an ITV documentary about Lilleshall: The World at Their
Feet.
-
22nd: Peter Degn
has actually been signed on by Everton and transferred for a nominal fee
of £200,000. Also, the Everton Supporters Alliance has gathered over
10,000 signatures to a petition demanding that
Peter Johnson ends his disastrous
involvement with Everton Football Club.
-
21st: More suspension horror for the FA Cup Quarter-finals as
Richard Dunne joins the list of Badboys after getting
his 5th yellow card of the season yesterday.
-
February 20th: Everton have lots of chances but cannot repeat
the form of last Wednesday, and eventually fall to a one-goal defeat at
Leeds United. That makes it just 47½ years
since we last won a league match there.
-
19th: Everton withdraw their appeal over Ollie Dacourt's 11th
booking: the video of the incident shows Dacourt making the fractional initial
contact with Boro's Paul Gascoigne.
-
18th: The downside to last night's great victory is suspension
for Everton Badboys, Ollie Dacourt (11 Yellows)
and Michael Ball (8 yellows). Both will miss the FA Cup 6th Round tie,
although Everton are appealing Ollie's on the grounds that the culprit was
really Tony Grant. Everton have signed a pre-contract agreement with Danish
midfielder, Peter Degn, who
will join the club in July, on a Bosmanite free transfer from Åarhus.
-
17th: The rearranged home match against
Middlesbrough provides a fantastic filip to
Evertonians as The Toffees run up a tremendous FIVE-goal victory!
David Weir makes his debut
as a sub.
-
16th: Everton's FA Youth Cup campaign
totters a little with a desperate late equalizer at Sheffield Wednesday in
the FA Youth Cup 5th Round. Meanwhile, Walter Smith has reverted to type,
signing yet another central defender,
David Weir, from Hearts for
£250k.
-
February 15th: Reports suggest that
Bill Kenwright is getting
closer to finalizing the financial package for Peter Johnson's consideration.
-
14th: In the FA Cup 6th Round, Everton are drawn away to either
Blackburn Rovers or Newcastle United, who slugged out a 0-0 draw today and
now replay on the 24th. Don
Hutchison misses the Wimbledon (h) match after picking up his 8th
yellow card of the season yesterday.
-
13th: Everton produce a much improved performance in the FA
Cup 5th Round against Coventry City, running
out 2-1 winners with well-taken goals from
Franny Jeffers and
Johnny Oster.
-
12th: Word is that Bakayoko will be dropped to the bench, and
Jeffers will retain his place for tomorrow's Cup-tie. Marco Materazzi is
still suspended and 10 (yes, TEN!) players in the Everton
Squad are out injured.
-
11th: Anders Limpar
(is he still playing?) has joined MLS team Colorado Rapids in the USA.
Gareth Farrelly (remember
him?) underwent exploratory surgery on his knee yesterday in an effort to
find out what's wrong with it.
-
February 10th: Tommy
Myhre has an excellent game in goal for Norway as they stifle Italy in
a 0-0 stalemate.
-
9th: The rearranged Reserves match
at Aston Villa has been postponed due to a frozen pitch. Gareth Farrelly
has now been withdrawn from the Ireland B side but John Oster is expected
to play for the Welsh B team. Francis Jeffers, Jamie Milligan and Carl
Regan are in the England U-18 squad to play France; Steve Simonsen plays
in goal for the England U-21 squad but Michael Ball is rested; Danny
Cadamarteri is ill and was withdrawn.
-
8th: The Echo / Daily Post is claiming that Richard Dunne has accrued
5 yellow cards and will miss the Wimbledon match. The
ToffeeWeb Badboy Statistician is not so sure...
he thinks its only 4.
-
7th: Franny
Jeffers makes his full debut for Everton in front of the Sky TV cameras
at Derby County, and sets up a nice goal for Nick
Barmby, but Walter Smith's negativity dominates as Everton fail to sit
successfully on that meagre one-goal lead, eventually going down 1-2 to a
brace from Deon Burton.
-
6th: Ten first-team players are ruled out of tomorrow's match:
Cadamarteri & Materazzi (suspended); Cleland (suspended &
injured); Bilic, Branch, Short, Ward, Phelan, Williamson, Parkinson
(injured).
-
February 5th: Everton shareholders have asked the Premier League
to investigate Peter Johnson's takeover of the club in 1994, citing a conflict
of interest over his simultaneous holding in Tranmere Rovers.
-
3rd: The depleted Everton Squad suffers
another blow as Michael Branch
goes down with a recurrence of his hamstring injury.
-
2nd: A big day for the young guns as Everton smash Swindon
Town 5-1 in the FA Youth Cup 4th Round Replay
and Francis Jeffers bagged a hat-trick. Meanwhile, Everton Shareholders
Association are proposing a share split in the form of a rights issue at
£500 each.
-
1st: Peter Johnson has
friends in high places... The deadline for him to resolve his dual ownership
of Everton and Tranmere Rovers has been extended for a second
time. Meanwhile, Everton Reserves catch the
goal-famine, falling 0-1 at Leeds United.
