 FA PREMIER YOUTH ACADEMY LEAGUE

The FA Premier Youth Academy Under-17s League set-up has four regional groups of 10 teams each:

Group A (NW) Group B (NE) Group C (SE) Group D (SW)
Blackburn Rvrs Derby County Aston Villa Bristol City
  Bolton Wndrs Huddersfield Arsenal Chelsea
Crewe Alexandra Leeds United Birmingham C Crystal Pal
Everton Leicester C Charlton Ath Fulham
  Liverpool Middlesbrough Coventry City QPR
Manchester Utd Newcastle Utd Ipswich Town Reading
Manchester City Notts Forest Millwall Southampton
Stoke City Sheffield Wed Norwich Tottenham H
Wolverhampton W Sunderland Peterborough West Ham Utd
  Wrexham Sheffield Utd Watford Wimbledon

The season started with some inter-group matches against teams from the farthest (geographically) regional groups.  For Everton, that meant a game with a team each from Groups C and D.  Everton then played three teams from the closest Group A.

For the main part of the season, Everton played each of the other teams in the local Group A, both home and away.  They finished up playing each of the other teams in Group A again, giving 28 matches in all.

  • 55' 2-0 Andrew Fowler  Move of the game, it deserved a goal, a quick ball from the keeper, down the right, some great passing, the ball ended up on the right wing, Hopkins again the provider, Fowler hit it, the keeper half saved it, only to see Fowler hit it again, making no mistake second time around.

Match Highlights from Steve Milne:

  • 10' 0-1 Johnson  Ball in from the midfield, Johnson took the ball in the center of the D, turned, made a bit of space, shot right footed, top right corner of the goal.
  • 26' 0-2 Fowler  Cross in from the left, driven in past the defenders, 6 yards out unmarked, Fowler just guided the ball past the keeper.
  • 43' 0-3 Hopkins The Everton midfield had control of the midfield, passing the ball with ease, this time the ball came into the path of Hopkins, right side of the area, beat the defender to the ball, as the keeper came out, he slid the ball past him.

Half time: Derby County 0 - 3 Everton

  • 58' Wright - yellow card
  • 90' A consolation goal for Derby came on the final kick of the game, a shot from 25 yards into the top right corner of the Everton goal; Lake had no chance.

 Everton 3 - 2 Middlesbrough

U-17 League Match No 6
Saturday 27 September 2003

Netherton

Everton:  Lake, Wynne, Boyle, Wright, Hughes, Wilson, Seargeant, Harris, Hopkins, Fowler (74' Phelan), Johnson (82' Kearney).
Subs not used: Vaughan, Gallagher, Molyneux.  Scorers: Wilson, Fowler, Seargeant.

Another chance to see the kids in action today, good game it was as well.

  • 21' 1-0 Wilson  Fresh from his run out with the reserves, Laurence Wilson put the blues ahead, a corner fired in with pace, the Middlesbrough defence just could not clear the ball away, Wilson blasted the ball though a pile of players from 10 yards out.
  • 51' 2-0 Fowler  Hopkins with a run deep from midfield, took on the left back, beat him shot first time, hit the inside if the post, on the follow up Andrew Fowler hit the ball with a snap-shot from 3 yards out.
  • 57' 2-1 Craddock  Against the run of play, in fact I think it was the only attack of the game so far for Middlesbrough, a cross in from the right, Craddock got in between the two Everton defenders to head home.
  • 65' 2-2 Kennedy  A corner hit in with power, Kennedy unmarked 6 yards out with the header.
  • 77' 3-2 Seargeant  The winner, a cross in from the left, Scotty Phelan in the box with the flick header on to Seargeant who just picked his spot, right footed — could not fail to score.

 Everton 2 - 1 Nottingham Forest

U-17 League Match No 8
Saturday 11 October 2003

Everton:  Gallagher; Wynne, Wright, Kearney, Hughes; Wilson, Sergeant, Harris; Hopkins, Fowler (60' Phelan), Johnson (60' Boyce).
Subs not used: Irving, Holt.  Scorers: Hughes (66'), Wright (70')

Steve Milne: An evenly matched game this morning, both sides not having that many real chances on goal. We went a goal down on 25\mins when Litchfield put the visitors in front, a cross in from the left, only half cleared, put back in again from the left, this time Litchfield beat the defenders to the ball.  Alan Kearney saved the day on the half hour mark, cleared the ball off the line.

