Jags What?

Comments (25)

Jags had a very bad game with Birmingham. I could forgive him due to his rustiness and past performances. But to give a comment like below is totally wrong after giving a shit performance with a goal through his legs and a missed header after coming for the ball thus leaving a big space behind him for Heitinga to cover.

Everton defender Phil Jagielka believes qualifying for the Europa League is beyond them this season.

The Blues were held 2-2 by Birmingham City on Saturday.

"Maybe, realistically, we were never going to be pushing for the European places," said Jagielka.

"The boys had some fantastic results which catapulted us back up the league and put those sorts of ideas back in people’s heads."

Jagielka added: "It is a missed opportunity. We needed to lay down a marker and hope results would go our way."

Surely a good way of making up for his mistakes by putting the team down. It is due to his mistakes that we lost. COYB.

Vincent, we DREW the game because our midfielders were over-run as the game went on - it had very little to do Jagielka and I happen to agree with his comments.

We didn’t lose, we drew. I really don’t think Jags would duck out from admitting a poor performance.
I don’t think he is putting the team down, just perhaps making a realistic assesement of our position. Or perhaps playing down expectation - playing the underdog and dampening pressure can be a smart thing at times.

Nobody’s perfect although from the tone of your letter you feel they should be!! We were done out of two penalties as well you might remember ..... one of them would have been nice!

I don’t think we’re done at all. It’s been a funny old season especially since Jan. Bearing in mind Man C and AV both drew I think THAT is much more significant considering they were playing against lesser league positioned teams compared to our match against direct rivals.

Of course 3pts would have helped us make gains but in my own predictor, we just made 2 points on Man C and AV. I’ve got the end of season going to the last match for 4th place and decided on goal difference. Which is why we’ll finish 5th, 6th or 7th. But then that’s just MHO.

Nothing wrong with that comment at all...He’s being realistic.

As for his display on Saturday..It was simply one of those games that he has every so often where he looks a complete calamity...thankfully they are becoming few and far between for him..Personally I think Heitinga needs to go back where he belongs. It’ll help both him and Jags. Contrary to common opinion I don’t think Heitinga had added much to midfield, that he couldn’t have added from centre half..

Ossie not playing so it’s Jags turn. God forbid if Hibbert gets back into the side!!!!! It must have been Hibbo’s fault actually, as he was on the bench.

Vincent, we didn’t lose and I actually think that Jags is right, we will not qualify for Europe this season.

Watching the whole game I would suggest that Brum ofered nothing in teh way of football, we dominated them until we decided to hoof the ball up field to non-existent forwards. They didn’t look threatening and played out anti-football of 4/5 seasons ago.

If you would have offered me a point before I hand I would have grudgingly accepted it, it was the way it ended up 2-2 that galls us.

Vincent, what a load of old bollocks you talk.

I think you will find that he is trying to put things in perspective and calm all the hype about possabilities of europe.

Shows his true leadership qualities for me.

No player should be exempt from criticism, that includes jags. He was poor saturday, and I struggle to see why he is hailed as our saviour in defence. Yobo gets slated when he has a bad game yet jags can do no wrong in the eyes of many. Dont forget he got found out big style when making his england debut against spain and made some howling errors last season, anyone remeber the back pass to ashley young in the 90 minute which Iost us that game.

A lot of the time you notice Jagielka, he’s making last ditch sliding tackles or last gasp diving lunges to prevent shots or passes around the penalty area. If he could read the game these ’heroic ’ game saving tackles wouldn’t be necessary. Good player but not a great player & never will be.

In defence of Vinny, the comment does Show a bit of a defeatist attitude/mentality though doesn’t it.

Jags isn’t exempt from criticism but he has just come back from a terrible injury and isn’t 100% match fit. Yes he made some mistakes in this match and matches before it but his match saving perfomances have far out weighed his match losing performances(oh and remember we didn’t lose to brum).

Just my opinion, but to many people are far to quick to get on the back of some of our players. Jags far from deserves it. He is one of our best.

Is that Vincent Zhang or Vincent from planet Zhang?
Sorry Vincent you’re on another planet or you’ve been on the Chang too long. We drew the game, not lost it and as I was there to witness it i’d say that Jags had a pretty good game, better than Distin and certainly better than Howard in goal who cannot be blameless for either of the goals.

We didn’t win, but we didn’t lose either. It’s not the end of the world. Birmingham are a pretty OK outfit this season even though they didn’t turn up for the first 20 minutes.

