Martinez mulls punt on free agent Gourcuff

Everton could be interested in picking up Yoann Gourcuff who is currently without a club and therefore eligible to be signed outside of the transfer window.

The 29-year-old former France international recently left Lyon after an injury-plagued spell and is looking for a club, with Newcastle United and Rennes reportedly interested.

There are rumours that the Blues are considering offering the free agent an initial one-year contract on base wages and a pay-as-you-play bonus structure, with the option to extend by another year depending on how many games he is able to play.

Gourcuff is one of the more attractive players on the list of free agents that includes former Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar who is currently injured with a knee problem but could emerge as a target for Premier League clubs, including Everton.

Gourcuff's agent, Didier Poulmaire, has confirmed that talks are underway with Rennes and that the attacking midfielder has indicated his desire to stay in France which would give the Ligue 1 club a leg up over the Blues.

Poulmaire says that he has fielded calls from Spain recently, "but there is a desire on his part to remain in France, despite the difficulties of last year."

Update Gourcuff is expected to sign for Rennes on 8th September after agreeing terms.
