Next new name: Olof Mellberg
Everton are lining up a swoop for former Aston Villa star Olof Mellberg, according to the Daily Mail.
The 34-year-old defender, who left Villa Park last season after seven years at the club, reminded everyone of his talent by scoring twice against England during Sweden's 3-2 Euro 2012 defeat last week.
And the Toffees hope to pounce now that contract talks between Mellberg and his club, Olympiakos, have broken down, according to the Mirror.
The BBC's Phil McNulty Tweeted, however, that word from the Swedish camp is that this story is "wide of the mark" and there is no interest from Everton.

Why are we linked with a dozen center backs? Its like the only place we have quality back up.
A single swallow does not a summer make.
Didn't moyes get 7 years to view Mellberg in the premiership? I don't remember him ever lighting it up to be honest. Also, we have 3 quality centrebacks in Jags, Distin and Heitinga (we might even have yobo back...), this is not a desperate position we need to fill...
Unless this is Jags replacement to get some cash in ?
Ah, I've just seen the source...
Oh MY God...please NOOOOOOOOOOO !!
Daily mail is shameless. And yet I read all the transfer gossip anyway!
I'm sure the media do this on purpose sometimes, linking Everton with absolute dross like Mellberg and Olsson or linking them with ridiculously good players just so they can get the line 'beyond Everton's price range' in to the story somewhere. We never get rumoured to buy who we're actually buying until it happens
Ha James. Good one and likely true. "Everton's budget probably won't allow", "The strict financial policies of Everton", Moyes would likely have to look elsewhere".
You could do it all day couldn't you? Works every time and no one call "liar".
Latest update says it's aload of crap. Phil McNulty,BBC Sport "Hearing the chat from Sweden that Everton are interested in signing Olof Mellberg is wide of the mark'
A few sites seem to be running this story to. Why on earth do we want that yard dog. We have enough defenders FFS. We need to concentrate on a right & left winger and a strike partner for Jelavic.
'According to the Mirror...'

?
Are the Mirror providing the Mail with scoops now... or is it according to the Mirror Mirror on the wall
Impossible to believe - but he is a proven defender - like cat-nip to the dour one/TV pundit.
James, your absolute dross comment is now shown on a Villa website in a piece written begging him not to play for another club as he is classed as a legend to Villa fans.
If we were to trade Jags in I wouldn't mind him as a short term replacement, these old centre halves always do the job as Gough and Distin have proved for us.
Paul # 571...How can you go along with the signing of a 34 year old ?
We are supposed to be LOWERING the age of the squad according to our illustrious manager.
We MUST hang on to our English players and if the mercenaries want to move around then we should not allow them into our squad.
This talk of Legends is BS...not many players of late could hold a candle to true legends of the past.
This legend garbage being bandied about is an insult to players who have earned the right to be named as legends.
I reckon its your comments that are dross.
We certainly do not need to continue giving has beens and never wasses jobs at the expense of giving our youngsters a chance.
Mellberg?don't make me laugh. Has everyone forgotten Shane Duffy? This lad will play a lot more next season if Moyes doesn't loan him out.

Tom Bowers, I think that Duffy might get a lot of game time next season. I think it will be down to the fact that Moyes will look to sell one of our defensive players if he is forced into selling someone. As cash will be tight I can't see him spending what cash he has on another defender. Duffy has shwon that with a senior player to guide hi, he can do more than an adequate job.

Trevor (580) I agree on this ?Legends? tripe. It seems now that anyone who plays for anyone is a ?Legend?. I once heard some moron on TV say ?And now here is John Barnes who used to be a Liverpool Legend? How do you ?Used to be a Legend? FFS. Journalists just make this tripe up.
Who next from Rangers, David Weir?
You know where the Mail is coming from when their Chief Football Writer is on TalksSport and just says "why dont't Spurs stop mucking about and just appoint David Moyes"
Because Steve, it's alright MOB - I have this covered, he isn't 'good enough' to manage spurs or any other top job over the last 10 years. Cough - bollocks.
