COLUMNIST KEN BUCKLEY

From My Seat: Liverpool (A) — Cup

By Ken Buckley :  25/01/2009 :  Comments (28) :
Twice in a week and they still can't beat us with home advantage. The multi-millionaires had their best chance ever today as just one training ground injury and one suspension rendered our mid-field bereft of any creativity, with no like for like substitutions available in our paper-thin squad.

As you might expect in those circumstances, Liverpool had virtually all the play yet found themselves 1-0 behind at half-time due to their less than convincing defending at set pieces which again, as was the case on Monday. Cahill was free of markers and headed goalwards from a great corner from Pienaar for Lescott to add the finishing touch which brought uproarious scenes from the Blue hoards.

For all of their pressing, any sniff they had was dealt with in excellent fashion by our back four. Half-time and you could say we deserved our lead for taking the chance when offered, even though it may have been our only purposeful foray forward when their waves merely lapped on the rocks of the Blue back four.

Second half and with a 'Rafa Rant' in their ears their tempo and desire was on the up but yet again our rocks were well placed. At this point, I bemoaned our lack of creativity in midfield as we had no one to get the ball down and pick a pass that kept us in possession long enough to build an attack so it was a case of clear it, regroup and repel the next attack.

This we were doing with some ease until 10 mins in when Gerrard was put in on the left angle of the area and from my seat seemed to hit a tame left footer that looked to go straight through Howard, if that was the case then a bad error indeed. However, just a few minutes later and the same keeper made a quite wonderful save to deny Gerrard a sainthood from the media.

For the rest of the half, they kept attacking, we kept defending with resolution and a good dollop of class but our attacking ideas were very limited with Cahill having to come more and more into midfield. Big Vic was clearly struggling and Castillo tiring; we only had a couple of kids, Gosling and Rodwell to put on and although they played a part, in no way did or could it help with our attacking ideas. I hope Bill is on the phone tonight looking for that much needed investment before our present players are burnt out.

Final whistle and no doubt a better result for us than them considering the team they were able to field which suggested that 'Rantn Rafa' wanted it done and dusted today.

Overall, I thought it was a very good defensive job well done against an acknowledged top four Champions League side and with Cappello in attendance it should have given him food for thought when it comes to choosing an England back four as ours was not only first class but showed they don't buckle under intense pressure when faced with so called world stars. I have enjoyed both results at the games yet both have demonstrated we are short on creative numbers for the midfield, which means we are over reliant on keeping every player fit and suspension-free.

With no money available this window then, each time we lose either Arteta or Fellaini or as today both, we will rely more and more on defensive tactics to see us have a shout for Europe and who knows ? a tilt at the cup.

On returning to my North Liverpool watering hole, I was quickly pounced upon by the non-matchgoing TV reds who informed me that we had been battered and were nothing more than a lucky big ball hoofing shower. I merely informed them that they had accurately identified their own problem.

Arsenal on Wednesday and as ever with the Blues I have no idea what to expect but I hope to see us in our opponents half a lot more than I did today. One thing is for certain that by the time of the replay we will be well versed in playing against the so-called elite!

See you there... UP THE BLUES

Hi Ken

Good post as always...

I agree, it wasn?t pretty but then again ? it wasn?t a beauty contest! Castillo looked nervous and uncertain whenever he had the ball and lost out to SG at the start of the move that lead to their equaliser.

All said and done ? it was one way traffic but boy did we play as a unit determined to get something out of the game. Let?s hope we have more creativity in midfield for the replay ? but then again, we still have Arsenal and Man U to consider too.

Finally, I fully agree with you on the performance of our back 4. I can?t see Yobo coming in barring an injury or setback to the current line-up and Moyes needs to stick with them.

We didn?t get a foul awarded our way for 23 minutes ffs. Bennett and his two gobshite assistants were almost playing for them. Or am I paranoid.

