Everton take on David Moyes's old team for the first time since his return to Goodison Park, as we move one step closer to the end of an era with this Saturday afternoon Premier League mid-table clash.

After Everton, it's West Ham where Moyes has spent the longest time in his managerial career, albeit in two spells since 2017, until he left last Summer. West Ham have already sacked his successor, Julen Lopetegui, but they still languish in mid-table under Graham Potter, sitting below Everton on goal difference. They were defeated 1-0 by Newcastle United earlier this week.

Meanwhile, Moyes has gone almost to the top of the form table in the Premier League as he looks to extend The Toffees' unbeaten run to a remarkable 9 games at the expense of his bubble-blowing alumni.

But he must go into this match still handicapped by the absence of key players — some of whom have yet to play for him, like Dwight McNeil, who has now been out for 3 months with a knee injury. Illiman Ndiaye was thought to be getting closer to a return; Moyes said: “Iliman is doing much better. He's not running yet, but he's certainly improving from his injury” — but he won't be playing again until next month.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Orel Mangala are both the victims of long-term injuries, while Armando Broja may be closer to a return this weekend, having featured in photos of full training with the rest of the squad.

Moyes said: "Broja is in and around it. It's a bit like Youssef [Chermiti] and Seamus [Coleman], who have had another 5 or 6 days of training, whereas Broja is just back in amongst it. He's just getting closer but hopefully we'll be able to get him on the bench for tomorrow's game.”

However, Moyes has at least turned a corner with this tsunami of injuries: there were no young players just making up the number on the subs bench last weekend against Wolves.

Not that Moyes was ever likely to even consider them while he still believed Everton's place in next season's Premier League remained in any doubt. Hopefully that view may change this weekend — as long as the likes of Bowen, Soucek and Kudus don't do us the damage we know they are capable of!

West Ham will be without Michail Antonio after his car crash in January.  Niclas Fullkrug is also out with a persistent hamstring injury. And Vladimir Coufal is a doubt for this game.

Kick-Off: 3 pm GMT, Saturday, 15 March 2025
Referee:
Darren Bond.
Assistants:
Dan Robathan, Marc Perry.
Fourth official:
Ruebyn Ricardo.
Video Assistant Referee:
 Chris Kavanagh.
Assistant VAR: Scott Ledger.

With all the injuries, the team virtually picks itself, the only question is who makes way for Alcaraz.

I thought the press conference was Thursday for a Saturday match… or have I got that wrong?

Hi, desperately looking for 1 or 2 tickets for West Ham for myself and my brother. We have flights booked from Ireland but couldn't get tickets through our club membership.

Our final pilgrimage to the Grand Old Lady!

Can't see this will be an easy game by any means, with 2 managers trying to make a point for differing reasons.

Hopefully, we can continue our good form and pick up another 3 points. Agree Alcaraz should start.

Alcaraz for Douc… and I’m a Douc fan. I think his energy is second to non and he chips in with goals but there’s no room for sentiment in elite sports and it’s part the reason we are in this mess… Alcaraz is better than Douc so 1+1 =2… and gives us a more decent bench too. A fresh Douc coming on at 60-70 minutes can sprint around constantly with a goal threat.

This day and age, even this half of the season, if we can't beat West Ham at home, then they should all be docked a week's wages. It should be a by-the-book home cert.

Yes, I know all the cliches; football's a funny old game, there's no easy games in the Premier League, etc, etc.

It's West Ham for fuck's sake; 2-0 minimum.

Many probably already know if you follow the Everton Heritage Society on social media, but if you're making the trip to Goodison tomorrow and have time, amongst the usual exhibitions, Paul Power and Martin will be upstairs in St Luke's promoting books.

Alcaraz starting ahead of Doucoure would give us a more attacking threat, and hopefully Broja on the bench would give us an extra option if Beto is not up to scratch.

A win would keep us flying and put extra pressure on Potter.

I think the likes of Lindstrom or Harrison could make way for Alcaraz, both aren't impacting games enough.

We could put Doucs or Garner right mid and let Alcaraz play attacking centre mid.

West ham played well and were unlucky against Newcastle a clear foul not given for the Newcastle winner. They are struggling without a striker.

I think we will edge this 2-1.

I nearly wrote something about there being a possible interest for Everton fans in Barry Ferguson, the young Brighton striker who is on loan at West Ham.

Seems he's only got on the field as a sub four times under Potter since he joined in January, totalling only 90 minutes. Prior to his switch, he was sidelined for a month with an ankle injury.

I'm also reading that an earlier ankle problem, one that required surgery, meant he was a late arrival into pre-season training under new Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler.

