International Champions Cup set for this summer

About time we were involved in a half-decent pre season tour.

Suppose they had to announce this news to distract from the badge furore!

It is good news though, high profile and a good pre-season test.

I suppose the sponsors were looking for a cannon fodder European team and choose Everton for their renowned slow start.

I can just hear the cruel taunts from supporters of the Mississippi Oven Chips (or whatever the yank team is we'll be playing)

I think BK won some money when he bet that he could alter our badge!!

Seriously though, it is good to be involved in a high-profile tournament — as long as we don't get our backsides kicked, of course. It will be a good place for the new manager to assess his players.

BTW did anybody watch the pre-season game between Chelsea and Man City? For a friendly, it was played at quite a pace in front of 48,000 people, it was better than some of the PL games I've seen this season.

There it is: the Badge in all its glory surrounded by all those other famous badges. That's why they announced it because it would have come up on this website that Gerry kindly linked. BTW Gerry whose site is it? Is it the sponsors site or the promoters site?

The International Champions Cup is an 8-team tournament pitting some of the world's best and most prestigious football clubs against each other in a series of elimination matches to be played July 27 - August 7.

The tournament, which will be played in six US cities and one European city, will culminate with a Championship match at Miami's Sun Life Stadium on August 7.

The International Champions Cup will offer fans a chance to see the world's most successful clubs live as they compete for a coveted trophy.

No idea, Patrick...

The new tournament, which is being called the International Champions Cup, will take place all around the US, with the final at Miami's Sun Life Stadium. There will be two groups of four — Eastern and Western groups. The tournament, which has a major title sponsor and a TV deal, will be officially announced on Tuesday in Miami, with figures from several of the participating clubs on hand.

The European teams involved will be in the pre-season for their 2013-14 club campaigns.

The ICC marks the first big splash into soccer of Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross and his RSE Ventures firm, whose CEO is former New York Jets executive Matt Higgins. In October, they hired Charlie Stillitano and Jon Sheiman from CAA Sports in a deal that included the acquisition of rights to the World Football Challenge, a series of preseason exhibitions with European clubs they had organized in the US in recent years.

The World Football Challenge is now morphing into the International Champions Cup. After several years of one-off summer exhibitions, it will be a change of pace to see top teams in a tournament in which the winner takes home a trophy. In an additional wrinkle, one of this year's group games will take place in Europe.

As our American supporters might say, "Whoop whoop!" Me? I'd rather we tried to win a trophy that got us into Europe (like the FA Cup or League Cup). Pre-season tournament though? With us rockin' our new crest? — Sounds great, can't wait.

I'm having nightmares... I'm watching City v Chelsea the second game of the post-season tour of USA (live) — and guess who's in goal for City — none other than Richard Wright. It's another amazing game though. Not quite at the level of the other night but enjoyable all the same.

What has this piece of news, got to do with the (atrocious in my opinion) new badge? If you have ever needed evidence of people who simply spit bile and venom on every thread, then this surely must be it.

Playing in the US can only be a good thing, but don't that stop you finding a completely unrelated negative slant for it eh?

Patrick Murphy
33 Posted 26/05/2013 at 03:42:33
Dan why don't you take the particular poster up on this matter instead of making sweeping generalisatons? Then maybe the offending poster can address your concerns directly, have you ever been in a conversation where the subject matter on occasions drifts from one topic to another but remains broadly on the same theme? Human interaction tends not to adhere to strictly laid down lines but hey each to their own.
Gavin Ramejkis
34 Posted 26/05/2013 at 03:47:13
Dan not to put too fine a point about it, we know your sensitivities about criticising BK and Co already, the tournament due to the participants is very likely to get a whole lot of media coverage far beyond what Everton currently garner from Sky and the smaller transmissions we find ourselves on when we play the more media savvy teams. Therefore, appearing in the media with a logo that looks like something a five year old created with their left hand an d a half chewed bag of crayola crayons isn't a good image. But don't let the obvious get in the way of you bringing to bear your "how dare you say x,y or z" shield against good old Bill and Co.

Gerry (114).

That is not the only mistake on the page.... apart from saying we've won 9 European Championships (when we all know it is 10!), there are TWO, yes TWO, erroneous apostrophes in the text.....

How can we take such a competition seriously??

...and as for that badge..... Nil satis nisi...... nada?

Is this the good news? We can't even monetise this rubbish in the US as the Kitbag deal was penned by the same spaz who designed the badge. Worried about where this club is going. Lions lead by donkeys.
John Ford

Andrew #203, I think getting our name into a tournament along with some of the best in Europe is a good thing.

We're never going to make money out of merchandise sales with the deal we have in place but just maybe the lack of sales of merchandise with the new badge may lead Kitbag to cancel the deal?

Chris James
40 Posted 26/05/2013 at 06:53:54
Surely this is great news?
A high-profile tournament with some of the world's best teams.
Proper pre-season test - check.
Everton's name up with the big boys - check.
Marketing opportunity in growing US market - check.
Derek Wadeson
41 Posted 26/05/2013 at 10:54:02
Ah the new badge, aimed at a younger market. Tour aimed at expanding our profile in the US to this younger market.

