Season › 2024-25 › News Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur Lyndon Lloyd 18/01/2025 100comments | Jump to last Match Preview David Moyes takes charge of his second match since re-joining Everton as manager, this time with the benefit of a full week with his new charges as he plots to end a three-game losing streak when Tottenham come to town. The Blues, who haven't tasted victory since the first week of December and who have only scored in two of their last 11 games, lost narrowly to Aston Villa on Wednesday evening so Moyes will be under no illusions as to the size of the job he has on his hands. He will have to work with the same group of players against Spurs with the Club still assessing potential transfer targets and none of the players who have been out injured recently available for selection, although James Garner is close to making his return. The midfielder is back in full training after recovering from a back problem but he will be given a run-out for the Under-21s before being considered for first-team action. Tim Iroegbunam and Youssef Chermiti remain sidelined while Seamus Coleman has a calf issue that means he is ruled out again alongside longer-term absentee, Armando Broja. Spurs travel at a low ebb themselves, having won just once in the Premier League since late November and slipped out of the top half to 14th place. Ange Postecoglou is under increasing pressure to turn the Londoners' form around but the Australian is insistent he won't change his preference for open, attacking football and that might give Everton hope of seeing more opportunities after managing to fashion a couple of good chances against Villa in midweek. The Londoners, who haven't lost at Goodison since the end of Moyes's first spell in charge of Everton, will be without Dominic Solanke which makes former Blues favourite Richarlison a likley starter up front now that he is fit again. Disclaimer () Jim Bennings 1 Posted 18/01/2025 at 15:07:51 Surprised it hasn't been mentioned in the preview that we haven't beaten Tottenham at Goodison since David Moyes was last here in December 2012, which is an absolute abomination.Taking our horrifically bad record against Spurs out of the equation and this game into isolation, I'm just hopeful that we can finally see some bloody goals.Spurs will undoubtedly be very low on confidence at the moment, they look like a shadow of the side they have been in recent seasons and for me they are there for the taking. But this is Everton, the team that can't score goals. At some stage we need to start winning football matches, because as bad as the bottom three are, all it will take is one of them to take 4 points from 2 matches and we will start feeling the jitters. It's Brighton away after this, another fixture which looks very daunting, and then we come to a 9 pointer against Leicester. Jack Convery 2 Posted 18/01/2025 at 15:08:53 We need 3 points. End of.4, 3, 2, 1. with overlapping full backs.Pickford, Patterson, Tarks, Branthwaite, Mykolenko.Armstrong, Gueye, Mangala.Lindstrom, Harrison ( or Garner if fit).N'Diaye. Colin Crooks 3 Posted 18/01/2025 at 15:18:42 I thought we beat Spurs 5-4.When Carlo was panicking so much he very nearly had to put his coffee down Dale Rose 4 Posted 18/01/2025 at 15:24:06 I thought we had beaten them in one of the cups a couple of years ago... Stuart Sharp 5 Posted 18/01/2025 at 15:25:14 That was a cup game Colin, so I assume Jim's stat refers to the league. That cup game was amazing... in every sense of the word. Wee Bernard had one of his better games, if I remember rightly. Paul Birmingham 6 Posted 18/01/2025 at 15:27:31 We beat them 5- 4 in the FAC under Carlo.Bernard's volley towards the end was one of the best goals in a long time at Goodison. It would be nice to get a couple and win tomorrow.UTFTs! Colin Crooks 7 Posted 18/01/2025 at 15:29:42 Ah selective stats. Andy Meighan 8 Posted 18/01/2025 at 15:29:58 Why does it seem to be only Everton that have shit home records against certain sides? I can't remember the last time we beat Villa at home, and now Spurs tomorrow who we haven't beat here as Jim pointed out since 