 FA PREMIER YOUTH ACADEMY LEAGUE

The FA Premier Youth Academy comprises one Youth League team at Under-18 level.  There are a parallel set of friendly games playing the same fixtures at Under-16 level, but they will not count towards any league table and are not reported here. The current set-up for the FA Premier Youth Academy has four or five regional groups of 10 teams each:

Group C (NW) Group B (NE) Group A (SE) Group D (SW) Group E
Blackburn Rvrs Derby County Aston Villa Bristol City Cardiff City
Crewe Alexandra Leeds United Birmingham C Crystal Pal Huddersfield
Everton Leicester C Charlton Ath Fulham Arsenal
Liverpool Middlesbrough Coventry City QPR Chelsea
Manchester Utd Newcastle Utd Ipswich Town Reading
Manchester City Notts Forest Millwall Southampton Barnsley
Bolton Wndrs Wrexham Norwich Tottenham H
Stoke City Sunderland Peterborough West Ham Utd
Wolverhampton W Sheffield Utd Watford Wimbledon
  West Brom Albion

The season starts with some inter-group matches against teams from the farthest (geographically) regional groups.  For Everton, that meant a game with a team each from Groups C and D.  Everton then played three teams from the closest Group A.

For the main part of the season, Everton play each of the other teams in their local Group, both home and away.  They finish up playing each of the other teams in Group A again, giving 28 matches in all.

UNDER-18 YOUTH ACADEMY LEAGUE — Match Details

The section below contains available team details and scorers for Everton U-18 matches, and brief match reports, if available.

 Everton 4 - 2 Bristol City

U-18 League Match No 1
Saturday 18 August 2007

Netherton

Everton: McEntagart; Sinnott, Barnett, Rodwell, McCarten; Krenn, Akpan, Redmond, Stewart; Agard, Codling.
Subs:
Stubhaug, McCardle, Wallace, Brizell. Hall.  Scorers: Rodwell, Sinnott, Akpan, Codling.

Neil Dewsnip’s side began brightly and took advantage of some excellent dead-ball deliveries from Danny Redmond.  They took the lead on 15 minutes when England schoolboy international captain Jack Rodwell scored from Redmond’s corner.  Cory Sinnott made it 2-0, heading home another of Redmond’s deliveries.

The wind was causing both sides a problem and Bristol reduced the arrears on the hour with a header, but almost immediately Hope Akpan also headed in from another Redmond corner. An error of judgement by Everton’s Australian goalkeeper Michael McEntagart saw Bristol score again.  But with five minutes left Lewis secured a 4-2 victory and all three points.

 Tottenham Hotspur 0 - 1 Everton

U-18 League Match No 2
Saturday 25 August 2007

London

Everton:  McEntagart; Stewart, Sinnott, Barnett, McCarten; Krenn, Akpan, Redmond, Baxter (Wallace 65), Agard (Sheppard 87), Codling (McAlaney 65).
Subs not used: Stubhaug, McCardle.  Scorers: Baxter.

Jose Baxter was one of three schoolboy players in Everton’s line-up and he scored five minutes before the break.  It was a well-worked strike as Danny Redmond fed London-born striker Kieran Agard, and from his pull-back Baxter fired in. Tottenham had lots of possession, but a solid team performance ensured all three points.  Had Agard not fired just wide when through on the keeper, the margin of victory could have been greater...

 Everton 1 - 1 Leeds United

U-18 League Match No 3
Saturday 1 September 2007

Netherton

Everton:  McEntagart; Rodwell (Stewart 60), Sinnott, Barnett, McCarten; Krenn, Akpan, O’Kane, Redmond; Baxter (Wallace 75), Codling (Sheppard 75).
Subs not used: Stubhaug.  Scorer: Baxter.

In a close match, both sides had chances to open the scoring but Everton had the best of it.  George Krenn, Louis Codling – in both halves – and Danny Redmond all went close to scoring and from a Jose Baxter free-kick the Leeds keeper saved superbly.  But it wasn’t until just past he hour mark that Everton finally got their reward.  Redmond and Moses Barnett did well down the left to create an opportunity for Bootle-born Baxter.

The England schoolboy international turned and fired into the bottom corner. Soon after Baxter had another effort chalked off due to offside, but Everton felt aggrieved as the decision looked to have been incorrect.  Everton were made to pay for that when with 15 minutes left Leeds equalised. Following a corner a shot from the edge of box went through a ruck of players and Everton’s Australian keeper Michael McEntagart couldn’t stop it from going into the bottom corner.

