Everton Reserves' season in the FA Reserves Premier League (Northern Section)
FA PREMIER RESERVE LEAGUE (Northern Section)
The Premier League has announced that from this season only teams in the Premiership will be eligible to play in the FA Premiership Reserve League (FAPRL). The make-up of the reserve league for the 2006-07 season is therefore a little different from previous seasons in that its 20 teams are the second-string line-ups of all those clubs playing in the Premier League. In previous seasons, teams that were playing in the reserve league could carry on playing even if their first team were relegated from the Premiership.
However, the 20 teams will be split into two leagues � North and South, with only 18 games scheduled on the fixture list as a result. Some of the remaining clubs in the FAPRL have expressed disappointment at the reduced number of games (there are 10 teams in each division, as opposed to 15 last season) and have said they want to bolster their fixture list by playing friendlies in-between league games.

YOUNG striker James Vaughan returned after a year-long knee injury problem to score in the opening game of the Reserve season. Vaughan showed no signs of his lengthy lay-off and took his goal well, capitalising on a mistake by Newcastle keeper Tim Kroll, who spilled Bjarni Vidarsson's shot, to pounce. Everton looked to be in control of the game until the 34th minute when Chris Shanks equalised, drilling in a low shot past John Ruddy.
Vaughan started the second half but was replaced after 63 minutes by summer signing Scot Spencer. Newcastle took the lead in the 73rd minute. Vidarsson only half cleared Finnigan's shot and Kris Gate followed up with a drive past Ruddy. The Blues salvaged a point with just seven minutes to go following a corner. A m�l�e ensued which resulted in the referee pointing to the spot. Mark Hughes stepped up to convert the kick and earn Everton their first point of the new campaign.

Former Everton keeper Paul Gerrard gave an inspired performance to earn Sheffield United a point, with a double save in the first half preventing Everton from taking the lead. McFadden had Gerrard working hard again just a minute into the second period with a low drive which the keeper palmed away. Then Gerrard held on to a vicious Victor Anichebe shot. James Vaughan came close to opening the scoring with a good turn and shot on 57 minutes.
Everton made the breakthrough on the hour mark when Andy van der Meyde was fouled and Everton were awarded a free-kick. The Dutchman took the kick and Mark Hughes drove home at the far post. Van der Meyde came close again on 63 minutes but his shot squeezed wide of Gerrard's post. McFadden was replaced by John-Paul Kissock and Weir by Jack Rodwell. Sheffield equalised on 69 minutes when, after being awarded a free-kick, the ball fell to David Sommeil on the edge of the box and his deflected shot beat Turner.

Andy van der Meyde was named earlier in the starting line-up but pulled out at the last miinute for reasons unknown. Lee Molynuex put Everton ahead with a spectacular free-kick from 20 yards out after just 8 minutes. He curled the ball around the helpless Jerzy Dudek to the delight of the large crowd. But Liverpool were level just before the half-hour mark when Moroccan Nabil El Zhar scored from the penalty spot after being brought down by Mark Hughes.
Liverpool got a second penalty when Bolo Zenden was also brought down in the box. El Zhar looked to be taking the penalty before Zenden took the ball off him and then missed the spot-kick.
Anichebe thought he should have been awarded a penalty in the second half but the referee waved his protests away. But Liverpool were soon down to 10 men when Dudek was sent off. Anichebe stretched for a ball and but Dudek raised his hands to the striker's face and a red card followed abruptly. A 10-man brawl followed that incident and the referee handed out six yellow cards in all.
Everton made their numerical advantage pay soon after, as teenager James Vaughan latched onto a long kick from Wright to slide the ball past substitute goalkeeper David Martin. El Zhar tried in vain to level the game but Everton stayed strong to earn the victory.

