Season › 2024-25 › News The puzzling questions over game time for Charly Alcaraz The Rumour Mill 19/03/2025 36comments | Jump to last Some of the football played by Charly Alcaraz for Everton since he finally became fit enough to play has been scintillating. But many observers are monitoring exactly how many playing opportunities he is getting in the context of presumed knowledge about certain details of the loan agreement with Flamengo. Everton reportedly have the option to make the transfer permanent at the end of the season should Alcaraz play a high threshold of games during his loan spell, although the Echo claims the the exact number has not been confirmed. The transfer fee Everton would pay for the player would reportedly be in the region of £15M. However, Torcida Flamengo report (via Sport Witness) that, when the midfielder joined Everton on loan at the end of the January transfer window, the deal included an obligation to buy for £15M in the summer if he plays 45 minutes in at least 8 games. But it is reported that there has been increasing concern at Flamengo this won’t happen as Alcaraz has been rotated in and out by David Moyes since joining the Toffees. Flamengo technical director Jose Bota has been speaking in an interview with journalist Venê Casagrande, in which the Alcaraz situation was discussed: "I can't predict the future, but I'm convinced he'll stay in England," he said. "Either at Everton or at another club, because we've had enquiries from other clubs since he arrived in England. He’s an excellent player for that type of game. "I think it's unlikely he'll return to Flamengo, because he'll certainly have a market in the Premier League. Then people say: 'He's good enough in the Premier League but not for Flamengo'. Things are not like that. "Especially because, for me, Flamengo is much better than 70% of the teams in the Premier League. But the style of play that Flamengo has, has little to do with most of the teams in the Premier League." This is being portrayed by a number of clickbait sites as a 'warning' to Everton about not assuming they can manipulate the situation somehow in their favour, for negotiating a lower fee. With 9 games remaining, and trusting that Alcaraz remains match fit, there appears to plenty of scope for the conditions to be either met or not met. Disclaimer () Paul Hewitt 1 Posted 19/03/2025 at 12:13:45 I can see us losing out to some other Premier League team on signing Alcaraz. Just pay the money now. Dermot O'Brien 3 Posted 19/03/2025 at 12:27:17 Agree Paul, £15M is nothing for a player like him. Alan J Thompson 4 Posted 19/03/2025 at 12:50:34 If these conditions are true then it looks like we have no confidence in our scouting dept or on any sort of expected transfer kitty and staying within PSR limits.Or is it just Everton buying on the never-never again, similar to Beto and Chermiti? Ian Bennett 5 Posted 19/03/2025 at 12:52:09 This is a non-story.If he plays 45 minutes in at least 8 games...That's not a problem, is it? He's got that in 3 games already. 5 games in 9 matches shouldn't be an issue. Michael Kenrick 7 Posted 19/03/2025 at 13:03:51 That was my thinking too when I read it, Ian. I like him. I think he's the most exciting prospect we have so far — such a pity that late shot vs West Ham screwed wide of the goal. Eugene Ruane 8 Posted 19/03/2025 at 13:10:15 .Maybe former investment banker (rhyming slang?) Stefan Borson – bullshit football 'stories' writer and king of the 'pointless' single inverted comma – can answer some of these questions. After all, he seems to have a fucking obsession with Everton and producing Everton-related shite."Real Mardid wear 'football shirts' and so do Everton" – Stefan Borson."Possible friction at Everton as some 'squad players' prefer extra mature Cheddar to the regular mature cheddar in their sandwiches" – Stefan Borson."If you combine the words 'ever' and 'ton' you get Everton, who..er...may be chased for compensation by Burnley. Or not, I don't really know tbh." - Stefan Borson."New Everton CEO in 'Bishop and model' sensation! Angus Kinnear recently lost a Bishop from his chess set and in the same week, made an Airfix model of a Spitfire." – Stefan Borson.Etc, blah, waffle, ad infinitum[What the fuck is wrong with me? Why the fuck do I look at that NewsNow link?] Dave Abrahams 9 Posted 19/03/2025 at 13:26:11 Eugene (8), Why did you start your post with a full stop at the start of it — I'd been trying to rub it out for about five bleedin' minutes before I realised it was a punctuation mark. Could have given my iPad a virus! Mike Hayes 10 Posted 19/03/2025 at 13:43:52 Eugene and Dave - fuckin hell! I