COLUMNIST KEN BUCKLEY

From my seat: Man City (A)

Strikerless Everton's mid-field dynamos conjour up yet another away performance that produces three points and no subs used.

In a game that produced a sparkling first half and a more mundane second, the Blues always looked more like a home team than away and that speaks volumes at this level. With Castillo in to give Arteta that bit more licence and Pienaar, Osman and Fellaini to bomb forward to help the lone Cahill, the manager seemed to have made a silk purse from a sou's ear given our injury problems in the striker department. From the off you just sensed we were up for it and determined to put the Villa game to bed.

In a first half that we looked the more dangerous didn't mean City didn't have their chances ? in fact SWP had the first shot, a ferocious drive blocked by Lescott, this was followed by an Ossie effort that was screwed just wide. Then the Blues gained a free kick outside of the box and Arteta struck a beauty that beat Hart all ends up but came back off the bar, Fellaini was first to react but put his looping header past the keeper but it scraped the bar and landed on top of the net.

Then, at the other end, City put together a good flowing move that put Ireland clear in the box but thankfully he skied instead of scoring. We had just got over that when Robinho made his first apperance in the game and had a low shot from close in brilliantly saved by Howard.

On the 20-minute mark, Osman was hauled down by ex-Blue Ball that had players and faithful howling "Penalty!" but Ref Halsey would have none of it (looked nailed on to me). The next action involved a good move down the left that saw Arteta smash one with such ferocity that Hart although making a very good save was knocked off his feet.

City reminded us they were still a threat when a SWP piledriver beat Howard and clipped the bar; not to be outdone Cahill did well to win the ball and feed Osman who put in a wicked low pass that Fellaini turned goalward only to see Hart make a very good save and turn it around.

Half-Time and the feeling was we were looking good and giving better than what we were getting. The second half didn't live up to the first as both teams looked to give little away but were ever prepared to look for the break. From one of these Neville put in a great cross that looked destined for Cahill's head and a simple goal but it deflected off the last defender and the chance was gone.

The much heralded Robinho had hardly shown and it was left to SWP to provide the main threat to us and after one foray where he skipped past Lescott and put in a great cross that looked to fall to the unmarked Jo only for Neville to read it well and hack away.

From the 70-minute mark, City upped it and it took the game to us and Howard had to make a smart diving save to keep a shot from Ireland out. Then from a cross Howard pushed the ball up high on his goaline and the grabbed it as it came down with some City players claiming he had broght it back from over the line.

With three minutes being put up on the board would it be like last week after we had played so well? With a minute of it gone it looked like we would take a point that was well deserved but another ex-Blue, Dunne, gave away a needless corner that was taken in expert fashion by Ossie and would you believe it was Cahill highest and ball nesttling in the bottom corner, cue the street party of the year as all celebrated as if winning the League, Champions League and Grand National all in one go.

The ref added celebration time, City poured forward, the odd heart in mouth but even though they got in our box we cleared... the ref blew, we... well, did what you would expect. Man of the Match? Hard to call, all rose to the occasion. Arteta had his best game yet, Pienaar put in a top class job and Fellaini became more like 'Le Machine' (got booked again though).

If I was going to give it to anyone it would be David Moyes for picking up his players after Villa and devising the system to play with no recognised striker that looked like 4-6-0 but yet had more bodies and threat in the box than City with their multi-million pound strikeforce.

Castillo had a game where he was hardly noticed yet his work seemed to give others the confidence to get forward and I thought none profited more than Arteta who was able to get on with his job as playmaker.

The City fans were less than complimentary toward their team at the end but if the club's ambitions are as big as the programme they produce then they should have something to look forward to.

Chelsea next plus a home game... put the two together and the portents don't look good, but with spirit like this who knows we may be able to take a scalp and get our home form somewhere near to where it ought to be.

Ah the ups and downs of footy and its fans... but I eagerly await the outcome. See you there. UP THE BLUES!

Interesting how Atrteta has been relieved of monopolising the corner taking duties. Not a bad thing too by the sounds of it!

An admirable result considering we have no recognised out and out forwards available.

Thanks for this Ken, as always.

I see the corner for the winner was taken by Osman. He took a couple last week to vs Villa and they looked much better than most of Arteta?s, most of who?s dead balls this season have not been good enough and often fail even to get past the first man. Good to see Moyesey is apparently addressing that problem by giving somebody else a pop.

Thanks Ken, on the mark as always. Also I agree with Chris Matty on the corner issue.

Great win! maybe a new song for us should be .... we’re on the road again!

Great post again, Ken ? a balanced view as always. I was so pleased to see some grit and team spirit for once in difficult times. Perhaps 40 points is closer than I think!

On another matter ? it does look like Villa are having the season we?ve had in recent years ? with the Arse so lacking in backbone, I don?t think 4th is unrealistic for them! What a pity we buggered up this season in the summer ? otherwise I reckon we might have been up there with the RS. C?est La Vie!

