Great Performances

 Comments (41) jump to end

I was away last week and was gutted to miss the victory over United. Today I was talking to a United supporter who was at the game. He described Fellaini's performance as magnificent, In fact,he said that in all his years as a United supporter it was the best single performance he'd ever seen against them.

For those who were there, was it really that good? Finally what is the greatest individual performance anyone has seen from an Everton player?

Yes, Andy, it WAS great performance. As for the greatest individual performance anyone has seen from an Everton player, well, there are so many that I've seen over the years. Alex Young destroying Sheffield Wednesday with a hatrick in 1966, Pickering got a brace, would take some beating. Ferguson against Utd (twice) once when he scored two at Old Trafford and that game at Goodison......he was unplayable.

Two spring to mind.
Bally v liverpool I think it was his 2nd or 3rd game for us.

Rooney v Bolton,i think he was only 17.That was the day everyone realised what a player he was.Didn`t score but could have had 4

Just before anyone else beats me to it, I was at the game when DF scored two at OT. Brilliant.

I'm sorry, it was a good performance, all the better because it was against Man U, but it is not the best performance ever seen against United and it is certainly not the best performance by any Everton player ever. Tactically it worked well as it provided a good outball, against Villa when we had more of it in midfield it wasn't as effective. Messi champions league final 2009 is a great performance against Man U, fat Ronaldo in the champions league was a great performance against them, as was Kakas in the champions league semi final. One header from a corner and a lot of good hold up play isn't the same as dribbling past half a team and banging in 2 or 3 goals. A great performance from Fellaini but I think the school of science may have just spurned up a couple of better ones in its many illustrious years.

64 or 65 Denis Stevens played Untd all on his own, put the ball over the bar fron 5ft out, laughed his head off at the absurdity of it and as still MotM.

The whole Team in 67 when we played them 1st game of the season, its on youtube or some such, well worth a watch.

Ball Vs RS. Too many from the Catterick era to even remember, when we ripped all and sundry new ones without seemingly any real effort.

Jan(?) 85 at Leicester hard fought slog with a result at the end, that was when the league was won mentally all the team had to do was keep on keeping on. The Spurs game away towards the end of the season...unplayable. Bayern and Rapid, icing on the cake...European and World Club Team of the Season.

*sigh*

Remember Saha's 4 against Blackpool a couple years back? What a match and what a performance from him. I have only been supporting the club for 5 years but in my relatively short time as an Evertonian that was the best individual performance I have witnessed. He was in perfect position to score at every opportunity and was impossible to defend. If only he had been more consistent, what a player we would have had!

He must have been good because Paul Merson on Sky Soccer Saturday said "If he could play like that every week he aint gonna be at Everton".

Duncan McKenzie v Stoke city..1977 FA Cup third round I think. Stoke couldnt get near him that day.

Paul Andrews - that performance vs Bolton was amazing. Who was the old curly haired defender (?) he put on his arse?

Personally, I think Fella's performance eclipsed that. It wasn't just exciting, he was dominant in every way.

Dunc against Liverpool at home. It was a night game. Forget the score but remember the goal when he had his back to goal dropped his left shoulder and touched it to his right then turned and drilled a curling shot from outside the box low and hard past David James.

The week before every Pundit was giving superlatives about Zola's performance in the fa cup semi final and talkin about him bring best player in the league. Hansen commented that dunc's display was the best he'd seen and that he would choose to play against Zola every week as opposed to ferguson as Dunc's display meant he was simply unplayable. Now when Hansen gives that praise to a guy playing for us and against the shite you know it's got to be some performance.

Pat -

I've been in for 6 years. I remember that Saha performance. But I honestly believe Felliani's game this last Monday trumps that.

He was just dominant.

I know it's recent in the mind, but I truly believe that was the best performance out of anyone in a blue shirt in the last 6 years.

