Ashley Young made his debut as a pundit on Sky Sports last night and he had some glowing things to say about Everton and the work that Sean Dyche has done with the Blues this season.

The veteran joined Jamie Carragher in reviewing the performance of his former club, Manchester United, after they were drubbed 4-0 by Crystal Palace but it was his comments about Everton, whom he only joined last summer as a free agent, that will have been music to the ears of viewers of a Toffees persuasion.

Carragher asked him how things had been at Goodison during what has been a turbulent season that saw the Club hit with two separate points deductions while a tortuous takeover saga has rumbled on off the pitch since September, all set against the backdrop of the ongoing construction of the fabulous new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock.

“We've always said about Everton, the fans, the Club... it's massive and I don't think you actually realise that until you’re inside the Club," Young replied.

"The manager has done a fantastic job [in the face of] points deductions and whatnot, but everything about the Club  — the fans, the way they love the Club… You know, when you’re doing well, they’re so behind you that you just want to go out there and do well.

“It’s disappointing because of how the last few years have gone for the Club and where we found ourselves. Whereas, when you looked at previous teams at Everton, they were pushing towards the European places, mid-table and I can see that once things happen with the takeover … I can see the Club going back to where it should be.

“Quite a few of us have been to the [new] stadium and, like I say, you can see and feel how big the Club actually is and where the Club wants to get to — with the new stadium, with the manager, with Kev (Thelwell), the sporting director as well… they’ve all been fantastic for Everton Football Club.

“And there are some fantastic players there as well. I’ve never been in dressing rooms where, not just the dressing room but the staff, everybody… the way the manager has got the Club together is fantastic to see and it’s fantastic to be a part of."

Well done, Ashley, and thank you for your contributions this season.

However, I do hope that we will remember you as a one-season wonder… a further season would be pushing things too far.

Everton is a great club and the fans are special and get behind their team.

Unfortunately for Young, he will be lucky if he gets a contract at the end of the season – his comments and predicament aside.

The fans are being consistently let down, by financiers who have bought into the club as a business venture or sideline, showing no appreciation for what the club really means to the fans.

We have been used and disrespected over many seasons, with little other than survival to show for it, and we have been laden with debt that puts us in a perilous position of administration.

Thanks to the loyal players who know what this club is about… but get rid of the shirkers (they know who they are).

If we are ever able to attract a consortium of owners who really know what Everton are about, and if they stay around long enough to give the club stability and prosperity, then with the new stadium coming into play soon, there may be brighter times on the horizon, and the phoenix may rise from the ashes.

Respect to Ashley Young. To keep himself fit and play at the highest level at the age of 38 years in a position where he is up against the speediest and most talented players is a testament to his character and professionalism.

He was part of the squad that kept us up during the most trying of circumstances, and for that, I am sure that all Blues will look back with gratitude and appreciation – even if it was for just one season.

Ashley's words and those of Tim Howard this week demonstrates how this club of ours has an impact on players who serve Everton. They realise who and what we are. Two players who played for the biggest club in the world but have affection for Everton.

For the likes of me who has never known anything different since I can remember since my very earliest memories, I know nothing else. It is easy and engrained in my DNA.

Those who join along soon get the bug. Is infectious. As John Senior would say, Evertonitis. It is incurable. You are never going back – no matter what.

I don't think some fans realize where Everton are: We are on our knees and its not going to get better for a long time.

Young at 38 is a very fit guy and was brought in because he could fill in at a number of positions, not sure the manager thought he would play that number of games (the Alan Harper of today).

If he is not kept on, we could well see another player who has been round the clock a few times joining us – and he will be in his thirties...

Players at the end of their careers must love coming here.

Virtually guaranteed a first-team spot at a place still regarded as a football institution, on decent dough, playing meaningful top-level footy – versus the alternative of drifting away in the lower leagues – no wonder they eulogise.

Compare and contrast Lukaku, Rooney and very likely Branthwaite and the problem here stands out like a sore thumb.

You know what, that guy has put all he has into every minute of every game when wearing the shirt. He has been a consummate professional. And he has been better than a fair few of his team mates.

In an ideal world, Ashley Young would never be here at this stage of his career. But due to 30 years of destruction, we are in hell and he is someone unafraid of helping pull the playing side out of Masters's Premier League Inferno.

For all those who deride and insult him, take a long hard look at all those great players that you can't name who came forward to fight our cause. And those who have come, taken the money, and not done a goddam thing.

Now having lit that bluenose touch paper, Matron, my tin hat, please!

John # 5, I am with you on this.

Given the state of the club, we simply cannot afford the sorts of players fans actually want – like McTominay, Gallagher and others. Players like Young will help us get past these dire times and make sense provided the wage demands are not too high.

Provided we're also recruiting young talent at the same time, it makes sense.

Left-back, right-back, right-wing, has he played every game nearly? What a signing.

He's obviously 52 so gets found out quite a lot, but it was an inspired signing by Dyche to get someone in who could cover so many positions and at a standard better than we have.

He is a very experienced player. We need players like him at the moment. Be glad to see him for another year.

Hi Danny [4],

You are correct in saying that Evertonians have DNA in their blood but I'm sure that it can be said of many other fans. I'm also sure that there are many fans of less famous clubs who regard their heroes with the same passion that we show for Everton.

I have always said that if I had been born in Barnsley in the 50s, my club would have been Barnsley and my hero would have been Tommy Taylor. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Barnsley is now full of Liverpool, Manchester City, and Arsenal shirts.

I wish that I had a £1 for every time I've heard "I used to be a Liverpudlian". They'll be throwing soil on me or lighting the barbecue, and I will have booked a disco for those who wish to dance on my grave. There will be no doubt that cause of death will be "Evertonitis".

Young has been decent this season, especially in the last month or so and by all accounts has been a useful voice in the dressing room and setting standards.

He cost no money and I believe his wages are not that high.

To have reliable, professional players who can fill multiple positions on low wages is sadly exactly the sort of pragmatism Everton requires right now.

Having said that I would hope if he stays he's starting fewer games next season and right back is one of the most important positions to strengthen in my eyes.

Not the perfect squad padder due to age / legs (no Gareth Barry anyway) but generally not as bad as many made out.

Hopefully one of the youngsters has been quietly maturing in the background and will keep him benched/ and spreading wisdom in the dressing room or at Finch Farm next season if he gets another 12 months.

Has Stanley Mills recovered from his injury yet?

I won't insult Young. He's a proper professional, has looked after himself, he's given what he has, and all credit to him.

But I'm not seeing what others are. I'm not sure how a defender can be adjudged to have played well, except for the big vital moments when he got found wanting.

All the best to him for the future, but I hope that future isn't at Everton. I don't believe that we can't find someone with similar current ability but any kind of upside.

I bet even Ashley Young is surprised he has played 29 games this season.

That is why more depth at full back is needed next season as a priority.

That’s fair Ernie.

He has looked after himself and deserves credit to still be playing at the highest level.

The same can be said for Gareth Barry. I think he was close to 40 before he called it a day.

Benitez and Rondon, Dyche and Young.

Sticks to beat up those two managers when everybody knows they should really be signing much better players!
