Season › 2024-25 › News Grahan scores 4 as Everton U21s hang on against Spurs Michael Kenrick 15/04/2025 37comments | Jump to last Tottenham Hotspur U21s 4 - 5 Everton U21s Braiden Graham hit four goals as Everton U21s gave up 4 late goals after leading 5-0 at Tottenham Hotspur. The dramatic win sealed a Premier League 2 playoff place for Paul Tait's Young Blues. The Blues had to see off a spirited late fightback from Spurs, who were reduced to 10 men on the half-hour and scored four quick goals to pile on the pressure in added time. But Braiden Graham’s four goals, two either side of the break, with a fifth from captain Reece Welch proved enough to take the Blues to the playoff stage by securing a top-16 finish after 20 games, as well as securing a return to the Premier League International Cup next season. Everton U21s: Barnsley, Dixon, Samuels-Smith, Welch, Thomas (56' Morgan), Patterson (64' Bates), Heath, Gomez (72' Boakye), Sherif, Graham (65' Beaumont-Clark), Van Schoor.Sub not Used: Forsyth Reader Comments (37) Note: the following content is not moderated or vetted by the site owners at the time of submission. Disclaimer () Dave Abrahams 1 Posted 14/04/2025 at 21:43:07 Tonight we came ahead after nearly blowing a 5-goal lead.Playing at Spurs we were winning 5-0 with 15 minutes + added on time to go.Braiden Graham had scored the first four and Reece added the fifth before Spurs scored three in the last fifteen minutes and got another one in the 96th. minute. Graham had been taken off with the score 5-0 to Everton! Dave Abrahams 2 Posted 14/04/2025 at 22:13:17 Spurs were down to 10 men after 30 minutes or so.While abroad, the U16s have won their first two games in the tournament they are playing in both 2-0wins with Nsangou scoring in todays game and being named MotM.Blue skies, nothing but Blue skies from now on! Mark Murphy 3 Posted 15/04/2025 at 08:36:44 I was at BMD for the 2nd test and I was impressed with both Graham and Welch and thought they looked the most likely to break through to the first team next season. Peter Mills 4 Posted 15/04/2025 at 10:54:31 Its a good job Spurs didnt get another, the clamour for Moyess head would have been overwhelming. Andrew Ellams 5 Posted 15/04/2025 at 10:59:36 Graham looks a talent but the gap between academy and PL is huge so they need to start looking at loaning him out sooner rather than later and let him build up experience through the divisions over 2 or 3 years. Robert Tressell 6 Posted 15/04/2025 at 11:04:28 Wouldn't be surprised if Graham gets a few mins for the first team in our final game and then gets a loan next season. He's done really well - and shows the value in the youth recruitment which Thelwell really stepped up before he left. Clarke also looking like a good player. Dave Abrahams 7 Posted 15/04/2025 at 11:39:24 Robert (6) Robert you dont own a pawn shop do you? You seem to want put quite a lot of players out on loan! Danny O'Neill 8 Posted 15/04/2025 at 11:44:49 Graham has impressed. I liked the look of Welch and the other centre backs at the test event.Dixon didn't impress, hopefully just a one off and I know Robert might not agree, but I hope we bring Harrison Armstrong back to play a part in the squad next season. Robert Tressell 9 Posted 15/04/2025 at 11:47:30 It's just how clubs develop players these days Dave - given how weak u21s football is and how hard it is to get first team minutes. Villa, for random example, have 11 players out on loan from the first team squad and 12 on loan from the u21s squad. Most of the best players in the Championship and League 1 are loan players from the Premier League. Dave Abrahams 10 Posted 15/04/2025 at 12:00:52 Robert (9) Yes that makes a lot of sense but also be a good argument for bringing back the Central League where young players stayed at home and learned to grow into football with their own club around seasoned professional players ——pause for thought ——yes it would be harder to do that at Everton——then again the Central League as a whole would be better I think and Everton FC hopefully will be getting more professional both as a business and a football club in the very near future. Dave Abrahams 11 Posted 15/04/2025 at 12:08:49 Peter (4) Peter make that Taits head and I would have been at the front of the queue! Robert Tressell 12 Posted 15/04/2025 at 12:26:11 I think most Prem Clubs would say the loan system is doing its job. It's accelerating the development of players. Take Broja for example. At 18/19 goes to play for Vitesse in the Eredivisie and hits 11 in 34 games - and gets to play against Ajax, Feyenoord, PSV and Alkmaar etc.Brilliant experience. Much better than a few minutes in dead rubber matches for Chelsea or stagnating in u21 football which doesn't do anything to develop kids. If Martin Sherif or Braiden Graham etc get the chance of a loan they should grab it with both hands.Armstrong too in my view, Danny (as you know). I am sure he would come back a better player and more mature lad if he followed Broja Branthwaite Mount Odegaard and many others for a season on loan in the Netherlands. Sam Hoare 13 Posted 15/04/2025 at 13:28:12 Yes, agree with Robert. For too long Everton have not used the loan system well and have suffered for it. Keeping players in the club may help win you a youth cup (as with Unsworth) but is ultimately not helpful to players or club.Even with players not destined for the top, loaning them out can raise their