EVERTON SEASON DIARY
September 1999

« August 1999 Full Season Diary October 1999 »

 SEPTEMBER 1999

  • Sept 30: Everton have numerous injury doubts, but Dave Watson appears to be the only player who is definitely out for Saturday's clash with Coventry City.
  • Sept 29: Everton Reserves trounced Bolton Wanderers 6-2  last night, with new loan-man Tommy Johnson grabbing one and making two for his new club.

  • Sept 28: Everton racked up an amazing £10.7M loss over last fiscal year ending May 1999. Big pay-outs to Kendall's departing management team didn't help, but sales of key players last summer effectively redressed the balance. And Everton Badboy Francis Jeffers's heated reaction to being unfairly restrained by some big red oaf will mean a 3-match suspension that takes in Arsenal, Leeds, and Middlesbrough.

  • Sept 27: Everton beat Liverpool 1-0 with an early goal from Kevin Campbell in tonight's fiercely contested derby game, which saw Francis Jeffers and two Liverpool players sent off. Also, Everton are giving a week's trial to Swiss midfielder Antonio Esposito. The 26-year-old is out of contract at his current club Extramedura and, because he holds an Italian passport, he will not require a work permit.

  • Sept 26:  An independent documentary on Granada TV at 6:15pm tonight (Sunday) will feature Joe Parkinson as one of three players suffering long-term Injury Time. The sad news – often rumoured by those in the know – is that Joe Parkinson is close to losing his 3-yr battle to rebuild his knee and his career as a midfield stalwart.

  • Sept 25: Everton slip a place to 8th after Leicester get a good win over Aston Villa, with Tony Cottee scoring again. Results & Table. Meanwhile, Everton Under-19s continue their unbeaten run with a 1-0 win over Aston Villa.

  • Sept 24: Everton have brought Celtic striker Tommy Johnson to Goodison Park on a three month loan deal, with a view to a permanent switch.

  • Sept 23: Walter Smith plays the fringers with the express purpose of avoiding injuries? And Nick Barmby caught a knee injury in the process of trying to liven things up. Good thinking, Wally!
  • Sept 22: Smith proves the thin depth of his squad as a reserve team crash out of the Worthington League Cup by losing the return leg of the 2nd Round tie 0-1 to Oxford United.
  • Sept 21: Peter Kilfoyle, MP for Walton, has reported Peter Johnson to the Department of Trade and Industry for his questionable dealings in the football business. Well, that should create a fine stir in Whitehall...

  • Sept 20: John Moores, the Liverpool director and son of Everton's legendary custodian, Sir John Moores, has admitted that selling his Everton shares to Peter Johnson was a mistake.

  • Sept 19: A rampant West Ham United, unbeaten so far this season, visited Everton in the rearranged Premiership meeting, and went down 1-0 to a goal from Francis Jeffers. YES!!!.

  • Sept 18: The excellent record of Everton's Under-19s continued today away to Newcastle United, where the geordies were trounced 4-0, with Dempsey instrumental in all four Everton goals.
  • Sept 17: The week of the Big Bid from Billy Boy is up, and – surprise, surprise – No Bid. The respective share valuations by Kenwright and Johnson differ by about 75%, or £15M, whichever way you want to cut it.

  • Sept 16: The Bilic saga could be drawing to an end, with the Croat tipped by Sky TV for an imminent return to Hajduk Split for a fee of around £400k.
  • Sept 15: The injury to unfortunate Terry Phelan last night appears to be heavy bruising from a bad blow to the thigh that could keep him out for a couple of weeks.
  • Sept 14: Everton travelled to Oxford United for the First Leg of their Second Round tie in the Worthington League Cup, but could only draw 1-1, with a goal form Cadamarteri.

  • Sept 13: The Football League have told Crystal Palace, who are currently tied by a transfer embargo, they cannot take Everton defender John O'Kane on loan – despite the fact that Everton were prepared to pay the player's wages while he was at Selhurst Park. The big rumour today is that Bill Kenwright would formally lodge his long-awaited bid to take over Peter Johnson's controlling interest in Everton FC...

  • Sept 12: The Everton Women's team continued their good start to the season with a 4-2 win away at Aston Villa

  • Sept 11: Everton travel to Sheffield Wednesday to pick up their first away points of the season with a 2-0 win after early goals from Barmby and Gemmill. Everton's U-19 team beat Leeds United 3-1 in their third match of the season. Sorry, no other details yet...

