Martinez refuses to blame injuries

Roberto Martinez says that he and his Everton players are not using the burgeoning catalogue of injuries that has befallen the squad as an excuse for the recent stumbles in the chase for a top-fou finish.

Instead, the Catalan says that he has been impressed with the Blues' return of 24 points from 30 since the disappointing defeat at Chelsea in February.

“What our squad does highlight is just what a phenomenal season we've had to get 24 points out of the last 30 with eight injuries in the first-team,” he says in the Echo.

“We've never once used that as an excuse or felt sorry for ourselves."

Though they haven't had much direct bearing on events on the field, Martinez also argues that the experience of being involved in and around the first team squad will prove valuable to his younger players.

“On Saturday we had Ryan Ledson in the squad, he is only 16 and has an incredible future.

“Luke Garbutt managed to play and Tyias Browning was in the squad and that's what we are as a football club.”