hope we keep him and the days of farting around with player deals is the Everton of old, he's a decent attacking player who seems to work well with Beto. Jerome Shields 11 Posted 19/03/2025 at 13:44:10 Moyes needs to play Charly ahead of Doucoure. A no-brainer. Christy Ring 12 Posted 19/03/2025 at 13:49:05 Has to be Moyes's first signing in the summer window, looks a superb talent, especially for £15M. Imagine getting him for the same price as Maupay! Brian Williams 13 Posted 19/03/2025 at 13:55:46 Hmmm. I read after seeking more information that the required appearance number was actually six. Now whether it's six or eight is immaterial to be honest because the number refers to appearances made for the purchase to be mandatory. Not an unusual deal really. You loan a player and if he makes x appearances you have an obligation to buy him. Now one would presume that, if he doesn't make those appearances, that Everton can still buy him at the agreed price. Or does it?If Everton are trying to hold off on the appearances in order to try for a better, reduced price deal, it could well backfire on us. Personally, I don't think this is the case and the story/ies going about are clickbait bullshit. I guess we'll see in due time. Danny O'Neill 14 Posted 19/03/2025 at 14:02:47 Brian, it's 45 minutes, I hope a full 90 can count as two. And if we included added time, we could do the maths and push it over the line. Call it creative accounting!!!Don't dither, Everton. No jibe at Moyes there, just get it done. Tim Marchant 15 Posted 19/03/2025 at 14:09:56 As it looks like Doucouré is going at the end of the season, what advantage is there to play him over Charly Alcaraz, or Tim Iroegbunam and slow their development?Either of them would be a more than qualified replacement for him, with the long-term gain of experience for them, and David Moyes to get more of an evaluation of the players in his squad. Brian Williams 16 Posted 19/03/2025 at 14:26:32 Danny #14,I'm hoping we're not gonna be the Everton of old and a certain amount of professionalism now exists because, if we miss out on Charly through trying to get him on the cheap, it'll be a travesty. Jay Harris 17 Posted 19/03/2025 at 14:39:18 I think we all like the look of Charly but we don't know yet how he will fare with the physicality of the Premier League over the longer term.He certainly has talent and charisma and £15M is nothing for a player these days so he is definitely worth a gamble IMO. Terry Farrell 18 Posted 19/03/2025 at 17:04:28 This lad has got the lot and drives forward with intent and pace and has guile. £15M is a steal and imagine when him and Ndiye click. Sign him first opportunity with no messing around. Let Harrison go back to Leeds; sign Jesper – he has pace and will be a match winner soon! Andrew Merrick 19 Posted 19/03/2025 at 17:17:36 I don't see any gamble in buying him now at that price.Get it done and get onto the next one, we need at least half a dozen players in for pre-season... Derek Knox 20 Posted 19/03/2025 at 17:29:23 We must sign him, it's so clear he adds something different, and apparently he wants to stay with us, which can't be bad! Mike Allison 21 Posted 19/03/2025 at 17:54:53 We should be lining up with a midfield 3 of Garner, Iroegbunam and Alcaraz. There's so much potential there and all we've really got to play for is development for next season. I'd pick a game to drop Tarkowski as well, probably Ipswich at home, to look at O'Brien at centre-back and Patterson at right-back. Liam Mogan 22 Posted 19/03/2025 at 18:41:59 Mike 21 - The problem with trying new things (which I'm not against) is that if we don't win, then the reaction can be severe. The Live Forum is the most extreme example of this.If the manager gives players opportunities and we lose/ draw then he'll get pelters. It's very rare now that managers have any room for experimentation, even in dead rubber games. Eugene Ruane 23 Posted 19/03/2025 at 20:17:02 .Sorry Dave #9, it's simply a habit, something I've always done and at my age (nb: I get my pension this year) I reckon I'm too old to change my habits now.Btw, talking of pensions, my financial advisor said to me earlier "Looking at your portfolio, I think you should have enough money to last you the rest of your life."This made me feel very relieved until he added "As long as you're dead by next Tuesday."