  • Sept 10: Abel Xavier is expected to play some part in tomorrow's match at Sheffield Wednesday, but Francis Jeffers is injured and Richard Dunne is suspended.Sept 9: Injured goalkeeper Thomas Myhre has made his long-awaited return to light training. The Norwegian keeper has been sidelined since he fractured a bone in his leg, while on duty with his country.

  • Sept 8: Don Hutchison fell foul of the ref in Estonia, getting a yellow card for taking a free-kick too quickly, and he will now miss Scotland's next critical match v Bosnia. Weir and Collins also played, with Gemmill on the bench. Everton's Shareholders Association have formally called for an extraordinary general meeting of the company to supposedly put Johnson on the spot, assuming he actually makes an appearance. However, the meeting will not take place for another 6 to 8 weeks. Francis Jeffers is a doubt for Saturday's match at Hillsborough, after he withdrew from the England U-21 squad with a recurring back injury.
  • Sept 7: Not a dazzling performance by Everton Reserves, but enough to beat Blackburn Rovers 1-0 at the Auto Quest Stadium, with a goal from Phil Jevons. Howard Wilkinson learns a hard lesson: he drops both Micheal Ball and Francis Jeffers from the England U-21 squad, and losses a unique 100% record as they lose 3-1 to Poland. Richard Dunne also missed the Ireland U-21 match, due to an automatic suspension.

  • Sep 6: Peter Degn, and two other members of the Danish U-21 squad, have been sent home with slapped wrists after they were five hours late reporting back to camp following a night of sin and debauchery at a local casino. Slaven Bilic, who recovered full fitness during the close season, is hoping for talks with Walter Smith later this week to re-assess Everton's decision to consign him to the footballers' scrapheap. After appearing for Croatia he says he wants to play for Everton, but knows that may not happen.

  • Sept 5: Tabloid talk of a mass walkout by the Manager and Board at Everton has been rightly ridiculed by the Club. It will simply plunge Everton into the leaderless chaos created by the power vacuum... Hang on – we're there already!

  • Sept 5: Talk of a mass walkout by the Manager and Board at Everton seems a ridiculous way to force Johnson's hand. It will simply plunge the Club into leaderless chaos amidst a management vacuum... Hang on – we're there already!

  • Sept 4: A certain defender by the name of Slaven Bilic featured in Croatia's 1-0 win over Ireland in Zagreb tonight. So he's obviously fit – just rejected by our Wally while he continues to draw his wages...  Mark Pembridge played his part in a key Welsh victory, 2-1 in Belarus. Everton's players were also pivotal in the 2-1 win Scotland secured over Belarus. Weir, Collins, and Hutchison started, with Scot Gemmill on the bench, and Hutch scoring the opener following good work from Collins. In the FA Premier Youth Academy League, Everton's Under-19s were held to a 1-1 draw today at Barnsley. Full Report.

  • Sept 3: Although Bill Kenwright has secured £30M in finance and made his bid – thanks in part to Spurs fan Peter Green – Peter Johnson is refusing to acknowledge Kenwright's bid, and apparently has no intention of selling Everton to him. Everton have secured the transfer of Abel Xavier, the 26-year-old Portuguese International who plays either in defence or midfield, for £1.5M from PSV Eindhoven. Michael Ball and Francis Jeffers both started for England U-21s v Luxembourg tonight, where Franny scored the second of 5 English goals. Richard Dunne blotted his copybook again for the Irish U-21 side as they crashed 5-1 to Croatia in Zagreb tonight. Dunne was sent off for hacking down a Croat as he headed for goal, 3 mins before half-time.

  • Sept 2: Today sees the deadline supposedly imposed by Peter Johnson for the receipt of bids for his stake in Everton. Is Kenwright's still in there?  Or will the Investors in Everton be successful in their bold co-operative plan?  Or will Peter Johnson flip them off again, by denying there ever was a deadline?

  • Sept 1: Tony Grant has gone out on loan to Tranmere Rovers until 4 October, with full approval of the relevant authorities.  Transfer-listed striker Michael Branch is facing two weeks on the sidelines after tweaking his hamstring in the reserves 2-2 draw with Bradford City on Tuesday.
