 FA PREMIER YOUTH ACADEMY LEAGUE

Under Construction The FA Premier Youth Academy has been completely restructured this season with the Under-19 and Under-17 teams from the previous 6 seasons being consolidated to form one Youth League at Under-18 level.  There will be a parallel set of friendly games playing the same fixtures at Under-16 level, but they will not count towards any league table

The new set-up for the FA Premier Youth Academy has four or five regional groups of 10 teams each:

Group C (NW) Group B (NE) Group A (SE) Group D (SW) Group E
Blackburn Rvrs Derby County Aston Villa Bristol City Cardiff City
Crewe Alexandra Leeds United Birmingham C Crystal Pal Huddersfield
Everton Leicester C Charlton Ath Fulham Arsenal
Liverpool Middlesbrough Coventry City QPR Chelsea
Manchester Utd Newcastle Utd Ipswich Town Reading Bolton Wndrs
Manchester City Notts Forest Millwall Southampton Barnsley
Sheffield Wed Wrexham Norwich Tottenham H
Stoke City Sunderland Peterborough West Ham Utd
Wolverhampton W Sheffield Utd Watford Wimbledon

The season starts with some inter-group matches against teams from the farthest (geographically) regional groups.  For Everton, that meant a game with a team each from Groups C and D.  Everton then played three teams from the closest Group A.

For the main part of the season, Everton play each of the other teams in the local Group A, both home and away.  They finish up playing each of the other teams in Group A again, giving 28 matches in all.

  UNDER-18 YOUTH ACADEMY LEAGUE — 2004-05

The section below contains available team details and scorers for Everton U-18 matches, and brief match reports, if available.

 Cardiff City 0 - 1 Everton

U-18 League Match No 1
Saturday 21 August 2004

Cardiff

Everton:  Lake; S Wright, Hughes, Fox, Boyle; Wynne, Seargeant, Phelan, Vidarsson (75' Martland); Hopkins, Anichebe.
Subs not used: Gallagher, Kearney, Vaughan, Holt.  Scorers: Hopkins (30').

ENGLAND youth international striker Paul Hopkins scored the only goal of the match as Everton under-18s secured victory in their opening match of the new FA Premier Academy League season at Cardiff City.  The Walton youngster struck after 30 minutes and in a hard-fought match it proved enough to secure the points.  Cardiff, who received Academy status earlier in the year after five years of trying, started their first fixture in the League in determined fashion but Everton eventually began to exert themselves on the match and on the half-hour mark they opened the scoring.

From an excellent right-wing cross from Stephen Wynne, Hopkins, who has been impressing in Andy Holden's reserve team, scored with a superb diving header.  The 17-year-old striker almost doubled Everton's advantage in the second half, but his 25-yard effort came back off the bar.  Fellow forward Victor Anichebe, a 16-year-old from Crosby, also had three opportunities to make the game safe, but sadly he spurned them.

Steve Milne:  With no first team game today, no DIY/shopping/grass-cutting to be done, why not take a trip up north to see the 18's play.  Newcastle's academy looked like a building site, then I relised that Sky One are here to build a set for the forthcoming reality football show "The Match".  1st half:

  • 16' Hopkins looks bright, has a shot off target.
  • 18' Hopkins again looking to find the goal, another shot well of target.
  • 31' 1-0  Hopkins  Ball in from midfield, left side of goal, in plenty of space, runs into the box, right footed shot, the Newcastle keeper had no chance.

Half time: Newcastle United 0 - 1 Everton

  • 60' 1-1  Newcastle's striker hits a free kick though the Everton wall, and into the bottom right hand corner.
  • 66' 1-2  Hopkins  This time a set piece, corner from the right, aiming for the back of the six-yard area, Hopkins on the half volley unmarked, with power, good goal.

 Manchester United 2 - 2 Everton

U-18 League Match No 8
Saturday 9 October 2004

Carrington, Manchester

Everton:  Lake; Wynne, S Wright, Boyle, Hughes; Harris, Seargeant, Phelan; Hopkins, Anichebe, Wilson.
Subs not used: Gallagher, Fowler, Holt, Vidarsson, Martland.  Scorers: Wilson (23'), Hopkins (73').

