Describing winning at Old Trafford as something "we had to do" to break the mentality that has plagued Everton teams on the grounds of the traditional "Sky Four", Roberto Martinez expressed his pride in his players after the 1-0 win over Manchester United.

"I thought we were outstanding in the manner in which we played United eye-to-eye, and then to have the nerve, the composure and the quality to keep a clean sheet and go on to win the game is just what we deserved.

"There is a real sense of pride, because we came here with a real determination to be ourselves and I think we did that.

"Collecting three points here is something we haven't done for a long time so it gives you a little bit of extra feeling that I want the fans to share. I want the fans to be extremely joyous of the mentality the players showed on he football pitch."

Martinez's preparations coming into the game were focused on positivity and resilience and he was rewarded with an outstanding team performance.

"I think it would be a crime to highlight just one player. Even the subs when they came on needed to have the right mentality. We kept the ball for long spells and even when we thought we weren't going to win, then we get the deserved goal."

The manager paid tribute to match-winner Bryan Oviedo who has had to be patient for his chance and is now making the most of it in Leighton Baines's absence.

"Bryan has been a great example of professionalism. When you get the opportunity, if you're not ready then it's going to very difficult.

Bryan has come on in the last two games and really helped the team. We want to get Leighton back as quick as we can because what we want is real good competition, but it's pleasing to see Bryan getting rewards for his hard work."