2012, that is astonishing and absolutely embarrassing.Since Moyes's first spell, we've had Martinez, Silva, Allardyce, Carlo, the waiter, and Dyche – 6 managers – and haven't beaten them since 2012! I doubt there's another Premier League side with a worse record than that.Spurs are struggling at the minute and even little Tamworth took them to extra time whilst nearly winning it at the death. Up next for them, the remedy club who cure everyone's ailments, another game I'm not looking forward to, even given Spurs injury list. One thing is for certain: he has got to change that line-up; otherwise, I don't think we will get anything from the game. Yes, I understand he's only been here 5 minutes… but he could have tweaked it the other night but didn't – it was like Dyche was in the dugout. We can't keep relying on the teams below us to carry on losing, we have to help ourselves – starting tomorrow ! Jim Bennings 9 Posted 18/01/2025 at 15:52:00 A Cup game lads, which wasn't actually won in 90 minutes so you can't really class it the same.We have won 5 league games against Spurs at Goodison since 1992 to cut a long story short.Dismal. Frank Sheppard 10 Posted 18/01/2025 at 16:01:29 Pickford OBrien Tarks BranthwaitePatterson Mykolenko Lindstrom Gueye Mangala NDiaye DCL Hopefully this selection may pose a threat, create and put away chances. Alan J Thompson 11 Posted 18/01/2025 at 16:01:53 Should somebody be having a halftime chat with Richarlison? David West 12 Posted 18/01/2025 at 16:13:22 Like to see a back 3 tried. Not much can be done with personnel so the shape has to change. 352. Pickford Tarks Branthwaite O'brien Myko Harrison Lindstrom Gana MangalaNdiaye Beto Raymond Fox 13 Posted 18/01/2025 at 16:18:20 Our defence is easily the best part of our team but they score for fun so I don't know how that will work out.We all know what our trouble is, a couple of penalties might be the answer. Having said that we very very seldom get one. Mihir Ambardekar 14 Posted 18/01/2025 at 16:27:06 Not very upbeat. We don't have quality on bench and most of the players we have on pitch are very poor and out of form. We have injury issues. Winter transfer window is already on and there are not many players linked. Nothing concrete so far. God help us and hope to survive this season. Stu Darlington 15 Posted 18/01/2025 at 16:48:05 Moyes's demeanour at the presser wasn't particularly inspiring.Their team is set up to score goals but defence is vulnerable, especially with the injuries they have. Our defence is our strong point but we can't score a goal to save our lives. So it looks like their attack versus our defence. The best outcome I can see for us is a goalless draw unless we get lucky at a set piece.I don't know how it has got to this. With the possible exception of Richarlison, everyone knows we've needed a goalscorer since Lukaku left and yet here we are! Jim Bennings 16 Posted 18/01/2025 at 17:03:22 With Palace winning, the hopes of getting any higher now than we are have all but gone out the window. So yet another season of just hoping we can stay up. Brian Williams 17 Posted 18/01/2025 at 17:05:32 Just realised that Jim? Derek Knox 18 Posted 18/01/2025 at 17:19:58 With no new faces yet through the door (disappointingly) all we can hope for is two old faces (Doucoure and Harrison) are nowhere near the starting line-up. A hard fought scrappy win will do!Patterson at right-wingback and play a back 3? George Cumiskey 19 Posted 18/01/2025 at 17:37:13 Jack @2, Harrison?????? Stuart Sharp 20 Posted 18/01/2025 at 17:41:52 Doucoure not playing would be like a new signing. George Cumiskey 21 Posted 18/01/2025 at 17:42:40 I can't believe a couple of people on ToffeeWeb have included Harrison in the starting eleven, OMG 😱 Christy Ring 22 Posted 18/01/2025 at 17:43:26 Can Moyes leave Doucoure and Harrison on the bench at best please. Mark Andersson 23 Posted 18/01/2025 at 17:51:30 Pathetic! Moyes… Dyche… matters not, the team is shite. Moyes looks defeated knowing this. Mr Ego has realized it after one game. Billy Shears 24 Posted 18/01/2025 at 17:55:21 Unless Moyes is braver and bolder with his starting XI, then I