Dominic, you're not parnoid, we got nothing off Steve Bennett whatsoever, the only decent thing he did was book Carragher at HT.

But anyway, the only way we were going to get through that game was if our back 4 performed, and they did, absolutely heroically, Jags and Lescott were unbelievable, it was one way traffic on possession but they only had two chances, so much for having nearly £200m worth of talent at your disposal.

Rafa hasn't got a clue and is now bricking it at the thought of coming back to Goodison, he?s made an arse of himself in front of the whole Premier League by having a go at the best manager this league has ever had. Albeit he is a moaner, but Rafa has proved he can't hack the pressure, and for his little rant about only one team wanting to win, we out fought them and had much more passion, and did our best without our best players to get them back to Goodison, hopefully the boys will do us proud with Mikel and Felli back.

One of the funniest thing I've seen was the tourist Liverpool fans having their photos taken in the main stand with their scarfs in the air as we sang The City's All Ours after the final whistle..... bell-ends!!!!

We out-sung the gobshites on their own ground, now let's get Goodison going and not let them come and out-sing us. The atmosphere at Goodison has been absent for a lot of this season so let's make sure we get behind the team a week Wednesday.

COYB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No Dominic you're not paranoid at all mate. I have watched the last two games with a Walsall supporter, so he was a complete neutral, just hoping to see some entertaining games. He commented on just how many decisions went the way of Liverpool in both games. Now if I?d have raised that observation to my Red supporting mates... I would be a bitter just spouting bile.

I was watching Castillo intently as the game went on ? and while he did win the ball a few times, he then proceeded to lose it agian by not being able to pass to a blue shirt.

As for marking SG: Did anyone tell him that was what he was meant to be doing?

I get the feeling he will be returning to Red Star Belgrade... disappointing.

It was the ?Alamo? at Anfield and all the back four were heroic and fully deserved to get something from the game/s... BUT, it was highly evident again that we are really going to struggle with the tiny squad we have to mount a consistent challenge throughout the season. I just said a day or so ago, who is there to cover for Howard, Arteta, Cahill and Fellaini when injuries, fatigue and suspensions start to bite? If we do not invest then all the spirit and heroics will be totally wasted.

As mentioned, Cappello was in attendance. Looking at an entire Engalnd back four. Is there any other Premier League team who can / would field an English back four?

That’s the same thing I tell my RS mates here.

We had:

1) No Strikers
2) Our playmaker was out injured for this game
3) 2 "Kids" playing (Gosling & Rodwell)

And still RS can’t beat us with their Multi Million Dollar Squad. What a joke!

Now a draw is good, and a replay back in Goodison is gonna kill them because:

1) Arteta should be back
2) Fellaini should be back too

We will destroy them.

I bloody hate RS, especially Stevie Gayrrard and Jamie Carragirl.

I see the fat Spanish waiter was at it again. I can?t make out if he is just fuckin' thick or he?s just a complete twat. The way he talks you would think we were on a level playing field. Even if we had a full squad, considering the financial resources they have compared to ours, it's far from a level playing field. Then we play them with no forwards (apart from Vic) and no creative midfield players available and he comes out with shite like... there was only one team wanting to win the game... really!

I found it interesting that Satanta had a poll asking people if they agreed with him... a resounding 87% of people from all over the country reckon he was talking shite.

Not since Shankly can I remember a red shite manager consistently making derogatory remarks about the Blues. I think he has bitten off more than he can chew with Ferguson though and I hope the Mancs give his fat arse a good shafting.

Steve Edwards, I know it's politically incorrect, crude and defamatory, but the last paragragh did make me laugh :-)

Love the humour and the sentiment, never in the field of human conflict has so much been said by someone who has little idea... I hope he gets what he deserves and packs his bags back to Espana at the end of the season ? better still, leave him there, he is making LFC more of a joke than we could ever do.

I bet Alex F will be on the phone to Moyes asking him to make sure he does them over at GP... to quote Kevin Keegan, I would so love it....

