Reports: Pereira favourite among eight candidates

22/05/2013 | Comments (94)
Bill Kenwright's shortlist of candidates to replace David Moyes features eight managers, all of them having been favoured by oddsmakers at some point in the last fortnight, according to Sky Sports.

The Mirror, meanwhile, claim that Vitor Pereira leads the field and is the favourite to become the new Blues boss.

Five of the men mentioned by Sky Sports are external candidates, among them Pereira (whom reports in Portgual suggested yesterday has signed a pre-contract agreement with Everton), Roberto Martinez, Michael Laudrup, Malkay Mackay and Roberto di Matteo.

Three internal candidates — Phil Neville, David Weir, and Alan Stubbs — are also apparently in the frame.

Kenwright admitted a few days ago that the he had "people" in mind for the vacant Goodison hotseat and that most of the candidates mentioned most often in the media were under consideration.

Despite leading Porto to a second Portuguese title, Pereira is out of contract in the summer and would therefore be an attractive option for Everton as there would no compensation due for his services.

Mackay, meanwhile, insists he is fully focused on his role at Cardiff as he prepares the Bluebirds for life in the Premier League for the first time.

"The next couple of months are crucial for our team surviving in the Premier League," the Scot says.

“For the last three weeks I've been looking at different players. I'm in the office every other day trying to make contact with clubs, agents and players.

“I'm getting on with my job. There's a lot of work to be done in the next couple of months.”

So SSN are speculating after collating some of the speculation. I'm finding the whole thing addictive. Maybe Bill should create a Krypton test type of show for prospective managers and sell it to ITV.

I bet the bookies are going to make an absolute fortune, they seem to be pushing a different market every day.

It looks like we're waiting for Martinez to make his mind up before we can interview him.
Does that then put us under pressure to hire him ahead of Periera.
If Pereira was No1 choice why wait for Martinez?
What if Martinez chooses Malaga over Everton?
It's all starting to get Very stressful.

Not sure about Pereira. Seems like he is the front runner having signed a contract already?
One full season with Porto and the Portuguese league always dominated by 3/4 teams with the rest way behind. Stil,l if he's the man then we have to hope heintegrates quickly and maybe bring in some Portuguese talent though I would have fancied Martinez first on his Prem.experience.

Listened to a guy called Beesley from the Liverpool Echo on TalkSport tonight. Apparently Pereira's agent has told Billy Liar that he wants the job. He also said there had been contract negotiations over the last few months over the job with them. That blows Billy Liar's and Moyes's story that Man Utd only happened over the weekend before it was announced.

What a choice to pick from! I think it is a win, win scenario really for Billy boy. Pick Pereira on the free with either Neville, or more likely, Stubbs waiting in the wings if it goes pear shaped. Stubbs/Neville gets to know another manager's methods and gets his pro qualification. We need something different in our play, with the Moyes style of play to fall back on with Stubbs/Neville in charge if it all goes Pete Tong.

Klinsmann

Why is everybody's dick so hard for Periera though? It's said the Porto fans can't wait to see the back of him even though he won the league. Doesn't sound too promising. He has no experience in English football. Can he speak fluent English? I think some of you are allowing yourselves to be swept over by the notion of a continental type, the type I have always been skeptical about ever being able to do a job at Everton.

Hoddle as he's the only pundit who's opinions I respect. Plus his knowledge of the game is legendary and tactics-wise he's considered in that elite group of top, top managers.

So Rpobbie, a fella who's won two league titles on the trot on a smaller budget then Everton's, who discovered Falcao and Hulk for nothing isn't good enough in your opinion? Oh and btw, his English is perfect. Satisfied?

