Season › 2017-18 › News Squad flies out to Holland Michael Kenrick Tuesday, 18 July, 2017 32comments | Jump to most recent Jordan Pickford, Sandro Ramirez and Cuco Martina are among the 25-man Everton squad which left for Holland on Monday afternoon. Goalkeeper Pickford and forward Sandro had been given extra time off following their participation for England and Spain respectively in the European Under-21 Championship in Poland. Dutch defender Martina also makes the trip to his homeland after his signing was confirmed on Monday. Ross Barkley has not travelled owing to the groin injury which prevented his travelling to Tanzania, neither has Ramiro Funes Mori, who is recovering from a knee injury sustained last season. The squad departed Liverpool Airport on Monday afternoon for Enschede in east Holland ahead of a pre-season friendly against FC Twente on Wednesday (6pm kick-off UK time, 7pm local time), before travelling to Belgium to take on KRC Genk on Saturday 22 July (3pm UK time, 4pm local time). Disclaimer Robert Leigh 1 Posted 18/07/2017 at 15:49:28 No Bolasie on the list either I know he isn't fit to play but just hope the Tanzania trip didn't cause any issues. Looking at the list of the squad, we do need some quality out wide why spend 㿞mill on Sigurdsson when we have enough central players? A quick winger with an eye for goal: Joel Campbell from Arsenal on the cheap? Daniel Lawrence 2 Posted 18/07/2017 at 16:09:58 Hopefully Lookman can step up? Mark Rankin 3 Posted 18/07/2017 at 16:54:49 Niasse? Joseph Terrence 4 Posted 18/07/2017 at 16:57:51 Robert, I believe the major reason for Bolasie's inclusion in the squad to Tanzania was because he is a pretty big star in Africa and has marketing appeal there. Will Mabon 5 Posted 18/07/2017 at 17:02:37 Mark "Groin injury". Robert Leigh 6 Posted 18/07/2017 at 17:09:24 I'm sure you're right Joseph - good point Terry Underwood 7 Posted 18/07/2017 at 21:03:43 Bound to be loads of blues going out for this. Have a great time guys, don't smoke anything I wouldn't smoke. Trevor McKinlay 8 Posted 18/07/2017 at 21:10:33 Interesting to look at this squad plus the U23 squad in Spain and tot up the missing:Barkley, Funes Mori, Coleman, Bolasie (injured)Browning, Galloway (on loan)Pennington (about to go on loan)Joe Williams, Tarashaj, Leandro Rodriguez, Niasse (???) Drew O'Neall 9 Posted 18/07/2017 at 21:17:25 Light up top and out wide. James Ebden 10 Posted 19/07/2017 at 11:39:35 I agree, Drew.Sandro isn't tested in the Prem, and we need a back up for Rooney in case he is injured or just looks off the pace. We have a few wide players, but not really enough depth or quality to push through a long season with top 4 aspirations and cup runs.Defense seems okay, although another top quality centre back wouldn't go a miss. Central midfield seems quite congested so plenty of competition there. Teddy Bertin 11 Posted 19/07/2017 at 12:19:15 We've not been linked with many wide players, which makes me think Koeman wants to go three at the back and gain width from wing backs (which we have 5 of now, maybe 6 if Lennon wants to get a game). The attacking quality will come from more central positions with wing backs overlapping and the forward players drifting out wide to mix things up (similar to how Liverpool and Chelsea play). We know Rooney, Sandro, Calvert-Lewin, Mirallas, Barkley and Lookman can do that job, so can Sigurdsson if he comes. If you look at it that way, then it makes sense to add another striker and another attacking midfielder rather than a winger. Perhaps another centre-back if Funes Mori is out long term as we'll need 6 players to cover those 3 positions. Probably why he's trying Besic there. Trevor McKinlay 12 Posted 19/07/2017 at 13:41:21 Williams off to Barnsley on loan. Tarashaj