profile and help secure decent fees as with Simms and Cannon. Keeping good youngsters on bench or in U21s is usually bad for everyone and I hope that doesnt happen to Armstrong. Dave Abrahams 14 Posted 15/04/2025 at 14:09:52 Sam (13) I think quite a few young players and their agents are also realising that and once they get to 18/ 19 are on their bikes and making their own deals with other clubs while we get a compensation fee, Id keep the special ones here at Finch Farm and nurture them—— not with five/ten minutes sweeteners to keep them happy but training full time with the first team and travelling with them, starting games and getting off the bench with plenty of games time like the three or four kids who started or finished the game for City last Saturday. Robert Tressell 15 Posted 15/04/2025 at 14:35:57 Dave - one of the three City kids (McAtee) who started the game has had 2 loans before being given a chance in the first team. Another, Lewis, is so exceptional he already has 5 England caps and 18 Champions League games. Dyche's Everton gave more minutes to teenagers than about 10 other Premier League clubs last season. The reality is that clubs just don't develop players the way you describe anymore unless they are England international quality by about age 18 / 19. Dave Abrahams 16 Posted 15/04/2025 at 15:18:27 Robert (15), Fair enough over McAtee, he is countered by Lewis who has been playing in Citys first team for at least two seasons or more— has he had a loan? Or ONeill( ?) has he had a loan, think hes playing left back but doesnt look comfortable there although he has scored and provided assists in the last few games.Everton havent had any special players since Rooney although Barclay was considered to be one by plenty of fans and he was as sick as a pig when he forced to go on loan by Moyes to Leeds and I think one of the Sheffield teams.Armstrong and possibly Graham do look like they could be though lets see how they progress. Derek Taylor 17 Posted 15/04/2025 at 16:29:19 Please remind me of all the Everton 'might be's' who, in the last ten years, have returned to star in the Prem ? Mike Gaynes 18 Posted 15/04/2025 at 16:32:59 Really interesting article on Armstrong last week in The Athletic. Excerpts:...Armstrong has made an instantaneous and significant impression. It is rare that a teenage loanee plays on a regular basis in the Championship, but he has quickly become a mainstay in Eustaces side, appearing in all but one of Derbys games since signing and starting the past seven in a row.The view at Derby is that he has thrown himself into the task at hand and little so far has fazed him. He arrived with the intention of helping them stay up and has so far helped inspire improved results and performances, including a four-match winning streak, the personal highlight being his first senior goal in the 3-2 away victory against fellow relegation candidates Plymouth Argyle last month, a sweet side-footed volley that showcased high-level technical ability.....The view at Everton is that Armstrong, who is already comfortably over 6ft (183cm), is ready to compete physically at the top level. He has put on muscle since arriving at Derby and has a clear competitive edge.He can play — one neat touch and turn in midfield on Tuesday brought applause from all corners of Pride Park — but he also wants to dominate opponents. There were multiple occasions where he left a leg or arm in to make his presence known in challenges with Burnley players.“Hes been excellent,” the Derby manager told The Athletic in Tuesdays post-match press conference. “Hes maturing into a very good player. Theres still a lot that he needs to learn but hes 18 and that was his seventh start.... Its just his level of concentration. In his defensive roles, hes very good. Hes got a lovely touch and is getting more involved in our build-up play now as well.“Hes got a calming influence on the rest of the team. He knows where to put his foot on the ball and play. You can see hes being educated very well. Harrisons going to have a huge future, Im sure. Its nice that hes a part of Derby County at the moment and well keep helping him on his journey.”The writer, Paddy Boyland, speculates that Armstrong may be in the England side for the Euro U-19s in June, and that he'll be given a chance to earn a first-team place, depending who we sign this summer. For me, it's hard to imagine Moyes giving big minutes to an 18-year-old, and he might be better off with another season in the Championship. James Fletcher 19 Posted 15/04/2025 at 16:38:10 Mike (18) that's great, have been looking for some write ups on him as it'd be great if he could fill the role vacated by Doucs and give us more of a classic 10 Mike Gaynes 20 Posted 15/04/2025 at 16:42:25 James #19, the article makes clear (in a longer excerpt I didn't post) that he's a box-to-box MF rather than a 10. He's playing in the #6 role for Derby. Sam Hoare 21 Posted 15/04/2025 at 16:47:06 Dave@14 if we had any youngsters capable of starting games that would be great. Perhaps Armstrong may prove himself to Moyes in pre season where Im sure hell get a chance. I suspect though he wont yet be seen as an upgrade on Garner who was one of the better players in the Championship a few years back. The lads at City are mostly a different class to what we have and have represented England from young ages.If Armstrong got 25+ starts at Derby (or elsewhere) in Championship