 RESERVE MATCH DETAILS, 2004-05

The section below contains team details, scorers, and brief match reports for Everton Reserves/U-21 matches during the 2004-05 Season.  Links to match reports at the Official Everton website and the icLiverpool (Echo & Daily Post) website are included when available.

 Blackburn Rovers 0 - 0 Everton

Reserves/U-21 Match No 1
Tuesday 10 August 2004
Haig Avenue, Southport

Everton: Turner; Wynne, Fox, Bosnar, Clarke; A Gerrard, Seargeant (90' S Wright), Wilson; Vaughan, Hopkins (81' Phelan), Boyle (66' Anichebe).
Subs not used: Lake, Hughes.  Scorers: None.
Yellow Cards:
  Red Cards:   Ref:   Att: 364

Steve Milne:  It's our first reserve team game tonight and the Premiership hasn't even kicked off!  I think it's going to be a long, long, long season.

Basically it was our U18 side with new boy, Eddie Bosnar, and Peter Clarke, at the heart of the Everton defence. The strike force, a couple of 16 year olds, so you won't be surprised to hear we didn't score. In fact, chances were far and few between.  The best bits:

  • 26' Cross from the right found Laurence Wilson, just on the edge of the 6yd box. His header way off target.

Half time: Blackburn Rovers 0 - 0 Everton

  • 53' From 30yds out, the new kid on the block, Eddie Bosnar, with a 20-yd run up, hit a free kick that cannoned off the wall and out for a corner.
  • 55' Paul Hopkins from 18yds out, saw his well hit shot drift past the right side of the goal.
  • 59' Yellow card - James Vaughan.
  • 67' Victor Anichebe on, Patrick Boyle off.
  • 70' From 6yds out, James Vaughan unmarked, with time on his hands, blasted the ball wide of the right hand post.
  • 79' Scott Phelan on, Paul Hopkins off.
  • 89' Sean Wright on, Christian Seargeant off.

I suppose when you look at the team line-up, that they are young kids playing in a Barclay Premiership Reserve League North Game.  It's going to be tough.  They played well but I still think it is going to be a long, long, long season.

 Everton 0 - 0 West Bromwich Albion

Reserves/U-21 Match No 2
Tuesday 17 August 2004
Haig Avenue, Southport

Everton: R Wright; Wynne, Fox, Clarke, Bosnar (51' Hughes); Phelan, Seargeant, Wilson; Chadwick, Vaughan, Boyle.
Subs not used: Lake, Anichebe, Hopkins.  Scorers: None.
Yellow Cards:
Chadwick.  Red Cards:   Ref: Mr D Birkett.  Att: 251

Steve Milne:  Another young side tonight, we had 52 min look at Eddy Bosnar, Peter Clarke, Richard Wright & Nick Chadwick the only players with any first team experience.  To be fair 0-0 was a good result; as most of the kids are our under 18's it was always going to difficult.  The best bits:

  • 3' from the right Daniel Fox with the cross, Scott Phelan on the edge of the area, controlled the ball well his right footed shot drifted wide of the post.
  • 20' this time Scott Phelan was the provider ball in from the right, Nick Chadwick with a snap shot on target, the West Brom keeper did well to get his body in the way, no Everton player following up to finish the job.
  • 22' James Vaughan has a shot 25 yards out, drifted over the ball.
  • 24' Patrick Boyle from the left finds Nick Chadwick in the box, his header just goes wide of the post.

Half Time: Everton 0 - 0 West Bromwich Albion

  • 51' Scott Phelan found himself in the area, had a snap shot straight at the keeper and he pushed it over the bar, out for a corner.
  • 52' Mark Hughes on, Eddie Bosnar off.
  • 60' Nick Chadwick yellow card.
  • 62' From 35yds out, from a mid field run, Nick Chadwick hits a long range effort, on target but straight at the keeper.

