Season › 2019-20 › News Tough match for U23s vs Morecambe Saturday, 20 July, 2019 4comments | Jump to most recent Morecambe 3 - 1 Everton U23s Morecambe were a little too tough of a test for Everton's U23s, winning this pre-season friendly by a score of 3-1. The second pre-season friendly for the U23s took place behind closed doors at Finch Farm. The League Two side took the lead from the penalty spot midway through the first half, before doubling their advantage in the second period when a cross from the left-back took a wicked deflection and found its way into the back of the Everton net. Morecambe chalked up a third in the 64th minute, before Blues substitute Manasse Mampala headed home 10 minutes from time after a slick move involving Bobby Carroll and Anthony Gordon. Unsworth's team contained many members of last season's U18s who have made the step up. He was very supportive in his praise of their efforts: Article continues below video content “Our young lads are learning all the time,” Unsworth said. “It was competitive and a proper game against Morecambe. “We put the pre-season programme together deliberately to stretch this young group and, at the end of pre-season, it will all be worthwhile. The players have got to be able to cope with the physicality of this level. Everything has got to be done quicker and with fewer touches. “That's exactly why we have these games, to acclimatise these players to the biggest jump in football [from Under-18s to Under-23s football]. It's a massive step up." Reader Comments (4) Note: the following content is not moderated or vetted by the site owners at the time of submission. Comments are the responsibility of the poster. Disclaimer Michael Kenrick 1 Posted 23/07/2019 at 02:42:24 So here is the video Morecambe FC shot of their visit to Finch Farm. How many Everton U23 players can you identify?Manasse Mamapala (#10) is a given — he with the big mop on top. I reckon Morgan Feeney (redhead) is playing #5. Phill Thompson 2 Posted 23/07/2019 at 10:17:01 Great find Michael, pretty ropy camera angle couldn't see many but here's a few, with a lot of “I thinks†!No 10 is Ellis Simms not Mampala, 2 is Kyle John, 5 Feeney, 7 Antony Evans, 8 is I think Bobby Carroll, 14 at left back is another “I think†call on Joe Anderson. Mampala scored the goal but I couldn't see his number. David Milner 3 Posted 23/07/2019 at 10:50:23 Looks very similar to the team that played in La Manga whilst I was there.10 is Ellis Simms, 9 is Kieron Phillips, 5 is Morgan Feeney, 2 is Kyle John, 7 is Anthony Evans, 8 looked like McKenzie Hunt not Bobby Carroll.I also spotted Con Ouzounidis, Manasse Mampala (sub) Matty Foulds was left back, Joe Anderson but I could not make out their numbers. If Morecombe can make a short video why can't Everton. Everton had a media team in La Manga & took videos & a live blog. So why can they not be bothered to do the same from Finch Farm, the media team are employees anyway. Usual lack of information for the fans. Phill Thompson 4 Posted 23/07/2019 at 15:24:00 Yep, Ouzounidis at 6 running into shot after the penalty, wasn't sure if it's Gordon or Phillips at 9, my eyes not great, Alex Denny at 4 in shot at half time, too hard to pick out in play though.