injured. Just Niasse and Leandro to shift now. Brian Williams 13 Posted 19/07/2017 at 14:01:46 Ashley Williams? Ooh... Dick must be on his way!!! Bob Parrington 14 Posted 19/07/2017 at 14:37:46 Brian. D'ya mean the van Dyke derivative of Dick? Brian Williams 15 Posted 19/07/2017 at 15:09:20 Yehhhhh! Steve Ferns 16 Posted 19/07/2017 at 15:45:30 James, I disagree.Sandro should play on the left of a front three. He likes to go out that side and cut in onto his favoured right foot. He scores a lot of goals from the left.As things stand, I foresee a front three of Sandro, Rooney, and Barkley. But I do think we will sign another No 9 like Dembele, Giroud or Benteke, and I expect a pacy player for the right of that three. I also cannot see Ross being here after the window closes. Steve Ferns 17 Posted 19/07/2017 at 15:51:05 Teddy, we have not played 3 at the back since Schneiderlin came. We will not play three at the back if Schneiderlin plays, not unless we have a massive injury crisis. The reason is that Schneiderlin plays in that role. He drops back to pick up the opposition Number 10. Anyone trying to play off the striker is his man. So that's the defensive duties of the 3rd centre back taken. The attacking duties are coming out of defence with the ball. Again, this is Schneiderlin's job.So what we have lost is a big tall centre back to head the ball away, but we have gained someone who is much better on the ball, can push up the pitch into a flatter midfield if necessary. It also speeds the transitions up (the time from winning the ball to the starting of an attack).I'd be amazed if we played 3 at the back again. Brian Cleveland 18 Posted 19/07/2017 at 17:23:57 Any live forum, links and team news for today's game yet? David Barks 19 Posted 19/07/2017 at 17:42:58 Yeah Brian, http://preseason.evertonfc.com/All you have to do is pay £3.99 and you're all good. Barry McNally 20 Posted 19/07/2017 at 17:43:47 Stekelenburg, Baines, Keane, Williams, Mirallas, McCarthy, Barry, Davies, Calvert-Lewin, Lookman, Kenny. Mike Kennedy 21 Posted 19/07/2017 at 17:45:26 I have been trying for an hour on that link. It keeps saying it can't connect to the SagePay page. Chris James 22 Posted 19/07/2017 at 17:51:19 Yay, again the Everton live site does nothing on Chrome... Tony Ateman 23 Posted 19/07/2017 at 17:53:15 I'm using Chrome and it's okay. Try refreshing. It worked for me. Mike Kennedy 24 Posted 19/07/2017 at 17:53:21 Link to match does not work. It keeps saying cannot contact SagePay. Brian Cleveland 25 Posted 19/07/2017 at 17:55:46 David, I can't buy it, it keeps giving me an error that it can't connect to SagePay, hence my request. I usually buy, but if they can't make it work, what can I do? Thomas Surgenor 27 Posted 19/07/2017 at 17:58:16 Brain (#25) in the same boat here! Sue Brown 28 Posted 19/07/2017 at 17:58:47 If anyone gets beIN sports we're on their HD2 channel. Unfortunately the studio guys are babbling away in Arabic but at least there are live pictures. Sue Brown 30 Posted 19/07/2017 at 18:02:48 Great, commentary is now in English. Good to see Kenny starting. Brian Cleveland 32 Posted 19/07/2017 at 18:05:12 Looks like Sue got it working... give us the secret! Lev Vellene 33 Posted 19/07/2017 at 18:06:33 Hmm, I'm logged in, I've paid my membership and I got an email reminder about how I could now watch the game for "free" an hour ago. But any link I follow asks me to buy the game, even fills out the ١.99 for me. And I think I saved my card, so I'm not going to go through with that transaction to see if they just let me in for free... Sue Brown 34 Posted 19/07/2017 at 18:15:44 beIN must be linked to OS. Snods doing the commentary. Gareth Barry really influencing the game. Still 0-0 but Lookman and Mirallas should have put us up 2-0 so far.
