Former Everton defender John Heitinga has hung up his boots at the age of 32 and will take up a coaching position at Ajax Amsterdam.

The Dutchman spent four years at Goodison Park after joining from Atletico Madrid in 2009 for 6m and was named the club's Player of the Season for one of them but eventually moved on to Fulham in Roberto Martinez's first season in charge.

A spell with Hertha Berlin followed before he returned to his first love, Ajax last year.

John Heitinga – can't we get him to teach them how to defend? He's gotta be better than what we have now.