 Newcastle United 1 - 0 Everton

Reserves/U-21 Match No 3
Wednesday 1 September 2004
Kingston Park, Newcastle

Everton: R Wright; Wynne, Fox, Hughes, Clarke; Vidarsson, Vaughan, Wilson (57' Harris); Chadwick, A Gerrard, Seargeant (72' Anichebe)
Subs not used: Gallagher, S Wright, Kearney.  Scorers: None
Yellow Cards:
  Red Cards:   Ref:   Att: 439

Steve Milne:    A quieter than normal reserve team game up at Newcastle. This may have something to do with the fact that they don't have a Manager.  The best bits:

  • 11' We had a free kick from inside the area from a pass bacK which the Newcastle keeper picked up. Laurence Wilson hit a powerful shot off the wall and out for a corner.
  • 25' Nick Chadwick from 25yds out shot on target. Weak and easily saved by the keeper.
  • 36' Long range shot. Laurence Wilson well off target.

Half time: Newcastle 0 - 0 Everton

  • 47' From 20yds out, Chadwick hits the base of the post. One of a few real chances we had all night.
  • 57' On James Harris. Off Laurence Wilson
  • 69' 0-1 Peter Ramage  We go a goal down via a corner from the left.  Newcastle's first attempt hit off the line and Ramage another follow up header leaving Richard Wright no chance.
  • 72' On Victor Anichebe. Off Christian Seargeant.

Losing 1-0 wasn't a shock. We had only one striker all night apart from when Victor Anichebe came on to bolster the attack.

 Everton 2 - 2 Middlesbrough

Reserves/U-21 Match No 4
Tuesday 7 September 2004
Haig Avenue, Southport

Everton: Lake; Wynne, Fox, Clarke, Bosnar; Phelan (71' Kearney), Seargeant, Harris; Chadwick, Vaughan (46' Anichebe), Boyle (76' Fowler),
Subs not used: Gallagher, Hughes.  Scorers: Clarke, Chadwick
Yellow Cards:
Chadwick  Red Cards:   Ref: Mr T J Sim  Att: 229

Steve Milne:    Yet another young line-up.  Just two players with limited first team experience, even the keeper was a youngster.  The best bits:

  • 34' Eddie Bosnar with a speculative punt up field from the back found Chadwick on the edge of the area. Controlled the ball well using his chest, saw James Vaughan in space at the centre of the D, who hit a brilliant shot first time, putting the ball just past the bottom left hand post.
  • 36' Nick Chadwick 35yds out shoots on the turn. The ball drifted wide to the right of goal.
  • 39' Yellow card Chadwick
  • 41' 1-0 Peter Clarke  Young Scott Phelan with a cross deep into the box from the right, Clarke rose salmon like, to outjoy the Middlesbrough defence to head home his first Everton reserve team goal, much to the delight of his parents sitting next to me!

Half time: Everton 1 - 0 Middlesbrough

  • 46' On Victor Anichebe; Off James Vaughan
  • 49' 1-1 Sebastian Hines  From the edge of the area, Boro had a pretty good shot. The youngster Sean Lake, did brilliantly to stop the shot, the ball fell to the edge of the area and with Lake on the floor, Hines drilled a powerful shot into the empty goal.
  • 55' Scott Phelan with yet another great cross from the right finds Peter Clarkes head (yet again). The ball heading for the goal was somehow cleared off the line by a Middlesboro defender on the near post.
  • 70' On Alan Kearney; Off Scott Phelan
  • 74' On Andrew Fowler; Off Patrick Boyle
  • 88' 1-2 Daniel Graham  Free kick from 30yds out put into the left hand side of the Everton area.  Graham ran into space, unmarked, headed home.  Disaster.
  • 89' 2-2 Nick Chadwick  Cross from the right to the edge of the area, virtually in the middle of the D, Chadwick let fly and lashed the ball into the bottom right hand corner leaving Boro's keeper, Cario Nash, with absolutely no chance.

The last couple of minutes that the referee seemed to add on for mystery time, was excruciating, but, a draw is a draw.