Steve Milne:  Another free Saturday, what better than lets nip up the M62 and have a look at the 18's; David Moyes was here to have a look as well.

  • 23' 0-1  Laurence Wilson  Seargeant great cross from the right, Wilson makes a run into the box, out jumps the Man Utd defenders, makes no mistake.
  • 49' Man Utd's Fraizer Campbell goes looking for a penalty, referee gives it.
  • 49' Takes the penalty himself, hits it hard and to Sean Lake's right, Lake at full stretch tips the ball on to the post, out and cleared for a corner.
  • 50' 1-1  Fraizer Campbell from the corner Hughes & Boyle both out jumped on the penalty spot, Campbell header down and low, bottom right hand corner.
  • 62' Patrick Boyle - Yellow card.
  • 73' Victor Anichebe brought down, clear penalty
  • 73' 1-2 Paul Hopkins  Right footed drilled hard and low, right corner.
  • 78' 2-2 Fraizer Campbell  A bit of a scramble in the area, Everton just could not get a foot on the ball to clear it away, from inside the six-yard box, Campbell drove home.
  • 79' Laurence Wilson - Yellow card

Not a bad game; nice training ground (not a portakabin in sight).

Saturday 5 March 2005

Netherton

Everton:  Gallagher; Holt, Irving, Davidsen, S Wright; Harris, Seargeant, Phelan; Vaughan, Molyneux, Fowler.
Subs not used: N/A.  Scorers: None.

A much-changed Everton line-up, which saw the welcome return of midfielders James Harris and Christian Seargeant after more than six weeks out injured, had to play into the teeth of a fierce wind.  But they didn't cope with it and found themselves 3-0 down at the break.

Everton tried to use the wind to their advantage after half-time and had numerous chances early on from Seargeant, Harris, James Vaughan and Scott Phelan.  But United weathered the visitors' storm and held on.

 Blackburn Rovers 2 - 3 Everton

U-18 League Match No 21
Saturday 19 March 2005

Blackburn

Everton:  Gallagher; Wynne, Boyle, Hughes, Wilson; Harris, Seargeant, Phelan, Kearney; Hopkins (Vaughan 60), Anichebe (Fowler 60).
Subs not used:  Lake, Vidarsson.  Scorers: Anichebe, Hughes Vaughan.

Forward Victor Anichebe gave Everton the lead after 25 minutes when he flicked the ball past the keeper.  But Blackburn hit back almost immediately after a poorly defended corner.  Mark Hughes put Everton back in front after he flicked Christian Seargeant's free-kick in at the near post for his first Academy League goal of the season.

Then on the hour a double substitution proved profitable.  Paul Hopkins and Victor Anichebe made way for Andy Fowler and Vaughan and the latter made it 3-1.  The Birmingham-born forward beat three men before coolly finishing past the Rovers keeper.

 Everton 3 - 1 Bolton Wanderers

U-18 League Match No 22
Saturday 26 March 2005

Netherton

Everton:  Lake; Wynne (Davidsen 80), Holt, Hughes, S Wright; Harris (Morrison 55), Seargeant, Vidarsson, Kearney; Hopkins (Irving 70), Fowler.
Subs not used:  Gallagher, Anichebe.  Scorers: Hopkins, Vidarsson 2.

Top scorer Paul Hopkins gave Everton the lead with his 14th Academy League goal and 19th in all for the season. He applied the finishing touch after excellent work between Stephen Wynne and Christian Seargeant on the right.

A bizarre goal let Bolton back in as Everton keeper Sean Lake slipped and fell as he was about to clear. But Everton hit back immediately as Icelandic forward Vidarsson poached the first of his two goals. The first came after Mark Hughes headed a corner down and Vidarsson stole in to head home.  On the hour mark Wynne and Seargeant combined superbly again and Vidarsson headed home from the former's cross.

 Liverpool 2 - 1 Everton

U-18 League Match No 23
Thursday 31 March 2005

Kirkby Academy

Everton:  Gallagher; Irving, Holt, Hughes, S Wright; Phelan, Seargeant, Fowler (Anichebe 60), Kearney (Harris 60); Hopkins (Kissock 60), Vaughan.
Subs not used:  Lake.  Scorers: Hitchen (og).

