Season › 2019-20 › News U23s beat Wolves with late winner Michael Kenrick Monday, 16 December, 2019 48comments | Jump to most recent Everton U23s 3 - 2 Wolverhampton Wanderers U23s Everton U23s take on Wolves at The Pure Stadium in Southport on Monday. Kick-off is 11 am. Unsworth's young squad has struggled this season, winning only 3 out of 11 games so far this season, and have slipped to 6th place in their defence of the hard-won PL2 title from last season. But things got off to a rocky start with the Blues giving up a goal to an incisive move down the right and accurate cross drive home from close range. But Everton rallied by the 11th minute, Simms grabbing his first after intercepting a loose ball and firing clinically into the bottom corner. And the young striker made it 2-1 before the break after Matty Foulds sent in an excellent dipping corner delivery, which was met by Joe Anderson at the back post. The defender played a first-time volleyed pass into the danger zone, where predator supreme Simms was alive to hammer a shot into the roof of the net. Article continues below video content Wolves, however, tied the game 2 minutes later and looked to secure a point but, with 10 minutes left, Kyle John strode forward and fizzed a low cross in towards Simms. Otasowie attempted to clear the danger but could only divert the ball into his own net. 3-2 to the Blues! Everton U23s: Hansen, John, Astley, Ouzounidis, Anderson, Foulds, Markelo (c), Onyango (72' Hunt), Iversen (80' Denny), Mampala (73' Charsley), Simms. Subs not Used: Tyrer. Mike Hayes 3 Posted 16/12/2019 at 10:45:34 The Pure Stadium is the new name of Southport ground Brent Stephens 4 Posted 16/12/2019 at 10:47:27 EFC website says 7.00 pm ko. Steve Ferns 5 Posted 16/12/2019 at 10:48:39 It's not the first time ToffeeWeb has listed the game as being in Stockport!I think they need to remember that Southport is a seaside resort close to Liverpool and still in Merseyside, whereas Stockport might be on the Mersey and in Cheshire, but in effect, it's practically Manchester and part of the heartland that makes up the traditional Man City fan base. Brent Stephens 6 Posted 16/12/2019 at 10:53:02 Everton switchboard confirms 7.00 pm ko tonight. Get out there, all you blues. I'll buy you all a drink. Brent Stephens 7 Posted 16/12/2019 at 12:24:07 And Wolves website says 7.00 pm ko. Steve Ferns 8 Posted 16/12/2019 at 12:26:52 Did wolves say the game was in Stockport? Brent Stephens 9 Posted 16/12/2019 at 13:05:00 Haha, Steve! No, their website guy has got an 'ology in geography. Jay Wood[BRZ] 10 Posted 16/12/2019 at 14:35:33 From the highlights of the U-18s 3-1 win over Newcastle at the weekend, anyone got the low down on Everton's number 6 Rhys Hughes who is the creator of Dobbin's second goal, as seen here?LinkVery impressive skill on the ball, run and clever pass to create the chance by Rhys. Dave Abrahams 11 Posted 16/12/2019 at 14:40:33 Brent (6), you sly dog, ‘ I'll buy you all a drink' you know I go for a bevy every Monday night, I'll serve you in mate!! Dave Abrahams 12 Posted 16/12/2019 at 14:49:59 Jay (10), Jay, Rhys is an U19 Welsh International attacking midfielder, he is a second year scholar with Everton U18's, he has played ten games, scored two and he has been booked four times in those ten games, not sure if I've seen him. Jay Wood[BRZ] 13 Posted 16/12/2019 at 15:09:16 Cheers, Dave.Oh! And I see you've got Brent's number, also! Brent Stephens 14 Posted 16/12/2019 at 17:17:52 Good man, Dave. And, Jay, if you're there, I'll also buy you a short. Jay Wood[BRZ] 15 Posted 16/12/2019 at 17:24:09 I'll meet you there Brent if yer pay me bus fare! Phill Thompson 16 Posted 16/12/2019 at 17:42:14 Jay #10, Rhys Hughes has really come into his own this season and usually captains the u18s. He played a few games last season but was largely kept out of the midfield by the combination of Iversen/Carroll/ Hunt. He's been very effective with another 2nd year Scholar Seb