Everton had Andy van der Meyde in their side as the Dutchman continued his efforts to get full match fitness but in fairness the home side did most of the attacking in the first half. Van der Meyde had Everton's first chance of the half, firing a low shot just wide of Encklman's goal. Just after, attacker Bjarni Vidarsson sent in a header which was saved well by the former Aston Villa goalkeeper.
Despite Everton's pressure the home side took the lead four minutes before the break Griffiths picked up the ball 35 yards out and hit a half-volley past Turner and into the Everton net. If Blackburn dominated the first half, the second was definitely Everton's with Van der Meyde, James Vaughan and Alan Kearney all testing the Rovers goalkeeper. With new Academy import, Aussie goalie Mike McEntagart on the bench, Everton were under pressure from City early on. Ashley Grimes had a glorious opportunity after just six minutes but put his shot wide and then Johnson too missed a chance minutes later. Everton grew in confidence and went close when James Vaughan tested keeper Joe Hart in the City goal. However, the visitors were still the dominant force and had further chances in the first half.
City took the lead just before the hour mark when the ball fell to Ashley Grimes in the box and he fired past Iain Turner. Adam Clayton should have made it two mid way through the second half but Turner saved again and that save proved to be vital. Everton levelled on the 71st minute when defender Mark Hughes nodded home at the far post for his third goal of the season. The equaliser seemed to stir Everton as Vaughan, Molyneux, and Vaughan again had chances to win it.
Wigan Athletic 0 - 2 Everton

James McFadden was the star of the show, his first strike was a precision finish following an eye-catching solo run into the opposition penalty area. The second 14 minutes later was the result of a perfectly timed run that beat the home side's offside trap and left keeper Russell Saunders in no-man's-land as McFadden turned the ball in from a John-Paul Kissock centre. The win was tarnished somewhat in injury time when young centre-back Darren Dennehy was dismissed after a second yellow card.

The visitors had former Everton winger Idan Tal on show. Everton took the lead through Bjarni after eight minutes as the Icelander headed home from Lee Molyneux's cross. They were two up at half-time thanks to a strike from on 18 minutes after a corner from the left.
The visitors came back well though with two goals in the second half. First Mark Charlesworth's header deflected past the unfortunate John Ruddy just after the hour mark. The Everton goalkeeper was then adjudged to have brought down Johann Smith in the box and Bolton were awarded a penalty. Israeli Tal converted the spot-kick to earn a point for Wanderers.

With the last Reserves game incredibly over two months ago, the lads were perhaps just a little rusty. Former Everton goalkeeper Paul Gerrard and Chinese midfielder Li Tie were on duty for the home side while Everton played Anderson da Silva along with Gary Naysmith and Alessandro Pistone at the back.
Anderson da Silva started lively and saw a shot go just wide in the early exchanges, James Vaughan too was busy keeping Gerrard alert in the home goal. Ahmed Fahti tested Iain Turner and Luton Shelton also went close. Everton started the second half well but they found themselves a goal behind after first Christian Nade had hit a post and then Dean Oliver finished inside the box to put the home side in front.
Substitute Kieran Agard combined with John Paul Kissock to allow Victor Anichebe to finish and put Everton level on 78 minutes but, just when it looked as though they would earn a point, Nicky Law sent in a corner and Lee Bromby cracked home a goal worthy of winning any match.

Tony Hibbert was in the home starting line up and he had some early defending to do. Everton began to put their own pressure on the visitors goal and Kieran Agard saw a chance cleared off the line. The first half was a scrappy affair with plenty of stops in play and the second period started in the same way. John Paul Kissock went very close with a curling shot and then Everton won a spot kick after Eddie Nolan pulled down Stephen Connor. Lee Molyneux stepped up only for Fielding in the Rovers goal to save well. Keith Treacy should have won it for the visitors but his effort came off the crossbar and away.

JAMES VAUGHAN scored a first half goal for Everton's second string but it wasn�t enough to prevent the Blues going down 2-1 at Manchester City. Vaughan was playing alongside Victor Anichebe in the Everton attack and both showed good running early on but their efforts were fruitless.
City took the lead just after the half hour mark when young Ashley Grimes broke forward and finished a good move down the left. Vaughan made his goal and Everton�s equaliser himself charging down Joe Hart�s clearance and rolling the ball into the empty net. City took the lead for the second time on 64 minutes when Ched Evans curled a low shot past Ruddy.