or Erededivisie next season I think that would be very beneficial for his development. Lets see how Moyes rates him. Robert Tressell 22 Posted 15/04/2025 at 16:47:30 Derek - do you mean after a loan or after being released (like Broadhead, Forshaw and Lundstram?)I don't think we've released anyone we really should have kept but there is a quarterly argument about Antony Robinson along those lines.Dave, since I've been watching, our top class youth products have been Ball, Jeffers, Rodwell, Barkley, Rooney, Gordon and probably Dunne (all of whom debuted at 16 or 17 I think) and maybe Robinson (who had a loan at Wigan). Unsworth, McCann, Anichebe, Hibbert, Osman all had good careers too. The world cup winners - JJK, Connolly and Dowell have all struggled (although Dowell was extremely talented). In recent years we have lost our best academy prospect - Ismail Samuels-Smith - to Chelsea, because we were skint and needed the £4.5m. Lienou and Lawrence have gone to City too. Mike Gaynes 23 Posted 15/04/2025 at 17:13:44 Robert, do we still have Samuels-Smith's twin brother? Danny O'Neill 24 Posted 15/04/2025 at 17:36:20 Someone by that name played for the U21s yesterday Mike.Off topic, but as Robert mentioned Michael Ball, he will be in St Luke's with the Everton Heritage Society before the match against City on Saturday for those interested. He will be there to meet fellow Evertonians from 1:30pm.Robert, like many, I wanted Jonjoe to succeed. I watched him more for Schalke than Everton and he just didn't have that top drawer quality. I think he's still at Hertha Berlin. Robert Tressell 25 Posted 15/04/2025 at 17:40:39 We do Mike, his twin brother Odin. Ishe is a class act and would be in our first team squad already if still at Everton. He may yet get his Chelsea debut this season. Dave Abrahams 26 Posted 15/04/2025 at 17:41:44 Mike (23) Yes he still here not sure if he is his twin though! Dave Abrahams 27 Posted 15/04/2025 at 17:51:52 Sam (21) Yes they are very good players those lads at City but they are and were competing with excellent players as well but still got through, I know there was little coming through at Everton besides the ones Robert has named.I remember Jose Baxter coming through making his debut at 16 and was around for a few years he was encouraged by Moyes who offered him a new two year contract with his wages reduced by fifty per cent, Jose packed the game in with disgust, Alan Stubbs revived his career by getting him to Oldham Ath. not long after he sold to Sheffield Unt. for a decent fee, let himself down later on but thats another story. Dave Abrahams 28 Posted 15/04/2025 at 17:55:41 Mike (23, Yes he is a twin, his contract runs out at Everton in 2026. Jay Harris 29 Posted 15/04/2025 at 18:07:01 The lad Nkounko who was supposedly destined for great things went to Chelsea and hasn't done much since. It needs a lot more than ability to succeed these days. Robert Tressell 30 Posted 15/04/2025 at 18:52:05 Nkunku is a cracking player who got unlucky with injuries and Chelsea's bizarre stockpiling of players. He's not the same as our former player Nkounkou though - who seems to be a bit part squad player for a very well assembled Frankfurt side. Sam Hoare 31 Posted 15/04/2025 at 19:10:55 Dave@27 I think also at City they were so confident of Guardiola staying that a lot of the talent was kept in house to be trained in his very specific and demanding style. That obviously has not been the case at Everton where we have lurched from manager to manager, often with quite inconsistent styles and approaches. Dave Abrahams 32 Posted 15/04/2025 at 19:36:44 Sam (31), Yes Sam I think the turnover of managers with none staying for a decent period had a big effect on most of those young players both local lads and some we paid money for—— who put their arms around Lookman and the young Eastern Europe player— his name began with a V both of whom did well when they moved on from Everton with Lookman likely to be back in the premier league next season costing quite a lot of money. Too late to be crying over spilt milk but what a bleedin period we all went through —— Thanks Kenwright, Moshiri ( who was eaten alive), Martinez, Koeman, Allardyce, and that blind as a bat chief scout Walsh —others came later but didnt have any money to spend! David Bromwell 33 Posted 15/04/2025 at 20:10:45 I really enjoy reading about our young players and do my best to follow the fortunes of those on loan. I was also very pleased when the Club brought back James Vaughan, now he was a young player whose career was hampered by a series of serious injuries. Can anyone remember him playing against Chelsea at GP and giving John Terry a torrid time ? Perhaps if the Club take a serious look at Goodison Park there may be some mileage in the idea of redeveloping the old ground as a future home for our Ladies and Youth teams. In the meantime I hope we see many more articles about our young players. Dave Williams 34 Posted 15/04/2025 at 20:16:58 Dave #32- Nicola Vlasic! Dave Abrahams 35 Posted 15/04/2025 at 20:28:07 Dave (34) Thanks Dave thats the fella, he was doing well at one time dont know where he is now. Danny O'Neill 36 Posted 15/04/2025 at 20:44:00 Playing in Serie A in Italy with Torino Dave A. Still only 27. Dave Abrahams 37 Posted 15/04/2025 at 21:23:02 Danny (36), Thanks. I think we made small profits on him and Lookman if we had managed to hold onto them we would have made a lot more!
