Everton Players at the Olympics?

 28 Comments: First  |  Last

Stuart Pearce has already picked his 35-man provisional squad for Great Britain at the London Olympics, but it hasn't been made public by the FA. The 18-man final squad must be finalised by 6 July, and Pearce is likely to wait till late because of injury concerns.

The nucleus of the squad will presumably be players that Pearce has used in the U21s, with a sprinkling of Welsh and Scottish players thrown in (apparently Jordan Rhodes and Craig Bellamy are in the 35). Players like Welbeck, Henderson and Oxlade-Chamberlain, who are in Poland now, will not be featuring in the Olympic squad. So Rodwell and Barkley ought to be in contention for places.

I don't know if any of the other countries competing are likely to pick Everton players. I don't think Ireland are sending a team, so Coleman is safe.

Any players going to the Olympics will potentially miss our first few games (because they won't be stepping straight back into our team once the tournament is finished). After all that's been said about the importance of a strong start to the season, how do people feel about this?

I think Rodwell going will be great for EFC, to increase his fitness and give him some game time before the season! Moyes has said that Rodwell will only be allowed to go if he proves his fitness.

As for Barkley, he is in the U19s Euros in a couple of weeks and wouldn't see Moyes allowing him to do two tournaments during the summer! Although, if he is allowed, then again it will be good game-time for the lad and both of our youngsters could hit the ground running at the start of the season!

Seem to remember that Rodwell was not fit enough for selection and barkleys not yet an u-21 regular so should be safe...

Isnt Beckham in the squad of 35?

Shows the intentions are more about selling tickets and t-shirts than trying to win it and seeing as Rodwell was the Great Britain's poster boy for the kit I expect him to be named.I dont expect too many players from the same team to be selected or there would be uproar from the clubs with it being so close to the start of the season and its the Olympics so who gives a fuck.

The whole idea stinks, they have ignored each nation's FA to rip the piss and earn money. Fuck the Cockney games and every money-grabbing bastard involved.

Gavin.

Couldn't agree more. If any other shitheaded, southern-based, slime ball of a commentator comes gurning onto the box and points out how much money this preposterous squandering of tax payers money will engender for "the country" I'll feel like lobbing a brick through the screen. This grotesque charade WILL ...may...make money for some fucker but it'll be some east European wide boy with crappy market stalls selling shite from China or Indonesia to gullible tourists, money that will eventually filter through to Estonia, Romania or wherever where it will be spent on some garish mansion and a BMW.

Fuck me, that feels better..

Players getting injured in real internationals is bad enough, in 'friendlies' is horrific and in training for friendlies is just beyond effing belief. And now another mickey mouse excuse to use players by people who don't have to think about paying wages. I guess.

I wonder if whichever committee that's responsible for this has to take out insurance to reimburse clubs for wages during a player's period of injury. Perhaps they should. They might not be so keen to wrap themselves in the flag and claim its all for our glory if they had to pay their way.

Olympics? If all goes well, I'll get back from Spain in time for the United match. You can tell me how it all went then.

Adios.

Don't really see the difference between this and playing pre season games, it's probably better playing in a competitive tournament than some of the shite the club has agreed to take part in.

The Olympics is actually an extraordinary reverse redistribution of wealth. It takes ordinary taxpayers money, money collected from working men all over the country, and organizes an event to which huge numbers of international tourists come to one city, London, enriching airlines, hotels, restaurant owners, big breweries, and the operators of cab fleets - people who are already multi-millionaires. It's a Tory con trick. Incidentally, the entire Royal Family operates largely the same way.

The Olympics squad whatever it is cannot be taken too seriously especially when the likes of Beckham ( way past his best) has been pushing himself in the media for a place irrespective of those who may be worthy on form.
Frankly as we don't have a team who had to qualify we shouldn't even have a team in it. As someone says it's just to sell tickets and so they will include some big names. Is big Dunc.available?

Still reckon Pearce will pick an 'ale-house' team, to get his own back on the FA for picking Hodgson.

Its bad enough getting players fit for the season without all this shit going on. I hope none of our lads are picked to play because of the fear of them getting injured.

I personally think players from the lower leagues and non-league should be picked for this and let them have the glory and be in the spotlight for a change. And this should be brought in for all countries who enter.

Jack Molloy (591) you forgot to mention landlords in Hackney booting out long standing residents to make way for well heeled tourists - they can make £6000 per week on a £350 pw flat;

Didn't Messi play in the Olympics? Ruined his career, didn't it?

There's just too many excuses for footballers nowadays as to why they're not performing. They're always tired, fatigued, unfit, the team isn't built around them, they've got a mental hangover from some past defeat...

Class players remain class, Ronaldo plays every game of the season, bangs in over 50 goals, goes to a tournament, rips that up and then does the same next season. In fact, every other international player doesn't seem to suffer from this whole fatigue excuse, only English ones.

If Rodwell is fit he should go, play a couple of games or whatever it is and it should have no effect on how he turns out for Everton at the beginning of the season. Whatever he does though there'll be an excuse as to why he's not in top form; if he goes to the Olympics, he'll be tired; if he doesn't he'll be rusty, hasn't had much football.

For once, I'd just like to see an Everton player start a season smack in form.

James Martin, I don't agree with you on many things, but on this, I couldn't agree more. These "men" are paid to play football. It's not like they are playing on Saturday an then digging holes or lifting blocks all week. They are paid to train and stay fit. In an off season even as short as football's, they have about 12 weeks off from playing games, unless they're involved in a tournament or two - 3-5 games in those. So, even if Barkley plays two tournaments in the summer, that's maybe 6-10 games he's going to play IF he's involved in every game.

The benefit of these young players being with their national squads far outweighs the setback they supposedly incur by being away from Finch Farm, where they always seem to get injured anyway. In camp, they are around the best players in their age, and some older heads (what harm could Barkley and Rodwell being in camp with Beckham bring?), as well as working with better coaches than what Everton has.

Too much football? Give me a break.

The aging stars who are ''past it'' still crave the limelight. Just look at Scholes who couldn't stay away. Giggs is another example.

Although they can still contribute something at the top level, I believe they shouldn't be considered ahead of the everyday, hardworking, unrecognised clubmen who help make these stars. People like Osman and Hibbert for example. [Don't laugh!]

Say what you want about the team GB but I bet they will be more interesting to watch than the dross the England team served up.