How dare Everton and BK do this when all we want to do on ToffeeWeb is complain.

I hope the new coach has got a good supply of head gear to bounce of all the snide comments that will greet him.

Andrew Presly
42 Posted 26/05/2013 at 11:21:44
Derek, as Eric mentions above, the possible and pretty intangible benefits you refer to are totally negated by our deal with Kitbag. There is nothing "snide" about what critics of this board, eg me, say. It's like when the next boss Neville retired a while back, those who gave the opinion he was shit and it was a relief he's out of the side we're called "bitter and twisted"?! It's never personal, I (we) just want the absolute best for this club, in every department, at all times.

Ah, now I get it. US fans watching the tournament will not support us now, based on the fact our badge is too simple. What utter nonsense.

Looking at the other teams participating, I think this is a great opportunity for us to get some attention. I just hope we give a good account of ourselves!

Steve Smith

Dan, well said, you will never get the likes of Eugene to understand your point though. Great work by Everton – which the negative ToffeeWebbers always say they will acknowledge – and yet look at the posts above. What would these posters rather we did on pre-season? Away to Preston again?

Dan - "Ironically though, are you moaning about the fact that I am moaning about those who constantly moan? This is going to get complicated...'

'Ironically'?

Not in the least ironic - how is it ironic for a moaner to moan?

Irony would be when someone suggests they are the OPPOSITE of a moaner, yet they spend all their time moaning.

Good news though is you have a recruit in Steve Smith - who knows, this incredibly positive group who do nothing but moan, might take off.

Steve Smith
51 Posted 26/05/2013 at 13:53:27
Eugene, my point is this - the badge is a disgrace (although I understand what they are trying to do) but there are at least 4 other threads for the badge, so discuss it there. Without looking too closely, I can't imagine under Lyndons excellent piece there are any posts that say. 'Jesus that badge is awful, but hey that's good news about the pre season tour though eh?' Because that would involve giving Everton some praise outside of the scope of an article which praises them. Yet on this thread, plenty of room for the snide negative comments within a positive article.
Dan Brierley
52 Posted 26/05/2013 at 13:54:30

Alan Ross
53 Posted 26/05/2013 at 13:58:41
Kenwright would save face if he came out and said the new badge was for this tourmanent only, even if it wasn't the case. Then revert to the existing badge. It's what I would do if I was a bungling fool and had miscalulated the response to the new badge. Wouldn't it also be ironic if they won this tournament and gained some silverware after Moyes had left ?

I've just been on the website Ernie, and compared to the Madrids and Juve's of this world we look like a police squad with a beehive stuck on the front for a bit of a laugh. This tournament is going to show the Yanks that we are a amaterish embaressment of a club under this board.
Gavin Ramejkis
59 Posted 26/05/2013 at 16:23:57
The tournament isn't just about introducing ourselves to US fans Dan, missing the point again there. With the talent on offer and the fact US marketing is a damn sight greater than ours the games will have coverage beyond those shores. If you were to look at the logos the US ones stand out as minimalist and good chances modern so little history, the others obviously designed before the days of phoney tailed marketeers seeing how many of the latest industry buzzwords they can fit into a single sentence, then there is the new logo which looks plain childish and amateurish.

Just out of interest, how many evertonians have you met Gavin, that became fans due to the club crest? I personally have never heard anything about it.

And can you imagine the scenario where a lad says to his dad at his first game at Goodison 'Dad, can we go home? I don't think the clubs crest fully represents the history and heritage of this great football club, therefore I cannot be an everton supporter'? Me neither.

So stop digging a great big hole again Gav, trying to justify your view. I fully agree that the crest should not have been messed with. But I don't agree with your philosophy that it will have a detrimental effect on our club externally. When it comes to logo's, I would suggest that Nike know what they are talking about. We are going to an international football tournament with some of the most famous teams ever, not the 2013 Club Crest Lovers Convention in Worcester Civic Hall.

Have to say whoever it was that got the organizers to include us was a master stroke. With the teams involved this must be the most prestigious pre-season tournament. I much prefer us to be playing here against some of the best teams around than flogging ourselves to Asia.
Ross Edwards
67 Posted 26/05/2013 at 19:38:31
Well hey, at least we're playing teams of ability, rather than Preston and Rochdale every year. I know the others won't take it seriously but I think playing the likes of Madrid, Juve, PSG will prepare us better for a season than playing League Two teams.
I know the crest was a debacle amongst other things but credit where credit's due, great idea to play this tournament.

Not saying I am looking forward to this, but I remember we had a tour in some remote country postponed pre last season and stayed at home and done our preparations. Christ, I have never seen us play so well at the start of a season, really hit the ground running.

So there was I thinking it might be the recipe for a good start, but that was wishful thinking out the window!

Well atleast this beats the usual dour training camps to Austria every year. Maybe Man Utd will go there this year. On the flip side we'll get beaten by nearly every team. We'll once again be going out there with probably an even weaker and smaller squad, with I suspect no players arriving until 31st Aug.
