Barkley may have a broken toe

Roberto Martinez has revealed that Ross Barkley could be out for some time with what appears to be a metatarsal fracture that could sideline him for up to six weeks.

The 20-year-old was left out of the team that beat Norwich City today and after the match Martinez confirmed that the injury he had hinted at in his pre-match press conference on Thursday could be worse than initially feared.

"We are going to assess him and it seems he is going to be out for a while, it could be broken," the Spaniard said.

"We are going to assess it to see if there was displacement or not, it is a very similar incident to the one Leighton Baines had. Before we say exactly what it is, that is the fear, that there could be a fracture in his toe."

Barkley will travel with the rest of the squad to Tenerife this week to a warm-weather training camp as Martinez takes advantage of a nine-day break before the trip to West Bromwich Albion on Monday week.

"Knowing Ross, being a young man, hopefully with the sun — a bit of vitamin D intake, it will accelerate the healing process."