Quirk. Hughes is much more attack minded this year, he's scored a few too. He's been in the Wales set up since U15s, at one time we had him, Ryan Astley and two other of our Scholars Josh Hosie and Liam Higgins in the u15 squad. He's certainly got the build to progress to the U23s, then take it from there. Brent Stephens 17 Posted 16/12/2019 at 19:03:03 U23s one down in two minutes. Where is Moise Kean! Brent Stephens 18 Posted 16/12/2019 at 19:09:44 Goal from Sims who intercepted pass out of defence. Walked past defender And put it in the corner Mike Oates 19 Posted 16/12/2019 at 19:12:47 I thought they were going to show these games live on Everton Website for members. Hardly any shown now, and no commentary either. Brent Stephens 20 Posted 16/12/2019 at 19:14:10 Mike I am Carragher for the night. Everton shit Steve Ferns 21 Posted 16/12/2019 at 19:18:49 Mike, you can watch the game live on the Wolves website. Link You need to register though.Derby County have a very impressive media output. For example they had a whole Sky Sports style setup with Rooney in for one of their matches. Can someone explain to me why we are amateur hour? Correct me if I'm wrong, my american friends, but don't you have better than this for "college" sports? So why can't we get our act together? Brent Stephens 22 Posted 16/12/2019 at 19:33:51 Corner. Anderson knock back. Simms tap I'm. Steve Ferns 23 Posted 16/12/2019 at 19:34:18 2-1 Simms. He's been excellent. Phill Thompson 24 Posted 16/12/2019 at 19:35:36 Simms with his second to put us 2-1. He's been very impressive tonight, not just his goals but the way he's been running onto the ball, using his strength well. Brent Stephens 25 Posted 16/12/2019 at 19:37:13 Goal conceded. Long range shot. Keeper let it go under his body. Steve Ferns 26 Posted 16/12/2019 at 19:37:53 Terrible goal Brent. Keeper should have had it. Brent Stephens 27 Posted 16/12/2019 at 19:43:04 Hope you didn't go to Stockport Steve! Phill Thompson 28 Posted 16/12/2019 at 19:44:31 Too many keepers being used at this level, I suppose we should give them all a chance, don't think Hansen has played much recently, maybe rusty for that goal. Tyrer has generally looked the better GK for me. Steve Ferns 29 Posted 16/12/2019 at 19:45:07 Watching the game outside County's ground in the car park on my iPad. I thought it was my lucky day when I had a choice of spaces Brent! On a serious note, any idea why Everton are missing a sub? Steve Ferns 30 Posted 16/12/2019 at 19:46:01 Phill, I think TW's own Harry Tyrer is the better keeper. Brent Stephens 31 Posted 16/12/2019 at 19:56:46 Steve no idea on why4 subs. I offered but turned me down. A weakened side. Missing Gibson Feeney Beni Adeniran Gordon Evans. But Simms looks as he's getting stronger and not getting muscled out of things as he was earlier in season. Phill Thompson 32 Posted 16/12/2019 at 19:58:43 Steve #29, an odd one 3 outfield subs. We obviously have a number of injuries, Gibson, Feeney but I'm not aware of the likes of Adeniran and Evans being injured. maybe they'll be in the Carabao whatsit squad on Wednesday? We've got defence and mid field covered on the bench, maybe they don't want to overplay the likes of Dobbin by having him in the squad. Steve Ferns 33 Posted 16/12/2019 at 20:00:20 Brent, you'd be an ideal overage player eh? Old head and young legs and all that!I think Gordon might get a game on Wednesday. At long last. Adeniran must be needed too. But I can't see him starting. Phill Thompson 34 Posted 16/12/2019 at 20:01:40 Kyle John is having a good game as right wing back. It's a big difference when an ex winger plays wing back compared to a defender. Steve Ferns 35 Posted 16/12/2019 at 20:06:05 Yeah Phill. I like Kyle John. What about Mampala? Never seen him have a good game so don't get why he gets a game.Ellis Simms should have shot there for his Hattrick and he was easily handled. Steve Ferns 36 Posted 16/12/2019 at 20:37:45 Great work from Kyle John