 Everton 0 - 4 Sunderland

Reserves/U-21 Match No 5
Tuesday 5 October 2004
Haig Avenue, Southport

Everton: Lake; Wynne, Fox, Hughes, Bosnar; Harris, Fowler, Wilson; Chadwick, Hopkins, Seargeant.
Subs not used: Gallagher, Vidarsson, Boyle, S Wright, Anichebe.  Scorers: None.
Yellow Cards:
  Red Cards:   Ref:   Att: 223

Steve Milne:   Well, I keep saying this...  another VERY young side.  This time no Peter Clarke in the heart of the Everton defence to help out, Chadwick up front on his own with a little help from Hopkins; we were always going to struggle.

  • 11' 0-1  Thornton  Found himself with space on the edge of the area, right footed shot, saw the ball fly into the bottom left hand corner.
  • 22' 0-2  Tagart  Ball in from the right, the Everton defence just could not clear the ball away, (4 attempts) Tagart just stook a foot out to stab the ball over the line.
  • 27' Penalty, Newcastle's Johnson brought down.
  • 28' 0-3  Johnson  Johnson calmly chips the Shaun Lake as he dives to his right.

Half time Everton 0 - 3 Sunderland

  • 50' Hopkins from just inside the area, right side of the D, just over the bar.
  • 51' Hopkins again almost from the same spot, this time the shot forced the keeper to push over the bar.
  • 76' 0-4  Johnson  Long ball from the back, Johnson out paced Bosnar, rounder Lake and fired into an empty net.

Not what we came to see.

 Liverpool 0 - 1 Everton

Reserves/U-21 Match No 6
Tuesday 12 October 2004
The Racecourse, Wrexham

Everton: R Wright; Wynne, Fox, A Gerrard, Bosnar; Harris, Seargeant, Phelan; Chadwick (82' Anichebe), Hopkins, Wilson.
Subs not used: Lake, Hughes, Boyle, Vidarsson, . Scorers: Bosnar (65')
Yellow Cards:
  Red Cards:   Ref:   Att: 1,457

Steve Milne:    If I was a headline writer in the local paper, this morning it would read "GOODGUYS 1 DARKSIDE 0".  Darren Potter, a former member of the Everton Youth Academy, was on the losing side this time, while Anthony Gerrard rejoined the good guys after a month spent on loan at Accrington Stanley.  Eddy Bosnar's long-range free-kick into the bottom right corner of the goal was the only difference between the two sides tonight.   Not much on the highlights side:

  • 25' Phelan from 15 yards out made a weak shot on target, it rolled into the 'keppers arms.
  • 29' This time from 25 yards out Phelan again... but his shot just drifting over the bar.

Half Time: Liverpool 0 - 0 Everton

  • 60' Bosnar with a great last second tackle in the Everton penalty area, put the ball out for a corner.
  • 65' From goal saver to goal scorer, 25 yards out, Bosnar takes a long run up, hits it low and though the wall I think he was a bit on the happy side scoring his first reserve team goal.
  • 82' Chadwick off Anchebe on.

And Richard Wright did himself no harm at all keeping a clean sheet.  Nice to get one over them, don't you think?

 Everton 3 - 1 Aston Villa

Reserves/U-21 Match No 7
Tuesday 19 October 2004
Haig Avenue, Southport

Everton: Turner; Wynne, Fox, A Gerrard (43' Hughes), Bosnar; Harris, Seargeant, Phelan; Chadwick, McFadden (53' Vaughan), Wilson (15' Boyle).
Subs not used: Lake, Hopkins.  Scorers: McFadden (4'), Chadwick (21'), Vaughan (86').
Yellow Cards:
Chadwick (83'), Vaughan (89')  Red Cards:   Ref:   Att: 172

Steve Milne:   Another young line up tonight, although we did have James McFadden in the side and to be fair he did show his class for the 50 mins he was on the pitch.

  • 3' We had our first half chance, the ball fell to Chadwick just inside the box, his shot zipped past the far post.
  • 4' 1-0  Jamie McFadden  Just outside the D, hits a low hard shot though a pile of players in the area, keeper with no chance.
  • 6' McFadden again in the thick of the action, this time on the right side of the D, shot just off target.
  • 9' 30 yards out, a free kick, Eddy Bosnar (attempting to do another Liverpool-style free kick) long run up, this time shoots right at the keeper.
  • 19' 2-0 Nick Chadwick  Fox with a run down the left wing, puts a ball in the six-yard area, Chadwick with the glancing header, out jumping the defence.