I joked to my mate, an Evertonian born and bred and now living in the States, that Man Utd was going to put in a £40 million bid the next morning. He was that good.

I could pick many of his games as the best Everton player performance in my time but it'd always be Alan Ball, the best player I've seen in a Blue shirt and possibly the most underrated England player ever. If I had to pick one game though it was Wolves away in the 69-70 Championship winning season when we won 2-0 against a good Wolves team and Ball was sublime, his white boots spraying the ball around the Molyneux pitch ably assisted by the almost equally brilliant Colin Harvey and Howard Kendall. He was given 10 by all of the Sunday papers who gave marks for performance. There were tens of thousands of jubilant Evertonians there that magnificent sunny day.

Massively experienced and Rooney bamboozled him, left him on his arse, and jogged past.

Until, he went back deeper in midfield, I also thought he was fantastic. I've been following Everton since 77, I can't remember every game but that's the best performance I've seen in an Everton shirt. I remember Andy Gray against Sunderland and I'm sure Peters Reid and Beardsley must have also put in some performances.

Kanchelskis versus Wednesday. The 5 - 2 away when he scored a hat-trick, and a real enjoyable 2 - 2 when we were losing to 2 goals from Mark Pembridge.

Arteta vs Fiorentina at home.

Ferguson's hat-trick vs Bolton when Dome made him captain.

Rooney versus Bolton was a good one. Rooney versus West Brom I think it was another similar game. He destroyed Darren Moore and messed with him like a cat messes with a mouse. It was that bad you felt for the big defender – totally outclassed.

Andy Gray destruction of Fortuna Sittard with a hat trick that brought down the house on a European night at Goodison. A nice taster to what was to come two months later on the greatest of all Goodison nights.

Andy, yep Felli really was that good.

Martin Dobson for a number of games in the 70s – virtually kept us up.

On this subject I'd like to doff my cap to General Gibson, that lad will become a legendary captain here if he keeps this up.

Every pass is calculated, accurate and effortless, the ball to Jelavic which got the Villa lad sent off was frightening. Only he in that stadium saw it, without stopping the ball he just made a subtle body adjustment and the Villa defence was picked and unlocked.

This composure has rubbed off on others, Felli's release is obvious to all but Ossie is at it as well and Jags is playing like he does for England.

£500k?? – possibly the best buy in the history of the Prem.

Like Karl (253) Duncan McKenzie V Stoke.

It wasn't a cup final or a massive game but as an example of one Everton player almost playing a team by himself, that's as close as I've ever seen.

To say he took the piss would be an understatement.

Beating three or four players at a time and sometimes returning to beat players again.

Everything he tried seemed to come off.

It was a player simply playing for the fun of it.

The following day (Sunday) on The Big Match or...whatever it was, Gerald Sinstadt asked Tommy Smith for his MOTM.

He gave it to Andy King I think.

When Sinstadt suggested this choice might upset some Evertonians, the miserable, dirty, ugly poc-marked racist twat said something about "Judging footballers not circus performers".

No doubt Duncan had this in his mind when he nutmegged Smith, leaving him on his arse in the Semi in 77.

Eugene, McKenzie taking the piss out of the neanderthal Smith is one of my favourite memories.
Incidentally, for reasons I have yet to understand, probably because the remote was too far away from my Cabernet affected legs, I ended up watching some ridiculous programme about Premiership football mistakes hosted by everymans own half-wit, Robbie Savage and some chav with Red Rums teeth almost filling his mouth. There was a brief interview with the odious Graham Poll at his house talking about the mistake he made in not allowing the "goal" in the Derby when Westerveld kicked it against Hutchinson's back. Fuck me, on the wall behind him was a framed Liverpool shirt from Gerrard.! No doubt concealing a brown paper envelope full of gelt.

Ray, pre-season - the season Clattenberg didn't give us the most obvious pen I've ever seen against The Victims - the shifty twat had been taken on a pre-season tour with them and had apparently, even received a signed shirt from the squad.