Seems a strange move that he would go to another Premier League club on loan… but I guess from The Hammers' perspective, he was a good prospect as a quick step-in for Antonio.

Regardless, is there really any interest from Everton in this saga? Injury-prone… isn't that the old transfer model in action that we are (hopefully) moving away from?

Rob # 24……funny how we all see things differently when watching a match. I actually thought West Ham were piss poor on Monday night against the skunk maggots. Apart from a sitter from Soucek in the first minute West Ham posed no threat to TSM all match. I thought there was no urgency about them, and they only showed a bit of urgency when the board went up for the six added minutes at the end of the second half, but even then they didn’t threaten.

As I said on Monday night, if we can’t beat these then we really are on the beach for the summer holidays.

You would like to think so Michael. A new strategy rather than just getting back and shopping at Poundland or rummaging around TK Max.

Rob @24, it was mentioned a few weeks ago that Doucoure could play on the right. For me, Garner has always looked better in a central role.

I don't know much about Ferguson, but would like to think we are going to cast our net further afield.

We are safe Colin, but I will more comfortable with at least one more win. We'll get more than that anyway.

I think Evan Ferguson was a lad who caused a lot of interest when he first appeared for Brighton but hasn’t done a lot since, maybe injuries have spoiled his progress since that start, he hasn’t played a lot this season again maybe through injuries.

Anyone seen the England squad, selected by Thomas Tuchel? Jordan Henderson is in the squad…..WTF is that all about? No Jarrad Branthwaite, but Quansah from the RS is in who I don’t think has played much this season. 32 year old Dan Burn makes any England squad for the first time as he can play at either centre back or full back. Doesn’t JB do that?
Rob Dolby
36 Posted 14/03/2025 at 09:33:00
Rob 30, Yep it's a game of opinions, I just thought west ham played well but didn't have a striker to link play up for kudus or Bowen.

Just seen the England squad, normally I am pretty ambivalent about the whole England thing but Branthwaite not getting a call up over the likes of Colewell, konsa or 32 year old Dan Burn is a piss take.

He has recently given an interview to the bbc saying how gutted he was at not getting picked for the euros. I just hope the reality of the situation doesn't drive him away.

As soon as he signs for anyone else he will be an automatic pick for England.

I am sure David Moyes would love to put one over on his ex-employers. It was good to see Broja is back in full training and he may get a few minutes of game time.

I read that media reports from Argentina are suggesting that the contract to enable us to sign Alcaraz at the agreed fee, he has to start 6 games or play 45 minutes in 6 games; should this be correct, it will be interesting to see if he is selected enough to make the agreed deal possible.

There was also a suggestion that Everton might not play him in the required number of games so they can actually get him cheaper at the end of the loan, but the report said that also may alert other teams to put in rival bids.

My biggest concern for Saturday is that Chris Sutton has predicted that we will win 2:1. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first time he has predicted an Everton win since Moyes took over. I'm superstitious in such things so hope it's not a curse.

The main reason why Ferguson went to West Ham is because he was well known to Potter. Has been hampered by injuries in the last year so there is a question mark there but that is a question for the medical staff.

Don't fully agree Danny, Ferguson for me is exactly the type of player we should be looking at: young, good finisher in the right format.

With the rebuild Everton need, we should be looking at young players with high potential. That gives us the budget for buying more players.

I wasn't saying don't look at Ferguson, Neil, that's not my job. He well be the type of player we should be looking at. My point was more aimed at the hope that our recruitment and scouting structure is going to change and we uncover hidden gems.

What happened to Robert Tressel's article. I was going to respond, but can't find it now.

Don't start me on England. I don't really care for it, so don't get excited about it.

My focus is on Everton.

Us 3, them 1. Beto will score. Charly please, otherwise 2-1.

Garner needs to step up; Gana is the main man. Jarrad needs to start playing like he's worthy of. Madrid's interest in his so far inconsistent season. That said, I don't mind a below par Branthwaite as he will be a rolls royce at the Dock.

We have been much better to watch as compared to Dyche but we are still drawing and not winning these matches. I understand we don't have a big squad and there are injuries but some of the games we played especially Brentford game we should have won that comfortably. If we want to progress as a team we have to take our chances. Win against Hammers pushes away from the bottom three even further. Hope we win this 2-0

Nigel @53, Everton are probably a different proposition now with the new owners at the helm. I used to worry when our former Chairman was involved in negotiations, but I just sense that the new regime will not stand for Everton being bent over and drive a hard bargain.

Brian @37, does added time count? If so, we've had plenty of that lately, much to my nerves and heart's discontent!!!