Half-time: Everton 2 - 0 Aston Villa

  • 65' Nick Chadwick his the Villa's right post, left foot shot from outside the area.
  • 75' young Vaughan with a deep run down the right, cross into the box, Chadwick hits it first time, off target over the bar.
  • 78' 2-1 Moore  Ball in from midfield, Moore at the edge of the box, puts the ball into the bottom right corner of Turners goal.
  • 86' 3-1  James Vaughan  Aston Villa failed to clear the ball away, final ball was skyed and Vaughan was first to it , his header went in off the underside of the bar from a couple of feet.

 Manchester City 2 - 2 Everton

Reserves/U-21 Match No 8
Tuesday 26 October 2004
Sports City, Manchester

Everton: Turner; Wynne, Wilson, Bosnar, Fox; Harris, Fowler (46' Anichebe), Phelan; Vaughan (81' Vidarsson), Hopkins, Seargeant (46 Boyle)
Subs not used: Lake, S Wright.  Scorers: Vaughan (51'), (78')
Yellow Cards:
Fox (53') Red Cards:   Ref:   Att: 863

Steve Milne:   For those of you who are unaware, for the past couple of seasons, City have been playing their reserve games at non-league Hyde United.  This year, they have moved 50yds across the path from their new home City of Manchester Stadium to Sportscity which was formerly a small warm up stadium for the Commonwealth Games.  863 people braved the cold to watch a fairly good game of football. The best bits:

  • 10' 1-0  Jamie Tandy  Ball came in from the right.  Tandy got in front of the Everton defender, headed home past Iain Turner.
  • 14' Paul Hopkins had a reasonable shot on target.  Comfortably saved by Schmeichel junior.
  • 20' James Harris outside the area, another shot on target which was easily dealt with.
  • 25' Everton free kick 30yds out.  Australian Eddie Bosnar decides to do another one of his trademark long range efforts with a 15-yd run up, hits the ball low and hard, City's keeper gets down and saves whilst on the floor.  James Vaughan side-footed the rebound unbelievably past the post.

Half time: Manchester City 1 - 0 Everton

  • 45' On Victor Anichebe, off Andrew Fowler On Patrick Boyle, off Chris Sergeant
  • 51' 1-1  James Vaughan  20yds out, right side of goal, Daniel Fox dinks the ball over the City defence into the box.  James Vaughan takes his chance, hits the ball first time with a left-footed shot, ending up in the bottom left hand corner of the goal.
  • 56' Steven Wynne hits a great cross into the box, James Vaughan with a diving header sees his effort go just past the far post.
  • 66' Another Everton free kick, Eddie Bosnar style, again hard and low.  Schmeichel unable to hold onto the ball, this time no Everton to follow up.
  • 78' 1-2  James Vaughan  Victor Anichebe goes down the left, gets to the by line, squares the ball right across the front of the goal from 6 inches out (it looked like 6 ins!), James Vaughan taps the ball into the net.
  • 81' On Bjarni Vidarsson, off James Vaughan
  • 82' 2-2  Karl Bermingham  A bit of a sucker punch, ball on the Everton left, just inside the 18-yd line; Bermingham hit a speculative low drive which somehow gets under the body of Iain Turner and rolls agonisingly over the line.

 Everton 1 - 2 Birmingham City

Reserves/U-21 Match No 9
Tuesday 2 November 2004
Haig Avenue, Southport

Everton: Turner; Wynne, Fox, Hughes, Bosnar; Phelan (60' Anichebe), Seargeant, Harris (82' Boyle); Chadwick, Vaughan, Wilson.
Subs not used: Gallagher, Fowler, S Wright.  Scorers: Chadwick (75')
Yellow Cards:
Bosnar (), Vaughan (48'), Anichebe (90')  Red Cards:   Ref:   Att: #

Steve Milne:  Another night of the kids, Nick Chadwick leading the line, Eddy Bosnar in the heart of the defence.  The best bits:

  • 8' ball hit into the box, James Vaughan tried to run on to the ball, keeper came out first to clear.
  • 15' Iain Turner called into action, shot on target, pushed the ball round the post at full stretch.
  • 16' from the resulting corner, one of the Birmingham players fouled penalty.
  • 17' 0-1 Barrowman sent Turner the wrong way, put the ball low and to the left bottom corner.
  • 45' James Vaughan just inside the box, had a bit of time, more than he thought, ballooned the ball over the bar.

