It's Cruel at the Bottom

Match Report: Everton vs West Bromwich Albion

The early kick offs always makes it a bit of a catastrophe in terms of getting to the game, meeting up etc. It was made a bit more complicated by me having a bloody busy day so I was out and about from early on. Gary?s a postie and so had to rampage through his round just to make it in time and Ste, well Ste likes his sleep so the early kick off was an inconvenience to him also. Despite all this we did manage to congregate in the pub at 12.15pm-ish for a few cheeky scoops before the game. I?d heard the team news on the radio and was rather shocked to hear Lescott had been dropped for this one with the only reasoning I could offer being that being one booking away from a suspension if he played, he?d miss next weekends FA Cup Quarter Final with Middlesbrough should he have received a yellow card. Hibbert replaced him at right back with Yobo continuing at centre. Elsewhere obviously we knew the unfortunate Arteta and savaged Anichabe were unavailable and were replaced with good quality in the form of Fellaini and Pienaar, whilst Rodwell was also missing, presumably injured as he wasn?t on the bench. Cahill, back from suspension, was in for him.

Everton lost the toss again and had to swap ends before the game. The match official Steve Bennett got the game underway and West Brom certainly started the more positive side, taking the game to Everton from the off. You felt Everton generally had them at arms length but it wasn?t exactly comfortable for us. Mostly led by Stephen Pienaar we found our way into the game before long though and actually had the ball in the net through Cahill who smashed home a volley though the whistle had long since gone for a push by the Aussie I think.

Cahill had another good opportunity shortly afterwards when he failed to connect with a half volley when the ball bounced to him, I think from a corner. Whilst we were now more in the game, it didn?t mean West Brom were out of it, and their noisy fans were almost up on their feet celebrating when they though Morrison had scored. It must?ve looked in from their angle but he screwed into the side-netting. When you?re down the bottom you?ve gotta take your chances. When you?re down the bottom you?ve got to mark up at set pieces and West Brom were made to pay big time when Cahill was astonishingly left completely unmarked to head home from a wicked Leighton Baines free kick delivery.

That was enough to lead us into the break a goal to the good but you felt we?d have to improve for the second period to make sure of victory in this one.

Improve we didn?t but win we did. We were under a lot of pressure for long periods of the game and West Brom will go away wondering quite how they didn?t at least score. They actually may well have done when I think substitute Luke Moore headed from close range. I was pretty close to it and felt the ball may just have crossed the line before a combination of Jagielka and Howard just about cleared their lines. The West Brom players certainly appealed long and hard but Bennett said no. I?ll be interested to see that later on Match of the Day.

Again this demonstrated the cruel Premier League world we live in as down at the other end substitute Louis Saha turned his defender beautifully before smashing a peach of a shot beyond the despairing drive of Scott Carson and into the corner of the net. Get in there! The place erupted more with relief than anything else I think and the game was safe you felt.

My mind began to wander towards a bet I?d made at William Hill prior to the game. I asked the bookie if it was possible to bet on Everton winning 2-1, Cahill with both goals. He said that couldn?t be done but I could bet on Cahill first goal and Cahill last goal with the score at 2-1. I did that and got a generous 28-1 both ways and put £2 on each possibility. Imagine then my exasperation when West Brom laid siege upon our goal in the final 10 minutes only to be denied by woeful finishing, a ball bouncing down off the underside of the bar and out from a long range Luke Moore strike, and decent last ditch defending perhaps by substitute Castillo more than most.

I really have to stop making these silly bets.

Player Ratings:

Howard: Made a decent save in either half but otherwise, despite plenty of chances for West Brom, was rather under-worked. 7
Baines: Had a very productive game both defensively and offensively. Links up fantastically well with Pienaar. Wonderful ball for the first goal. 9
Yobo: I thought he had a bit of a shocker last weekend so was surprised to see him stay in the team at the expense of Lescott. However he responded brilliantly and was one of our better players today I thought. 8
Jagielka: Solid as always. 7
Hibbert: was doing fine until coming off injured. I hope that ain?t a serious one but it didn?t look it. 7
Neville: Fine both in the midfield and at right back. 6
Pienaar: Awesome. Was our heartbeat today. Unlucky not to get on the scoresheet as well. All our positive play came through him. My man of the match. 9
Gosling: Had a good game. He?s getting into the workload rhythm, is very composed on the ball and is getting up well to win headers also. Looks like he?ll be a player of real quality if given the right protection and time to develop. 8
Fellaini: My only criticism of the referee today would be for his victimisation booking for Fellaini. This is getting ridiculous now. As for Fellaini, he took a while to get into the game but was well into the grove just when he got substituted. 6
Cahill: Worked hard as always. Nice (though fairly straightforward) header for his goal and worked well with Jo. All in all a good days work for Tim. 7
Jo: Did OK. His first touch could do with improving but I can?t help but think he?d struggle terribly against a good defence. 6

Substitutes:
Osman (for Hibbert): The midfield improved a notch once he came on. Showed some delightful touches of the ball and I think we?re a much better team for having him in there. 7
Saha (for Fellaini): Superb. Scored a splendid goal and put himself about well. If ONLY he could stay fit. 8
Castillo (for Jo): A few loose passes aside he did well in the holding role. As contradictory as it sounds, I think he should be given more responsibility with the ball as I think he?s got it in him to pass it about a bit. 6

Agree with all except I can't believe you only gave Jags a 7. I know he's setting high standards but if Yobo was an 8 then Jags was at least an 8½.

