Bad Boys Table  Points Method  System Explained Fair Play League

Everton accrued a record 79 yellow cards and 5 red cards – the worst in the Premiership
The disciplinary record for First Team players is shown below in the Bad Boys Table.
Players are ranked based on an arbitrary method of assigning points.
The new FA disciplinary system is also explained.

Disclaimer:  This is our best guess at the situation but please note: we could be wrong!

Notes:

  1. Table does not include cards received in the Pontins League (no information available), or in the Coca-Cola Cup (yellows for Bilic, Speed, and Oster) – the latter are now irrelevant.
  2. Card-free matches (full 90 mins, including Pontins and Friendlies) are counted only for players with less than 5 qualifying yellow cards but no red cards. (Pontins matches counted may not actually be card-free!)
  3. Table may not include cards picked up by new players (eg, Ward) at their former clubs.
  4. Impending suspensions are listed as (+3), etc.

THE TOFFEEWEB DISCIPLINARY POINTS CALCULATION

The method used here to calculate points in the table above works like this:
  • A Yellow Card is worth 2 points
  • A Double Yellow Card (automatic Red) is worth 5 points
  • A Red Card is worth 5 points
  • The credit for 5 full (90 mins) card-free games in succession is worth -1 point
  • A match missed through suspension is worth 6 points
Credits are set against yellow cards, so a player with 2 yellows and 1 credit effectively has only one yellow under the new FA card system. However, the ToffeeWeb points table will reflect the total number of yellows incurred, without adjustment for the credits.

THE NEW FA CARD SYSTEM - AN EXPLANATION

The Football Association's new disciplinary system introduced for the 1997-98 season (starting June 16, and therefore including pre-season friendlies) works like this (I think...):

  • A Yellow Card caution is no longer assigned any points for severity: a caution is a caution.
  • If a player with less than 5 Yellow Cards (and no Red Cards?) plays in five additional full "competitive" games (90 mins, without substitution) without receiving a Yellow Card, his last Yellow Card will be erased. And if he plays in another 5 full matches... ???
  • A player accumulating 5 Yellow Cards, will receive an automatic suspension.
  • The length of the suspension depends on when he receives the 5th Yellow Card:
    • On or before 30 November:– Suspension for 3 first team matches
    • On or before 22 February:– Suspension for 2 first team matches
    • On or before 12 April:– Suspension for 1 first team match.
  • Additional suspensions will follow after 8 Yellow Cards have been accumulated:
    • On or before 29 March:– Suspension for 2 first team matches.
    • On or before 12 April:– Suspension for 1 first team match.
  • Additional suspensions will follow after 11 Yellow Cards have been accumulated.
  • Cards received in the Premiership, FA Cup, Freindlies, and Reserve matches will be included in the accumulated totals; however, cards received in the Coca-Cola Cup and European cup competitions are dealt with using a separate system and will not be included.
  • The length of the suspension after a Red Card follows this system:
    • Violent conduct; spitting at an opponent:– 3 matches
    • Foul or aggressive language:– 2 matches
    • Professional foul; deliberate hand ball on the goal line:– 1 match
    • Double Yellow Card = Red Card:– 1 match
  • Players who are sent off for the 2nd time in a season will be suspended for 1 match in addition to the system above.
  • Players who are sent off for the 3rd time in a season will be suspended for 2 matches in addition to the system above, etc.
  • Suspensions start 14 days after the player receives the relevant card, and will be served for all matches, but the duration of suspension will be counted only for FA matches (Premier League; FA Cup).
  • Unfulfilled suspensions will be carried to the next season, if necessary.