Liverpool got the all-important winning goal to finally claim their first Academy League Group C match since October 9.  Liverpool took the lead midway through the first half when with a well-timed run midfielder Paul Barratt latched on to a throughball from Conal Platt and slipped the ball past Everton keeper Craig Gallagher.

But Everton side hit back 10 minutes before half-time when thanks chiefly to striker James Vaughan, who was back in the team after his successful first stint with England Under-17s.  The Birmingham-born frontman put great pressure on Adam Hitchen when a cross came into the box that the Liverpool defender put through his own net.

Liverpool took the lead on 56 minutes when Jay Spearing headed keeper Gallagher's clearance back beyond the Everton defence for Frayne to go through and score in similar style to Barratt's opener.  Everton, who had hit a post earlier in the match, pressed for an equaliser but a resolute Liverpool held out for victory.

 Sheffield United 1 - 1 Everton

U-18 League Match No 24
Saturday 2 April 2005

Netherton

Everton:  Lake; Irving, Holt, Kearney, Molyneux; Morrison, Seargeant, Phelan, Martland (Kissock 45); Dunn (Connors 45), Fowler.
Subs not used:  Gallagher, Davidsen.  Scorers: Fowler.

A young Everton side, featuring five schoolboys, had to settle for a point at Sheffield United.  Everton had to weather some early pressure and Sean Lake made one good save.  But Everton took the lead after James Dunn pressurised a United defender and Andrew Fowler pounced on the loose ball to score his fourth of the season.  The lead didn't last long as Sheffield took advantage of their greater physical threat and scored after a corner.

In the second half chances fell to Steven Connors, Scott Phelan, Fowler and Steve Morrison, but they couldn't take them and in the end Everton were happy to take a share of the points.

 Everton 2 - 1 Nottingham Forest

U-18 League Match No 25
Saturday 9 April 2005

[Played in Nottingham]

Everton:  Lake; Irving, Holt, Boyle, Molyneux; Morrison (Seargeant 30), Phelan, Kearney, Martland (Wilson 80); Anichebe, Kissock (Fowler 60).
Subs not used:  Clancy, Harris.  Scorers: Molyneux, Fowler.

The match was due to be played at Netherton, but with the Grand National at nearby Aintree, Everton decided to switch the fixture to Nottingham.  Everton took the lead after 15 minutes. Damon Martland did well on the left and his run and cross ended with Lee Molyneux arriving late on the overlap from left-back to smash home into the top corner.  Forest equalised five minutes later: a long ball into the box caused a scramble and, despite Everton clearing twice, Forest forced the ball in.  But, with the wind at their backs in the second half, Everton grabbed the winner after substitutes Christian Seargeant and Andrew Fowler linked up well, the latter scoring his fifth goal of the season.

 Everton 1 - 0 Sunderland

U-18 League Match No 26
Saturday 16 April 2005

Netherton

Everton:  Lake; Wynne, Holt, Hughes, Boyle; Morrison (Molyneux 65), Phelan, Kearney, Kissock; Hopkins, Fowler (Irving 65).
Subs not used: Gallagher, Davidsen, Densemore.  Scorers: Boyle.

PATRICK BOYLE'S goal 20 minutes from time was enough to give Everton under-18s victory over Sunderland at Netherton on Saturday, helping them move into third place ahead of Manchester City in the FA Premier Academy League Group C table. With so many of the squad playing regular reserve football, several schoolboy players  like John-Paul Kissock, Steven Morrison, John Irving and Lee Molyneux had the chance to shine again.

In a match of few chances, Everton sealed the points on 70 minutes. Mark Hughes's long clearance out of the defence was collected by top scorer Paul Hopkins.  The striker set up Boyle, who ran from deep in his own half, to stroke home the winner. Not long after Everton could have doubled their lead but Hopkins missed from six yards after Molyneux's left-wing cross.