As always, Ken... a wonderful article with all the facts and so much humor too. Your admiration for Moyes was very warranted too. Seems likes ages ago that we started the season so miserably. We are far from having the perfect squad, but the guys showed that spirit, passion and hard-work can sometimes make up for that... at least temporarily. I really want us to get a couple of strikers on loan and buy a midfielder (or two) in the January window... wishful thinking? Yes. COYB.

A stunning and deserved result. I thought Castillo handled himself well out there and can look to more time on the pitch. What can you say about the Aussie - he looked to be worn out at about 80 minutes and here you go, fighting to the end. Well deserved. A happy day in the US with the team televised. COYB - keep up the pressure.

C?mon Dave, a bit of positivity! There is a long way to go & Villa have a small squad & have never been in this lofty position before unlike us.

Just a shame we gave it to Villa last week ?cos we?d be 4pts off Champs League footy. Keep going like yesterday, lads and you never know... Just remember, Villa have a small squad and European competition to contest as well. Always believe we can do it, it might just happen.

Well done lads, perfect response to last week.

Now Moyes is everybody?s hero again, I guess I?ll get battered for saying it?s taken him about a season and a half to recognise that most of Arteta?a corners are shite. Ah well, I supose he?s a young manager still learning his trade!

Dave Ewards - are you having a laugh or what..? After seeing us completely dominate Villa last week, along with great results at City & Spurs, I for one have no worries at all about Villa. The Sky4 are still far and away the best 4 teams in the land and if we continue to play at the level we played yesterday we will easily be the best of the rest once again. Forget CL, we would embarass ourselves to be honest, lets just hope for a good cup run and 5th eh.

Always enjoy your column Ken. I could only watch this on a consistently ’freezing’ stream so you filled in all the gaps. Thanks for the time and effort you take every week. It’s greatly appreciated.

Absolutely superb performance... I?ve been looking to play Cahill as a striker for a long time now... but to honest, apart from the goal he didn?t look like he was playing that position most of the time. Replace Cahill with Saha, and Osman with a decent winger, and we have the makings of a very good team.

The only thing that worries me about the current situation, is that we have had these players since the start of the season and only injury has forced Moyes into playing them, or playing them in their most effective positions.

While the way we are playing is a good sign, the way we?ve got to that position is not a good sign.

And neither is the prospect of Gary Neville.

I like your positivity, David - with a bit more of the spirit shown against City and Villa beforehand (I agree with your view on that game, Paul), I don?t rule out us rising up the league further.

The underlining point I was trying to make, was given our very indifferent first half of the season, the fact that we relatively high up the league, and given the inconsistency of the Sky 4 etc. I do wonder if we?d have got it better sorted in the summer (building on last season), got the new contract signed quicker, it makes you wonder where we might have been in the league today (definitely above Villa!)

I go into the Chelski game with a lot more belief than I would have down a few weeks ago ? let?s hope for a good turn-out and rousing vocal presence! COYBs

Dave,

There is absolutely no difference in personnel between September and now... the difference is the formation and personnel changes Moyes has been forced to make.

What you are really asking is that, if Moyes had made these changes of his own accord a hell of a lot sooner, would we be higher up the table? And my answer would be a Yes...

No doubt we?ll have the Moyes gang on complaining that Saturday's display was all due to his genuis... unfortunately, it isn?t.

I just hope we can pretend that we are playing at the Bridge next Monday. Set the tactics up like an away game. Mind you, with the players available we may have no other choice. I hope we don?t try and pile forward against them. We need to keep it tight, deny them space and hope we can get a break. The crowd will have to be patient but we know by their home form that they don?t like having to break teams down. Still, if the worst comes to the worse we won?t have done the RS a favor!

I say give Tim a go upfront. I know we don't really have a choice but seeing what that goal meant to the players as well as us shows that the confidence and form from last season is coming back.

Cahill didn't fit into 4-4-2 as well as 4-5-1 because he needs the freedom that a striker would have; we now have an opportunity to let him have that freedom. You never know, it could be the start of something! Henry was a winger at Monaco!

Yes the squad?s quality is starting to shine thru, just like this time last yr! Pienaar is the man for me though ? he is so creative ? doesn't give the ball away and sets up a lot ? needs to be a bit sharper with his shooting ? a key ingredient (midget gem!) The confidence is coming back... Fellaini will be our Patrick Viera ? talented hard man weve needed for so long...! COYB!

Hi Dave Edwards,

40 points is 15 points away. Just thought that might help as you seem to be struggling. You can make some good money if you think we?ll be lucky to finish with around 40 points ? go on to a spread betting site and back us, last I looked you can gain a unit for each point less than 55.5. Put your money where your mouth is ? and spare us!