predict more gloom at Goodison.Spurs, comfy 0-2 win, I'm afraid! Derek Knox 25 Posted 18/01/2025 at 17:57:49 Strange isn't it? We can all see where the problem lies, yet those who are picking the team can't! Jeff Armstrong 26 Posted 18/01/2025 at 17:58:46 Jim #16, we've been in a league of 5 for about a month. Mal van Schaick 27 Posted 18/01/2025 at 18:00:36 Try O'Brien in midfield, to give us a more combative edge. Bring Keane in to play a back five and play Ndaiye behind Calvert-Lewin, because the wingers are not working. Nigel Scowen 28 Posted 18/01/2025 at 18:02:55 George @21Me too, George, unbelievable!PickfordPatterson Tarkowski Branthwaite MykolenkoMangala Gueye ArmstrongLindstrom NdiayeBeto Liam Mogan 29 Posted 18/01/2025 at 18:03:38 Derek 25, Strictly winner Chris McCausland and musical polymath Steveland Morris could see where our problems are. It's fixing them that everyone has trouble with. Jeff Armstrong 30 Posted 18/01/2025 at 18:04:07 Derek, I gave Moyes a free hit against Villa, but if he picks Harrison and Doucoure tomorrow, then he learned nothing from that game.Surely it must be known around the club that those two have been gash for months… there's reasons we're Bottom 5. Billy Shears 31 Posted 18/01/2025 at 18:08:39 A fair few of the Blues have plumped for Gana in their starting eleven... Why???He is one major problem... way too slow, negative and should be moved on pronto. We only need one defensive midfielder – Mangala.Play a 5-3-2 system and just fucking attack them from the off... if not, then it'll be another grim day at Goodison! Robert Tressell 32 Posted 18/01/2025 at 18:09:20 Might go for a back 3 but probably 4-5-1 / 4-2-3-1 again. I'd like to see Beto, Lindstrom and Patterson – but this is complicated by the fact we might be trying to sell Beto and Patterson. I wouldn't be surprised if O'Brien lines up at right-back. Billy Shears 33 Posted 18/01/2025 at 18:14:57 I'd go 5-3-2...PickfordPatterson O'BrienKeane BranthawaiteMykolenkoArmstrong Mangala Lindstrom BetoNdiaye Mike Connolly 34 Posted 18/01/2025 at 18:24:05 Billy @33,Your team is half-decent. Sean Kearns 35 Posted 18/01/2025 at 18:25:11 If Dom starts, I'll have an aneurysm!! He is the root of all our problems… he doesn't link play, come deep, run channels, put crosses in, play 1-2's, take free kicks, get assists, take people on, or lead the lads (not captain material in any way), or score goals!! I could forgive the fact that he does fuck all if he scored a load — but he doesn't!! We have never finished in the top half of the table with Dom as our number 9… we play with 10 men every single game and this is why we lose so many!!! It's clear to see!!! He doesn't come deep and play football with the lads… ever, like ever!! Has anyone ever seen Dom knock it around and play triangles with any of our team? Ever, even once? He never comes back and helps midfield pass it around and make space for Ndiaye or the wingers or Doucoure to run in behind. And does anyone ever remember him getting an assist or playing someone in? What the actual fuck does he do? Bill Fairfield 36 Posted 18/01/2025 at 18:31:30 I am expecting a slight improvement on the usual dross.Hopefully we'll get something. Les Callan 37 Posted 18/01/2025 at 18:34:42 It's about time someone gave a real honest opinion of him, Sean. Edward Rogers 38 Posted 18/01/2025 at 18:35:34 You don't rate him then, Sean?Wasn't sure for a minute. Brian Hennessy 39 Posted 18/01/2025 at 18:40:12 PickfordO'Brien Tarkowski BranthwaitePatterson MykolenkoLindstrøm Gueye MangalaNdiayeKeane Sean Kearns 40 Posted 18/01/2025 at 18:49:36 Oh, and he's always offside!!!!!!!!!!Forgot to get that in... David West 41 Posted 18/01/2025 at 18:57:47 I think Harrison would be better suited to wing back myself. He's no good one-on-one and rarely beats a man. He does run though! But if he was the over lapping wingback, maybe he could produce a few crosses. I'm trying to think of ways to change the shape with the people available. Patterson, Beto, Lindstrom & Harrison are the realistic changes possible. I can't see him changing all 4. I'd like to see 3-5-2 but I'm expecting the same