Half time:  Everton 0 - 1 Birmingham City

  • 56' Everton free kick, another Eddie Bosnar 30 yard effort, ermmmmm a little bit off the target.
  • 60' 0-2 Barrowman Ball route one, over the top, beat the offside trap, Barrowman cut in from the right, inside the box put the ball wide of the keeper.
  • 66' a change of tack, 25 yards out free kick this time Daniel Fox, on target but with no power on the shot.
  • 74' Everton penalty, (I think it was Chadwick fouled)
  • 75' 1-2 Nick Chadwick puts the ball to the keepers right, in the bottom corner.

 Wolverhampton Wanderers 5 - 0 Everton

Reserves/U-21 Match No 10
Wednesday 10 November 2004
Telford

Everton: Turner; Wynne, Fox, Bosnar, A Gerrard; Phelan (61' Li Tie), Hopkins, Harris (61' Boyle); Vaughan, Anichebe, Naysmith.
Subs not used: Gallagher, Wilson, Hughes.  Scorers: None.
Yellow Cards:
Turner.  Red Cards:   Ref: K G Evans  Att: 359

Steve Milne:   Never has the difference hit home more, than tonight.   We watched Arsenal reserves/under 18's beat Everton's first team 3-1 last night, then on the way home we stopped at Telford to take in our reserves who were playing Wolves.  We did have a couple of good points from the game: Naysmith played a full 90 mins, and a welcome back in a blue shirt for 30 mins to Li Tie.  Apart from that, we only had a couple of attempts at goal.  The bad bits:

  • 3' 1-0  Leon Clarke  Ball down the Everton right, Clarke took on the young right back Wynne, cut into the box, shot across the front of goal which ended up in the bottom corner.
  • 29' 2-0  Keith Andrews  From the centre of midfield, he ran straight at the Everton box and the central defenders of Bosnar and Gerard failed to get any kind of challenge on him.  His shot well taken, again ended up in the corner of the Everton goal.
  • 30' Penalty for Wolves.  Turner brings down player right in the middle of the box and was yellow-carded for the offence.
  • 31' 3-0  Leon Clarke  From the penalty spot, right footed, powered the ball past Turner who dived to his right almost getting a hand to it.
  • 44' 4-0  Leon Clarke  Once again, the Everton right was attacked.  Clarke cut in to the 18yd box.  Another low and hard shot beat the keeper at the near post, clipping the post on the way in.

Half time: Wolves 4 - 0 Everton

  • 47' 5-0  Leon Clarke  Within 2 mins, yet another goal from Clarke, only this time the difference being it was a glancing header into the top corner of Turners goal.
  • 84' My only notable note regarding Everton from well outside the box, Naysmith shot off target.
  • 90' Boyle corner, into the heart of the Wolves defence.  Bosnar with the header hit the post and bounced straight into the keepers arms.

A very unsatisfactory game.

 Everton 0 - 0 Nottingham Forest

Reserves/U-21 Match No 11
Wednesday 17 November 2004
Haig Avenue, Southport

Everton: Turner; Wynne, Fox, A Gerrard, Bosnar (45' Hughes); Naysmith, Hopkins (67' Seargeant), Harris (62' Vidarsson); Chadwick, Vaughan, Boyle.
Subs not used: Gallagher, Anichebe.   Scorers: None
Yellow Cards:
  Red Cards:   Ref:   Att: 152

Steve Milne:    Its been a while since we last played Forest in the Reserve League for some reason, they have been in the Southern section.  Well, it was an improvement from last week, 152 hardy souls decided to come to Southport rather than stay in the warm to watch England in Spain.  We could hear one lone voice booming out encouragement (it was James Vaughan's dad!).  The best bit's:

  • 13' Gerrard with our only attempt at goal in the first half, 35 yards out shot on target, easily saved by the forest keeper.
  • 27' Turner with an outstanding one handed save, at full stretch pushed the ball out for a corner.