 Newcastle United 2 - 4 Everton

U-18 League Match No 4
Saturday 8 September 2007

Newcastle

Everton:  McEntagart; Stewart, Sinnott, McCarten, Barnett; Krenn (Agard 65), O’Kane, Akpan, Redmond; Baxter, Codling.
Subs not used: Stubhaug, Rodwell, Sheppard.  Scorers: Codling, Baxter 2, Agard.

Everton started slowly and were behind inside the first 10 minutes. But they rallied and were soon on level terms when Lewis Codling went round the keeper to equalise.  Then just before the break they took the lead when, following a clearance by Michael Stewart, Jose Baxter chipped the keeper superbly from 25 yards to give the Bootle youngster his third goal in as many matches. Everton could have been further in front moments later when Cory Sinnott hit the bar.

Newcastle levelled soon after the restart from a twice-taken penalty which was initially missed. The home side scored from the retake, which Everton felt aggrieved about it as there didn’t seem to be any reason for it to be taken again.  But Kieran Agard came off the bench to fire the visitors back into the lead.  In a lively match Jose Baxter secured the points from a cross from Codling, for his fourth goal of the season so far.

 Sheffield United 1 - 2 Everton

U-18 League Match No 5
Saturday 15 September 2007

Netherton

Everton:  McEntagart; Stewart, Sinnott, McCarten, Barnett: O’Kane, Akpan (Krenn 25), Redmond (McCready 85), Rodwell (Agard 60); Baxter, Codling.
Subs not used: Stughaug.  Scorers: Barnett, Codling.

United did much of the early running and took the lead just before the half-hour mark when they scored from a header following a counter-attack.  Everton replied almost immediately when Moses Barnett’s free-kick was dropped by the Sheffield United keeper and carried over the line, which was seen by the assistant referee. Both sides had their chances thereafter but after Kieran

Agard came on for Jack Redmond in the second half, Everton began to come more and more into the match.  Agard almost grabbed the winner himself, but he saw one effort come back off the post, another strike the bar and a third saved by the keeper. But Everton eventually got the reward for their efforts as Jose Baxter set up his strike partner Lewis Codling for his third goal of the season. Everton had chances to add to their lead but in the end Codling’s strike was enough.

 Everton 2 - 1 Sunderland

U-18 League Match No 6
Saturday 22 September 2007

Netherton

Everton:  Stubhaug; Stewart, McCardle, McCarten, Barnett: O’Kane, Krenn, Redmond (McCready 25), Codling; Baxter (Sheppard 90), Agard.
Subs not used: McEntagart?, Scorers: Codling, Agard.

The visitors took the lead after just four minutes with a long-range strike. And despite having plenty of the play it took until the 70th minute for Everton to equalise. Lewis Codling broke through onto Austrian midfielder George Krenn’s through ball to lift over the Sunderland keeper for his fourth goal of the season and his third in the last three. Codling had a hand in Agard's winner. His initial header from Tom McCready’s corner hit the bar, but Londoner Agard was on hand to turn the rebound into the back of the net.

 Wolverhampton Wanderers 0 - 1 Everton

U-18 League Match No 7
Saturday 29 September 2007

Wolverhampton

Everton:  McEntagart; Stewart, Rodwell, Barnett, McCarten; O’Kane, Kinsella, McCready, Krenn (Agard 65); Baxter (Sheppard 88), Codling.
Subs not used: McCardle.  Scorers: Baxter.

Jose Baxter's fifth goal of the season was enough to maintain Everton under-18s start to the season as they won 1-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday. The Bootle-born striker scored the only goal of the Premier Academy League match after just four minutes when he headed home Eunan O’Kane’s cross. But Wolves hit back and had plenty of possession, but they didn’t create too many chances.

Neil Dewsnip’s side did well to collect the three points and on the counter-attack they had several chances to increase their lead. Jay McCarten had a header cleared off the line following free-kick. While substitute Kieran Agard hit the bar and also saw another headed effort saved. And Lewis Codling almost added a second as well.

 Everton 0 - 1 Manchester City

U-18 League Match No 8
Saturday 6 October 2007

Netherton

Everton:  McEntagart; Stewart, Molyneux, McCarten, Sinnott; Krenn (Agard 60), Rodwell, O’Kane, McCready (Sheppard 80); Baxter, Codling.
Subs not used: Stubhaug.  Scorers: None.

Everton Under-18s lost their first game of the season as Manchester City won the Premier Academy League Group A top-of-the-table clash 1-0 at Netherton on Saturday. In a close match Neil Dewsnip’s side failed to maintain their unbeaten start despite having a few chances to at least take a point. City scored what turned out to be the winner just before half-time when they picked up on a loose ball and went on to fire past Everton goalkeeper Michael McEntagart from 20-yards.