formation, probably with Lindstrøm for Harrison, possibly Beto. He needs to be bold and try to change something, break the cycle, tell them it's not good enough. Losing trying to have a go is better, in my opinion. Derek Knox 42 Posted 18/01/2025 at 19:06:23 David @41, "He does run though!"So does diarrhoea, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it! :-) Dennis Stevens 43 Posted 18/01/2025 at 19:14:51 I see former Spurs midfielder Garry Brooke has died - only 64. Frank McGregor 44 Posted 18/01/2025 at 19:38:06 Would it be possible for someone to get Kluivert the Bournemouth player's phone number for Calvert-Lewin so he could call him and find out how to score goals? We need to find a goal from somewhere tomorrow. Jim Wilson 45 Posted 18/01/2025 at 19:44:05 Jack @ 2 – I like your team apart from Harrison. I'm Going with 4-5-1:PickfordDixon Tarkowski Branthwaite MykolenkoPatterson Gueye Mangala Garner (or Armstrong) NdiayeCalvert-Lewin or Beto or Doucoure up top.I don't want to see Young and Harrison. Or Doucoure anywhere in midfield but he could cause problems as a forward with his effort and hit-or-miss play. Liam Mogan 46 Posted 18/01/2025 at 19:49:45 Having watched U21s last night, selecting Dixon would be a massive risk. Ray Said 47 Posted 18/01/2025 at 19:56:15 Ndiaye needs to be behind the striker for me. He is wasted acting as Mykolenko's auxiliary. He battles for the ball, presses well, holds the ball up, can dribble and pass and is the one player in the team that has the ability to do something with the ball when he has it. That one small change would make us more threatening in my view. Rob Dolby 48 Posted 18/01/2025 at 20:07:09 I can't see many changes in the line up given the weakness of the squad.I would go with 4 hard workers in the middle and play Ndiaye behind Beto.PickfordPatterson Tarkowski Branthwaite MykolemkoDoucoure Mangala Gana Armstrong Ndiaye BetoI reckon there will be goals in this game, Spurs play wide open and attack a lot. I just hope it's us that scores.I didn't want to pick Harrison, Lindstrom or Doucoure but we haven't got anyone else who can play in the midfield so I went with Doucoure for his athleticism. Splitting hairs I know, let's face it, we are pretty shite. Jim Wilson 49 Posted 18/01/2025 at 20:09:54 Rob @ 48 - I would be happy with that team. It looks solid. Denver Daniels 50 Posted 18/01/2025 at 20:42:34 Addition by subtraction is a real thing. Take Doucoure and Harrison out of this team and it's instantly better. Lindstrom in the middle and Patterson wide right. Everyone else as before. Robert Williams 51 Posted 18/01/2025 at 20:51:22 Sean 40. Did you say he wasn't a dribbler? I would contest that, as the front of his shirt is covered in it – always. Jerome Shields 52 Posted 18/01/2025 at 21:05:51 It will be interesting to see what changes Moyes makes. Dave Lynch 53 Posted 18/01/2025 at 21:15:36 I've said it before – Calvert-Lewin is stealing a living.Sean summed him up perfectly. Problem is... he thinks he's worth more than he is. Danny O'Neill 54 Posted 18/01/2025 at 21:27:20 Still a lot to play for and points to be won.I don't care who is playing as long as they fight for Everton. This is not the time to feel sorry for themselves. Show spirit and go for it. Do not fear anyone. The supporters will respect that. There is no reason we can't win. Winston Williamson 55 Posted 18/01/2025 at 21:32:11 I'd go with Frank's team @10… Lindstrom needs to play deeper and we need to look to break fast. Spurs play a very high line and are short on pace at the back. Matt Byrne 56 Posted 18/01/2025 at 21:42:58 We all need a lift. If Broja is sent back, we have a freed-up domestic loan. Surely, there is mileage in bringing Richarlison in? Spurs look to move him on, save wages and put him in the shop window. If he scores a few, his value goes back up. We get a huge lift, some goals and passion. He could do what super Kev did in 99. The crowd is flat, this would really ignite the atmosphere. I know he's not done the business at Spurs and he's been injured but some players just click at certain clubs. Seems a no-brainer to me! COYB! Rob Halligan 57 Posted 18/01/2025 at 21:45:23 Matt, Ive read reports that Richarlison wants to quit Spurs, but unfortunately move to Saudi Arabia. Surely hes better than that? And besides, Paul Hewitt wouldnt allow us to sign him, especially if hes been injured! 