Half time: Everton 0 - 1 Nottingham Forest

Gary Abblet made a couple of changes on the hour mark and within a couple a minutes it paid off:

  • 66' 1-1 Hughes  Corner in from the left hit into the six yard area, Mark Hughes out jumped all the Forest players to head home.
  • 70' 2-1 Wright  By this time we had a lot of the ball, always looking for the winner.  It came when Laurence Wilson took the ball in from the right midfield, hit a cross shot, it hit the base of the post, the ball bounced around, finally Shaun Wright got on the end of the ball and scored the match-winning goal — much to the delight of all his team mates, and the 100 or so spectators.

 Leeds United 0 - 1 Everton

U-17 League Match No 9
Saturday 18 October 2003

Leeds

Everton:  McCall; Wynne, Boyle, Kearney, Hughes; Wilson, Seargeant, Harris; Hopkins, Johnson, Morrison.
Subs: Fowler, Anichebe, Holt, Vaughan.  Scorers: Vaughan (75').

icLiverpool: Everton under-17s made it eight wins from nine matches with a 1-0 victory at Leeds to consolidate their position at the top of the Group A table.  Substitute James Vaughan grabbed his first goal of the season 15 minutes from time as Gary Ablett's side completed an early Academy League double of the Yorkshire side.  Christian Seargeant fed Vaughan just inside the box and, after turning his marker, he lifted it over the advancing keeper.

Coach Gary Ablett said: "It was a good workmanlike 1-0 win. It could have been better, but I think there was only ever going to be one team who was going to win and that was us.  But we could have made it easier for ourselves by scoring a couple more.  We were missing our goalkeeper Craig Gallagher, who is a very important player for us.  He was out with a bad hamstring and Sean Wright was ill."

 Manchester United 1 - 4 Everton

U-17 League Match No 14
Saturday 22 November 2003

Manchester

Everton:  Gallagher; Wynne, Hughes, Kearney, Wright; Seargeant, Wilson, Harris, Boyle; Hopkins, Phelan (80' Vaughan).
Subs not used: Fowler, Jamie Jones, Johnson, Irving.  Scorers: Hughes (40'), Seargeant (51', 78'), Hopkins (90').

Centre-back Hughes opened the scoring five minutes before half-time for his third goal of the season.  United levelled from the penalty spot just before the break.  But there was no stopping the young Blues in the second half.  Christian Seargeant takes the credit for the second after his free-kick went in off a United defender six minutes after half-time.  But there was no dispute about the scorer of the third as Seargeant made it 3-1 on 78 minutes.  And 16-year-old Hopkins wrapped things up in the final minute with his third goal this season.

EVERTON under-17s moved to within one point of FA Premier Academy League leaders Manchester United with a five-star performance against their neighbours City.  It was the perfect tonic after the Blues crashed out of the FA Youth Cup in midweek at Coventry City.

Full-back Stephen Wynne opened the scoring, volleying home from the edge of the box when a corner was cleared straight to him after half-an-hour.  And although the Blues were always on top it wasn't until the second half that they made their superiority tell.  Striker Paul Hopkins hit two goals in ten minutes to take his tally for the season to five.

Further strikes late on from Boyle, who slid in at the far post and substitute James Vaughan, who smashed home after a good turn made sure the Blues ran out emphatic winners.

Steve Milne: With just one game left of the normal season, a victory tonight would make us league winners. In a poor first half, neither side could carve any chances ; I think it was down to nerves as a lot was riding on the game.

Right from the restart we looked the better side, and within a couple of minutes we scored.

  • 48' 1-0 Christian Seargeant took the ball on the left, cut in made space, let fly from the corner of the area, the ball hit the inside of the post and in.
  • 72' 2-0 Andrew Fowler.  Another well-taken goal, although it was a little bit lucky.  The Crewe defender made a mistake on the edge of the area, Fowler grabbed his chance, shot first time into the bottom left hand corner.
  • 84' 3-0 Paul Hopkins.  This time the attack came down the right wing, Hopkins out-paced the left back, drilled the ball low and hard across the front of goal, ending up in the bottom left hand corner. t

We are the Champions.............. of Group A!  Next: the playoffs!!!
