EVERTON SEASON DIARY
August 1999

« July 1999 Full Season Diary September 1999 »

 AUGUST 1999

  • Aug 31: In their second match, Everton Reserves drew 2-2 with Bradford City at the Auto Quest Stadium, Widnes. Read our exclusive report. Meanwhile, Richard Dunne carries much of the blame for letting Yugoslavia score their first goal in a 2-0 win over Ireland's U-21 team.
  • Aug 30: Francis Jeffers and Richard Dunne have both been added to their respective U-21 International squads for upcoming games this week.

  • Aug 29: Walter Smith will doubtless be pillored by the asinine idiots at the FA after daring to speak the truth about Andy D'Urso's diabolical refereeing performance yesterday. Richard Dunne is expected to miss Everton's next match, away to Sheffield Wednesday.

  • Aug 28: Everton's Under-19 team got off to a good start in the FA Premier Academy League, beating Sheffield Wednesday 2-0. John Collins returned against Derby County, but new Premiership referee Andy D'Urso made himself the focal point as he sent off Richard Dunne for two yellow card offences in the first half, and went on to caution 7 other players. Derby scored after the break and held on despite strong Everton pressure to win 1-0. Earlier, Everton were drawn away to Oxford United in the 2nd Round, 1st Leg of the Worthington League Cup, to be played on or around 15 September.

  • Aug 27: Four of Everton's Scottish contingent – Weir, Collins, Gemmill & Hutchison – have been called up to the national squad for upcoming games against Bosnia and Estonia.
  • Aug 26: Portuguese international midfielder Abel Xavier, born in Mozambique, is due to arrive on Merseyside from PSV Eindhoven today for a week-long trial at Everton.

  • Aug 25:  Everton appear to have hit a rare vein of consistency, banging in another four goals against Wimbledon, and jumping up to seventh in the League, as joint top-scorers with Manchester United.
  • Aug 24: Dave Watson is again reported ready to return to the Everton side, this time against Wimbledon tomorrow night. John Collins is ruled out through suspension and Michael Ball may be named as one of the substitutes.
  • Aug 23: September 2 is the deadline set by Peter Johnson for bid submissions for his 68% holding in the club. Bids so far received include one tabled by vice chairman Bill Kenwright and one from fan group Investors in Everton.

  • Aug 22: Former Everton player Adrian Heath, now manager of Sheffield United, is reported to be considering a bid for transfer-listed Michael Branch, Mitch Ward, and Gareth Farrelly.

  • Aug 21: Everton clinched their first win of the season with a 4-1 win against Southampton at Goodison Park. The Everton goals came from Gough, Jeffers, Campbell and an own goal from Lundekvam. Former Everton captain Kevin Ratcliffe has resigned as manager of Chester City after a five-year association. He is apparently unhappy at the departure of Chester's former chief executive Bill Wingrove.

  • Aug 20: Don Hutchison's failure to settle a contract extension has reportedly attracted the interest of Glasgow Rangers manager Dick Advocaat. Rangers may be prepared to offer £3 million for the Scottish international. Meanwhile, Walter Smith has decided against making an offer for trialist Ronnie Ekelund.

  • Aug 19: Dave Watson looks as if he may be ready to return to the side for this weekend's game against Southampton having missed the last couple of games through injury.

  • Aug 18: Everton teenagers Damian Curran, an outside left, and John Lester, a central midfielder, have been handed professional contracts by Everton.

  • Aug 17: Slaven Bilic is enjoying life in Split, whilst Everton continue to pay his huge wages. Special training with a special trainer... before he makes a run at another deal with 'Appy 'Arry Redknap.

  • Aug 16: A familiar-looking Everton Reserves team travelled to Newcastle for the first game of their season in the new FA Reserves Premier League, nd tonked the Toonies by 3-0 with two goals from Danny Cadamarteri, and one from Phil Jevons. Read our exclusive match report.

  • Aug 15: If he does not hear something soon from Peter Johnson (who claims there are at least three other bidders), Bill Kenwright will withdraw his informal bid that would reportedly pay Johnson £19M for his 68% stake in EFC.