Half Time: Everton 0 - 0 Nottingham Forest

  • 48' Our only attempt in the second half, Hughes who had been on for a couple of minutes beat the offside trap, took the ball into the box, his shot blocked by the keeper with legs/body.

Subs not used: Turner, Harris, Hughes.  Scorers: Anichebe (2')

Steve Milne:    Another night of reserve football, the kids again in action, this time vs Man Utd, who fielded a strong line-up.

  • 2' 0-1  Victor Anichebe  A great start, two mins in, the ball in from midfield Victor picked up the ball on the edge of the box, made some space just inside the area, his shot drilled low and aimed just inside nearside post.
  • 10' Naysmith with a free kick, 25/30 yards out, an almighty goal mouth scramble, Vidarsson with a final touch, the United keeper saved the shot, and a red shirt hoofed the ball away.
  • 43' 1-1  Eagles  It was coming, good football in the build up, a nifty back heal in the area by Jones, Eagles was in space and could not fail to miss.
  • 45' 2-1  Poole  Within a couple on min's we where another goal down, Richardson with a cross/shot from the right, Richard Wright palmed the shot away from under the cross bar, the ball fell to Poole who hit it on the volley from the right side of the Everton box.

Half time: Manchester United 2 - 1 Everton

  • 46' 3-1  Bosnar (og)  Ball from the left, hit with pace, Bosnar just could not do much than watch the ball fire off him into the back of the net.
  • 72' A rare Everton moment, Chadwick with a shot on the right side of the box, keeper with a easy save.
  • 78' Man Utd gave away a penalty, hand ball in the box.
  • 79' Chadwick steps up, hits the ball hard and to his right, the keeper dives the same way, at full stretch makes a save.

Eight players from our reserves played in the Under-18 game at Carrington last month, whereas just the keeper played in that fixture for Man Utd.

Anthony Gerrard saw a low 30-yard drive grabbed by West Brom keeper Tomasz Kuszczak after 15 minutes, while in the early exchanges at the other end former Tranmere Rovers midfielder Koumas struck the post with a 20-yard free-kick.  Rob Hulse also fired over before Everton fashioned two chances of their own the second of which brought the opening strike.

Keeper Kuszczak made a fine double save to deny Christian Seargeant and Li Tie, but the breakthrough came on the half-hour mark, the impressive James Vaughan sliding the ball home from close range.  After the break Everton had a chance to make it 2-0 as Laurence Wilson's volley wasn't dealt with properly by substitute goalkeeper Simon Miotto, but he managed to stop it from crossing the line at the second attempt.

West Brom continued to press for an equaliser but Everton keeper Iain Turner saved Inamoto's long-range effort and tipped over superbly from another well-struck Koumas shot with 10 minutes remaining.  The Baggies hit the post again from Hulse's header but got their equaliser as former Manchester United midfielder Wallwork drilled home from 12 yards.

Li Tie played 89 minutes of the game as he continues to prove his fitness after a broken leg but the home side were soon behind.  With 12 minutes on the clock, Jemel Johnson hit the post only for the rebound to fall nicely for Jonathan Douglas to prod home.

Everton responded well and Nick Chadwick attempted a long-range effort.  However, it wasn't long before Everton were further behind.  Gary Harkins crossed from the right and Peter Sergio was on hand to finish from close range.  Again Andy Holden's side refused to lie down and chances for Chadwick, Vidarsson and Li Tie all went begging.

Everton were the brighter of the two sides in the early part of the second half but Blackburn were soon to seal the points with a third goal.  Matt Darbyshire rose above everyone after Rovers had won a corner, leaving Turner with no chance.

Chadwick pulled a goal back with what was probably the best of the night.  The tall striker ran 30 yards before cracking home past Drench in the visitors' goal, but with just eight minutes remaining it was too little to late.