First things first ? Liverpool under Benitez are notorious for going to away grounds in Europe looking to grind out a draw, wait 'til you see the rubbish they will serve up in Madrid in a few weeks. For Benitez to criticise us is complete hypocrisy and proves the point that they can?t break teams down.

Secondly, Castillo looked hopeless yesterday. He always seemed to be off balance when passing the ball with predictable consequences. Fellaini gave Gerrard a good going over earlier in the season for Liege ? here?s hoping he can do it again in the replay. Also, how the hell will they cope with him at set pieces?

Outstanding performances by Jagielka and Pienaar. If there are two or three more players around Europe as good as Pienaar for £2 million, we should beg, borrow and steal to get them.

If we can keep what we have then I think next summer we should be looking to find the next Valencia, Palacios, Zaki etc. to add two or three bodies to the squad without breaking the bank (which may already be broken).

There are some funny comments on here, laughing my head off, excellent stuff!!

I enjoyed all of the singing yesterday, let?s make sure we do it at GP for the next two Wednedays, let Goodison rock!!

I was happy with the result. We go to a side joint top of the league having spent millions, with a full strength side and we turn up with half a side out injured/suspended. What does the fat Sapanish waiter expect?? Prick. I can?t wait to see his face when we do them and Man U take the league, he?s a twat like most red shites.

At GP with Felli, Arteta, maybe Saha back, we?ll do them. We?ve shown we can cope with their attacking, so if these players come back and we attack more we should win. We had one attack yesterday and scored, just imagine if we have several efforts on goal!! And I think we?ll do the Arse Wednesday too ha, ha. Here?s looking forward to the next three games. Proud to be a Blue.

I am surprised that no one has picked up on a couple of penalty shouts we did not get ? the first on Pienaar was a definite clip of the heels and as such whether intentional or not I understood to be a foul ? therefore, if inside the penalty area, a penalty.

The second was a shot which hit an RS hand and whilst I understand hand to ball argument the exact same thing happened just out side our box and yes it was awarded as a free kick ? is the tint of my glasses too blue (as my dad a RS supporter suggested) or do I have a point?

Gobshite on Shitetanta said Peanuts went down too easily and would have been a soft penalty etc ? I did not realise there were degrees of penalties... On a point of balance, I was surprised that the RS did not get a penalty in the league game when Jags stuck a foot between Ladyboy's legs ? I think he was too honest and still tried to shoot which goes against strikers sometimes.

Also thought that our performance yesterday was a carbon copy of how the RS play in away legs in the Champions (& anywhere down to 5th place) League ? but Rafa obviously doesn?t watch those games.

Oh yes, welcome back, Ken. Whilst I sometimes try to disagree with your reports (after a defeat for example), after a bit of calm contemplation I usually concede that your report is more balanced than my view. It's a pity I can?t find a newspaper that matches your balanced reports ? they are normally full of lazy reporting along the lines of RS = fantastic, EFC = gritty with no explanation as to why the above may be and regardless of how the game actually panned out.

Only my second post, but I am completely incesensed by the post match interviews. Watched it in Australia (lifelong scouser, once lived in Spellow Lane, became an Australian citizen one year ago today - Australia Day). We put out a cut-price team, were bereft of our best striker, two best midfield players and the only reason my gran didn?t get a game is ?cos next door?s dog is fitter... They couldn?t beat us. Again.

Do they applaud our organisation, improvisation, team spirit? Do they fuck. Both Gerrard and Rafa, when asked " do you think this was a fair result?" answered "No". Well, unless the ref was on our side (ahem.... Clattenburg), or terrorists exploded bombs in front of their strikers when they were about to shoot, then I reckon that if both teams score the same amount of goals, then it was a fair result.

For fuck's sake, we played a South American who has played about 2 games this season, two kids who had to have notes from their mum to turn up, against a multi-milllion pound line up. AND THEY COULDN?T BEAT US....