Everton had Richard Wright and Tony Hibbert in their line-up but no sign of Brazillian Anderson da Silva. Stephen Connor and Kieran Agard went close for the Everton but both put their efforts wide of United�s goal. Connor then beat United�s Kieran Lee and pulled the ball back for Bjarni Vidarsson who forced a great save from Tom Heaton. Despite playing well Everton couldn�t find a way through United�s defence and with just nine minutes remaining substitute Chris Fagan got on the end of Chris Eagles�s cross and fired the ball home from inside the box

The second part of the double-header against Man Utd was played at Netherton just five days after the sides met in Manchester just five days ago. But that didn't stop a bumper turnout at the Halton Stadium, with over 2,000 fans present. And with senior players in both squads off on International duty, recognizable Premiership players were in short supply.
Scott Spencer was an unused sub yet again. He has not started a single reserves game since joining Everton last summer and has made only one sub appearance at this level, back in the first game of the season. Paddy Boyle is apparently still injured.
For Everton, Andy van der Meyde was the only reserve in that category, coming back from yet another injury in yet another demonstration that he has what it is needed and can produce the goods for the Blues at the highest level. Again, there was no sign of Brazilian ace Anderson da Silva, who seems to have disappeared without trace.
Van der Meyde was involved in most of the first-half action in a promising display and, after enjoying a number of early chances, Everton took the lead on the stroke of half-time. Shaun Densmore back-heeled to Steven Morrison and his cross was met by Kieran Agard, who headed past Tom Heaton in the United goal. But the visitors were level soon after the re-start. Sam Hewson�s free-kick was headed home past John Ruddy by Craig Cathcart.
United were much the better team in the second half and Ruddy in the Everton goal had to make a couple of good saves including one to deny Hewson. The United captain then put his side ahead when Eagles�s shot was deflected and Hewson was on hand to put the ball past Ruddy. Everton put on some pressure at the end but to no avail. Van der Meyde played for 78 minutes before being replaced by Irish Academy forward Aidan Downes.

James McFadden was making his first appearance in a blue shirt since breaking a metatarsal earlier this season and he was involved for the whole of the 90 minutes, hitting the woodwork after just eight minutes. Everton suffered an early setback when the visitors took the lead on 15 minutes, Andrew Carroll making up for a miss minutes earlier, finishing past Richard Wright.
McFadden got Everton back on level terms nine minutes into the second half, pouncing on Peter Ramage�s back pass and slotting the ball past Forster in the Newcastle goal. McFadden hit the winner after Anderson da Silva�s initial shot was spilled by Forster. Alessandro Pistone was also back in the line-up but was replaced after 65 minutes by Shaun Densmore, but there didn�t seem to be any cause for concern.

EVERTON Reserves could only earn a point at the Halton Stadium, despite having most of the possession against Middlesbrough. Gary Naysmith played the full 90 minutes after his substitute appearance against Fulham on Saturday. Everton's first effort on goal came after 18 minutes as Steven Morrison's cross was headed just over by Anderson De Silva. Morrison tested Ross Turnbull in the Boro goal minutes later but the goalkeeper held the shot.
The second half produced little more goalmouth action for the tiny crowd to enjoy and a point was just about what both sides deserved. David Moyes, watching from the stands will be delighted at the sight of Naysmith's continued progress as the first team push for a Uefa Cup spot.

Nuno Valente gave Everton manager David Moyes a welcome boost, scoring after just two minutes. The Portuguese defender has been out injured with a thigh strain but looked lively from the start and linked up well with Aidan Downes to fire past Al Habsi in the Bolton goal for his first Everton goal.
Everton kept pressing and nearly doubled their lead on 16 minutes when Bjarni Vidarsson shot from distance only for his effort to go just wide. Everton stayed in front till the hour mark when ex-Blue Idan Tal levelled for the home side. Bolton where on top at this stage and it was no surprise when Greek international Stelios gave them all three points with a goal with 10 minutes remaining.

