Oxford Utd have completed the signing of Stan Milss on loan from Everton U21s.

Sean Dyche has let the youngster head out on loan this summer to give him a shot at regular minutes while multiple EFL sides have enquired about the 19-year-old.

This suggests that Mills is not ready to make the massive step up from playing Under-21 football to training with the first team and maybe seeing Premier League action from the bench despite making two appearances last season in the Carabao Cup.

Mills plays as a right-winger primarily and he’s been prolific there at youth level. He netted 13 goals in 21 games across all competitions last season.

Everton director of football Kevin Thelwell said: “Stan has made encouraging progress through our academy, resulting in competitive action and training sessions with our men’s senior team.

“His move to Oxford United is his first loan switch and will provide him with vital experience in League One to support the next phase of his development.”

Give him a good season on loan and then get him back vying for a first team spot ahead of McNeil and Gnonto – the future is bright!

I like what I've seen of Mills. Likes to run at defenders and shoot, also provides plenty of assists. I would've liked to see him given a bit of game time here in the last 20 minutes of games to run at tired defenders but, for his development, a loan is best.

Give a recall clause just in case we need him at any point during the season.

Whatever any of us think, it looks like "the market" has decided that Mills is not yet ready for the Championship. Let's hope he has a cracking season and develops into a player ready for some first team minutes.

I can't help but think that players like Labone, Wright, Harvey, Royle, Husband, Hurst, Whittle, Ratcliffe, Stevens and more were never loaned out as youngsters but maybe it wasn't in vogue in their time but they, in the main, were given the opportunity of first team football in their early teens. Mind you, neither were Academies (and their super-duper coaches?) nor having players (still have trouble finding a group name for those so young) from eight years old.

So has the game at senior level become that much faster and physical while the junior level has stood still or is there something not quite right with the present day set up as I can't see how lower level clubs coaches are so much better at getting the best out of these youngsters, or is it the fear of failure and the monetary loss that comes with it?

And again, who are the Burnley or West Brom of the '60s finishing schools today, albeit legend has it that Alan Ball was turned down a couple of times as too small.

Alan J, in those days they cut their teeth against grown ups in the Central League. Not like now

Andrew(*5); And Colin Harvey in the San Siro, Howard Kendall at the time the youngest to appear in an FA Cup Final and Alan Ball, 20, in a World Cup Final. Joe Royle debut at 16 says that they didn't spend too long in the reserves.

It doesn't say in the OP and if like me you didn't know what league Oxford are in next season I looked it up - League One.
I will try to go watch when he's playing Bristol Rovers, which is the closest team to my home these days.
And how proud must Danny Mills be after his own half- decent career - one son making his way in professional football and the other already British 1500 metre athletics champion. Their mother must be very sporty!

This is the young man's big chance to step up to a truly professional level. I love the glimpses I've seen.

Plymouth is a good fit for Warrington, managed by our one-time "New Steven Gerrard" - Steven Schumacher. Good move. Let's hope he kicks on as he has ability

Robert (11) - Agree.

League One Champions last season. Now Lewis gets a shot in the Championship. A move up from League One for him too.

Interested to see if his athleticism and ball skill is up to snuff in the Championship.

So that's him added to Lewis Gibson they signed. And Brendan Galloway, remember him? He's with them too.

Good luck to him.

In addition to Schumacher being manager at Plymouth, they also have Neil Dewsnip as Director of Football. He's bound to know quite a few of our young lads.

I live in Oxford and try to get to a few Oxford United games each year. Highly confidential scouting report to follow whenever I do get to see Stanley play in the flesh... :)

Steve @13 - good point about Dewsnip, according to the local press:

"Dewsnip, who has known Warrington since his Under-9 days at Everton, said, “I know what he is capable of and am pleased we have to have been able to bring him to Argyle. We have had great success in recent seasons with young, hungry, talented loan players joining us, and we look forward to Lewis adding to that list.”

Good luck, keep developing.

Not seen much of Stanley but looks to have the skills set to make the grade eventually at senior level.I know many promising young players can't take the final step up regardless of how good they have been at junior level, but regular playing time has got to help.
Hope his development continues and he becomes a great asset to Everton in the years ahead.
