30/07/2012 | Comments (18)
His name cropped up in connection with Everton a few days ago and the Daily Mail are now carrying a report linking David Moyes with a swoop for Blackburn defender, Grant Hanley.

The 20-year-old has showed promise at Ewood Park and has been capped three times by Scotland.

No fee is mentioned in the report.

Defender is a vague term.....
Hopefully he isn't a central defender.
Right back???

A couple of players in the Tim Cahill mould (good in the air) please... aged 23ish and under £2mil. Any in the Championship that spring to mind? Perhaps this time with a bit of pace and an eye for a pass when playing centre midfield/forward.

Man.. it still bugs me we cocked up the Kyle Naughton / Kyle Walker episode...

Hanley is a centre back with a lot of promise. Not buying this rumour at all though. The lad wants first team football, not to be stuck behind Heitinga, Jags and Syl.

As for Walker and Naughton...how did the club cock that up then? Should we have trumped Spurs and offered £13 million for two right backs? Because that is the only way we would get either of them. If you're going to have a pop at the club, at least pick a valid subject.

Don't mention Walker and Naughton...Imagine our squad if we had those two now :( (Caulker looks a very accomplished cb as well as a full back)

I thought Spurs offloaded one of the Kyles?

Or at least he was out on loan last season as I saw the name at another club?

Kyle Naughton was on loan at Norwich last season I believe. Think they have been trying to get him permanently this summer but yet to succeed.

One of these summers we are going to have to buy a right back. Unless Coleman starts doing well there.

I think that Hibbert has one or two good seasons left in him yet. The practical benefit of getting a right back in at the moment is cover. Pip won't last for ever but we may get this season out of him. I think that if Coleman doesn't produce the goods this season, either at right back or in midfield you may see him go next summer and Pip retire. This would allow Moyes the incentive as well as a little bit of cash and spare wages to get a right back.

For now, a right back is not a priority in any shape or form. For me, what's left of this transfer window revolves around keeping our better players and seeing if anyone comes in for the fringe players. Getting rid of the fringe players might give Moyes some cash to work with. Seeing his better players leave means panic buying and clearing the debts.

We still need another central defender. Distin has probably got just another good season and then probably rotating center back the season after. So yes, Hanley, if he is any good, will come useful maybe the season after.

I am more worried about our Goalkeeping situation. Mucha has hardly featured in the pre-season. The young Polish lad let in 3 playing for the reserves recently and by most accounts had a howler. I think we need a credible back-up to Howard very soon.

Rather save our money(what little we have) and give Duffy more game-time

Duffy was immense when I saw him in Dundee. Its time he was given some more game time.

I think Hanley is left-footed, which makes him more likely. Moyes likes to have centre backs with the correct foot (see Lescott replaced by Distin).

Duffy, Heitinga and Jags are all right-footed. Bidwell is left footed, but needs to grow a bit to make centre-half at Prem level, Unless he is the new Baresi - yes please!!!!

Craig Gordon is still unattached I think. As for young Championship players in the mould of Tim Cahill circa 2004, Sean Murray at Watford is promising, Andy King at Leicester, Will Buckley of Brighton and James Bailey at Derby could all be worth a punt. Problem is they would cost money, which we don't have. Let's hope Moyes has identified two or three frees/loans, notably right wing, striker and the ever popular utility player.