Scott Spencer had given Everton a first-half lead as both van der Meyde and Naysmith completed the 90 minutes Everton went close through van der Meyde, Spencer and Ryan Harpur. The visitors had chances too in a lively first 45 minutes but it Everton who struck first, right on half-time when John Irving won the ball before feeding Spencer who tucked his shot away well from the edge of the area.
Van der Meyde had a couple of efforts in the second half to win it for Everton but the Latics pressed hard for the equaliser and found it with 86 minutes on the clock. David Cotterill crossed for Lewis Montrose to head home.

Liverpool settled quickest, and Lindfield squandered a good chance after nine minutes when he failed to direct his header after a good cross by Darby. El Zhar was denied by a fine save from Ruddy shortly after, but a minute later Anderson capitalised on hesitation in the Everton midfield to run through and open the scoring with a cool finish.
Spencer almost hit back immediately after en error by Insua, but he couldn�t keep his shot down. He paid the price for his wayward finish less than a minute later when Lindfield released El Zhar, and although the Morroccan was beaten to the ball by Dennehy he appeared to deflect the defender�s clearance past Ruddy into the top corner.
Lindfield, Anderson and El Zhar both went close to increasing a rampant Liverpool�s lead, and the half-time whistle couldn�t come quickly enough for Everton, who made two changes at the break. Liverpool waited 10 minutes to make their first change, and it would pay almost immediate dividends when Kewell skipped past two defenders and cut the back for Lindfield to sidefoot in from close range. Agard pulled a goal back for Everton with 10 minutes remaining, blasting a shot past Roberts as the Liverpool defence appealed in vain for offside.

Everton attacked from the start and opened the scoring on 16 minutes when John Paul Kissock put Scott Spencer in on goal to lift the over the Prescot 'keeper from the edge of the area. Within two minutes it was 2-0 when Lee Molyneux broke down the left and from his low cross full-back Irving stroked home at the far post.
Jamie Jones had little to do, but Karl Bell missed a good opportunity to reduce the deficit for Cables, but fired wide from six yards. Four minutes into the second half Prescot substitute Lee Smith did score, but his effort was disallowed for offside. Spencer should have made it 3-0, but he shot over the bar after going round the Cables� keeper. He did finally grab his second and Everton�s third in the 65th minute, scoring again from another pass from Kissock.
Everton made a couple of changes late with Elder replacing Spencer and Norwegian goalkeeper Lars Stubhaug coming on. But almost his first touch of the ball was picking the ball out of the net as Thurston gave him no chance to fire in for a late consolation goal.
Everton v Liverpool
Liverpool withdrew from the Liverpool Senior Cup, claiming fixture congestion. Everton were given a bye into the Final.

Everton took a firm grip on the proceedings with two goals in as many minutes before the quarter stage had been completed. John Irving headed wide before Steven Morrison�s corner allowed Jack Rodwell to head in at the near post. Then, 60 seconds on, Morrison raced clear from John Paul Kissock�s through ball to put a low shot past Shane McWeeney for the second. It could easily have been 3-0 on 25 minutes when McWeeney did well to block out an angled effort by Kieran Agard.
Everton were forced into a change shortly after half-time with Darren Dennehy forced off through injury and replaced by Michael Stewart and their re-arranged rearguard thereafter did not look quite so secure. Gornell and Michael Johnston went close for Tranmere before on 57 minutes a 25-yard shot by Olly James deceived Jones to find the left corner. Rovers produced a strong finish. Curran headed onto the top netting and Davies was inches wide on 88 minutes. Then Tom Beahon saw a shot somehow blocked out in injury time as the home side searched in vain to force extra time.
