COLUMNIST KEN BUCKLEY

From My Seat: Wigan (A)

By Ken Buckley :  25/11/2008 :  Comments (7) :

On a freezing cold night in Wigan our team did little to warm us to anything. In what was our worst display so far in this campaign our lack of depth of squad and failure to address the mid-field shortcomings in the summer window is coming home to roost.

For the first quarter of an hour we were bright with Saha looking fresh fit and lively. In that period we should have opened our account as the chances were there,a flurry of corners,a Cahill header just over and from a good Cahill cross the Yak was inches away from connecting.

On the quarter hour mark a good forward header from Fellaini put the Yak on a gallop down the left and for once he got his head up and picked out Saha one on one but his shot lacked the conviction of his West Ham effort and Kirkland parried away.

At this point we were very much on top and you wondered how many we might get as Wigan were awful. Well wigan didn't get any better all night we just got worse and the game descended into quite a shambles with both teams looking less than composed and mistake after mistake was made and the number of times both gave the ball back to the opposition brought into question 'proffessional footballers'?

As the game wearily meandered toward the break Wigan had the chances gifted to them to be three up. First Kapo set up a sitter that was headed over when it was easier to score,Cattermole cut through our midfield and back four with embarrassing ease and produced a curling effort that was brilliantly turned for a corner by the diving Howard.

The keeper still wasn't finished as from the resultant corner he somehow kept out a certain goal bound point blank header with what could be truly called a world class save. The half time whistle was a relief as our only effort of note since the 15min mark was a looping Cahill header that found the top of the net.

No changes at half time teamwise or performance-wise as tentiveness, uncertainty and the inability to see a luminous yellow shirt did for us as early as the fifth minute of the second half when mistakes in mid-field presented the ball to Brown who swept it out to the right and found Valencia marked by Lescott,he turned Lescott inside out and put a flat pass across goal that saw only Camara react quickly which left him with the simple tap in job.

The goal didn't change much though as the half continued down the weary road of mistakes, hoofball and cohesion was a foreign word. Wigan had a breakaway and Howard made another flying save from Valencia.

We saw Saha limp off injured and big Vic go wide right but such was our ineptitude all night it was difficult to see who was playing where.
Bramble gave us our usual chance by clearing wildly straight to Cahill but his effort was blocked and then in the last minute of injury time saw the episode of play that summed up the whole night for me.

From a punt both Yak and Cahill went for it,bumped into each other which confused all arround them but the ball bounced kindly to Cahill a few yards out and he somehow contrived to drive it over the bar and with that the ref broght the curtain down on what had been an horrendous night for premiership football let alone us.
Man-of-the-match? Only one contender — Tim Howard.

Overall this should be one to forget but it will live with me for a long time as it exposed bare our threadbare unbalanced squad that in no way can cope with the injuries and loss of form of so many players at this time and given the managers remarks this week we go with what we have got till season end and that doesn't fill me with confidence for a high finish.

It seems to me that the manager's inability to adequately replace Graveson and Carsley in the engine room is having knock on effects throughout the whole team.
Still football is an indeterminate game and we might yet come good but I have to say looking at the team that started and the bench I won't hold my breath as the manager has nowhere to go to freshen up and give the out of form and walking wounded a breather.

Spurs away next and another performance like tonight and it could be painful but here's hoping.

See you there. UP THE BLUES

The team is the managers making, the squad is. He has not been forced to sell and if he has himself and Kenwright are in cahoots at covering it up.

That was the most atrocious display of football from an Everton team since Smith's 5 centre halves days.

You are too fair to them. Everton under Moyes have in the good times out fought teams.

We have very rarely outplayed them. The fight is gone as the players look disillusioned for the most part. It could be a long winter.

And a very long couple of years until we get the $$ to get someone in that plays football the right way.

It's not about the amount of money to spend. It's about your philosophy. And Moyes is pretty one-dimensional and predictable.

The problem is we are starting each game with 8 men... as Moyes's 3 favourite players, Arteta, Cahill and Lescott, offer us nothing what-so-ever at the moment! We're complaining about lack of numbers, well why not use the players that are available such as Baines to replace Lescott, Castillo to replace Cahill and Arteta to drop to the bench too. A midfield of Ossie, Fellaini, Castillo, Pienaar will offer us more at the mo and give the 3 untouchables a kick up the backside to show they can be replaced!!! And can someone please explain to me why the hell whenever Big Vic plays, he plays wide right! WTF is that about???

I watched a footie match last night ? and I mean a footie match: pass, move, pace, direction, skill, flair, fight, togetherness... I'm talking about Pompey!! None of the words above could you mention with this Everton side, I can think of one though SHITE.

What I'm trying to say is look at Tony Adams, he has been in charge just over a month at Portsmouth, look how they play football!! It was brilliant to watch agaist a team full of superstars!!

Tony Adams was shouting from the touchline KEEP THE BALL KEEP THE BALL all game how refreshing to see, now look at our man moyes, 6½ years no pace no power no skill and no flair!! He shouts from the touchline all game I wonder he must tell the players to HOOF THE BALL!! FFS JAGS HOOF IT!! I'm sick of this crap... hope we're not on TV the rest of the season!!!

I couldn't agree more with Anand Rabheru?s comments... We all know we have a small squad but if Moyes hasn't got the balls to drop the consistently underperforming: Cahill, Lescot and Arteta then things will only get worse. Give Castillo the holding midfield role, Pienaar a free role and Baines in for Lescott!... (You?ve got to have competition for places.)

Anand; Q.) Why is big Vic playing wide on the right??

A.1) this is straight out of Don Howe?s book, ?Attacking options for defensive coaches, the art of bore? ... want width, then buy a fullback, can?t do that coz the crowd will go apeshit, convert an attacker (coz we don?t really rate or even like them, do we?) to a wing back, job done.

A.2) Moyes is a total fuckwit.

A.3) Moyes is an extremely well paid fuckwit, who doesn?t know what his best 11 is (well you bought them Davey) or how to play them.

A very accurate report as ever Ken, I agree with it entirely. Not looking forward to the Spurs game this afternoon. Its very difficult to understand what has gone wrong with what is mainly the same team that finished fifth last season albeit with a bit of a limp to the finish line. Have teams found us out at last? Where is the guile and will to win? I agree with Eddie and Anand, Moyes should drop under-performing players. Baines must be wondering what he’s got to do to get a game. The likes of Lescott, Arteta and Cahill need a kick up the backside. Personally I think we need to get back to 4-5-1. Cahills best in this set up. 4-4-2 with Fellaini and Cahill looks lost. Ans whats happened to Arteta? Groin/stomach injury sorted at last and his deliveries are worse than last season especially on Monday night. We desperately need Pienaar back. He gives us that extra dimension and width and plays the ball to feet. Lets get back to 4-5-1 Yak up front with Cahill in behind and Osman Fellaini Arteta(?) and Pienaar. We need Osman going forward. He seems to be operating as our defensive midfielder most of the time when he’s best going forward. Oh how we could do with a playmaking central midfielder right now. Manny would be a good bet. DOubt we’d have any chance of getting him on loan in the Jan transfer window though. Who knows but surely it can only get better??? Or can it??? COYB FFS!!

That’s the trouble with this team at the moment, no competition for places. Ok so a lot of you hate Andy van but at least naming him will get some competition going. He isn’t even named in the reserves where, before injury was giving man of the match performances. The team needs shaking up and sorting out before we end up in the Championship and where will Moyes "favourites" be then? Clamouring out of the door.