Early in the second half Everton came close to an equalise, Eunan O’Kane firing narrowly wide, while substitute Kieran Agard shot over the bar with another effort. At the other end Australian keeper McEntagart saved from a free-kick and Cory Sinnott cleared off the line to keep Everton in the match. However, in the end City claimed all three points to stay top of the table.

 Crewe Alexandra 0 - 5 Everton

U-18 League Match No 9
Saturday 13 October 2007

Crewe

Everton:  McEntagart; Stewart, Molyneux, McCarten, Sinnott; Rodwell (Akpan 70), O’Kane, Redmond, Krenn (McCready 70); Agard, Codling (Powell 45).
Subs not used: Stubhaug, Baxter.  Scorers: Rodwell, Agard 2, Colding, Molyneux.

If there were any worries about how Everton Under-18s would react to their first defeat of the Premier Academy League season they were answered in emphatic fashion with stunning 5-0 victory at Crewe Alexandra on Saturday. Everton were 4-0 up at the break as they ran riot. Twice they had efforts cleared off the line and they also struck the woodwork.

Londoner Agard opened the scoring within a minute when James McCarten headed back across goal for the striker to score. Then England youth international Rodwell quickly added a second following a free-kick from Danny Redmond. Codling fired in his fifth goal of the season with an excellent 25-yard shot. And Everton added a fourth when left-back

Molyneux rifled in a low left-footed free-kick from 25 yards into the bottom corner. Everton continued to create chances throughout the second half and could have at least doubled their goals tally, but in the end they could only add one more soon after the break, through Kieran Agard.

 Everton 1 - 0 Blackburn Rovers

U-18 League Match No 10
Friday 19 October 2007

Finch Farm

Everton:  McEntagart; Stewart, McCarten, Sinnott, Barnett; Redmond, O’Kane, Akpan; Baxter (Krenn 85), Agard, Codling.
Subs not used: Stubhaug, McCready, Davies, Sheppard.  Scorer: McCarten.

James McCarten’s superb 20-yard free-kick was enough to give Everton Under-18s their eighth victory from 10 Premier Academy League games.  McCarten struck with 20 minutes left, but it was also their defence which provided the platform for victory.  Twice Danny Redmond cleared off his goal-line late on as the visitors put Everton under pressure. Everton had a couple of half-chances from Jose Baxter and Kieren Agard, but in the end Redmond’s free-kick was enough.

 Stoke City 0 - 2 Everton

U-18 League Match No 11
Saturday 26 October 2007

Netherton

Everton:  McEntagart; Stewart, McCarten, Sinnott, Barnett; McCready, Redmond (Sheppard 80), Baxter, O’Kane; Agard (Spencer 55), Codling (Powell 55). .
Subs not used: Stubhaug.  Scorers: Redmond, Spencer.

Goals in either half from Danny Redmond and substitute Scott Spencer saw Everton under-18s score their ninth victory in 11 matches in what has been a superb start to the season. Despite a sluggish start the victory could have been by an even bigger margin in the end. Redmond opened the scoring with a fine shot from the left just before half-time.

Then, following a double substitution 10 minutes into the second half, Spencer added to Everton’s advantage to seal the three points. At the other end Stoke’s only chance came late on when Everton’s Australian keeper Michael McEntagart saved superbly following a deflected effort.

 Liverpool 1 - 1 Everton

U-18 League Match No 12
Saturday 3 November 2007

Finch Farm, Liverpool

Everton:  Stubhaug; Stewart, McCarten, Rodwell, Barnett; McCready, Akpan, O’Kane, Redmond; Codling (Sheppard 60), Powell (Spencer 60).
Subs not used: Jones.  Scorer: Rodwell.

In a typically competitive Premier Academy League derby clash, clear-cut chances were at a premium and Everton started slowly after they had lost both defender Cory Sinnott and striker Kieran Agard in the warm-up through an infected toe and ankle problem respectively.

Everton went behind to an Astrit Adjarevic strike midway through the second half, but England youth international Rodwell rose to head home Danny Redmond’s free-kick on 70 minutes.  Liverpool hit the woodwork twice and Michael Stewart also cleared another effort off the line, but Everton had a few chances themselves and Karl Sheppard went close to snatching a late winner, but shot wide.

 Everton 2 - 1 West Bromwich Albion

U-18 League Match No 13
Saturday 10 November 2007

Netherton

Everton:  Stubhaug; Stewart, McCarten, Sinnott, Barnett; McCready (Sheppard 85), Rodwell, O’Kane, Codling; Baxter (Powell 50), Agard (Spencer 50).
Subs not used: McCardle.  Scorer: Codling 2.

