COLUMNIST KEN BUCKLEY

From my seat: West Ham (c)

By Ken Buckley :  13/12/2007 :  Comments (14) :
A capital performance sees us into the semi-final of a cup competition, much to the delight of all assembled. A game I thought that was a good old cup tie. We sprinted out of the blocks with some intent and pegged the Hammers back for a good five minutes with only a glancing header wide from Yak to show for it.

The Hammers then seemed to get a foothold in midfield with Parker being the pick of the bunch and it was indeed his long pass that seemed to catch both Neville and Yobo playing 'after you' as to who was picking up Cole; no-one did, he didnt hesitate and by the time Howard had decided to charge he poked home the ball and we were one down.

For a good thirty minutes I thought they ran the midfield and exposed uncertainty in our rearguard with Jagielka looking decidedly shaky. Then first of all Carsley started to have much more influence and Jags settled more and more into his role and for the final fifteen minutes of the first half we put some really good stuff together that they found hard to live with.

It was one of those times that you could sense a goal coming for us such was our dominance and so it proved when a move of many passes saw Neville, Carsley and Pienaar fashion a ball in a crowded area to Osman and his strike was sweet and true, the roof came off, no one wanted the half to end.

Second half saw some end-to-end stuff without either keeper being unduly troubled but throughout it all we looked the better team and the more likely... Arteta didn't have his best night and I wondered why someone else didn't take at least a couple of free kicks from promising positions as Arteta's radar was impaired; he just could'nt beat the first man.

The half wore on and it was evident the Blues were intent on going home with nothing less than a victory. They scrapped and battled when necessary and played some good joined-up stuff as well but that brakthrough ball just wouldn't come.

The clock ticked on... extra-time looked nailed on when a good old hoof from Carsley saw Gabbidon produce the 'panto' moment. A cushioned routine header back to the keeper with the Yaks hooves beating in his ears, he didn't look to see the keeper's position, witness two startled players as the header passed the bemused keeper. The Yak thundered past them, stuck out a preditor's left leg that put just enough pace on the ball for it to roll over the line.

All the roofs came off, The Yak song was sung, the ref blew the whistle and that moment ? priceless!. Overall I thought everyone played their part, no-one gave up, everyone wanted it. I have seen Cahill and Arteta play better and after another shaky start I thought Jags came more and more into his own and if he can take this confidence into more games then he can be a good addition. My man of the match was Pienaar he seemed to be everywhere and was the most inventive.

A cracking win in a cup-tie away from home, we are looking like decent team because we didn't look like the away side, always a good indicator. Yet no matter how much I am enjoying our run I still have the conviction that we need a top central mid-fielder and a wide man, preferably left footed.

Back to Cottee land again on Saturday, probably be quite a different game but the same result will do me. UP THE BLUES

Am just worried cause we haven’t seen Anichebe a lot lately.

What sin has the dude done? He’s been threathening every time he comes on yet he’s being punished in favor of Johnson or Mc Fadden?

I think DM needs to reconsider his substitution again.

As always, superb account, Ken!

My MoM most definitely goes to the inspired gent amongst you travelers who decided to bring a blow-up doll to the match. Don’t know how many of you lads have seen highlight reels, but after both goals they showed our group throwing a blue-shirted sex doll around! SO f***ing funny!!! I’ve never been so proud to be blue!

Ken, you kids are the best, man. I’ve written it before, but I will do again: listening in on Evertontv.com from half a world away, we always hear you singing, and it brings it that much closer to home. COYB, and come on you fearless away crowd :) You are loved!

I agree with the Stig on this the blow up doll was man (or woman) of the match, along with Evertons travelling hordes. What a sight to see the whole end behind the goal erupt when the yak fired his winner in. If you have not read Santosh Benjamins account I will add a line of his to to what I have said.
Jags sets up the Yak (who is hungry and needs to be fed on a regular basis!) who finishes as a striker should...
Maybe not technically right but good enough.
Stig, I live in New Zealand half a world away where are you?

"Cottee land" - how true! He was commentating on Sky Sports News, and when the Yak scored the winner, did you see his face, it was a picture. Ha! Ha! We all know where his allegience lies, little shit.

Great account Ken...was also at the game and the place exploded when the Yak scored. An unbelieable buz and unbelievable support all night.

You can see by the way the lads reacted that this bunch of players really understand what being a blue is all about...COYB

What id like to know is as i was not not at the game is your account states that west ham were in control for 30 mins of the 1st half ,yet moyes recons that if arsenal had played like that 1st half then everyone would be talking about it.That leaves 15 mins to play like arsenal.Someone is telling porkies,or is it moyes wishing attractive football after the recent critisizm on the teams style.I think he’s just wishing we kept possetion for long spells!! Saying that stringing 4 passes together under moyes,he probably does think that is total football.

I missed it too, sadly... but looking at the 20 mins(!) of "highlights", courtesy of EvertonTV, I really did wonder what Moyesey was on about. I would hate to have counted the number of hoofballs they included in said "highlights" too.

Heyup, Peter!

I’m in Polynesia, as well. By way of introduction I’ll just say that I’m an under-employed surfer in Hawaii!

One last thing from me about the away support...have any of you folks seen the Tim Howard interview on EvertonTV? When asked about the traveling hordes, he just lights up and mentions how great it is to being playing in a hostile stadium and have our thousands there who’ve "got your back". Recommended viewing!

I?m not sure what highlights Paul H saw but i watched all the game in Aus. Moyes was right in that in the 1st half Everton kept possession and knocked the ball around really well. Some great skill. Having said that, few chances were created- partly because the free kicks and corners weren?t taken advantage of .
Is there a web sit that shows stats from the games (possession %, corners, free kicks?)

By the way, should Ken’s report not be a "Column" rather than a "Fan’s Article"?
