The Rumour Mill

Johnson links grow

18/08/2012 | Comments (23)
Update Rumours linking Adam Johnson are growing with the Blues believed to have made an approach to take the winger on a season-long loan from Manchester City.

Sunderland, however, have apparently lodged a bid of around £12m to take Johnson back to the northeast by signing him outright.

It's not clear just how surplus to Roberto Mancini the England international is and whether he would prefer to loan him out or offload him completely.

We let in the 3rd fewest goals last season and finished 7th. 50 goals scored. It appears we have firepower enough to improve on that total.

I've heard of Johnson, haven't followed him. Hearing his name as a potential in, let me ask. What will he bring to our ability to attack? As a defender, release man, shooting on goal, all of it. Could he improve our chances?

Tracking back is one of his weaknesses!

Gerry - Is that satirical or does he just stand around and watch on defense? Because if he won't track back, let whatever club Yak's playing at have him.

I wasn't as impressed with him after seeing Mirallas in action. Johnson tends to stand around too much and only gets going when he gets the ball. Maybe Mancini is hoping Moyes can get Johnson to work harder.

I am suddenly getting very picky. Must be the overabundance we are experiencing.

He would certainly improve our chances of top 4/cup victories but, as an English player, he is an expensive commodity. Quick, good on the ball. If we can get him signed on for the year without giving up whichever proverbial extremities we would stand to lose in the deal, we would be in incredible shape.

Thanks Pat.

Have to say, nice hearing about good players in.

What's the situation with Guidetti? Is he definitely back at Feyenoord or is he possibly available as well?

A few days ago Citeh fans on the Guardian blog site seemed sure we were in a with a good shout for both players following the Rodwell transfer.

I'm not a fan of Johnson, but he would be a good loan signing. He made a massive leap from Boro to City without ever really justifying himself. He is an out-and-out left winger, who only got shifted to the right so him and Downing could play in the same side. He's not a right winger. Get Matt Phillips instead please.

He's like Drenthe, but without the pace, strength, or effort.

Always looks to me like he couldn't give a flying fk.

I'd pass on him.

Would we still be attempting to sign this lad if we get Miralles? Wouldn't both players expect first team football? Therefore Peinnar or Naismith won't be playing? By the way Phil I noticed Phillips didn't play against Millwall yesterday because he is in talks with Southampton

Gareth, I live for the day that I read a story, even if it's based solely on conjecture, about how someone is so unhappy that they, as a quality player, can't keep a place in the Everton squad. I have no problem bringing Johnson in even if he is just there to whine about how he is always used as a sub.

Think this would have happened by now what with our dealings with City in the Rodwell deal.

It may be that they are hoping to sell and if no bid comes then we have first loan option. A great winger in my mind who has a point to prove as he looks to establish himself as an international. Great of it happens, not too bothered of it doesn't especially as doubt we could afford him after the loan finished...

Pat, so do I! I just don't think we could afford this lads wages or terms, ie reassurance that he would play most games when available, if Moyes other targets come to fruition. If anything I would be more concerned if the likes of Fellaini was injured as we do not have genuine cover for him. I know the likes of Adams has been dismissed but I think he could do a job for us when required.

Albert, #192 "I wasn't as impressed with him after seeing Mirallas in action."

Where did you see him in action? Please don't say youtube. I'm still staggered from someone else basing their assessment of Mirallas on Fifa on some frigging console!

I would not believe the date in The Mirror — never mind the rumours. They have not got one rumour right, so I would not take any off this on board.

He looked OK the other night for England. If we are after him a swap deal with Rodwell would have been on the cards though wouldn't it?

Im with a few others on here, I don't like him. I don't think his style or attitude would stick right with Moyes neither. Last season he kicked off about not starting after he had come on a couple of times and scored, Mancini was then asked about it and replied with that Johnson seems to think he scores a goal and thats his job done for the rest of the game, and acts as such. He needs to work hard in 'each moment' as he likes to say.

Heard from some Manchester friends who work at city is that he prefers a move to the north east with Sunderland and I believe that's where the lad is originally from so it makes sense.

I've heard Man City don't want to sell but are open to a loan deal
It would make sense to loan him to a team that has the potential to take points of the top 4 (everton, spurs etc) so we are in with a good chance of getting him on loan
Also city would still be paying a large part of his wages.

Dont think we need him any more. Not a Moyes type player. We have Naismith and Mirallas now for the right and Pienaar/Gueye on the left so where would he fit in?
