Gethin Jones signs a new contract

Everton U21 player Gethin Jones has signed a new two-year contract. The versatile 19-year-old, who is capable of playing in defence or midfield, is now tied to the Club until the summer of 2017.

It’s the Welshman’s second professional deal at Goodison Park, following the one-year agreement he penned last summer.

Speaking to EvertonTV, Jones revealed his new contract delight and explained how he now aims to continue the progress he made during a 2014-15 campaign that brought a first-team debut against FC Krasnodar, a loan spell in League Two with Plymouth Argyle and the opportunity to train with Chris Coleman’s Wales senior side ahead of their Euro 2016 qualifier against Belgium.

“I’m over the moon,” Jones said. “I worked hard last year to get this new contract. I’ve been working hard as long as I’ve been here – since I was 13 – and all I want to do is try and play for the first-team.

“I had a little taste of it [last season] and now I want more.

“It was a brilliant experience at Plymouth too and they got into the play-offs. It was good for me because I changed positions to centre midfield where I used to play when I was younger.

“It was good to go down there and get a few league games because it’s a lot different going out on loan compared to playing for the Under-21s.”

Can't remember his name coming up.

Anyone seen him? Opinion?

Yes I saw him and Browning get the run around against Sunderland Under 21s at Goodison Park by a kid called Whatmore.Luckily for them, he got injured and did not come out for the 2nd half.

I can't wait for him to score in the first team so we can all shout, "Get hin there" ... I'll get my coat.

He's usually pretty useful in the right back position but if Trevor is right and he did play in that Sunderland game, well yes,.he and Browning were completely wiped out. There again, in the recent U20 European International Championship Duncan Watmore again wiped everyone out and was awarded the prize of Best Player.

Watmore has won a lot of those kind of accolades actually and is highly rated around that U21/Reserve scene.

I'd be more interested in anyone who'd seen him at Plymouth playing proper football. We've a few lads who seem to have a genuine chance but Jones is a bit of an outsider. It helps that he plays in the position where we've never signed any cover for Coleman, but I'd imagine Martinez would like to loan Jones to a Championship club this season.

Seen him play at right and left back and further forward. Equally comfortable in all positions.

Most likely we will let him develop at a lower league club until he's first team ready then we will let his contract expire and let him leave.

Thanks gents. Watmore it is. I'll look for his name in the future.

So, except against Sunderland's youngster, anyone seen him have a run-out?

Watmore is a certain future star IMO and he is a big, quick, strong lad a lot like Kane of Spurs.

Pity our coaches and scouts do not find him!

I've always liked the lad. Quick, chunky right back who can get up the wing and cross the ball. Loved his loan spell and his pal Ledson can't wait to try it himself.

I thought the lad was a pretty good winger but seems he is now a right back. Haven't seen him there so can't comment but 2 years shows a bit of faith in him. We have a pretty decent crop coming through.
