Old Evertonians in Adelphi Autograph Mystery

 Comments (13) jump to end

Many years ago, I gained possession of an autographed page of notepaper from The Adelphi Hotel, Liverpool 1 – no date available, entitled "Ex-Evertonians".

The page contains 10 old Evertonians' autographs, many of whon will have passed away. I don't know all the names because I am not and Everton fan but I believe they are Dixie Dean, Tommy Lawton, Joe Mercer, Willie Cook, Howard Kendall, Jack Thomson and four others. Perhaps you can help in identifying the other names for me – I have sent in a scanned copy.

I would be prepared to sell the autographs if desired.

Many thanks

Long before my time but I thought I'd heard that Dean hated being called Dixie. Did he still sign Dixie Dean?

Hi, I think the 3rd signature is Norman Greenhalgh.

Andy (325) — you're right: Dean did hate being called Dixie, but he did sign autographs "Dixie Dean".

I think the mystery man is Norman Greenhalgh - wing half in the mid / late 30s, played in the same era as the others (apart from Mr Kendall, of course).

Steve and John have got it between them, apart from Howard Kendall. That's not Howard's signature.

Not sure who it was, but I think there was a football writer called Don Kendall. Could possibly be him

Should this be added to the David France collection?

There was a Jack Kendall who played in the mid 20's - could be him?

Thanks for posting this Dave, fascinating. Is there any other provenance? What the event was, date etc? and more importantly, have you contacted the Everton collection and do you have a price? Do keep us updated as we are all interested.

All these players played together in 1937, with the exception of John (Jack) Kendall who I'm pretty sure was a Goalkeeper when William Ralph signed for Everton, and played in the same team as him in 1925/26.

Here's a mystery that occured at the Adelphi:

I went to a Bluekipper do years ago and made a winning bid for a casey signed by Alan Ball. I collected the ball which I promptly handed over in person to a well known female in a senior managerial position (so I could go out and get pissed up on booze).

I was assured that my ball (and my name was used) would be stored safely until I returned the following night for retrieval.... when I returned the following night to collect my prize, I was greeted with "Who the hell are you... get out of my hotel!"

Where's my fucking ball?