🤣🤣 Rob Hooton 58 Posted 18/01/2025 at 23:27:15 A couple of my best mates are Spurs fans, as is my boss and a few colleagues. As such, this fixture has been horrendous for quite some time – a shocking recent record against them.As their defence is so shaky, I hope we can finally take advantage and score some goals. I'm not confident but they are very beatable this season. Will be watching nervously. Sean Kearns 59 Posted 19/01/2025 at 02:14:43 Richarlison just posted a video from Goodison Park on his TikTok!!! He's literally telling us he wants to come back!!! This is mental, fucking make it happen! Derek Knox 60 Posted 19/01/2025 at 04:35:31 Sean, A sign, a sign, did he mention anything about the meek, or the cheesemakers? :-)I'd have him back in a heartbeat, seriously though! Paul Ferry 61 Posted 19/01/2025 at 05:56:24 Sean, if you told me my name was Paul I would not believe you. Martin Mason 62 Posted 19/01/2025 at 07:13:15 I was just trying to pick a decent team for today's game… but nobody in the squad was good enough to get in it. Derek Thomas 63 Posted 19/01/2025 at 07:22:01 Martin Mason @ 62; Everton in a nut shell.I predict 10-4... Jimmy Harris, you are duly avenged. Nigel Scowen 64 Posted 19/01/2025 at 07:41:52 A real Dogs of War attitude today from Everton will get us over the line.A crucial 1-0 and a 4-point gap over the Bottom 3. Paul Birmingham 65 Posted 19/01/2025 at 07:43:58 Billy, I think that's a good starting line-up, I reckon he will start Young, for Patterson, but let's see.Spurs are very good or very bad... That's from a long-standing work colleague season-ticket holder, and he reckons their camp is fractured. But regardless – believe, believe and believe, and Everton can beat them. The 2012 2-1 come back was one of them brilliant Sundays.Today, Everton can win.UTFTs! Jonathan Tasker 66 Posted 19/01/2025 at 08:01:07 I'm going for a repeat of that great FA Cup semi-final where we beat them 4-1.Ange gets sacked on Monday! Mark Andersson 67 Posted 19/01/2025 at 08:06:34 Pissin in the wind if you think we will beat Spurs. Moyes looked shell-shocked after his first game defeat… There's hoping, then there is reality. Moyes is no saviour; Dyche got it right at the start of the season with his prediction that we will struggle. He knows more than anyone on this forum. Danny Baily 68 Posted 19/01/2025 at 08:06:37 More hope than expectation, but we need a win today. It has to be a win. This is our chance. John Keating 69 Posted 19/01/2025 at 08:17:49 3-5-2 — We need to cut off Maddison and Son:PickfordO'Brien, Tarkowski, BranthwaitePatterson, Gana, Armstrong, Mangala, YoungNdiaye, Calvert-Lewin or Beto Dave Abrahams 70 Posted 19/01/2025 at 08:41:14 If anyone wants the crowd to really get behind this team, then Moyes and the team he picks will have to start the ball rolling by having a go from the off without leaving themselves wide open at the same time. We've all seen the crowd fully motivated well before the game kicks off; then, at the start of the game, they quickly become deflated as they see what's being offered on the field.Aston Villa with Duncan Ferguson in charge after Benitez got his comics and P45, finished 1-0 to Villa with Everton huffing and puffing and doing little to rouse the game was one example — there have been more…As Danny (54) says, the team has to show fight and spirit from the off, without leaving themselves the instigation coming from Moyes and his staff in the dressing room before the game, then we will pick up from that fight and get right behind them.In other words, earn your fuckin' well overpaid bleedin' wages! Ged Simpson 71 Posted 19/01/2025 at 08:41:38 As I fight to stay optimistic, your opening line made me smile, Mark @67."Pissin in the wond"Spent last 10 mins ignoring family as I searched Google to see the clever football related joke that this play on wordswas.Got nowhere and realised you meant wind and I relapsed