Joe Williams signs new Everton deal

Highly-regarded Under-23s midfielder Joe Williams has put pen to paper on a contract extension that ties him to Everton until 2020.

It was more good news for the 20-year-old who has just returned to action following a year of injury frustration and he started for the Blues' second string in their win over Southampton at Goodison Park earlier this week.

Williams, at one time a rumoured transfer target of Manchester United, suffered a knee injury in May last year and then had his attempted comeback ruined by damage to his ankle last November.

“I'm over the moon to sign a new contract,” Williams told evertontv. “I've been here since I was seven years of age and I've supported Everton all my life.

“It's been a hard year mentally and physically but I'm happy to be back playing and to sign this contract has topped it off.

Good on the lad. He's a promising talent, by all accounts, so let's hope he kicks on and stays injury-free.

Well done – Hope we see him before the end of the season.

Good luck, Joe, you've fought back from two bad injuries so you can carry on now and make the best of a new contract. You have got the ability and the bottle to have a good career with Everton. All you need is a bit of good fortune, very best wishes.

A terrific call from David Unsworth and Walsh to award a long contract for a box-to-box player who, whenever I've watched him, always gives 100% driving the Blues cause.

Good man, Joe. Great that you're signed up. Follow Tom to the 1st team. Great having such talent coming through. Is Liam Walsh the last one to get tied up to a long contract?

He's 20 and has already made his Premier League debut so to me that means he's now deemed worthy of selection before the season ends. He's a year younger than Spurs ever-present Dele Alli. Let's see it then, off him and Koeman!

I really hope the lad realises his vast potential. He's halfway there after recovering from the latest injury. Hopefully, he can get a prolonged injury-free run that culminates with playing for the first team.

Don – when did he make his first-team debut?

I think it's unlikely we'll see Joe in a first team squad this season. He's just returned from a long injury lay-off and anyone who watched the televised Sounthampton U23 game recently will have seen that he needs time to build his match fitness up. He's obviously a talented lad – but it's a crowded (mid)field.

Best of luck, lad. A contract of that length says Everton have confidence he'll come good?

Hope he gets a game real soon... more good youngsters coming through, bodes well for our future.

He hasn't played yet for the first team but hopefully he and Walsh will make the squad soon.

Dowell also should be brought into the squad. He is a rare talent and makes things happen.