I hope we give them the footballing equivalent of a stairwell nonce-bashing when they come to Goodison and Mikel and Maro are fit.
I so hate them....

I can't understand to some point their supporters putting their boot into Benitez?s rather large backside.

Are these the same fans that were most likely calling his name from the rooftops when he led them to two European cup finals, an FA Cup final and other accolades I can?t think of right now. It amazes me that Benitez can go from the be-all and end-all in RS eyes one moment, and now they want him out because the team is stalling and drawing with teams that refuse to lie down and give as good as they get. Second of the league, still in the FA Cup (but maybe not for long) and in the Champions League knock out phases and they are still not happy.

Maybe if they had our injury crisis and omission of players, then they could have a certain amount of justification for complaint.

Do you know what I?m looking forward to most? Showing those tourists down the road what a proper football atmosphere is. I think we?re going to give them hell ? and watch the roofs come off the stands when we beat them.

I can?t wait. It's going to be great.

When DM shot back at Rafa’s whining about our tactics, I wish he’d mentioned Rafa’s tactic of having his millionaires diving like the Chinese Olympic team. That scumbag flopping around on the ground, waving his fingers in the air to try and get Cahill sent off, is a perfect example of the cowardice that always sinks the RS in the end.

Surprised nobody had commented here on that gaucho gobshite Mascherano. Had it been a more neutral referee he would have received at least 1 yellow and possibly 2. How often do you see a Premier League player dive like a fucking cormorant and then suggest his opponent (who has done nothing) gets a card.

There?s something slimey & dishonest about this guy. One of the most bizarre scenes for many a long year was last season at Old Trafford when he spent 20 minutes trying to referee the game himself and when he accosted the referee for the 10th time (against his teammates best efforts) he gets "surprisingly" sent off.

Then a little fat bloke looking like a purser from the Spanish Armada with a black goaty defends him!

These people belong in Extremadura. Or as Michael would call it, Excrementa.

Just to add a bit of balance after my criticism of Pienaar last Monday ? he was immensely improved on Sunday ? in fact he was the only midfielder that tried to create anything whatsoever... And the entire back line, including Hibbert were superb.

If you put two defensive midfielders on the pitch then you?ve got to expect to be defending the entire match... but then again, we got the result.

Once again a very good article.

To be honest, I don?t think any of us long suffering Blues fans should be down or despondent about the Anfield cup result. What did we expect? With such injuries and suspensions and the fact that Moyes always prefers good league results over cup results, I think, after all is said and done, this was a pretty dam good, morale boosting draw! Honestly guys, ....celebrate!

The RS Gobshites failed (yet again) to beat us on their patch of wasteland! To see them leaving in their drones before the end of the game, preparing for their 200-mile trip down south to London or wherever, and to see the Fat Waiter have yet another childish rant and dig at the Moyesiah was so rewarding! (When he reacts like that we know we?re under his skin!)

As Evertonians we always tend to be of a pessimistic nature and yes, a lot of the time that approach could be justified, especially when we play THEM, but take heart, be positive, the way we held them at bay, the way the back four performed so admirably, the way we all stuck together on and off the pitch gives me personally great belief that when things get better injury wise and with a few more shrewd signings by our Davie, things could really start to click into place.

I like the fact that we do things the correct way at our club, and how DM gets the maximum output from minimum funds available. I like the fact that players like Cahill would seemingly die for the cause and I like that fact that at one point in the game last Sunday we had eight, yes eight English players on the pitch to their two!
Roll on Wednesday night against the Gunners. I?m up for it? are you?! COYBs!!!!

We only got a result because of Liverpool’s ineptitude to finish us off. Had they had been firing on all cylinders we would be out of the F.A cup. They are a good side, as much as I hate to admit it, and whether Rafas comments have affected them or not, they remain a dangerous outfit to any opposition with the calibre of players they have.

I look forward to their Madrid showdown and hopefully a Real Victory. But you never know with those sods.
