Season › 2024-25 › News David Moyes issues reminder that Everton ‘hold the cards’ on Jarrad Branthwaite’s future Anjishnu Roy 11/04/2025 60comments | Jump to last Everton boss David Moyes sounded out his intention of keeping Jarrad Branthwaite and believes the club ‘holds the cards’ on his future despite constant transfer speculation. The young defender has been a rock at the back since Moyes took over in January. Branthwaite was the subject of two unsuccessful bids from Manchester United last season and they have continued to maintain their interest in him. He has also been on the radar of top clubs and rumours of a big money move this summer continue to float in media outlets. Moyes, however, is determined to keep his star defender. “Good players will always be linked with moves away, especially good young players,” he said in Friday’s news conference before Everton face Nottingham Forest. “But you have to remember Jarrad’s got a three-year contract left, he’s got two years and a year’s option so if anything Everton hold all the cards regarding that player.” “But I have to also say over the journey I’ve had over many years at Everton we’ve had to sell different players from Wayne Rooney to Mikel Arteta to Joleon Lescott. “Apart from being a football manager, especially at certain clubs you have to sell on the journey to try and build as well. But I wouldn’t think that Jarrad one of the players I would want to lose, that’s for sure.” Everton, who are 15 points above the drop zone thanks to a resurgent form where they went nine matches unbeaten under Moyes, are starting to look ahead. Work has already begun on the recruitment as the Blues approach a critical summer transfer window and a rebuild could be on the cards. Including players on loan, Everton have 15 players who are set to be out of contract this summer but all decisions on player renewals are on hold until safety has been mathematically ensured. “We’ve started to look forward,” Moyes said. ‘First and foremost, the job is to make sure we’re a Premier League club. If we weren’t, then obviously things would be completely different but I believe now that we’ve probably got enough points to be a Premier League club. Mathematically, that isn’t completely correct but we are starting to plan, starting to look forward. “We’ll talk about the players’ contracts probably when we are mathematically safe because then at least we can start to understand exactly what the finances will look like. So hopefully, in a week or two’s time, we’ll be able to start looking at players’ contracts and what we’re going to do.” Reader Comments (60) Note: the following content is not moderated or vetted by the site owners at the time of submission. Eric Myles 2 Posted 11/04/2025 at 17:08:37 Is this a way of saying "he's available, but you'll have to meet our asking price"? Brian Williams 3 Posted 11/04/2025 at 17:22:32 Or maybe you could just take him at face value and believe it's a way of saying exactly what he said! Eric Myles 4 Posted 11/04/2025 at 17:42:01 But what he's said Brian is:Everton hold Brainthwaite's 3-year contract.I've had to sell players before that I wanted to keep.I wouldn't want to sell Branthwaite. We'll have to look at the finances. Danny O'Neill 5 Posted 11/04/2025 at 17:49:02 I'd say he's being honest. He doesn't want to lose him, but if the club decide it is necessary to reinvest in the squad, then it could happen.I hope not, Jarrad can be a big part of our immediate future. Eric Myles 6 Posted 11/04/2025 at 17:53:01 That could be said of a lot of our sold players, Danny, Rooney in particular. So let's hope the new owners have a different view on how to achieve progress with the club than Chairman Bill had. Alan McGuffog 7 Posted 11/04/2025 at 18:36:30 If he's sold, he's sold. The nature of football, always has been. We used to be the predator, remember? All I ask is that we don't give our talent away as we have in the past. I note, okay only gossip, that the crowd across the park will let Doak go. For £30M. Go figure! Josh Horne 8 Posted 11/04/2025 at 18:52:34 What does "a year option" mean? Raymond Fox 9 Posted 11/04/2025 at 18:53:31 I think he will be sold, we have O'Brien standing by.Our defence has done a great job and it will be a risk to sell Branthwaite but I think the excuse will be "We need the money". Paul Ferry 10 Posted 11/04/2025 at 19:40:04 I wish that he had not mentioned Rooney, Arteta, and Lescott.Just that familiar tune. Si Cooper 11 Posted 11/04/2025 at 19:45:29 “If he's sold he's sold. The nature of football, always has been.”Well, yes, Alan, but there have also always been examples of players not always needing to move ever ‘upwards' and at double quick pace.