World Cup call-up

The Blues will have four players wearing their national colours for the  World Cup Finals in Qatar.

England No 1 goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is joined by defender Conor Coady, on loan from Wolves.

Ampadu Onana is selected by Roberto Martinez for the Belgium team while Idrissa Gana Geuye has been a fixture in the Senegal team for many years.

But there is no room on the plane for James Tarkowski, Coady's running mate, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin's increasingly tragic season is underlined by him also being overlooked.

Time for congratulations to Conor Coady and Jordan Pickford for making the England World Cup squad at Qatar, also Ampadu Onana for Belgium and Idrissa Gana Gueye.for Senegal.

That's probably the fewest World Cup call-ups of any of Premier League team.

Let's hope we can take advantage and get most of our squad fit and raring to go on Boxing Day.

No Tom Davies? Southgate out!

Seriously, how is Maguire ahead of Tarkowski?

Paul,

Call-ups aren't completed yet but apparently as of now, 7 teams have fewer players than us going. Which is surprising as these days with the expanded format I feel as if just about everyone in the Premier League goes.

Unfortunately Liverpool only have 5 going. It's one occasion when I'd have liked to see their whole squad getting selected and hopefully knackered out for a month.

Yes, reluctant congratulations to them all. Not forgetting Iwobi.

Nigeria didn't qualify, Will.

Jason, I agree re Maguire.

Sad reality – if Maguire had been omitted it would've provided drama and "discussions" of a scale to probably overshadow all else.

Kieran - yes, thanks, as I just recalled to my horror.

Seems I don't qualify either!

I'm really surprised that Coady was picked ahead of Tarkowski, I was half expecting both or just Tarkowski, but perhaps he sees Coady as the stronger "leader" if he decides to play him.

Anyway, congratulations to him and the rest.

Klopp has never won a trophy in a World Cup year, with some people saying it's because of the stringent doping tests applied by FIFA. If there's any truth in this then never mind 5 subs, every club should be demanding similar tests next April. We will see.

It's a competition that nobody seems to want, but might have come at a good time for Everton, after hearing that we are once again a squad without a genuine centre-forward, but I'm hoping this World Cup is like the night out you never planned, and we see loads of great football.

Coady might be going, but I can’t see him getting a minute on the pitch. It’s pretty obvious that Southgate will choose Maguire and Dier as his central defenders.

Alex, could've gone one of several ways as you suggest. Who could ever figure Southgate's thinking anyway.

All my life, I've absolutely loved the World Cup and Euros with the same zeal as when I first watched as a child. Did everything I could to see every possible minute whatever I was doing at the time in my life.

This time, I feel much less interested. I don't even know what they've done to me or how they've done it – but they have.

Rob, correct, there would have to be injuries.

Stones and Dier or Maguire, I think, but it should be Stones and Coady, with Pickford behind them… be like having Everton in the World Cup. 😉

A lot of people know my sentiment towards England but I'll watch the World Cup as a football fan as I always do.

Harry Maguire? Expensive Michael Kane. Repeating myself. Sorry, but I'll be having to listen to London supporters chanting his name throughout the World Cup because they like the song. The same ones who slag him off every week.

Pleased for Jordan and for Conor Coady. I hope they enjoy the occasion but most importantly come back safely ready for Boxing Day.

Maguire & Phillips have played about 8 minutes of football between them all season. How do they merit a place in the squad? May as well name the Ghost of Bobby Moore if we're just picking players on sentimentality. Gazza will be looking at those two names and wondering how close he was to a return to the England squad.

And Sterling, yes he's a handful on his day, but he's looked bang average every time I've seen him this season (I admit I don't watch many Chelsea games).

I am delighted for Pickford and Coady, but I agree with Rob and cannot see Southgate playing Coady at all.

And we all hope all four Evertonians don't shy away from a full-blooded performance this weekend, although it will undoubtedly be in the back of their minds.

I agree, Jeff (14), Slabhead and Dier have been poor.

Danny, think I'm gonna reserve my diminished enthusiasm and hop on for the later stages. This and avoiding all punditry will probably see me through to the final.

Jeff # 14. Hope not mate.

Imagine the outrage from the whole country, blaming Pickford and Coady for England's defeat to Brazil in the semi finals, despite Trent Arnold scoring a hat-trick of own goals, Kane missing three penalties, and Maguire and Dier spending time in a Qatar prison after being caught drinking on the streets after the quarterfinal win over surprise team of the tournament, hosts Qatar.

Imagine the pair of them in a Qatar court………….

Judge to Maguire, “Name?”

Maguire, “Do you not know who I am?”

Judge to Dier, “Name?"

Dier……”Dier”.

Judge, “We know you're dire, but what's your name?”

I hope Coady doesn't get anywhere near the pitch. Pickford playing is less of a risk.

Rob,

Yeah, remember when "Everton star" Bilic was Enemy Number One for "getting Laurent Blanc"?

Or when "Former Everton star" Materazzi was Enemy Number One for "getting Zidane sent off"?

Great to have you back, Rob, I'm actually laughing loudly at the genuine probability of that scenario panning out!!

Kieran, there was discussion elsewhere about the ones that got away. Now, not one of our home products, but we bought him relatively young. He was a bit erratic and typically Italian in terms of temperament (provocative and an accident waiting to happen), but I could see Materazzi was going places in that short time with us.

I new he wouldn't hang around long. His honours list speaks for itself and when we talk about aggression, well he had bags of it. Okay, sometimes a bit too much!!

I'm not condoning it but he got arguably the best player in the World at the time wound up to the point of putting his head in and getting sent off in a World Cup Final.

I hated that Everton kit. Possibly more than the Lineker one.

I was hoping the World Cup would help take my mind off Everton's woeful season so far but, having seen Southgate pick so many players who have not earned a spot, I think it will be another dismal England showing once the Iran game is done with.

Picking Phillips, Sterling, Dier and suckhole Henderson not to mention Wilson ahead of Toney is evidence of a brainless manager.

What did surprise me is that he didn't pick Loftus-Cheek.

Can't believe Howard Kendall has been omitted again.

All welcome, Dale. In fact I wish more could be bothered to see what they call conspiratorial is 5 minutes verification away.

I could give you a long list from just recent times with the big V alone but I know it sends you into a tizzy.

Delighted for Coady, I hope he plays personally. I wouldn't worry if he did, the guy is made of stone. So is Tarkowski, I would have loved for them both to go and play together.

Pleased for Coady in particular. I personally won't be watching this World Cup. It's a bloody disgrace where it's being played and the corruption that went into Qatar getting the nod.

An ex-Blue, Cenk Tosun, is playing against Scotland in an international friendly.
He has been involved already (but unsuccessfully) in an attack. Not for the first time it makes me think “”at least THAT much has happened”.

Very ‘un-Rondon-esque.

I know this is only a ‘friendly' 🙄 but McTominay has now gone off, subbed rather than sent off.

Was only a matter of time though, when he was booked it was ‘Milner-esque' in the certainty of it, almost as if referees had his name ready to be added in the “bookings” column of his refereeing spreadsheet.