Gary Carter
786 Posted 23/05/2013 at 00:26:58
I can honestly say I've never heard the words "Hoddle, tactics, legendary, elite and top top managers" anywhere near being put together in the same paragraph !!! In fact, whatever your on I'll have some mate, he was a loon as a manager and is embarrassing as a critic. The other day he actually said that when a corner or freekovk goes into the box every pair of eyes are on the ball !!! This would slightly contradict the rest of the footballing world that moans about the number of offences in the box in these situations with defenders wrestling attackers to the ground WITHOUT even looking at the ball but instead just the player they are marking !!!

And as for the person above who said they would prefer Martinez (consistent loser) to Pereira (consistent winner) based on martinez's prem experience !!! I'm almost speechless, you want his experience of nearly getting relegated until finally actually achieving it at a club where a portion of the fans moan about a manager that consistently got top 7 finishes having taken over when we were like Wigan !!!! I mean why not appoint Jewell or Bruce, both of them actually did much better with Wigan than Martinez !!!! I fucking despair !!!

Robbie- He speaks fluent English. Porto fans are complaining because they are spoiled and saw their team win the Champions League and a treble with the two managers before him. So a league title and going undefeated is just the pits. Bunch of assholes if you ask me.

I'm sure the same crap was spouted about AVB just by virtue of following the most accomplished manager in world football. Fact of the matter is Pereira's resume looks a whole lot better than the last guy we had, not to mention he prides himself on his tactical acumen and unearthing young talents, something that was sorely missed here the last 11 years.

Would do me fine. Those fans complaining that only 3 or 4 clubs can win the Portuguese title, hello, remind me how many clubs have won the premiership in the last fifteen years? Four? Huge difference then! The man is a winner, if he is prepared to take over our club with our tight finances then lets go for it. We may even get a coach willing to at least try and win at the top four (and Liverpool) and not continuously complain about taking knives to a gun fight. Cannot understand the enthusiasm for Martinez, relegation fights every season, his teams couldnt defend yes please Roberto we really need a clone of Walker and Smith again!

I said in another post that Pereira is a massive risk. He has limited experience and inherited AVB's already successful squad. I'm not sure I understand why people are getting obsessed with him over a comment he made about the style of football he likes.

Personally, and I know I'm in the minority, I'd like an internal promotion. Someone coming in and ripping Moyes structure apart is likely to cause huge instability. We'll be back to the days of fighting relegation. Unless BK has the £50m that Southall asked for, we'd be stupid to bring in someone who will make wholesale changes (and I doubt Pereira will know a huge amount about the team we have at the moment)

Phil Roberts
822 Posted 23/05/2013 at 08:32:40
Kevin #818 - If the MOB were right, and this guy is better than Moyes, why have one of the biggest clubs in the world not gone for him and instead gone for someone second best?

I presume the answer is they are stupid and hoodwinked by SAF because he is Scottish and that this will ruin MU?

For me Pereira is a great match for the role, can't get over excited as Bungling Bill is involved and he never fails to let the club down. if and it's a big if, he does come I feel that most fans would welcome him without outlandish expectations; we aren't going to win the league overnight but we are also not going to become uncompetitive either, I hope to see more attacking football, more entertainment and no more of this defeatist shite and knife to a gunfight twaddle.

What nobody has picked up on here is that if we were to get this man it would increase our chances of him possibly bringing Christian Atsu with him, the highly rated winger. Imagine a team with him and Mirrallas running at norwich and hull city defenses!

The other side is that Pererra may have no clue how to sign anyone and he just brings all his veterans from the Porto with him.

Not very Impressed the Echo thinks we won't appoint till July.

Why is this?

Anyone interested will have already declared there interest surely the process can be conducted in a week.

As for Periera the Porto fans wanted better in Europe ie Champions League.. So they Qualified out of the group stages only to be narrowly defeated by the excellent Malaga who in turn were unlucky against Dortmund.

A disaster we can only dream of so lets not use the 'Porto fans don't like him' argument.