I genuinely try (ok, not always initially but after I've calmed down) to see things from the ref's point of view.

I believe there's too much looking at ultra-slo mo and saying after the 4th viewing "SEE, HE GOT IT WRONG!"

The game is played at such a pace that it is often impossible to see everything that is going on (especially offsides and players diving as soon as a ANY contact is made).

But I genuinely think Clattenberg is corrupt.

I was in the lower Bullens, in the right hand corner (looking at the pitch) when 'Carra' wrestled, then slam-dunked Lescott to the deck.

I looked at Clattenberg who was looking RIGHT at the incident - he saw 'nothing'.

He KNEW it was a 100% pen and wasn't going to give it.

And just in case there was any doubt, remember he ignored Kuyt's two-footed tackle (a DEFINITE red) and sent two of our players off, one after being advised by Gerrard that this was the right course of action.

Personally, I'd love to see him chosen to referee at Goodison and get, as my late father used to say, 'his'.

Eugene I think that's the most blatant example of a ref doing all he can to influence a result I've seen. I remember saying to my dad at half-time "the ref is doing well", it's almost as if he waited to see if Liverpool could win the game by themselves and when they didn't he took matters into his own hands. There were numerous disgusting decisions in that second half.

Too young to see Alex Young or Alan Ball but Neville Southall must have played a number of games which typified "great performances".

Agree with the Andy Gray performance v Sunderland in the 4-1 win during the 80s though, collectively, the entire team was like a well-oiled Rolls Royce / Ferrari engine that day. We even gave them a goal start.

I think time magnifies great efforts and I suppose that's how it should be. I think I remember a magnificent performance from a very young Joe Royle against West Ham. Alan Ball's derby debut. Actually, the best performance I ever seen from Alan Ball was for England against Rumania;in the old nations cup,I think. Tommy Wright played that day and had a great game.

Dave Watson in the 95 fiinal .Rioch in a cup win against Ipswich,AJ's derby and of course the Duncans.

Two dominant individual performances for me and I could not choose between them.

Alan Ball v Man U who were then the champions with Best, Charlton & Law we won 3 - 1 at Goodison.

Duncan Ferguson v Man U at Old Trafford when he scored 2 and battered Bruce & Pallister for 90 minutes in a 2-2 draw. He was unplayable against the dominant centre back partnership of the time.

So whilst Felli was awesome against Man U you must take into account who he was playing against - that is why the 2 choices above stick in my mind because of the quality of the opposition.

Eugene Ruane @290

The annoying thing with Poll was that he attempted to say that he'd blown BEFORE the ball went over the line, but TV replays showed quite clearly that he'd blown afterwards.Lying twat. I agree that, with all the camera positions at grounds these days that referreeing is a thankless task, (providing we can agree that £60k plus expenses a year is neither here nor there), but there is a lot to be said for refs coming out after a game and explaining why they made a particular decision. If we can see a genuine mistake then fair enough, it happens, or maybe he could point out a part of the law that vindicates his decision, but the wall of silence that surrounds them is doing them, and football, no favours.

Don't get me started on Clattenburg.

Mike Hughes (306) - you're right re Southall.

I seem to remember a game against Sheff Wed (I think) when we were going for the title.

They battered us and we won 1-0, Southall kept everything out.

Also in the first game against Gillingham (at their place) in the cup (84 or 85, my memory is goosed) we should have lost 6-0.

Again big Nev kept them out.

I do remember after that game seeing Brian Glanville on the train and asking him what 'Stakhanovite' meant.

In a match report the week before, he'd described Trevor Steven as 'the ever Stakhanovite Trevor Steven'.

Apparently Stakhanov was some Russian miner who was a dead good (hard-working) or..um..something.