Brian and others, we've got Alcaraz on an extremely low cost deal. Getting him or anyone of his calibre this summer for the £15m option to buy is a steal. Hopefully its not true and we're just acclimatising a player who needs help getting his career back on track.

Another ‘you just don’t know until the day’ team.

Too many draws means we’ve still got some ‘running to make the bus’ and if it’s still not sorted then the imminent trip to Mordor will be an even more annoying experience!

Hopefully enough of the players will have next to nothing to do during the international break so that they are determined to give it all for the win today.

Poor Jarrad. It seems the lad is perhaps so good that people aren’t even aware of it. Yes, he makes the odd mistake (which young player doesn’t?) but it appears to me he is so in control of most situations that I have to wonder if people aren’t noticing that it is his anticipation/ manoeuvring that is giving him the edge, not dumb luck.

Here’s hoping he is imperious and faultless today, giving an apt ‘salute’ to Tuchel and providing the bedrock for an invigorating win.

Come on, you indefatigable Bluuuees!!!

That we could sit simply in that room again
Ten thousand dollars at the drop of a hat
I'd give it all gladly if our lives could be like that”

Hey, it's me, I'm dynamite and I don't know why
And you shall take me strongly in your arms again
And I will not remember that I even felt the pain”

See you all later - - somewhere in This Blue Heaven :

“Starry-eyed an’ laughing as I recall when we were caught
Trapped by no track of hours for they hanged suspended
As we listened one last time an’ we watched with one last look
Spellbound an’ swallowed ’til the tolling ended
Tolling for the aching ones whose wounds cannot be nursed
For the countless confused, accused, misused, strung-out ones an’ worse
An’ for every hung-up person in the whole wide universe
An’ we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing”

Your friend - - with a firm handshake - - George.

What can we say about David Moyes.

Many of us were miffed when he left us for Man Utd and, although he didn't win us anything, we were at least competitive without much funding.

After that, a succession of high-priced managers failed miserably and we almost dropped into the Championship.

We are on the cusp of a new era and, although we are still not world beater,s he has installed an air of resilience in the squad despite injuries to some key players.

Given the right funding, it could see next season as a resurgence for our beloved Blues.

Brilliant, George, I hope you enjoy the day, so much love of today for you.

You took me back as a nipper, I stood in front of the old Main Stand in 1963 and watched the league trophy raised high.

In years to come, I would frequent the Babalou, the Beachcomer, The Hanover and eat at the Golden Phoenix or Bernie's at the Pier Head, would enjoy the Royal Iris dance cruises on a Saturday night.

I bought my first love a lemon Ben Sherman with the pleat sewn in...

Today, it's West Ham, but for you it's much more, it's the satisfaction of just being there... the love shines through.

Soak it all in, George, I bet there will be a spring in your step and a tear in your eye. Well done, sir, bloody well done!! You deserve every damn minute of today!!!

That's me inspired, George.

Let's have the Blues do those fine words justice. 💙

Big game today. I hope DM has enough analysis in his mind about West Ham to ensure a clean sheet and at least a couple of Blues goals.

I go 2 - 0 to the Toffees. Beto (through ball and a drop of the left shoulder and a pass in to the net) and a direct shot from the right by Lindstrom.

George (@59),

Ain't life grand George when you can get out of bed and get yourself ready and look forward to a great day with old and new friends and a 4-0 win for Everton today!

Especially for you, George, as Christine says (@62), you deserve it, every damn minute of it.

Stop that swearing, Christine!

Great memories, George. I remember the first match my Dad took me to at Goodison in '63. Wonderful times.

Wish I was going today. I hope the boys win. Enjoy the day, Evertonians, wherever you are.

Well this is my last game at Goodison.

I flew in from Israel yesterday whilst my lad flew in from Denver.

Long time since I've been to the Old Lady. Had to say farewell.

All my youth was here. First game in 1960. We lost. Hope to go out with a win today.

George #59. What a post! The most uplifting article I have ever had the pleasure and privilege to read.

Enjoy your day, Blueman, your words have filled my entire being with the pride of being a Blue among all of you, journeymen, storytellers all of you.

God bless you, George, and all who have made our Family what it is today. COYB

Superb post as always, George. So pleased you are going today. We are on our way too.

Well that has certainly put a positive spin on today. Thank you, George. A true Blue 💙

George, what a lift I had when I saw your name on the header. You've been sorely missed.

I went to see my first game in 1954 with a gang of mates from
Tocky Tech. Ian Callister et al. Like Saul on the road to Tarsus, I was struck by the Blue Bolt and converted ever since.

You've never been away but welcome back.