Interesting piece from a football writer in portugoal an interview with a different league website.'.Periera has a clear style of play that he favours over all others - high pressing, lots of time on the ball and a very compact midfield. To be honest, he hasn't had that many seasons as a head coach, which is why it is hard to rely on solid evidence of his flexibility. Throughout the time he was at FC Porto, he insisted on those same principles, stating that was the team's identity and he would never be one to shy away from it.

As a tactician, I believe he is one of the most competent around. His ability to create numerous variations of the same pattern made FC Porto highly uncomfortable to play against, since the team were perfectly aware of their tasks and when they should be performed.

Pereira was actually dedicated to lifting his team past AVB's already attractive brand of football and piling even more pressure upon his opponents. It should be interesting to see whether he will adapt to the David Moyes view of Everton or whether he will try to impose his view.'

By the way, does anyone else think this 'shortlist' is a load of old bollox?

Kevin (867) - "By the way, does anyone else think this 'shortlist' is a load of old bollox?"

Yes.

For me there's a VERY good chance it's just smoke and mirrors from one of the world's great snake-oil salesmen.

Could backfire though, if he gives us a list with a few 'shexy' continental names on it, then appoints Stubbs, he might find......actually, come to think about it, he'd be fine.

I just remembered this is Everton and we're now conditioned to swallow BKs shite with little more than a tut-tut.

As for Pereira, he'd be my choice - NOT because I think we'll win anything or finish higher up the league.

He'd get my vote simply because he's NOT 'Pip' and he's NOT Stubbs.

Phil, I think the club released it's 'shortlist' after taking the top 5 names from fans on who they wanted as their next manager.

It didn't matter that Laudrup had a £10m release clause, and didn't want the job - he is being 'considered.'

Give the people what they want (then shaft 'em)

Colin 770 - interesting list. Thankfully no Rafa, but if we were talking 8 candidates, I would have Stubbs / Irvine instead of Hoddle. Apart from being mental, I think his last proper coaching job was England over a decade ago?

My numero uno would be Perreira followed by Di Matteo, then Klinsmann.

Simeone is a miracle worker and I was a fan until I saw the recent Copa Del Rey final. Atletico were horrible to watch, diving and spoiling, and were extremely fortunate to win. Had they lost he would have been slaughtered. Much like the man himself during his playing days.

I hope the Perreira story is true, but if not Di Matteo would be a perfect fit. Chip on his shoulder (like Villas Boas, something to prove) and knows the PL and lower divisions. Failing that, the continuity option of Stubbs/Irvine would do for me - until we get a proper owner.

1318:
BBC Sport's Ben Smith learns that Wigan chairman Dave Whelan and manager Roberto Martinez have held "extremely constructive" talks, but no decision on Martinez's future will be made today.

Smith adds that the pair will reconvene at the start of next week - either on Monday or Tuesday - with Whelan wanting to see if he can fulfil a number of requests from his manager relating to the construction of a new training ground and the academy.

Eugene - is there a fertile middle ground between Mr Grumpy and Timmy Mallett? There is, as you well know.

If we're going to get another grumpster then this time he'd better be a winner. Likeable or not, SAF did the business. Moyes was charmless and humourless without getting anywhere near silverware, which is the worst of both worlds.

The other theory about Martinez could be that he backs a bit of bottle. Similar to Moyes at Everton, he is in his comfort zone with his Chairman and maybe a bit afraid to step outside of that right now.

And before I get jumped on, I am only implying Moyes was in his comfort zone, not his lack of bottle.

If Martinez is using the interest to improve his position at Wigan we don't need or want him, I understand that he probably hasn't had any official offers as yet , but he must be in the running for Stoke or us and so I can't understand why the wait until next week. He either wants to manage in the PL or he wants to stay at Wigan. IMHO strike him off the list, this is the third close season he has ummed and ahhed about moving.

You're being unrealistic, Patrick. Everyone in the world who is in a job and receives overtures from someone else will use that to improve their position. It's a supply and demand thing.