In a goalless first half Everton were unfortunate not to go in ahead as Kieran Agard saw an effort ruled out harshly after play was brought back for an Everton free-kick. Early in the second half Everton had to make two substitutions with Agard and Jose Baxter being forced off with ankle and knee injuries respectively.

But it was one of the subs Scott Spencer, who made the opening goal, setting up Codling to fire home on the hour. And five minutes later Codling crashed home his second. West Brom reduced the deficit with 18 minutes left after they broke following an Everton corner but Everton held on to stay level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier Academy League North West section.

 Everton 2 - 0 Manchester United

U-18 League Match No 14
Saturday 17 November 2007

Finch Farm, Liverpool

Everton:  Stubhaug; Stewart, McCarten, Sinnott, Barnett; Redmond, McCready, Rodwell, O’Kane; Agard (Akpan 80), Codling.
Subs not used: Powell, Spencer.  Scorers: McCarten, Agard

There was little to choose between the sides before half-time although, Everton’s Norwegian keeper Lars Stubhaug produced two good saves following corners to deny United. But Everton took the lead on 55 minutes when centre-back McCarten  fired home a superb 25-yard free-kick.

Dewsnip’s youngsters effectively sealed the three points soon after England youth international Jack Rodwell broke through the middle before putting Agard through and London-born forward produced a typically clinical finish to make it 2-0 and secure their 10th win.

 Everton 0 - 0 Bolton Wanderers

U-18 League Match No 15
Saturday 1 December 2007

Bolton

Everton:  Stubhaug; Stewart, McCarten, McCardle, Barnett; Akpan, McCready, Redmond, O’Kane; Agard (Baxter 60), Codling (Powell 55).
Subs not used: McEntagart, Sheppard.  Scorers: None.

Everton Under-18s failed to take their chances and had to settle for a goalless draw as a combination good goalkeeping and lack of a killer instinct cost them. Everton striker Lewis Codling limped out of Saturday’s match with Bolton with a dead leg, but is expected to be fit for the Youth Cup next week, but Cory Sinnott, who has a medial ligament problem, is taking longer to recover and is a doubt.

 Everton 2 - 1 Stoke City

U-18 League Match No 16
Saturday 15 December 2007

Netherton

Everton:  Stubhaug; Stewart, McCarten, Rodwell, Barnett; Redmond, McCready, O’Kane, Akpan; Codling (Sheppard 70), Powell (Agard 55).
Subs not used: McCardle, Baxter.  Scorers: Redmond, Agard.

Lewis Codling had a goal disallowed and went close on a couple of occasions as Everton pressed for the opener in the first half. His fellow striker Luke Powell also went close, but Dewsnip’s couldn’t find a way past the Stoke keeper. But, after a goalless first half, Everton finally opened the scoring 10 minutes after the half-time interval, when Danny Redmond’s corner was initially caught by the visitors’ keeper before he fumbled and dropped the ball into his own net.

Everton doubled their lead five minutes later when Agard got in on goal from Hope Akpan’s pass before coolly slotting in for his sixth Academy League strike this season. Stoke reduced the arrears after a corner was only cleared to the edge of the box and they fired in with seven minutes left, but Everton held on.

 West Bromwich Albion 1 - 1 Everton

U-18 League Match No 17
Saturday 5 January 2008

West Midlands

Everton:  Stubhaug; Stewart, Sinnott, McCarten (85 McCardle), Barnett; McCready, Redmond, Baxter (70 Akpan), O’Kane; Agard (70 Powell ), Codling.
Subs not used: McEntagart.  Scorers: Agard.

Everton led after 15 minutes when Agard collected Jose Baxter’s lay-off just inside the box and fired in a low drive. Everton thought they had doubled their advantage but Lewis Codling’s effort was ruled out for offside.

Everton were left to rue their missed chances when Barnett’s backpass when straight past Everton keeper Lars Stubhaug for an unlikely equaliser on 65 minutes.  Everton had an Agard effort cleared off the line and sub Luke Powell fired wide when clean through.

Everton:  McEntagart; Stewart, Rodwell, Barnett, Sinnott; McCready (60 Akpan), Redmond, O’Kane, Baxter (75 Krenn); Codling, Agard.
Subs not used: Stubhaug, Sheppard.   Scorers: Agard 2, Codling

Despite two goals from Kieran Agard putting Everton under-18s 3-1 ahead they had to settle for a point once again as the shared six goals with Manchester United at the Carrington Complex on Saturday.

