Spanish wonderkid is a coup for Martinez
Everton have completed the capture of hot Barcelona prospect Gerard Deulofeu on a season-long loan, beating out a host of competing clubs, including Sevilla, Valencia, Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham Hotspur.

Roberto Martinez's presence as manager at Goodison is believed to have been decisive for the 19 year-old who turned heads recently at the U20 World Cup in Turkey.

The teenager's agent, Gines Carvajal, was in Liverpool today finalizing the details for the loan after Deulofeu was told he could leave the Nou Camp for a year having outgrown Barcelona's B ranks.

Deulofeu's arrival is the fourth this week as Martinez moves to bolster the small squad he inherited from David Moyes. Arouna Kone, Antolin Alcaraz and Joel Robles were all acquired this week.

Deulofeu will be on holiday after his exploits in Turkey with Spain's U20 side but could link up with his new teammates for the tour of the USA in the International Champions Cup at the end of the month.

Martinez expressed his excitement at having landed the skillful Deulofeu, saying: "Gerard is a real diamond of Spanish football and a boy with incredible footballing talent and I am delighted that he has chosen to take the next step of his career with Everton.

"He is a young man with a lot of potential to be a real star and the Everton family is the perfect environment for him to progress. The warmth, patience and understanding of Goodison Park is exactly what he needs to carry on fulfilling his potential.

"The experience that we have in our dressing room will help him in his development and he will bring a completely different penetrating approach to our group.

"We understand a lot of other top clubs around Europe were interested in Gerard so it is fantastic he has joined us."

For his part, the Riudarenes-born player, whose name is pronounced "De-lo-fay-oo", told evertontv that he was really looking forward to playing in what he describes as one of the best, if not the best, leagues in the world and he can't wait to get started.
