In what will hopefully be a foreshadowing of the meeting between the two clubs' senior sides on Sunday, Everton U21s beat Arsenal U21s 2-1 at Hague Avenue this evening.

Magaye Gueye put the Blues ahead with a spectacular free kick after just five minutes and the Frenchman doubled the lead early in the second half with an 18-yard effort.

Everton, who lost Conor McAleny to injury late in the first period, had their lead halved in the 67th minute when Maitland-Niles scored but Alan Stubbs's men held out for the win.

Everton: Stanek; Touray, Garbutt, Williams, Langton; Browning, Ledson, Grant, Gueye; McAleny (Dyson 40'), Long (Duffus 84')
