Armando Broja avoided going to hospital after damaging his ankle and needing oxygen before being stretchered off in Everton’s 2-0 FA Cup victory over Peterborough United on Thursday night.

Broja was fit enough to make the bench for Everton’s third-round tie against Peterborough, with Sean Dyche sacked as manager just three hours before kick-off. Broja was introduced in the 68th minute. But after a robust tackle from Posh defender Manny Fernandez, the Albania international went down and required lengthy treatment. He was given oxygen and had to be carried off on a stretcher, but avoided going to hospital.

Leighton Baines said of Broja’s injury: “It looked bad, didn't it? You've seen him go off to the other side of the pitch and we weren't sure if he would go to hospital or not but he hasn't. We don't know the extent of it at the moment but he is still here. He hasn't been taken to hospital so I've taken that as a good sign.”

Broja is no stranger to injuries, having joined the club on loan from Chelsea with an achilles problem that took 4 months to heal before he played his first game for the club. In last Saturday’s 1-0 loss at Bournemouth, he had to be substituted before half-time with a back issue sustained when kicking the ground while taking a shot.

Anyone know what the situation is with Broja?

Robert, I've not heard the extent of Broja’s injury yet, but it didn’t look good, and to be taken right off to hospital doesn’t bode well for him.

I’m guessing we’ve seen the last of him in an Everton shirt. Will he now return to Chelsea, or does it remain the responsibility of Everton to treat his injury?

If he does return to Chelsea, does that mean his loan contract would be terminated, freeing up a space to bring another player in on loan?

Broja wasn't taken to hospital, Rob. See Baines's comments.

If he is done for, though, we should ship him straight back and free up that space to bring Rashford in until the end of the season.

Rob,

I'm only going off what Baines said in his post-match interview.

Not to disrespect your mate but I think I’ll take what Baines said over someone seeing him taken off to hospital.

Here you go, Rob.

At 4:30 Baines talks about it.

Shaun, seems a bit odd to get carried away on a stretcher, across the pitch to the corner where an ambulance is, be seen by someone getting put into the ambulance… and yet not taken to a hospital.

I wonder where he was going then?

Unfortunately for the club we can't just send him back because he's damaged.

He's contracted to Everton for the remainder of the season and with the terms having been quite favourable (didn't have to pay until he was fit) I can't see Chelsea showing further charity and saying "Yeh go on we'll take him back to help you out."

He did, seemingly get put into the ambulance where he was initially assessed and then taken out again.

Whether he went back in again and then went to hospital is unclear.

It was all a bit in out in out don't shake him all about!

Rob, it's a YouTube of Leighton's post-match interview.

As Shaun says, around 4:30, he confirms that Broja hadn't gone to hospital and was still at Goodison so, he (Leighton), hoped that the injury was not as bad as it looked on TV.

Shaun, cheers, I’ve just looked at that clip. However, Baines doesn’t say Broja wasn’t taken to hospital, he just says he doesn't know the extent of the injury.

Cheers Hugh and Brian. Think I’ve watched a different clip because the one I’ve just watched was only just under three minutes long.

Brian # 6, I think you're probably right. Youth development loans tend to get cancelled if the player is badly injured but that's completely different.

Others may be able to, but I can't think of an example of a player being sent back to the parent club due to injury or loss of form etc. So presumably loan contracts don't generally allow it.

Just been reading around the web regards Broja and his loan status.

Apparently, if an injury is serious, the parent club usually recalls the player to oversee his rehabilitation. Whilst the original loan agreement necessitates that the loan club takes out insurance to cover the eventuality of the loanee being injured.

I guess it all comes down to how badly injured Broja is.?

General question

Specific Broja question, on a message board

Sheff Utd in the same situation

Also, the bad news is, according to the EPL handbook, a club can only register a maximum of four loans in a season. With a maximum 2 domestic and two foreign.

So, even if Broja went back to Chelsea we couldn't loan another player.

NB This rule was introduced for the 24/25 season, Everton that!