“I think he will be sold, we have O'Brien standing by.”My preference for the central defensive partnership for next season (well at some point during it at least) is O'Brien with Branthwaite. I'm not giving up on that idea yet, Raymond.O'Brien hasn't even shown he can play on the left (Tarkowski would stay right as the ‘senior' partner, wouldn't he?) plus I think both will easily surpass James Tarkowski as all-round centre-backs. Dave Abrahams 12 Posted 11/04/2025 at 20:00:18 Si (11), I will be very pleasantly surprised by O'Brien if he will easily surpass Tarkowski as an all-round centre-back. Si Cooper 13 Posted 11/04/2025 at 20:51:16 Dave (11), I guess its what you think they should already be capable of. Is it ‘easily or ‘surpass you have a problem with?To me James is a very capable ‘physical player who leads the way in putting his body on the line when it comes to blocking and both aerial and grounded challenges. He is, however, a fully mature player and already at the very peak of his capability.I think if both Jarrad and Jake can at least equal his rugged competitiveness when tackling, heading and heading (and I havent seen anything to make me doubt they could when properly mature) they could both out do him in terms of mobility and distribution, which would add up to better all-round players in my book. Where do you see them falling short?Maybe I should caveat my post by stating if I were ever to be envious of any others teams centre-back pairings it would be Hansen / Lawrenson well ahead of Pallister / Bruce. Peter Mills 14 Posted 11/04/2025 at 22:01:55 Jarrad is one of the most valuable English players there is. We have seen him, he is very, very good now, he will improve. Absolutely no doubt.I hope we hold onto him, and he holds onto us. If not, it has to be for top dollar, in excess of £70M. Plus add-ons. Especially if that rat at Utd, or the rs, are after him. Mike Gaynes 15 Posted 11/04/2025 at 22:22:08 Much as we and Davy would like to think so, the club does not hold all the cards. Not even close.Certainly if United come in for Jarrad at £70m as Pete speculates, we can tell them to go pound sand and probably hang on to him.But if it's Barcelona or Real Madrid (both have been rumoured), forget it. The young man will want to go and we will have to let him. The ultimate high card is his own. Tony Abrahams 16 Posted 11/04/2025 at 22:24:09 Hes the jewel in our crown and a player who can help take us to the next level so hopefully Branthwaite stays an Everton player for a long time.I dont think Dave, sees them falling short Si, but more that it sounds like he rates Tarkowski, so will just be pleasantly surprised if OBrien easily surpasses him as an all round centre back.Branthwaite has had a difficult season but I think the kid has shown his class, and will have made Tuchel aware of his talent, in our last two games against first and second in the table. Tom Bowers 17 Posted 11/04/2025 at 22:32:26 Obviously some players will be moved on in the Summer for different reasons but we all hope Jarred is the exception. If money is not freely available for some new players especially on offense then Everton may have no option. It has been noticeable that Everton defensively have been pretty sound but the injuries to DCL, Chermitti and Broja have not helped matters and then again none of those three have set the world alight from what we have seen. Ndiaye has been exceptional and needs to be kept at all costs. Si Cooper 18 Posted 11/04/2025 at 22:40:05 Tony, I like Tarks because he is a whole-hearted player and has been a stalwart during a period when lesser players could easily have crumbled.I am harsh in who I consider to be absolute top level players and he doesnt quite make it for me. The younger lads have, in my view, some better attributes which means they could both surpass him as long as they otherwise match his best traits. I am confident, from what I have already seen, that they can / will tackle both fiercely and smartly, throw their bodies in the path of ‘rockets, and use their ‘heads in any way necessary. Tony Abrahams 19 Posted 11/04/2025 at 23:09:45 I would expect that Dave would agree with you on your assessment of Tarkowski, Si.I have been very pleasantly surprised by OBrien, at fullback, because my first impression inside the stadium when I was watched him was that he looked badly out of place playing in that position.Hes adapted and hes grown and I think a large part of this is because he has got a bit of composure, so Im looking forward to seeing how he performs in his most natural position. If Tarkowski wasnt the slowest Id be excited