Despite a positive start from the visitors they went behind on 15 minutes.  A throw-in which Everton thought was theirs by taken quickly by United and caught them out.  The referee allowed United to play on and score. Everton equalised 15 minutes later when Lewis Codling lobbed home from 25 yards after linking with strike partner Agard.

The London-born forward Agard then got on the scoresheet himself to give Everton a 2-1 half-time lead via a deflected shot.Midway through the second half Agard doubled Everton’s advantage breaking onto a through-ball by Jose Baxter to net his 10th goal of the season.

Australian keeper Michael McEntagart denied United with a couple of fine saves, but the home team finally reduced the deficit to set up a nervous end.  And with five minutes left, United were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the Everton area and from it they equalised with a shot into the top corner that gave McEntagart no chance.

Everton:  McEntagart; McCardle, Akpan, Barnett, Sinnott; McCready, O’Kane, Redmond (75 Agard), Krenn (45 Powell); Codling, Baxter.
Subs not used: Sheppard.  Scorers: None.

Despite dominating for much of the second half and having a number of chances, Everton couldn’t grab their first win of 2008. Apart from one chance when Michael McEntagart misjudged a cross and the Wolves forward headed wide, the visitors were on the back foot.

Lewis Codling was denied by a superb save from the Wolves keeper while Lee McCardle headed just over following a corner.  In the last 10 minutes substitute Kieran Agard twice went through on goal only to fire wide as Everton continued to press.

This game could have ended in a stalemate, had Jose Baxter not missed from the penalty spot in the closing stages of a game that, at one stage, the Toffees trailed 2-0. The opening half saw Everton playing with the wind at their backs and they enjoyed dominance in the game as a result, with both Kieran Agard and Lewis Codling missing decent opportunities.

Agard was then involved in a moment of confusion with goalkeeper Michael McEntagart from a Bolton corner that allowed the home side to capitalise and take the lead against the run of play. A similar set-piece move doubled Bolton's lead early in the second half, the home side heading home at the far post. Dewsnip responded with a triple substitution and as the Under-18s galvanised they began to force their way back into the contest.

A goal from defender James McCarten provided hope, and then when substitute Powell was brought down in the area it seemed the Blues had a glorious opportunity to secure a point, but Jose Baxter missed from the spot.

Goals from George Krenn and Luke Powell gave Neil Dewsnip’s side a deserved success in a superb team performance. On seven minutes Austrian midfielder Krenn opened the scoring when he cut in from the right and fired in a low effort from the edge of the box.

Everton dominated much of the match but didn’t add to their first goal under midway through the second half. Powell lifted over the Blackburn keeper after he had been played in by Jose Baxter to virtually seal the three points. Everton created several opportunities to add to their score with substitute Kieran Agard and defender Lee McArdle both going close late on.

Hope Akpan saw a header ruled out harshly before James McCarten opened the scoring from Jose Baxter’s excellent delivery.  McCarten grabbed his second before Luke Powell put the finishing touches to some excellent approach play from Baxter after the restart.

Akpan was credited with the fourth after another excellent set-piece before an own goal made it 5-0 following a Tom McCready free-kick. The best was saved until last as McCready made it six with with a brilliant 25-yard strike.  Both Bootle-born attacker Jose Baxter and keeper Adam Davies are in  England Under-16s squad, at the Montaigu tournament.

Everton Under-18s  were the dominant side and had numerous opportunities to have won. Moses Barnett went close with a couple of early openings. Then Eunan O’Kane shot over the bar when in a good position. But against the run of play near the end of the first half Forest went ahead when James McCarten’s attempted clearance rebounded off a Forest striker and left Everton’s Australian keeper Michael McEntagert with no chance.

Everton came out for the second period in determined fashion and grabbed an equaliser when Tom McCready scored from close range following Lee McArdle’s cross from the right.  They continued to press for the winner and brought on attackers Kieran Agard and Lewis Codling. Agard hit the post as he was sent through on goal by Jose Baxter.  Then to compound that missed opportunity Forest went straight down the other end and grabbed the winner on the break in the last 10 minutes with a deflected shot.

Lewis Codling almost gave the Blues a perfect start but the striker squandered his effort after finding himself one on one with the goalkeeper. Shortly after Cory Sinnott forced the City custodian into a world class save with a well placed header from a free-kick. On the half hour mark, neat interplay between Codling and Powell set up the latter to finish with aplomb.

The Citizens stepped up a gear in the second half but the Blues were not for giving up the lead with some resolute defending. The game started to open up with City throwing everything at the Toffees. Kieran Agard, Danny Redmond and James McCarten all went close to extending the lead but 1-0 it remained.