Paul Joy (325) Remember both performances well. Oddly enough the 3-1 win against Man U still survives on tv recording and was shown on ESPN a few years ago. It was the first game of the 67-68 season and of course Man U were reigning Champions. The cameras were on the Goodison Road side in those days, and I kept hoping the camera would pan down to the front by the cage to see a nine year old lad with his dad. Yours truly of course. But alas they didn't.

Big Dunc against Newcastle in '96.

It was Shearers debut but Duncan completely dominated their entire back 4 all by himself.

That is still my favourite ever game. I thought we would do so well that season.

We didn't..

Jamie (256) I'm not sure you can compare the two. Saha's performance in the blackpool match was down to, in large part, positioning and anticipation of passes. Fellaini had a different role. He was absolutely dominant and his performance was due to his ability to make a pass and use his size to bully the defense. I had more fun watching Fellaini but I think Saha deserves a mention.

Paul and Ernie 262 / 263 - I was sat at the bottom of the Main Stand on the right hand side for that Rooney game v Bolton. For the first half he was playing much of his time on right so we essentially saw him take Campo to pieces, including putting him on his backside, which I think he may even have done twice. Goes down as one of my favourite performances ever, I'd never seen anyone play the game with such combined simplicity, desire and skill. I walked into my mother in laws kitchen that night, stunned, and said 'We have got one hell of a player on our hands......'. I'm sure it ended 0-0, how he didn't get a hat-trick is a mystery to this day. Awesome. I only saw Fellaini's performance on tele and have been telling people it's the best I've seen in a blue shirt so thanks for reminding me of the one which I think just pips it just because it was so special on so many levels.

Paul, I remember that Rooney game, it was like the old school yard when the keeper just kept booting it to the tricky lad on the wing who would dribble rings around everyone, that's what our keeper did that day and that is what Rooney did too. that`s why I came on here last week defending Moyes regarding youth players as Man Utd have not improved Rooney enough, I have never seen him play better than that still to this day and you can throw in the league cup game at Newcastle too.

In my sixties now , having seen most of the great performances mentioned here. The Alan Ball performances against MUtd and Liverpool stand out as does a great game by Alex young against Spurs in 64 or 65. Bbearing in mind the pace of the game, the quality of the Premier League with some of the worlds best players and the undoubted superior fitness of modern players ( maybe an argument for another thread) I would say that even though the two players above are like gods to me, Fellaini'sshow on Monday night was the best I have ever seen from an Everton player. It really was that good. It was so good that when I got home from the game I watched it again on TV just to make sure it was real. If he can do this regularly against the top teams, I fear we will have to cash in on his value

Although not a crowd or my favourite, Mick Lyons gave a few impressive performances back in the 70's. He'd have run through a brick wall for Everton being a local lad and although a Centre-half (and that gives my age away) he would be pushed up front if we were chasing a game or had no striker.

I remember one game against Sunderland back in the 70s and he was picked to play up front and in those days there was none of this build from the back-when the goalie had the ball the other 20 players would be detailed to occupy a 40yard rectangle either side of the half-way line waiting for the huge kick out. Sunderland had a very good Centre-half by the name of Dave Watson (no not him) who later played for City and played several times for England.

Mick Lyons was the best header of a football I've ever seen and that includes big Dunc and Felli. He won every header against Watson who in the end gave up and abandoned the task of challenging him and went and positioned himself nearer his penalty area and left Mick to his headers on his own!

Eugene 290 and Paul 295 - 'The Clattenberg Game'. I was at the complete opposite side to you Eugene, far right hand side of main stand and we saw it clear as day from there! That second half was astonishing, and that fact that game will always carry his name says it all, plus the fact he's never been allowed back since! Scumbag.

Re: the Clattenberg Derby- my mate had it spot on. There were 3 crucial incidents-the Hibbert penalty and sending off, the 2 footed flying tackle from Kuyt and the GBH on Lescott. If any of these had been the other way round so would have been the ref's decisions. Even RS were on phone-ins embarrassed.