to see how these three performed together in a back three, but maybe Im being unkind to him and I do think its intriguing to think about because they might just all complement each other. Who knows? Ryan Holroyd 20 Posted 11/04/2025 at 23:12:56 Where does Branthwaie go?Liverpool? Zero chance Real? Nah Barca? No money City? Possible United ? No chance I think hell sign a new contract Ryan Holroyd 21 Posted 11/04/2025 at 23:14:22 A years option means Everton can extend Branthwaite contract by another year Josh Horne 22 Posted 11/04/2025 at 23:27:11 Thanks Ryan. So it is basically 3 years left on his contract. I hope he stays but if he goes we should have no problem getting what he's worth. We were close to selling him for peanuts at the start of last season. I don't think replacing centre halves is that difficult really, we have had some really good ones. I'm more concerned about our lack of pace and firepower at the other end of the pitch. Mike Gaynes 23 Posted 11/04/2025 at 00:02:19 Ryan:"Real? Nah"Why not? Carlo knows Jarrad well. And he's needed. RM has had a rough year defensively -- the Arsenal game was no outlier. Alaba and Rudiger are 32. Militao and Carvahal blew out knees. I hope you're right and they don't come in for him... but... ? Martin Berry 24 Posted 12/04/2025 at 00:12:39 Its mentioned continually about Branthewaite being linked to Manchester Utd ( yawn...) but maybe there noisy neighbors may be interested and start a bidding war ?I don't think he will leave Everton for another Premier League club but if he does I hope we bleed the buyers dry.Its also great with regards to his contract, additionally why would he want to leave Everton ? especially when the glory days are on the horizon ! Colin Crooks 25 Posted 12/04/2025 at 04:46:33 I expect Jarred to really kick on next season. I feel there have been times when he has suffered "second season syndrome" this season. he's had a few mares. The injury he had at the start may have contributed. That said. His class is there for all to see. Tarkowski has been immense recently, but as each season passes. He seems to take longer to get the old engine warmed up. He must have been among the worst defenders in the league for the first dozen or so games this season. Moyes has lots of previous for getting belated tunes out of ageing defenders, but we cannot go to BMD expecting Tarks to perform consistently next season. His body is no longer up to it Mihir Ambardekar 26 Posted 12/04/2025 at 06:40:30 Branthwaite is good but replaceable. If we get 70-80 million for him, We can get at least 2-3 very good players with potential to further improve in a stable & competitive environment. Also helps us from PSR point of view. Bob Parrington 27 Posted 12/04/2025 at 08:10:44 Ryan @ 20. I do like that, mate. This is the way we should be. If the so high fly teams think he is worth a particular fortune for them, then he is for us and maybe even more. If we want to be at the top we have to build on our strengths and not cow tow to the shit head top 6 and others that want to weaken us. Terry Farrell 28 Posted 12/04/2025 at 08:12:58 Jarred is a sensational player and he will be worth approaching £100m this time next year and a full international. Hope the bent gits behind the ludicrous FFP don't force our hand because we have the money but may not be able to use it without a big sale now. Love him in our team. Sam Hoare 29 Posted 12/04/2025 at 08:42:06 We rate him highly as hes one of the few younger players weve bought recently with CL potential but the reality is that theres a lot of good young defenders around and his form has dipped a bit season.I hope he stays but other than Ndiaye hes probably our only player currently worth over £20m which is a sad indictment on the state of our squad. Much will depend on the realities of our PSR position and whether we can afford to reshape the squad this summer without selling. Lester Yip 30 Posted 12/04/2025 at 08:55:23 "If the asking price isn't met, we will not be forced to sell because time is on our side." Pay up if you want him.Only a handful of team can really afford him. See who get desperate. We need the money to rebuild the squad. So many positions without adequate cover. Andy Meighan 31 Posted 12/04/2025 at 09:07:38 I honestly think the tide is turning as regards the Top 6, yawn.Man Utd are an absolute shit show, Chelsea are very much hit and miss, Man City might come back stronger, Newcastle are inconsistent, and the likes of Bournemouth, Fulham and Brighton aren't that far behind the aforementioned teams.I didn't mention Spurs because they're another basket-case.Why can't we break into the Top 6? Good recruitment