No sign of Li Tie (in China for the New Year), Eddie Bosnar (having a trial in Norway), or Anthony Gerrard.  The home side were the first to threaten in the early stages when Mark Wilson fired his shot straight at Iain Turner.  Everton soon came into the game, however, and three minutes later should have taken the lead after Vaughan had dispossessed goalkeeper Carlo Nash with a terrific challenge.  But, with the goal at his mercy, the Everton striker was too casual with his finish and Parnaby was allowed to make a fine goal-line clearance.

Vaughan made amends though on 36 minutes when he put Everton ahead.  Laurence Wilson and Bjarni Vidarsson combined effectively on the left flank and Vaughan did well to turn inside the six-yard box and fire into the corner of the net.  Goalscoring chances were few and far between on a difficult night for football.  Vaughan and Nash were both yellow carded after the keeper reacted angrily to a challenge from the goalscorer, while Stephen Wynne was off target from the edge of the box midway through the half.  Everton defended valiantly in the latter stages as Middlesbrough pressed forward and Andy Holden's men needed a fine save from Turner two minutes from time to keep out a fierce drive from Craddock.

Li Tie suffered a relapse in his road to recovery and was stretchered off at the end of the first half.  Influential midfielder Christian Seargeant will be out for around six weeks after he chipped a bone in his foot, while goalkeeper Sean Lake is still out with a hand injury.  Tie hobbled off the pitch to receive treatment from physiotherapist Matt Connery, and three minutes later his game was over, with Paul Hopkins replacing him.

Everton still managed to create the best chance of the first half in injury time.  A Daniel Fox corner found its way to James Vaughan and the striker stabbed the ball towards goal, but Jason Talbot hacked the ball clear. The Blues took the lead five minutes after the interval thanks to Laurence Wilson.  His powerfully struck free-kick from 30 yards was deflected past Andy Oakes in the Bolton goal.  Bolton pressed strongly and Turner was called into action in the 69th minute, saving well from Bedi Buval however the Everton rearguard held firm to claim victory.

Mark Brennan: I took my son, Daniel, along to Haig Avenue to watch this game something we did fairly regularly last season but 'we ain't been that much this season'....  One of the reasons we went was to watch young Mr Vaughan.  Davey Moyes (or 'Moyles' as some girlie with an MUFC shirt on called him no yorkie there then!) was sitting 10 ft away with the late arriving Mr Irvine and Ablett and entourage.  I am sure that the main reason they were there was also to see a certain James Vaughan.

  • 2 mins into the game came a decent shot from 20yds which made Roy Carroll bend over to pick it up without a sweat.
  • 15 mins before the end young James hit an angled shot from the right-hand side which warmed the hands of Mr Carroll.
  • Other than some wild swings at the ball in between time and a booking and other poor fouls, I saw nothing that would give me hope for the future. Off day? I sincerely hope so.
  • On the plus side however, I saw a young lad by the name of Harris, in the centre of midfield, who gave his heart and soul to the cause.  Refined?  Not yet... but certainly one to keep an eye on.
  • Young Mark Hughes was another outstanding player on the night. Richard Wright, it needs to be said, was also magnificent.

For a young side, they did extremely well against a very strong MUFC side which included Smith, Neville P, Kleberson, Bellion, Miller and Carroll.  0-1 was no disgrace and there is plenty to look forward to in the future; however, young Mr Vaughan, on this showing, may not be part of it.  The sparse crowd was poor, considering the hype around Vaughan and the strong MUFC side.  I travelled an hour to get there, where were the rest of you?  I never thought I would see the day that EFC were outnumbered by the opposition on a home ground, reserves or not!

Everton's youngsters had a point to prove after last week's 3-0 drubbing by Leeds and started positively with Victor Anichebe going close in the 10th minute but Leeds keeper Ashley Timms saved.  Timms was on hand again to deny Andy Fowler.

James Harris saw a shot shave a post at the start of the second half.  But Leeds's Nicky Gray, who saw one effort saved by Everton keeper Sean Lake, found the net soon after, pushing the ball over the line with his upper body.  Everton deservedly levelled as Andy Fowler headed the ball down for Victor Anichebe to blast home.

