FA PREMIER YOUTH ACADEMY — League Setup
(Not yet updated) The FA Premier Youth Academy Under-19s League set-up has four regional groups of 10 teams each:
Group A (NW) Group B (NE) Group C (SE) Group D (SW) Blackburn Rvrs Barnsley Aston Villa Bristol City Bolton Wndrs Derby County Arsenal Chelsea Crewe Alexandra Huddersfield T Birmingham C Crystal Pal Everton Leeds United Charlton Ath Fulham Liverpool Leicester C Coventry City QPR Manchester Utd Middlesbrough Ipswich Town Reading Manchester City Newcastle Utd Millwall Southampton Stoke City Notts Forest Norwich Tottenham H Wolverhampton W Sheffield Wed Peterborough West Ham Utd Wrexham Sunderland Watford Wimbledon
The season started with some inter-group matches against teams from the farthest (geographically) regional groups. For Everton, that meant a game with a team in Groups C, and D. Everton then played three teams from the closest Group A.
For the main part of the season, Everton played each of the other teams in the local Group A, both home and away. They finished up playing each of the remaining teams in Group B just once, giving 28 matches in all. By finishing top of their regional Group table, Everton progressed direct to the semi-final of the national playoffs, where they lost to Nottingham Forest.

Everton: Cole; Colbeck, Crowder, Schumacher, R Southern; Garside (38' Booth), B Moogan, Beck, Hopkins (77' Potter); Brown, Carney Subs not used: Potter, Booth. Scorers: None.
Steve Milne: This is the first real chance I have had to see the Under-19s in action this season. Losing the likes of Rooney (with the first team) & Symes (with the reserves) from the front two is asking a lot from the others to fill the gap scoring wise. Hopkins and Brown tried to do just that. We had our chances to win the game: both came close in the first half. Brown having the better chances; the best effort a header, the cross coming in from the left, just slipping past the post.
A worry just before half time: Garside went off on a stretcher.
The second half saw us again working hard, Brown again finding the target. Beck hit the top of the bar from 20 yards out, then Bolton started to attack. In the last 15 mins, they hit the post twice, mounted attack after attack, and just before the end they stole a goal: Tubbs from close range, the cross in from the left, only half cleared, ball back into the box, a scrambled effort.
Huddersfield Town 0 - 2 Everton
Everton: Cole, Colbeck, Crowder, Schumacher, R Southern, Carney, Brown, B Moogan, Symes, Barry, Martland. Subs: Hopkins, Hughes. Scorers: Brown, Hopkins.

Everton 1 - 1 Middlesbrough
Everton: Cole, Colbeck, Crowder, Schumacher, R Southern, Carney, Brown, B Moogan (61' Lynch), Barry (74' J Jones), Hopkins (61' Booth), Martland. Subs not used: Lake, Gerrard. Scorers: Martland (3').
Everton's Under-19s relinquished a goal lead at home to Middlesbrough, settling for a point in the end. After dominating the first half of the game, they found themselves coming under increasing pressure from the visitors as the second half progressed. Colin Harvey fielded a starting line-up shorn of the services of regulars Craig Garside, Alan Moogan, Michael Symes and Franklyn Beck, but Damon Martland's first goal of the season after just five minutes of the game gave the Blues a dream start.
Middlesbrough were second best in the opening 45 minutes but were value for their equalising goal on the hour as they came to terms with the game much more after the interval. Everton showed great character to keep the scores level as Boro dominated towards the final whistle but the Blues were close to snatching maximum reward in the closing minutes as Gavin Lynch's header struck the visitors woodwork with their keeper well beaten.
Sheffield Wednesday 0 - 4 Everton
Everton: Cole, Potter, Crowder, Schmacher, Southern, Carney, Brown, B Moogan, Barry, Hopkins, Martland. Subs: Flood, Booth, Hughes. Scorers: Hopkins, Brown, Martland, B Moogan.
Everton 1 - 0 Wolverhampton Wanderers
Everton: Cole, Potter, Crowder, Schumacher, R Southern, A Moogan, Carney, B Moogan, Barry, Hopkins (84' Booth), Martland (36' Colbeck). Subs not used: Beck. Scorers: Southern.
Steve Milne: Not a lot to say really; a lot of huffing and puffing, no real action. We only had one real chance just be for the end of the half: Alan Moogan well in side the area, the cross in from the right the ball fell kindly for him, a snap shot just past the right post.
Half time: Everton 0 - 0 Wolves
The second half was the David Carney show, he could have had a hat-trick. He had a chance on 65 mins: unmarked in the area, his shot was saved spectacularly by the keeper diving to his right. Then the Wolves keeper was again the saviour with Carney's shot this time from outside the area just over the bar with his fingertips. The 3rd effort was another close-range shot that just slipped past the post.
The winner came via a well-taken corner, Barry sending in the ball to Robert Southern's head; with power, he put it in the back of the net. On the balance of play, a well-deserved lead, which turned out to be a well deserved win.
Liverpool 4 - 2 Everton
Everton: Cole, Potter, Crowder, Schumacher, R Southern, A Moogan, Beck, B Moogan, Barry, Garside, Carney. Subs: Hopkins, Booth, Martland. Scorers: Hopkins (56'), Booth (60').
Steve Milne: A visit to the dark side this morning, with both U-17s & U-19s playing at the same time; I decided to have a look at our Under 19s again. We had our backs to the wall for most of the game; the score line of 4-2 tells the story.
1-0 down at half time, this could have been more. Garside cleared the ball off the line, Flynn hit the bar with a long range shot. From the Blues side we had just one real chance: this came from A Moogan with a header from inside the box that went just go wide of the upright.
Liverpool's goal came after Everton just could not clear the ball away from inside the 18-yard box, even after 3 or 4 attempts. The ball finally fell to Flynn who blasted the ball from the edge of the area with Cole given no chance.
Half time: Liverpool 1 - 0 Everton
The second half was only 60 seconds old when we found ourselves 2-0 down. Raven hit a right-footed shot across the front of Cole from the right corner of the box, the ball slipping in at the bottom corner. On 56 mins sub Hopkins clawed a goal back for a hard-working Everton side. He found himself with the ball on the edge of the area, and saw his chance to fire in past the diving Dittmer.
Four mins later we had the deserved equaliser, another of our substitutes Booth the scorer. Carney with the corner ball, in to the near post, flicked on to the 6-yard area, an almighty scramble ensued and Booth was in the right place at the right time: 2-2. But within a minute we are 3-2 down: a cross in from the left, at the back post and Smyth with the header.
With 10 mins to go, ex-Everton player Darren Potter scored their fourth with another long range effort from the edge of the box; again our keeper had no chance.