in the coming months, lovely new stadium, new owners — this is all going to attract decent players.I personally think Branthwaite will sign another contract, there's only one team at the minute head and shoulders above everyone and I'd be amazed if he crossed the park.I also forgot today's opponents but can't see them repeating this form next season, so there's places up for grabs.5 places next season in the Champions League. It sickens me, the way we had to fight tooth and nail in Moyes's first spell, play a qualifier joke and then get ripped off by a corrupt just-out-of-retirement twat of a referee. On another note, I'm going for a 1-1 draw, Branthwaite scores for us from a corner. Dave Abrahams 32 Posted 12/04/2025 at 09:54:19 I think we could make our cards stronger by asking him to sign a new contract with a good rise in pay. Raymond Fox 33 Posted 12/04/2025 at 10:09:00 He signed an improved contract in 2023, Dave, but yes, they could offer him more money again.I suppose it comes down to what Branthwaite wants to do.If he is sold, it shouldn't be less than £60M. Dave Abrahams 34 Posted 12/04/2025 at 10:10:24 Si (13), I have no problem with Branthwaite; I was talking about O'Brien — his mobility concerns me. I think he is slow turning; when he gets into stride, he's not bad… it's his initial movement getting started. I thought he could have done better with Arsenal's goalscorer last week letting him come inside and getting that shot in. I don't think he is as brave as Tarkowski in blocking and facing up to shots coming in. Mind you, Branthwaite could have done better turning away from that shot not long ago with Pickford letting it go in, in one of the recent away games. Brian Harrison 35 Posted 12/04/2025 at 10:17:12 If we ever hope to get back to challenging for trophies, we have to keep our best players. When Moyes was here first time, we had to sell to stay afloat; that's no longer the case. As Moyes said, we hold all the cards as he has at least another 2 years here and no get-out clause. I am sure we will offer him an improved deal which he has said he is happy to sign. A future Everton and England captain, he has everything: obviously excellent in the air, good range of passing ability and – even more important than the first two points – he is an excellent reader of the game. Liam Mogan 36 Posted 12/04/2025 at 10:20:31 I agree with Dave on O'Brien. I used to have a coach who was obsessed by speed over the first yard for defenders, esp centre-backs. He said it was a mixture of body shape, body positioning, reading the play and desire. Jake looks a little too 'straight on' for me and turns and reacts a little slowly. I think it's mostly related to his shape and positioning. At centre-back, you have to be able to turn both ways very quickly against quick forwards. He's done really well at full-back and has adjusted to the position. I've noticed his starting positions and body shape have changed a lot as he's played there more. When he moves back into centre-back, he may always have problems against the smaller forwards who can turn either way and get shots off. Danny O'Neill 37 Posted 12/04/2025 at 10:20:46 Dave, I would agree. O'Brien is going to be a very good player. Both of them will be. Let's remember, we are talking about a 23- and 22-year-old respectively. That's young for a centre-back and they will only get better. It's what concerns me about not replacing Tarkowski just yet. They need that leader around them.As much as I am enthused by Jake's emergence, he does give me the odd wobble, particularly when he switches off occasionally and watches the ball go over his head. But, he's young and will make mistakes and is going to be as important a player for Everton as Branthwaite will be. Dave Abrahams 38 Posted 12/04/2025 at 10:20:49 Raymond (33),It surprised me to learn that Jarrad is on £35,000 a week, for such a potential talent and huge transfer fee, that is a very low wage — he should be on double that at the very least. I think that leaves Everton very vulnerable with the wages big clubs interested can offer. Raymond Fox 39 Posted 12/04/2025 at 10:32:15 You're right, Dave, he needs to be on more than that. I had no idea what his new contract was and I'm surprised he signed the contract for that amount. Ryan Holroyd 40 Posted 12/04/2025 at 10:52:46 I think, Mike @23, that Real Madrid will sign the Bournemouth centre-back. Plus Carlo won't be there next season. Ryan Holroyd 41 Posted 12/04/2025 at 10:54:56 Also, Branthwaite isn't ready for Real Madrid, let's be perfectly honest. John Keating 42 Posted 12/04/2025 at 11:14:22 Moyes has mentioned contracts won't be discussed