to join you in pessimism. We live in hope though mate. Derek Knox 72 Posted 19/01/2025 at 09:22:50 Ged @ 71, didn't Bob Dylan have a song like that ?The answer my friend is 'pissin in the wond'. :-) Charles Ward 73 Posted 19/01/2025 at 09:25:05 Solanke is a big miss for them. A more than decent goal scorer with excellent hold-up play. Even without him, they do have some attacking talent but their defence is bad. With our defence and their attack, we'd be comfortably mid-table. Mind you any midfield with the geriatric duo of Gana and Duke would still be a nightmare.I'd forecast a 1-1 – both sides nervous and clumsy. Kevin Edward 74 Posted 19/01/2025 at 09:27:44 Again this week, it's been a nervous watch out for other teams' results, and luckily none of our rivals have prospered, leaving us somehow still clear of the drop zone.Today, we urgently need to help ourselves, the record at home vs Tottenham is poor, but there's an opportunity here to take all 3 points. Also today I think we learn whether Moyes is likely to improve us, or if we are destined to huff and puff to another nail-biting April and May.No doubt Tottenham will be up for this one, I just hope that our bunch are too. It's hard to predict that we will score (at all) so it will have to be just 1-0 to the Toffees, I don't care who scores, maybe an own goal will do.But Tottenham have goals in them, so it's going to be tough to keep them out for 95+ minutes. Moyes may need a miracle. Andy Meighan 75 Posted 19/01/2025 at 09:46:35 Mark @67."Dyche knows more than anyone on this forum" — I don't really think that's strictly true.He didn't know how to play a left-footed winger on the left, or a predominately right-footed player on the right, did he? No, it was the usual square pegs in round holes.I'm no lover of Harrison by any means but he's never had a run on the left because your beloved Sean had to accommodate McNeil, and when he moved him to the No 10 role he threw Ndiaye out there. If Moyes has got any balls, and I doubt he has, he'd drop Doucoure today and play Armstrong there… or Lindstrøm — another who has been criminally played out of position. These managers and coaches complicate the game by trying to be smart; "Football," as Clough once said, "is a simple game." "Play to your strengths" is the phrase, isn't it?So, no — Dyche might have known the inner workings of the club better than anyone, but he sure as hell didn't haven't a clue how to set a team up.In fact, I heard they were looking at a chimpanzee in Knowsley Safari Park to take charge before the Dour One got the gig. John Dingle 76 Posted 19/01/2025 at 09:55:58 Andy at 8, you forgot the “hardworking” Lampard. I'd like to forget all of them, especially the waiter. Colin Glassar 77 Posted 19/01/2025 at 10:04:29 PickfordO'Brien Tarkowski Branthwaite PattersonMykolenko LindstromMangala GueyeNdiayeCalvert-Lewin3-5-1. 6-0. Get in!! Joe McMahon 78 Posted 19/01/2025 at 10:10:16 Colin, have you been drinking again? Kunal Desai 79 Posted 19/01/2025 at 10:14:24 The reverse fixture back in August was absolutely embarrassing against an average team. Show some pride, spirit and determination and get the 3 points here. Alan Cox 80 Posted 19/01/2025 at 10:14:51 I'm a long-suffering toffee who has not been to the game since the 2-0 debacle against Norwich. I do have a ticket for the Southampton game just to remember the good times. My first game was Davie Johnson, 1-0 against them and many more exciting games. (Yes, 'excitement' was a thing at Goodison Park!) Now I have no hope for todays game -as Éomer said ‘… do not trust hope – it has foresaken these lands'.Maybe Leicester will lend us a stick to lean on… Iain Johnston 81 Posted 19/01/2025 at 10:21:29 We don't need 5 at the back with 2 defensive midfielders. I thought the Dyche days were over?To score goals, we have to stop playing with one isolated forward who gets next to zero service and ends up all over the pitch simply to get a touch of the ball.Mykolenko is a stopper, that's all he has; he's no Baines or Digne – asking him to do a similar job is pointless.Okay, I agree, Young isn't ideal but he's still one of the most