Baines making good progress

Though there is still no definite timescale for his return, Roberto Martinez says that the early signs are that Leighton Baines' recovery from a metatarsal fracture is coming along well.

The fullback suffered the break in the Merseyside derby nine days ago and though his manager told reporters today that the injury is healing better than expected, Baines is still not anticipated to be fit again until the New Year.

"He came to the game on Saturday and he's progressing really well - better than we expected," Martinez said..

"We don't know [an exact timescale]. We all know that it could go up to six weeks. Knowing Leighton, it could be a lot closer than what we expect.

"But it's one of those situations where we'll have to take it day by day and see how quickly he can recover."

Baines was replaced by Bryan Oviedo against Stoke City on Saturday and the Costa Rican marked his first start under the new boss with a goal and an assist. He faces an altogether tougher assignment at Old Trafford on Wednesday but Martinez has pledged that Everton go into the game against the Champions intending to be themselves and not shrink from the task of improving on the Blues' awful record on that ground since 1992.