until we are mathematically safe. In my opinion, as Branthwaite is already under contract, negotiating with him about a new improved long-term deal should be first on the agenda. The wages Premier League players are on are obscene; however, they are a fact of life us mere mortals have no control of.If it's correct Branthwaite is on £35k a week, then we must up it to the going rate. He is the future and we need to keep him.Getting Doucoure off the wage bill would more than pay Branthwaite.I hate to bring it up but getting Salah on £400k a week at Mordor is a steal. How much would it have cost to replace him? Plus the replacement's wages.Unfortunately, these days, £35k a week is nothing. Rob Dolby 43 Posted 12/04/2025 at 11:40:03 Ryan 20,He goes to the highest bidder.Saudi, villa, spurs, newcastle and forrest could also be added to the list.As Mike says the player is in the driving seat. Get him signed up to a new contract and give him some of the wages Keane was on.The long term planning of bringing in O'Brien looks to be good business now. He is a better footballer than I first thought. Time will tell if he is a quality centre back, reading the game, organising the line and being brave are pretty fundamental for quality cbs. I think Tarkowski has all 3 attributes whilst the other 2 young cbs need to learn from him.Think Moyes handled the question well. We are a selling club and have been for a very long time. Think us selling Keown to Arsenal was the start of it for me. Phil Roberts 44 Posted 12/04/2025 at 11:43:54 Leicester away at Brighton and Ipswich at Chelsea this weekend.Following week both at home and playing Liverpool and Arsenal. If Leicester do not WIN one of those games, they cannot catch us.Ipswich, with 2 defeats could only overtake us on Goal Diff (currently we are -5, they are -34). Then they go to Newcastle. So Moyes can probably start negotiating from 27th April. And all the above is based on us losing out next 3 games.A win today means we would already be safe (on GD) from Leicester and if Ipswich get beat from them as well. Ray Roche 45 Posted 12/04/2025 at 11:48:01 Rob, so you dont remember Catterick selling arguably our best ever player Alan Ball? What a shitstorm that would have caused if we had had social media in those days…,Weve been a selling club for years. Which ambitious club would sell their top scorer after one season because it was ‘good financial business? And I mean Lineker. Oh, Ive heard all the arguments that we won the League the seasons before he came and after he left but, come on! He was a brilliant goal scorer. James Hughes 46 Posted 12/04/2025 at 12:03:28 I think we will get at least a draw in tghe next three games Brendan McLaughlin 47 Posted 12/04/2025 at 12:08:43 FFS James #46One point from the next three games? Are you quoting Moyes? Danny O'Neill 48 Posted 12/04/2025 at 12:12:38 Beat me to it Brendan!!Ray, too young to remember, but I've heard the stories. Social media or not, I believe there was a shit storm when Alan Ball was sold in the name of "very good business".My dad still named my brother after Alan Ball. He wasn't born until 1976! Rob Dolby 49 Posted 12/04/2025 at 12:26:44 Ray 45The Alan Ball sale was before my time. Did we have to sell him to balance the books or was it due to other reasons?Lineker was sold probably because Howard thought he was getting the Barca job. He was a fantastic goal scorer and admits the Everton team he played in was the best he experienced. It wasn't because we were skint. The Keown transfer at the time made no sense other than we needed the money. Brian Harrison 50 Posted 12/04/2025 at 12:37:58 Catterick sold Ball to Arsenal after Ball had lost his temper in a training session at Bellfield and asked Eggleston who was Cattericks 2nd in command what he was supposed to do playing with this rubbish. I think it was Bally having a bad day at the office when Catterick told Ball he had done a deal to sell him to Arsenal Ball begged him to let him stay. For those not lucky enough to see Bally he was perpetual motion never stopped and a brilliant player, and wasnt slow to chastise anyone who wasnt giving their all. I used to feel sorry for Joe Royle bally never gave him a minutes peace, but it helped Joe become the best Centre Forward in Britain.Players like Ball don't come round very often, he won everything there was to win in the game, Josh Horne 51 Posted 12/04/2025 at 13:01:15 Lineker was.one of the best strikers in the world but could not play in Europe because of the ban on English clubs. There was no chance we could have kept him. Colin Malone 52 Posted 12/04/2025 at 13:02:04 Sorry but Doucoure is my pet hate at this