You're expecting him to resign on the off chance that we offer him a job! Unrealistic. Has it crossed your mind that he doesn't want the Stoke job? He probably wants to leave if the right opportunity arises (again, like anyone else in any line of work); if not, he will stay put. There's nothing flaky or disreputable about it.

The only people enjoying this is the Bookies.

Each news article brings a rush of money for someone.

I left the favourites alone and went for value.. Duncan at 66/1 only I don't think he wants it. Damn

I read the A Bola piece last night. "A long ago announced but only now officially out of the Everton Manager". And, " Contacts have been intensified even from a distance".
Sorry about the Google translation but, this appears to suggest DM going to Man U has been known about for while.
A great deal has been written on TW regarding Pereira. He's my favourite with Pip as No2.

Robbie Muldoon @895:

"As for his English-speaking abilities, I believe he can muster the odd sentence, but I'm not sure if he is able to provide a coherent discourse."

Are you talking about Pereira or Kenwright?

Paul Ferry, shame on you. I have lived in Cape Town for 20 years and have been yearning for the Crosby experience the entire time. Honest............

If Pereira gets the job then young Barkley would be the biggest winner. I honestly can't see Bk going for anyone else than Neville/Stubbs.

I don't mind if it is Pereira or Martinez I think both could be a good fit.
Would change are style of play for the better, but a couple of mates were at the Adelphi do last week and were told put as much cash as you can on Stubbs.
And I think thats who it will be, Subbs and Pip......

Good tip,Ian ! There`s a few in the Freshy `heavily invested` on the basis of goss with others close to the Club who live locally.
If it is Stubbsy,BK should get another Oscar for bullshitting the masses. But at least the guys I work with will be relieved at keeping their Singalong Hero.

PS My former hero has just been on spouting about Rio Ferdinand. Obviously well into his new job already!

Just read on another site Porto making an anouncement at 9 to night.
Would,nt know if it is true but whats the bets it is to say he is staying with Porto..

One or two at work suggesting money on offer not enough to attract Roberto away from Wigan. May well be that both he and Pereira have used Everton to get a good rise.
At least Stubbsy wont break the bank!

Its like an alternate universe now. In what version of reality does the chairmen of two football clubs-one of them a giant of English football-sit around waiting for the manager who just got his team relegated to 'decide his future plans' and see if he will either grace his current employer by remaining or deign to take the job at said giant of English football?

Er, Ray - it is up to EFC to officially approach Martinez. It's not for Martinez to resign and hope that BK will come knocking. He's just playing for time until he knows whether he's going to be offered the job or not. If he is, I have no doubt he'll accept it straight away. Whether BK will offer him the job is another matter.

Richard - read my post @ 913

Manager runs down his contract to suddenly find out he has a great new job to walk into and so leaves his club with no compensation. It emerges that sudden job offer might not be so sudden after all. Rumours abound that he might take the clubs brightest stars with him.

Have we just got rid of this man or are we about to hire him?

Are there any odds on Porto's new manager?

If BK has organised this move for VP does it partially vindicate his decision to let DM run his contract down?

Er Kev, Everton can't approach Martinez without permission from Whelan.. Thems the rules.

Unless however you want to 'tap up' Martinez but Nooo that would not go with BK he's a man of his word.

Chris - yes, I know that. I should have said "approach Wigan" instead of "approach Martinez". But my point remains. It is up to us to approach them - or, if you prefer, BK to approach DW. It is not up to Martinez to, so to speak, wave his knickers in the air shouting come and get me! People are talking as though Martinez should have come out and said "I gladly accept the EFC job" without it ever being offered to him.

I can hear it, Kevin. I have very acute hearing, like an owl.

Any fresh rumours? Tony J, where are you? I'm missing all your stats, facts and figures.

Whoever gets the job people will say it was all done and dusted months ago. ToffeeWeb always runs true to form. Great stuff. Better than the telly.
