With the dark shadow of poverty hanging over the club, a threadbare squad was listed for this the final match of the pre-season program.  Rodwell and Gosling start with Lescott rested; no sign of bad boy James Vaughan...

It was a lively start with PSV almost scoring before Yakubu got free and tried to roll the ball under Issakson who somehow prevented the ball from going into the net.  After a long period of neutral play, first Gosling went on a mazy run, then Arteta looked ready to score off a nice ball from Gosling but failed to pull the trigger.

Amranat scored for PSV after 32 mins, a well-taken strike after a patient buildup and an explosive finish, cutting inside Baines, and rifling the ball high past Howard into the roof of the net. 

Substitutions of course a-plenty in the second half.  Those included virgin Goodison appearances for Lukas Jutkiewicz, Jose Baxter and James Wallace — a total unknown tall midfielder who has been impressing the Everton coaches.  He made a couple for sub appearances for the Under-18s early last season but then disappeared, and was probably injured for most of the season

Jagielka very nearly got a great goal near the end. Yobo was fouled and picked up a penalty, Arteta stroking it home with aplomb. And thus it ended.