Cheers for the report Paul. This is the first game I’ve missed for quite a while so it’s always good to read how the players rated.

Interesting point you make about Castillo. I don’t like to critisize our players (I don’t buy into this crap some are spouting about Felliani at the moment for example but there’s another thread for that discussion).

However, Castillo to me, looks scared of the ball. Against Newcastle when he had 83 minutes to prove himself, the only thing he did with the ball was pass it a few yards sideways to Pip. He never went looking for the ball and never looked comfortable when he had it.

When you say he should be given more responsibility with the ball - he just hasn’t looked like he wants it.

I hope I’m proved wrong - he’s got a dozen or so games to do it - but I just don’t think he’s Premier League standard (let alone top six) and I can’t see us going through with any option to buy!

I would say you?re very generous with your marks.

Gosling was anonymous and got an 8?

And while Pienaar improved in the second half he was useless in the first.

Got to disagree with giving Castillo more of the ball, he is shite. He can't create anything, he is slow and isn't mobile enough, he will be gone in the summer with loud arse VdM.

Jo is slow-jo. He needs too much time to work with the ball. I hope he can improve but as he has had almost a season in the PL I have my doubts.

Ciarán - Pienaar useless?? Were we at the same game? I thought he looked sharp and he and Baines are providing what little creativity we have at the moment.

I think the correct expression is "lard arse". Lard being an alternative for oil or grease as in lard on toast. (Get you Grandma to make you some.)

Arse being an expression for one?s rear anatomy.

Paul, what game were you watching mate in respects of marks out of ten?

Peanuts was ok the 2nd half but very average in the 1st.

Gosling was very average throughout although he does give us options out wide until we eventually buy a decent wide man.

Fellaini, what can I say? Fucking last... and that is praising the big waste of space, £15 mill for that wanker beggars belief, ? one of the worst players seen in a blue shirt for donkey's, absolute shite!

Jo; see Fellaini, fucking crap, that's why City want rid. Slow, shit first touch, even makes Anichebe look good and that is saying something.

Osman, for some reason that I find unable to comprehend or fathom quite a few ?bluenoses? rate this fella... please if you can tell me why? He is a total waste of spunk. I can't remember when he last had a good game against a good side, if he has ever had one. In fact, I would rather play 10 men and a rush goalie than that useless little prick.

Getting a bit fed up with the criticism of Fellaini. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he is still not fully fit. He was one of our most influential players until he picked up that back injury. I remember most of us being gutted when he got booked and couldn’t play against the shite.

Hopefully Rovers will find out just how cruel it is at the bottom on Wednesday night. I think we will nick it 1-0 with a goal from Osman.

I agree Steve... I’m actually quite embarrassed by some of the comments posted on here sometimes. I think the majority of blues know a lot about the game and many posters on here speak with a lot of class and intelligence.

Then there’s the gobshites of this world like John Boden above. They have a very short memory - forgetting how the big fella was becoming increasingly influencial in our great run of form up to the Hull game (hence the uproar when he was suspended for the RS games).

They also fail to acknowledge the fact that most men would struggle walking up the stairs with a broken bone in their back, let alone play a game of Premiership football.

The same idiots harping on about Felliani now, are probably the same ones that were saying Cahill was surplus to requirements or we should cash in on Arteta when he wasn’t playing well (also carrying an injury).

As football fans we are allowed to be, and will always be a fickle bunch - but to spout such a load of mis-placed vitriolic bullshit about one of our own is simply pathetic.

Jimmy Rimmer, in reply to your comments about me and Fellaini, my opinion is he is shite and that is the opinion of most Evertonians, the only time I praise him is when I?m rowing with a RS cos you don't concede an inch with them cunts.

This is a site for us therefore we can slag off who we like when we like as long as we don't overstep the mark. If you believe he is any good then you must be easily pleased. Furthermore, I wasn?t arsed about him missing the games against the Shite as previous posts from me on him state that. In respect of his back, it must still be fucked cos he doesn?t leave the fucking ground. He is shite, full stop, and I have not witnessed anything from him to convince me to the contrary, although I would pick him ahead of Osman all day every day.

On Cahill, it was a minority of fans who were questioning him, imo it was more to do with his injuries than his ability.

Jimmy, save your abuse for RS and not fellow blues cos you sound like one of them biased dickheads across the park, they can see no wrong in anything red to the point of embarrassment. We as blues are a class above them wankers.

Finally, Jimmy, although a Scouse exile in the big city, I never miss a match so I?m fully entitled to my view, and whilst we are at it, if your at the match tonight, canvass opinion around you about ?Screech? and you will find I?m not alone. Jimmy, enjoy the game.