(I'm here all week...but...er...maybe not next week) Ian Bennett 24 Posted 19/03/2025 at 20:22:49 Any views on Christian Norguaard on a free from Brentford? Premier League experience and they usually play decent football.Defensive midfielder, 31, with 187 appearances, scoring 12 goals. Dave Abrahams 25 Posted 19/03/2025 at 20:27:48 .No problem Eugene (23) I was just laughing at myself for trying to get rid of it, Im getting on a bit myself and it looks like Mike @(10) thinks were losing the plot a bit, but Mike Im in complete agreement about Alcaraz and think wed be mad not to sign him as quick as possible and I wouldnt mind betting that Eugene agrees with you as well. Eugene Ruane 26 Posted 19/03/2025 at 21:05:02 . Dave #25 "..and I wouldn't mind betting that Eugene agrees with you as well."100%!Currently Alcaraz and Ndiaye are (imo) the only actual..um..footballers (?) we've got. What do I mean by 'footballers'?Crafty, quick thinking, can pick passes, can hit the target, have good feet, etc. We've decent centre-halves and the rest definitely 'put a shift in' (to use an awful Shearer-ism) but we're short on brains, guile, skill… so I'd deffo sign him. Robert Tressell 27 Posted 19/03/2025 at 21:22:20 Ian # 24, I think Brentford have an option for a further year with Norgaard so probably not free. He's okay. Does boring things well but that's about it. Would be great if we had a vibrant young attacking side who needed a steady Eddie / experienced head to hold it all together. But that's not really us right now... Ian Bennett 28 Posted 19/03/2025 at 21:28:02 I've one for you 😂. 17 goal involvements in 34 games from central midfield. Liam Mogan 29 Posted 19/03/2025 at 21:29:11 Not only are he and Ndiaye the best footballers in the squad, but they also have that little bit of desire, devilment, edge that we have often lacked. I'd sign him in a heartbeat, even based on the very little we have seen. Mike Gaynes 30 Posted 19/03/2025 at 21:34:20 Looks like it's unanimous.Who's making up the SIGN CHARLY NOW banner for the next home match? Dave Abrahams 31 Posted 19/03/2025 at 21:36:31 Eugene (26). Yes, I'd love to see a few more with the quality of Ndiaye and Alcaraz — maybe in the near future. Liam Mogan 32 Posted 19/03/2025 at 21:37:09 I hope he starts in the derby as he looks to me like he couldn't give a toss about reputations or Norwegian Wood atmospheres. Craig Scott 33 Posted 19/03/2025 at 23:46:56 I think he is worth signing based on his performances so far and the apparent fee makes it worthwhile given our financial situation in the summer. But I'd temper the excitement about him that some on here are waxing lyrical about. I've read enough premature excitement from posters in the past over players like Calvert-Lewin, Demarai Gray, Onana and Gordon none of whom I'd rate as going on to create great things. It's too soon to gauge how valuable he will be. I like his appetite to run at the opposition and think he will make a contribution, but I don't see him as being a real star. Alan J Thompson 34 Posted 20/03/2025 at 05:17:01 Eugene (#26);Any relation to John Ruane who wrote and worked on movies in Oz? Eugene Ruane 35 Posted 20/03/2025 at 11:04:00 Alan #34, John Ruane's not someone I'm familiar with as an actual relative, but I suppose it's possible as many Ruanes (most?) seem to have originated in Mayo, Ireland (my dad's side originate from Kiltimagh in Mayo). Actually I worked for 8 years in Dublin and when the census was released there one year, I discovered that at the time of the famine, dozens and dozens with the surname 'Ruane' were sent (by the British obvs) from Ireland to Australia (Van Dieman's Land?) to penal colonies, often for sheep stealing (guessing that was for food but with these rural types, who knows - attempts Benny Hill expression). John Raftery 36 Posted 20/03/2025 at 23:01:22 The Athletic reported that we will be obligated to buy Charly if he makes nine starts. Thus far he has made three. I think that's where the six mentioned in some reports comes from. I will be very surprised if he gets nine starts. That would take the matter out of the club's hands and leave us no option but to sign him. What for instance if he picked up a long-term injury after reaching the threshold? Or a better player becomes available at a cheaper price? The club will sensibly let the loan period pan out before deciding if the player meets our needs. Brian Williams 37 Posted 20/03/2025 at 23:17:20 The Athletic's wrong. It was initially thought it was nine but that was incorrect. It's six and has always been six from the start of his loan. Brian Williams 38 Posted 20/03/2025 at 23:27:12 Previous Reports:It was previously reported that the purchase obligation would activate after eight appearances, but the current information indicates that it is six starts. The loan deal will become permanent if the Argentine midfielder starts six games and plays 45 minutes in six other games.