Steve Milne: A poor game; not that many chances to fill the notebook. Our best chance of the first half came on 20 mins from Alan Moogan with a great free kick, from 30/35 yards out, with power hit the top of the post; City's keeper would have had no chance. The next noteworthy effort came on 42 mins when Dave Carney (who had a run out with the reserves mid-week) had a good deep run from midfield, held off a defender or two, and made a bit of space before crossing the ball to the back post but Hopkins just could not direct his header.
Half time: Everton 0 - 0 Manchester City
Within 8 mins of the restart, City started to take control of the game. 30 yards out, the Everton defence stood off Elliott gave him time & space to shoot into the bottom left-hand corner. On 74 mins Elliott again the scorer to put the game beyond the Blues: a long ball from the back, from the right side of the area, Elliott just stuck his boot out, the ball just rolled towards the goal, Alex Cole slipped, the ball crossed the line: 0-2 down.
We had just one real attempt at goal on 66 mins: Hopkins with another header just wide of the upright.
Birmingham City 1 - 1 Everton

Everton 0 - 1 Birmingham City
Everton: Turner, Potter, Crowder, Gerrard, Southern, B Moogan (73' Carney), Beck, Gallagher (71' Hopkins), Symes, A Moogan (45' Schumacher), Brown. Subs not used: Cole. Scorers: None.
Steve Milne: Not a morning to be standing at the training ground; windy, that horrible rain that soaks you, and not a lot of good football to boot.
We lost 1-0 today. A fair result would have been a draw; both sides somewhat lacking in the shots on target department. Birmingham's goal came via a Shumacher mistake: he gave the ball away with a poor pass, Birmingham broke with a 3 on 2, Barrowman was the spare man from 4 yards out and side-footed the ball past Everton's new young keeper Iain Turner (who had not had a lot to do for the whole 90' bar pick the ball out of the net the one time)
Symes got a yellow card for a clumsy tackle just before the end of the game (frustration with lack of good service to him got the better of him, I think!).
Everton 5 - 1 Sheffield United
Wolverhampton Wanderers 2 - 3 Everton
Everton 2 - 0 Derby County
Everton: Turner, Potter, Crowder, Garside, Gerrard, Carney, Barry, Beck, Lynch, Hopkins, J Jones. Subs not used: N/A. Scorers: Lynch (15'), Carney (pen:78')
Steve Milne: With a few postponed Under-19 fixtures still to fit in before the end of the season, a couple of midweek afternoon kick offs have been added. Today the Under-19's (who where mostly made up of the Under-17's) beat Derby 2-0, a goal in each half.
1 - 0 15' Lynch. A well-taken header unmarked in the box, placed into the bottom right of the goal, Hopkins the provider of the ball, a good pin point cross.
2 - 0 78' Carney. Via a Penalty, coolly sent the keeper the wrong way, put the ball in the bottom left hand corner.
Young Turner, (who by the way looks better each time I see him in action) had nothing to do. Derby County hit the bar in the first half just over the half hour mark, the only attack worthy of a note.
Everton 1 - 0 Liverpool
Everton: Turner, Potter, Wright, Garside, Gerrard, J Jones, Booth (M Jones), B Moogan, Lynch (Hughes), Hopkins, Barry. Subs not used: Thorbinson, Gallagher. Scorers: Barry (40')
Steve Milne: With a young side playing for the reserves last night, the Under-19s were made up of the Under-17s — we even have a couple of schoolboys on the bench.
For the first 45 mins, nether side could make any inroads. The only goal of the game came via a mistake on 40 mins when Liverpool gave the ball away in midfield. Everton took full advantage: from just inside the area, Barry took a chance shot, the ball flew into the bottom left-hand side of the goal.
In the second half the Everton youngsters had the upper hand, Liverpool becoming more and more frustrated, (a few fouls, a few moans to the referee; typical crap from the red pestilence...)
Everton wanted the win more than they did.
Manchester United 3 - 2 Everton
Manchester City 1 - 0 Everton
Everton: Turner, Potter, Crowder, Garside, Fox, Carney, Booth (76' M Jones), J Jones (81' Thorbinson), Lynch (75' Flood), Hopkins, Barry. Subs not used: Thorbinson B Moogan, A Gerrard. Scorers: Scorers.
Another Academy game just a day after the reserve team game at Sunderland, as most of the Under-19s played in it; another very young side took on Man City at Platt Lane. It took just 20 seconds for the first attack, Hopkins from the edge of the area just off target.
Crewe Alexandra 0 - 2 Everton
Everton: Team. Subs not used: Names. Scorers: Hopkins, Lynch.
