Everton beat Villa in final warm-up match

As he was in the second exhibition game in Australia, Neil Maupay was on target in Everton's friendly win over Aston Villa

Everton hosted Aston Villa in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Goodison Park and ran out 2-0 winners as the resumption of the Premier League programme on Boxing Day approaches.

Anthony Gordon and Neal Maupay were on target for the Blues, who also gave minutes to the likes of Stanley Mills.

Jordan Pickford, meanwhile, was in action following his exploits for England in Qatar, producing saves to deny Ludwig Augustinsson and John McGinn.

Everton return to full competitive action on Monday when bottom club Wolverhampton Wanderers come to Merseyside with new manager, Julen Lopetegui, taking charge of his first match since succeeding Bruno Lage before the break for the World Cup.

Toffees boss, Frank Lampard, will be hoping that his charges can hit the ground running having stumbled into the international hiatus with three successive defeats in all competitions.

Rob,

Interesting it looks like our strongest line-up but they also mentioned Mills. Wonder of he started or was off the bench but maybe a sign we will see more of him in the coming months?

Kieran,

I cannot find any information on the starting line-up, or details of any substitutions, but I assume most of the first-team squad were involved at some point or another.

Breaking News: All Everton games for the rest of the season are to be secret, with only the final score revealed, 6 weeks after the game.

Rob,

There is a report on the Everton website has a number of players mentioned including two goalies, Pickford first half and Begovic in the second half. Patterson had a hand in the first goal with Iwobi and McNeil creating the second. Tarkowski and Mykolenko played, so a near enough first team, and Villa also had a strong team out.

Dave, it also has pictures of Gueye, Gordon. So other than Onana, I can't really think of anyone fit who was missing from the usual starters.

Neil Maupay seems to have found his scoring boots, let's hope he keeps wearing them in games that really matter, and we have quite a few on the horizon, that could determine how our final run-in pans out.

Still think we need a foray into the Transfer Market, with some more deadwood and long-term sicknotes being thrown in, even as make-weights to get them off the books. Traditionally, the January Window is never really a good Market Place, but we have had a few gems in the past, so there is always 'hope'. A word that is always associated with us supporters, for far too long now.

Maupay scores, it's like a new signing. And Gordon showing he's worth £100k a week. Top six still on.

Pat K, been gargling with mulled wine, and forgot to spit out ? Or attacking that bottle of Malt, while still in it's wrapper under the Christmas Tree ? Either way, I admire your optimism, which, I hope is shared by the players and Coaching Staff. 🎅🎉✨😜

That's the spirit Pat. I'll go for a more modest 7th and that new European competition.

Derek. Gargling mulled wine (Gluhwein in German or Glogg in the Scandics).

Stop putting ideas in my head. You know us ex military types can't resist a challenge or temptation!!!

Danny, just found out I have a Ticket for Boxing Day. Will have to drive down as Trains off by the looks of things, hopefully meet you either at Oak or Dark House before. Assuming you are going of course, let me know because I still have your belated Birthday Present. Which will now also double as a Chrissie one too. :-)

I'm sure we can look forward to Calvert-Lewin having a bizarre accident involving a Christmas tree, Mina getting serious paper cuts from opening presents requiring 6 months out of the first team, Iwobi starting as a fourth player at centre-back, and a record number of passes between Pickford and the back line of nine in their own half.

Maupay will be introduced to the rest of the team after the final whistle.

Yesssss!!!!! Behind closed doors like football should be played. Did they have those video pics of fans placed around the field like the early covid days?

No crowds or TV at matches! Does that mean I can push my couch back against the Living Room wall and not have to hide anymore?

It's been some break from club football, huh? I'm just happy it was against a Premier League side, this behind-the-closed-doors game, and a win with a couple of goals – you must take anything good in these times.

Doucouré out, bringing room for improvement at the front; please keep this good track goin'. COYB, always there for the club from Nuuk, Greenland. Merry Christmas everybody.

Strangely, we always win the games that don't matter... still, at least Maupay scored!