The Blues went behind in the 22nd minute after James Harris lost possession in midfield and the ball was chipped into the path of Sunderland striker Niall Flynn, who drove home powerfully.  Seven minutes later, Everton were almost level when Christian Seargeant's cross from the right was met by Paul Hopkins's overhead kick, but it went just wide.

Guillaume Plessis then beat two defenders before he hit a powerful shot from 18 yards, which Sunderland keeper Trevor Carson tipped round the post.  From the resulting corner, which was delivered by Seargeant, the ball fell to Eddy Bosnar on the 6-yd line, who looked certain to score but the Sunderland keeper again saved well.

The breakthrough came in the 37th minute when another Seargeant cross from the right again caused problems for Sunderland.  This time Victor Anichebe was the recipient and he gratefully fired home.  The Black Cats almost took the lead on 63 minutes when Leadbitter hit a low, right footed shot from 25 yards which Lake did well to save at full stretch.  Victor Anichebe, Paul Hopkins, and Patrick Boyle all had efforts saved late on.

Everton almost drew first blood when Victor Anichebe glanced a header just wide. Anichebe was again unlucky not to score when Chris Howarth saved his vicious left foot drive.  Paul Hopkins then put the Bolton keeper under pressure with a header which went just wide and then tested the visitors goal again with a low shot.

Christian Seargeant looked to have won the game in the last two minutes but again Howarth was equal to it and a draw was probably the fairest outcome.  Everton remain seventh in the table with a couple of clubs below them still to complete their matches.

The Blues took a 17th-minute lead after James gave away possession. Guillaume Plessis, making his first start for the club since his move from Lens, raced forward and held off the challenge of Paul Martin to beat Phil Palethorpe with an angled shot from 15 yards.

Two goals in five minutes in the second half gave Rovers the advantage.  James made up for his error when heading in a Paul Brown corner in the 64th minute.  Then four minutes later Davis found the target with a determined effort after beating two defenders.  It was 2-2 in the 75th minute when Paul Hopkins beat Palethorpe from close range, following a left-wing cross.

Extra-time had seemed likely until Vaughan headed in Everton's third from an Andy Fowler cross in the 86th minute.  Then the striker settled it with another header in the 90th minute from a free-kick which led to a booking for Tranmere's Oliver James.

IN front of a crowd of 505 - the biggest at Warrington for eight years - a late goal by Everton saw them reach the final of the Liverpool Senior Cup.  On a rain-sodden surface, the conditions played a part in Warrington going in front on 13 minutes.  Midfielder Terry Nestor raced onto a ball which had stuck in the mud on the edge of the box, and he took full advantage by hammering in a rising drive beyond Everton keeper Sean Lake.

But Everton drew level five minutes before the interval following a low angled drive by James Vaughan. Warrington then fell behind in the 62nd minute when Alan Kearney lashed in a superbly-struck shot.  But a brave Town battled back to draw level five minutes later following a 15-yard shot by Graeme Mitchell.

Everton clinched victory when Christian Seargeant turned in a cross by Victor Anichebe at the far post.  Everton will play Marine in the Final, after they defeated a poor Liverpool Under-19 team.

Everton's first chance came when Michael Stuart misjudged a James Connolly header but his blushes were spared when Victor Anichebe was penalised following a tussle.  Two minutes later Everton nearly broke through but a last-ditch tackle by Chris Fitzsimmons denied Christian Seargeant.  On 39 minutes Marine were lucky to escape following a goalmouth scramble but the visitors didn't have to wait long to take the lead.  On 42 minutes a free-kick was flicked on by Anichebe and Mark Hughes headed in.

Marine dominated the second half but failed to capitalise on a number of chances they created.  Everton nearly extended their lead with 15 minutes to go when again Stuart misjudged the ball leaving Anichebe to lob him but Gary Randles cleared off the line. Deep into injury time Thurston got clear but a combination of Hughes and Laurence Wilson cleared the ball off Everton's line.  So the Liverpool Senior Cup went to Everton.