moment. His work off the ball is zilch, how many tackles does he make? How many successful passes does he make? His ball control is awful. His positional sense is terrible. Moyes. If you want to keep playing Doucoure, play him deeper and play a proper number 10. As I've said, Doucoure plays like a child chasing the ball in the playground. Please give Chemeti a game. Ray Roche 53 Posted 12/04/2025 at 13:20:15 Rob, Danny etc.,I've heard several reasons for Ball's sale, including Brian's above, but they all refer to Catterick's ‘good business'. Josh, we'll never know if we could have kept hold of Lineker, the football landscape has changed since then. It was also pre Bosman so the club held all the cards in those days and PSR hadn't been heard of. Without me checking, I don't recall the RS breaking up their side due to the ban.?Incidentally, I have just finished reading The Accidental Footballer, Pat Nevin's autobiography. He pulls no punches in his thoughts on the drinking culture in the club at that time. It would appear his professional attitude and outlook wasn't really appreciated by Kendall. Kendall was a great Everton manager first time round but he should never have been employed again after he left for a sunnier climate. Danny O'Neill 54 Posted 12/04/2025 at 13:58:01 Agree on your points on Kendall Ray.With Linekar, as well as the call of Barcelona, I have no doubt the European ban was a factor as it was for a few.The Full Members / SImod Cup substitute didn't cut it.I remember being on the Kop for a Merseyside Derby in that competiton. Tough economic times, but I think only around 25,000 present. James Hughes 55 Posted 12/04/2025 at 13:58:23 Brendan at least a draw in each of the next three games. I didn't think I needed to spell it out Dave Abrahams 56 Posted 12/04/2025 at 14:06:58 We missed Ball so did the team but it wasnt just one outburst that season it was few and I think it was after the World Cup that summer and the team started slowly after winning the league that year that his temperament and will to win got the better of him.I think it was good business with Everton doubling the money they paid for him after getting five great years from him and although he had a good career in front of him he was never again as good as he was for Everton, Arsenal sold him on while he was still a good buy and he went to Southampton where he became the first player to play more than a hundred games in the first division with four different teams. We missed him and he missed Everton and our fans, cried to the other players when he learned he was going to Arsenal while telling them “ Hes selling me”. His dad was made up when he went to Arsenal telling the Daily Express “ Hes got a great deal, a long contract and doubling his wages.I know Goodison Road was like a morgue at the home game on the Saturday after Bally left——gone but never forgotten! Brian Denton 57 Posted 12/04/2025 at 14:09:53 Brian Harrison (50),Alan Ball never won the FA Cup. Loser's medals with us and Arsenal. Josh Horne 58 Posted 12/04/2025 at 14:16:06 I don't know about breaking up the team, Ray. Lineker was the only Everton player who attracted any interest from Europe at that time. He left Everton the same summer that Ian Rush went to Juventus and Mark Hughes also went to Barcelona. That's the top three teams all selling their top strikers at the same time.Lineker himself says he never asked to leave and it was Everton's decision, although I'm sure he was happy to go. Best goalscorer for Everton that I have ever seen by some distance, league titles either side of his one season at Goodison though.Where we went wrong was not having a buy-back clause in his contract. Si Cooper 60 Posted 12/04/2025 at 14:46:47 All good points about Tarks / OBrien from Dave, Tony, Liam, Danny et al.Dont get me wrong, Im not pushing James Tarkowski out but I am stating I like what Ive seen from the younger two so far and dont see that a future partnership with promise should be so easily dismissed on the basis we are ‘all right for now.I think Jarrad is being held to an incredibly high standard. The ‘flinch / duck earlier this season was a strange one which I reviewed many times. Normally when players are worried about the ball flush in their face the reaction is more a head turn to the side and Im not sure that he wasnt just trying to adjust to get a glancing header but was completely deceived by the flight of the ball. Only the player himself will know for sure. Peter Mills 61 Posted 12/04/2025 at 20:56:56 Brian#57, Alan Ball would have had an FA Cup winners medal if it hadnt been for those brand new Pumas they were all wearing at Wembley that day.