 Barnsley 0 - 2 Everton

U-18 League Match No 27
Saturday 23 April 2005

Barnsley

Everton:  Lake; Wright, Holt, Hughes, Boyle; Vidarsson, Phelan, Kearney (Harris 45), Seargeant; Hopkins (Anichebe 80), Fowler (Kissock 55).
Subs not used: Gallagher.  Scorers: Kissock, Anichebe.

SCHOOLBOY striker John-Paul Kissock's first goal for Everton under-18s and fellow substitute Victor Anichebe's late strike have virtually assured them of finishing third in the FA Premier Academy League Group C table. The two forwards scored after coming off the bench to give Everton all three points.

Kissock replaced Andy Fowler after 55 minutes and within a quarter of an hour he had opened the scoring in a previously drab match.  Kissock scored his first goal for the U18s after Scott Phelan and Bjarni Vidarsson linked up and the Icelandic midfielder pulled the ball back for him.  Anichebe came on with 10 minutes left and doubled the score after firing home from the edge of the box.

A late own goal gave Everton Under-18s the point at Crewe Alexandra which secured third place in the FA Premier Academy League Group C.  Everton dominated the early exchanges and Paul Hopkins, twice, and Alan Kearney had efforts saved.  But against the run of play Crewe took the lead from the penalty spot after a foul by defender Matthew Holt.

Everton had a great chance to level themselves from the spot, but top scorer Hopkins put his effort high over the bar two minutes into the second half.  Everton continued to press and after a triple substitution they drew level.  Christian Seargeant's excellent cross into the box forced a Crewe defender to put the ball into his own goal as he attempted to clear.

 Everton 4 - 2 Shanghai XI

U-18 Friendly Match
Thursday 14 October 2004

Netherton

Everton:  Lake; Wright, Boyle, Davidsen, Holt; Kearney (64' Potter), Fowler (83' Vaughan), Vidarsson (61' Trialist); Anichebe, Vaughan (71' Trialist), Martland.
Subs not used: N/A.  Scorers: Vaughan (4', 25', 39'), Vidarsson (60').

Steve Milne:  With a blank weekend for the U18 coming up and a team from Shanghai in the area, Everton's Academy today arranged a quick friendly. It was a like a league of nations that included, Mr Hiroshi Yamauch who happens to be a Japanese Referee in the J League (he was doing some studying at one of our local universities) add into the mix three Chinese trialists for Everton (from the same area as Li Tie) and Everton's newest U-18 signing from the Faroe Islands, Johann Davidsen.  The best bits:

  • 4' 1-0  James Vaughan  Martland from the right, good deep cross into the 6-yd box.  Vaughan sliding in with the defender, gets his foot to stab home an early goal.
  • 6' Martland has a shot that hits the base of the post, runs into the 18-yd box, out pacing Shanghai's right back.  Used his strength well.
  • 25' 2-0  James Vaughan  A poor back pass from the central defender lets Vaughan in.  10 yards out, he calmly puts the ball to the keeper's right-hand corner of the goal.
  • 28' Martland and Fowler together combined for a short corner.  The cross is deep into the back of the 6-yd box and Boyle on the half volley lifts the ball over the bar.
  • 31' 2-1 Chinese attacker beat the Everton offside trap as Sean Lake came out, and neatly lobbed the ball into the empty net.
  • 39' 3-1  James Vaughan  Martland and Fowler once again with the short corner routine, this time the ball into the 6-yd box, Vaughan used his height and strength to head home Everton's third for a quick hat-trick.

Half time: Everton 3 - 1 Shanghai

  • 60' 4-1  Bjarni Thor Vidarsson  This time it came via a right-handed cross from midfield . The Icelandic kid used his height advantage to good effect from 6 yards out.
  • 61' Off Vidarsson On Everton's number 14 Chinese Trialist
  • 64' Off Kearney On Potter
  • 71; Off Vaughan On Everton's number 15 Chinese Trialist
  • 83' Off Fowler, On the return of James Vaughan
  • 86' 4-2  Shanghai do a Wimbledon.   Route One long ball.  Their strikers out pacing our two central defenders, from inside the box, hit a low hard shot across the front of the Everton goal into the right hand corner.

I did ask when is the return leg... I could do with a holiday!!!