technically astute players we have and can use both feet.We have to get at Spurs as they concede, they've lost more games than we have.We need to play 3-4-1-2 for me, we have the players for it and the players to adapt to differing formations:O'Brien, Tarkowsski, Branthwaite.Patterson, Gana, Mangala, Young.Lindstrom.Ndiaye, Calvert-Lewin. Kunal Desai 82 Posted 19/01/2025 at 10:28:38 Just to add Solanke is out for Spurs along with Johnson and Bissouma. They have an entire team out; we have to capitalise despite the possibility of Richarlison starting for them. Brian Harrison 83 Posted 19/01/2025 at 10:29:14 The fact that Leicester before yesterday had lost 6 on the bounce and we were only a point ahead of them with a game in hand just shows what a mess Moyes has inherited. There were a few signs against Villa that he is trying to get us to be more proactive, but with such a scarcity of goals from the front 4 that's difficult to achieve. Far easier for a manager to go into a team that scores but leak goals than a team that just cant score to save their lives. I am sure Moyes is looking at every option to change that whether its a change of tactics or buying a couple of players in this window. But we need to bring in the right couple of players. We have seen Dyche and Thelwell bring in some supposedly attacking players that just hasnt worked, Danjuma, Harrison, Beto, Lindstrom, Broja and Chermetti.Today Spurs will play there usual high line and the one thing that easily unlocks a high defensive line is pace, unfortunately we don't have any. I am sure Moyes will try and get this team on the front foot from the first whistle, but with confidence in our front players very low it wont be easy today. Seems now he is coming back from injury it would be typical of Everton for Richarlison to score the winner. I see he posted a picture of him playing for us, I think he would love to come back but cant see any circumstances in which that could happen. Just hoping and praying we can somehow get 3 points which would be a massive lift for fans, players and the manager. Robert Tressell 84 Posted 19/01/2025 at 10:32:03 With the various injuries etc and the limitations in the squad, I don't think there's a perfect formation / personnel for us at the moment. The most important things, however we set up are:- good attitude, concentration, organisation and hard work; - more imaginative set pieces than the high looping ball the back stick; and - better link up play between the full-backs and wide midfielders / wing-forwards to get crosses into the box.Dyche did okay with the first of those but couldn't deliver the latter two. I hope Moyes has been working on that very hard in training.Moyes will also have a dilemma about whether to press very high or not. Spurs give up a lot of chances / goals by knocking the ball about their own 18 yard box (and even 6 yard box) - but if they break our press we'd be instantly exposed. I suspect Moyes will not take too many chances with this - but we might pick and choose our moments to catch them out. Anthony Flack 85 Posted 19/01/2025 at 10:40:04 We need a lift from the startId suggest not starting Harrison (ever) Doucoure, or Calvert Lewin constitutes a major boost, as at least well start with 11 v 11.Against Villa - We are too easily bullied and harassed, Villa were too tough, rough and determined especially at our corners, and we and the ref let them get away with itCurrently freezing at Keele Services COYB Edward Rogers 86 Posted 19/01/2025 at 10:46:50 As John Keating @69 says, we have to get a grip of Maddison. He seems to have the freedom of the park whenever he plays against us. Give him time and space and he looks a very good player. Get stuck in hard and early. Colin Glassar 87 Posted 19/01/2025 at 10:48:07 Joe 78, whenever I feel we are on a hiding to none we seem to pull out a shock result. Remember when we thrashed Brighton at their place or, beat the rs 2-0 to end their title dreams? We may not win 6-0 but a scrappy 1-0 is doable. Eddie Dunn 88 Posted 19/01/2025 at 10:55:25 Kevin -therin lies the problem "Tottenham do have goals in them" and we don't.Their defence is dodgy and Dragusin is always prone to a heavy tackle or an error. However they have much better players. A point should not be sniffed at. Charles Ward 89 Posted 19/01/2025 at 11:01:04 Andy 75 and didnt Paisley say something like ‘ Just stick the ball in the back of the net and then well talk tactics.Looking at the Spurs absentees I can see us getting a result today. 