I, like other contributors here think Jags is actually right in what he said. Our qualification into Europe this season relies very heavily on others around us dropping a significant number of points. Not impossible but highly unlikely.

If you make a mistake as a centre half or ’keeper it invariably ends up in at least a goal scoring opportunity as opposed to a striker or midfield player, and I would say that Jags was at fault for both goals on Saturday. However he is bound to be rusty after so long out - as with the Villa home match last year most people will allow him a certain amount of leeway due to his usual faultless displays. Lets hope its out of the way now!

I cant believe this is getting debated, he is just back from a horrible injury and before that was one of our most consistent players and best defender. Give the lad a break!

I think he is actually taking the pressure off by saying this and this could be a shrewd statement. Or he could just be telling the truth.

Also I dont think he was found out vs Spain, kept Torres pretty quiet and was unlucky with the Villa goal. The are two of the best strikers in world football!

Vincent,
The man is only giving his own honest assessment of what he thinks the season will turn out. Would you like instead a load of cringing bullshit what kenwright comes out with. We allcome out with what we think is an honest assessment of a game we have just watched. Keep your eye on him next game, I think you will find that he has nowhere near given up on the season!

If you look at the severity of Jags’ injury...I am relieved to see him playing as well as he has.....I feel like he will get back to last season’s form .

However...he is not there yet and he did not play well v. Brum.....IMO he probably shouldn’t be playing 90 min at this point.....Hopefully he and Arteta won’t get crocked again before next season

Sums up most of the peoples attitude on this site... I’m personally so glad to see Jag’s back, IMHO he’s one of the best 3 players in the team. Give him a break, hes not going to back to his best until next season.

Due to Jagielkas mistakes that we lost? Utter bullshit. Firstly, the game finished 2-2 (although it certainly felt like a defeat after leading 2-0 and seemingly cruising). Secondly, Howard was far more culpable for the first goal in my opinion. He looked to have lost concentration, reacted far too slow and dived like a pissed up pensioner. Joe Hart would’ve definately saved it at the other end.
Jagielka is our best and most consistent defender by some margin and his absence is the main reason our defence has looked less secure this season. The guy was thrown straight back into the starting line up after 10 months out because Moyes knows his importance to the team, and to slate the guy for not being fully up to speed yet is retarded. Distin’s performance was much worse and he’s constantly pish .

What utter shite.
We drew against one of the form sides away and in the first half we were camped in their half and played superb.
Jags was not at fault for that goal it was the slow reactions of our keeper that were.

What a crock of shit. I think Jags is great and not above criticism but some fans need to take of the rosie specs. He’s human and Saturday was not up to his usual standard or the one we’ve come to expect. I just wish the other defenders would get the same support. Why is it when Distin/Yobo clears the ball it’s hoof but Jags and Jonny boy it a pass?

Kevin, Jags is probably our worst culprit for hoof ball. he is a fantastic defender but is passing is well below par. Heitinger is a good passer of the ball and more often than not his trademark 50 yard cross field ball comes off, he is skillful with the ball whereas the others aren’t.

Distin does actually come out with the ball well in some instances, Joey is a liability and Nevilles Rhinoesque floating ball is starting to really do my swede in

You’re off beam here Vincent. He did make mistakes but then who does’nt ? As far as his assessment of our European chances are concerned and believe he is both correct and honest. To be candid I would’nt mind if we did’nt make it to Europe next season. I would far prefer that we concentrate on getting into the top 4 for the season following and into the real European competition. We have the basis of a sound squad capable of playing some exhilarating, classy football and with the benefit of a relatively injury free season we can achieve great things. Sure we need strengthening here and there but we are on the right track and, for reasons already stated, should not be too alarmed if Jags or even Arteta have a few dodgy moments between now and the end of the season.

Jags didnt always hoof it out of defense but having been crucified for passing to a Spaniard whilst playing for England he now opts for the long clearance more often than not!
Ferdinand makes far more mistakes than Jags but doesnt get anything like the stick.
I think Jags will be our best asset next season and every minute he plays, mistakes or not, this season is a blessing.

Personally, I prefer a bit of honesty from players. Anything better than eighth is probably beyond us. I’d rather listen to a bit of reason than Phil Neville-esque bullshit on the eve of every derby telling us how the lads are really up for it before shitting their kecks & rolling over for our customary bi-annual humiliation, whether it be inflicted by 10 men or 11.
