Everton Penalty Shoot-Outs

Senior Shoot-Outs Shoot-Out Stats Pre-season Shoot-outs

Everton's record in penalty shoot-outs is improving slightly.  During their history, Everton have taken part in 12 shoot-outs and have now won five in first class competitions.

First Ever European Shoot-Out

The first shoot-out was the infamous "Andy Rankin" game, in the second round of the 1970-71 European Cup.  With the aggregate tied at 2-2, the end of extra time saw Everton and Moenchengladbach enter the record books before a kick was taken, this being the first ever penalty shoot-out in a European Club competition, as Uefa only introduced the rule that season.

#1  Everton v Borussia Moenchengladbach - 4 November 1970
European Cup Second Round
First leg: Borussia Moenchengladbach 1 - 1 Everton
Second leg: Everton 1 - 1 Borussia Moenchengladbach (after extra time)

Everton won 4-3 on penalties:

  Everton Borussia Moenchengladbach
1 Joe Royle (saved) Sielhoff
2 Alan Ball Laumen (missed)
3 Johnny Morrisey Heynckes
4 Howard Kendall Koppel
5 Sandy Brown Muller (saved)

The Everton goalkeeper that night was Andy Rankin.

Everton's Longest Ever Shoot-Out

The majority of Everton's penalty shoot-outs have been run-of-the-mill affairs completed within the initially allotted 10 kicks. A meeting with Charlton Athletic in one of the myriad of cup competitions that arose during the European ban on English clubs the Full Members Cup, resulted in a total of 16 penalties taken on the night.  It was also one of the only times – peraps the only time – an Everton goalkeeper has scored a penalty in a first-class match when Neville Southall converted Everton's fourth penalty!

That tally was superceded in Janaury 2015 when the Toffees met West Ham United in an FA Cup Third Round replay, a few years after second and third replays were abandoned in favour of penalties to prevent further clogging of the fixture list. The match had finished 2-2, with Carlton Cole cancelling out Romelu Lukaku's strike which had put the visitors 2-1 ahead in extra time, with the two sides inseparable after 120 minutes.

Steven Naismith was the first to miss when Adrian stopped his spot kick at 1-1 and the Hammers were perfect and on their way to victory when Stewart Downing stepped up and just had to score but Joel Robles saved. Both sides found the net as the next eight penalties were taken until Robles himself stepped up but couldn't emulate Southall; the Spanish keeper hammered his effort off the crossbar and his opposite number, Adrian, clinched it with the 20th and decisive kick as West Ham won 9-8.

Mirallas: scored down the middle – 0-1
Noble: sends Robles the wrong way – 1-1
Naismith: straight at Adrián, saved – 1-1
Nolan: sends Robles the wrong way – 2-1
Lukaku: sends Adrián the wrong way – 2-2
Carroll: sends Robles the wrong way – 3-2
Baines: Adrián almost saves – 3-3
Cresswell: Down the middle – 4-3
Oviedo: Down the middle – 4-4
Downing: Robles saves low to his left! – 4-4
Barry: Smacks it home! – 4-5
Cole: sends Robles the wrong way – 5-5
Stones: only just! dreadful penalty... – 5-6
Valencia: sends Robles the wrong way – 6-6
Jagielka: slides it home nicely – 6-7
Amalfitano: sends Robles the wrong way – 7-7
Coleman: sends Adrián the wrong way – 7-8
Jenkinson: smacks into the roof of the net – 8-8
Robles: Smacks the bar with ridiculous power - 8-8
Adrián: sends Robles the wrong way – 9-8

 Everton's First League Cup Shoot-Out

The number of shoot-outs since then has increased significantly since their introduction at the end of the replay in the FA Cup and at the end of the first match in the League Cup.

Incidentally, as a consequence, the second replay at Goodison Park against Liverpool on 27 February 1991, following the 4-4 draw, will go down in history as the last ever second replay in the FA Cup, with Dave Watson scoring the last ever goal in an FA Cup Second Replay, with his winner in the subsequent 1-0 victory.