2-1 no idea who scores but Ill bet at least one from a corner. Rob Dolby 91 Posted 19/01/2025 at 11:12:26 Andy 75,Where did the right footed Henry play for arsenal, France and Barca.Where does the left footed sala play for the shite.Dyche knows more about football than you or I ever will.If you hadn't noticed we have had to weaken the squad year on year. The club has taken chances on loanees and cheaper players and it generally has worked out. We have stayed in the division. The football was been terrible long before Dyche showed up.We now have the latest fire fighter in place who has already stated that he isn't a magician in his presser after the last game. Get used to square pegs and round holes as that is what makes up the entire squad. We all know we are crying out for better players, are we going to get them? Probably not judging on the previous 5 years. Are we going to continue to be work man like at best, given the current manager and restrictions very probably yes.Today's game or in fact any game involving us will be a scrappy affair, I just hope Beto plays instead of DCL. The young CBS of spurs won't have an easier day if DCL starts.Coyb Rob Hooton 93 Posted 19/01/2025 at 11:22:56 I hope McNeill is back soon, he seems to be the only player in the team that can take a decent corner or free kick - and he can cross the ball too, something sorely lacking. Our set pieces since he has been out have been woeful and weve barely troubled any team with them. The deliveries from Young (since he scored against Wolves) have been awful. Stephen Davies 94 Posted 19/01/2025 at 11:32:45 Rob.I think there's more to McNeils absence than his knee injury. His Instagram always had him and his Missus on there doesn't seem to be the case anymore. Raymond Fox 95 Posted 19/01/2025 at 11:45:45 They are making us favs which I'm a little surprised by, 11/8 Everton, 8/5 Spurs, 9/5 the draw. It's swings and roundabouts, push further up field with the same players and you are likely to concede more goals, that's the gamble. If Dyche had been in charge of the Villa game ,we might have come away with a draw. They score for fun, so how do you line up today? Do you go for the win and risk conceding plenty, or shut up shop?As I say, it's swings and roundabouts. Ajay Gopal 96 Posted 19/01/2025 at 11:47:42 I would go with Iain's (81) team, excepting playing Armstrong instead of Lindstrom (3-4-3):PickfordO'Brien Tarkowski BranthwaitePatterson Mangala Gueye YoungArmstrong Calvert-Lewin NdiayeSubs: Beto, Lindstrom, Harrison, Doucoure, Mykolenko, Keane, VirginiaOut: Garner, Coleman, Iroegbunam, McNeil, Broja, Chermiti Ged Simpson 97 Posted 19/01/2025 at 12:15:05 This is sad. More pessimistic (go back to #71).And as saddo, found this."Wond is an obsolete Middle English word that means "wound" or "injury"Bugger.Attempt to cheer us up! Passing time.I am trying. (Over to you with that last line!) Tom Bowers 98 Posted 19/01/2025 at 12:18:24 With the available squad it doesn't really matter who starts unless they all perform well and get the win.Everyone has had their chances and only 3 or four have been consistent and that includes the keeper.Even though Spurs are below their best they will of course be up for a game against us.We need some luck for once !! Derek Knox 99 Posted 19/01/2025 at 12:18:54 Ged, hope you haven't 'wonded' our hopes with that revelation ! :-) Liam Mogan 100 Posted 19/01/2025 at 12:31:17 Derek 72 - Neil Young has a more apt one.'You're all just pissin' in the windYou don't know it but you areAnd there ain't nothin' like a friendWho can tell you you're just pissin' in the wind' - Ambulance Blues I hum this in the Top Balcony Derek Knox 101 Posted 19/01/2025 at 12:36:47 Liam, 👍💙 feeling better about today, but that may change when I see the team.