  • Aug 14: Everton failed miserably to take advantage of two spawny penalties, both converted by Unsworth, as Tottenham Hotspur grabbed a late winner in a competitive 3-2 tussle at White Hart Lane.
  • Aug 13: Due to Peter Johnson's continued flouting of league rules, the Football League have put Andy Williamson, the League's Director of Competitions, in to oversee the running of Tranmere Rovers, who have been banned from conducting any more transfer deals with Everton. Yesterday, an Everton Reserves team including three foreign trialists played Tranmere Rovers reserves behind closed doors at Bellefield, winning 1-0 by a goal from Phil Jevons.

  • Aug 12: More malicious shenanigans from the Red Echo, as they make a straight-faced claim – instantly denied – that Formula 1 supremo, Bernie Ecclestone is bidding £30M for Everton. How many red herrings is that now???  After leaping firmly to the top of our Everton Badboy table with a double yellow card at Villa Park, John Collins will now miss the home match v Wimbledon.

  • Aug 11: Everton traveled to Aston Villa where it was back to normal service as another defensive line-up fails to score, while Villa score three, and Collins is Sent Off!!! Francis Jeffers, who has wisely come to his senses and withdrawn his transfer request, came on with just 17 mins to go: what a waste.
  • Aug 10: The Everton U-19 team went to Tranmere today and beat them 5-2. Visit our Under-19 page for full line-up, scorers, and brief match report. A Wirral businessman and friend of Peter Johnson, Gerry White is reported to be planning a rival bid for some of Johnson's Everton shares. Everton are reportedly giving a trial to 28-year-old French defender Philippe Brinquin, who plays for First Division side Rennes. Everton are meanwhile in discussions over the possible signing of trialist Ronnie Ekelund...
  • Aug 9: Bill Kenwright has made another Soundbyte Soliloquy about being in the final stages before making a bid for Peter Johnson's shares. But there has been no bid yet.Aug 9: Francis Jeffers claims its not about money: "I don't expect to walk into the team but I wasn't used much in pre-season and with a few other things it has left me wondering whether I'm wanted." Not too convincing, Franny. Get your head sorted.

  • Aug 8: With a spirited performance against European Champions and Treble winners, Manchester United, Everton sneak a 1-1 draw in the closing stages after a great headed own-goal by Jaap Stam!
  • Aug 7: In view of Peter Johnson's ownership of Everton and Tranmere the game's ruling bodies have decreed that players transferred between the clubs will need the prior approval of the Premier League and Football League. An independent consultant will work with Tranmere's board, and all Rover's transactions will require the approval of the Football League.
  • Aug 6: The season has not even started but Walter Smith has already got major problems. Francis Jeffers apparently wants a lot more money, and probably will not start against Manchester United: he is not happy. He is so unhappy, he has asked for a transfer! David Poppleton, a less well-known figure from Jeffers' FA Youth Cup winning team, has gone to Lincoln City on a 3-month loan.
  • Aug 5: Mark Pembridge appears to have finally been signed, for a fee of around £800k. And Peter Reid has finally secured the transfer of John Oster to Sunderland for £1.1M. Ronnie Ekelund has stuck around taking his trial into a second week.
  • Aug 4: The latest on Slaven Bilic is that he now wants to go home to Hajduk Split, and is apparently willing to "slash" his astronomical wages in half to make it happen.  Still no firm news on the signing of Mark Pembridge, who had his medical today. Peter Reid is still pursuing John Oster but his valuations are too low.

  • Aug 3: Everton are expected to sign Benfica's unwanted Welshman, Mark Pembridge, today or tomorrow for a fee of £850k or thereabouts. Tonight, Everton play host to PSV Eindhoven in the last pre-season match. Kick Off: 8pm BST (19h00 GMT). Meanwhile, Mick O'Brien has joined Torquay.

  • Aug 2: Craig Short completed his £2.1M transfer deal to Blackburn Rovers. The initial fee is £1.75M, rising based on appearances. Meanwhile, an Everton XI comprised of numerous transfer-listed Blues defeated Burscough 5-2.

  • Aug 1: Its silly-season Sunday, so believe these rumours it if you must:

    • Craig Short's move has fallen through – he is carrying a calf injury;

    • Tony Grant has been rejected by NEC Nijmegen (who thought he was a striker!) and will now join Man City for £250k;

    • Mark Pembridge's move from Benfica will be completed "shortly";

    • Mark Draper of Aston Villa is Walter Smith's next transfer target;

    • And, of course, Francis Jeffers is off to Arsenal.

    • Oh, and Big Dunc (who's ugly mug fills the August page of Everton's official calendar) is crocked – again! That one may actually be true!!!