and a lovely cross to force an own goal. 3-2 Everton. Steve Ferns 37 Posted 16/12/2019 at 20:55:23 Won 3-2. Not a vintage performance.Simms was good early on but faded. Midfield was industrious. Young Tyler is a coming force and it's easy to forget he's still 16.Best player on the pitch was Kyle John who was a constant threat haring up and down the wing all game. He showed he was human and tired at the end.Good win against a poor side and hopefully that'll give the blues some confidence and we can get back into mid table and settle the side. Phill Thompson 38 Posted 16/12/2019 at 21:09:03 Well I enjoyed that, and I've been moaning all season that the U23s ( and first team) never come from behind and win.Steve, yep agree with that. John has only been a full back for about 18 months having been converted from a midfield/ winger role in the u18s, so he's still learning defensively but he's got the pace and skill that a modern full back needs. I like the way Simms is improving all the time, he got criticised last season for not coping in the few U23s games he played, but now he's a handfull physically and with his pace, allbeit a still raw player with hopefully more development to come. Steve Ferns 39 Posted 16/12/2019 at 21:11:00 Phill, I think Simms is developing rapidly. I hope that he is too good for the u23s by the end of the season. The question then be first team or loan. I'd hope for first team (if he's good enough!). Justin Doone 40 Posted 16/12/2019 at 21:53:50 Good win but no need to rush young players. Just because a player has a good season doesn't mean they need to step up.What they need to do is keep improving, progressing, developing and when consistent enough move up. We have a year under the under age gap to ensure promising players are not over crowded because they need game time. Love young Davies and Holgate in midfield but that doesn't mean they are good enough to stay consistent enough all season. Great call by Ferguson to start Holgate as a 3rd CB but to push up as a CDM.Likewise Richarlison CF or LW? Keep them guessing. Steve Ferns 41 Posted 17/12/2019 at 12:31:01 Justin there was two possibles in that side last night. Firstly the energetic right back Kyle John, who as described above, is a converted winger. He is only 18. He has an awful lot to learn, but he has pace and stamina and his crossing was great. But dare I say it, he doesn't look on the level of Jonjo Kenny. The other is Tyler Onyango. He is 16, he's tall and gangly. This and his position in central midfield makes it obvious to compare him to Patrick Vieira. Tyler doesn't stand out, but he's a 16 year old midfielder playing at u23 level. That he does not look out of his depth tells me how good he is. He needs to work hard and keep developing. He also needs to keep growing and to be a proper big tall midfielder to maintain his strengths in the adult game. Ryan Astley is highly touted but I did not think he had a good game at centre-half. Matty Foulds is now reaching the point where he needs to leave to further his career. Gibson and Feeney were both injured and missing. Jay Wood[BRZ] 42 Posted 17/12/2019 at 14:14:50 The Wolves number 4 had a 'mare on our 1st and final goals. Unfortunately, our keeper didn't cover himself with glory either.I presume it was Kyle John who skipped between two Wolves players to get to the bye line and pull the ball back for the resulting own goal and winner?LinkTidy finishing by Simms for his two goals. Steve Ferns 43 Posted 17/12/2019 at 14:25:23 Yes it was Kyle John, Jay.The keeper was not Harry Tyrer, our usual keeper but Hansen. Our American born, Danish keeper, who is also very highly rated. Jay Wood[BRZ] 44 Posted 17/12/2019 at 14:34:04 I could see it wasn't Harry Tyler Steve, who always performs well when I've been able to see the games. Not sure if I've seen this lad before. The club really does need to do better to broadcast these academy games live on EvertonTV as other clubs already do, as you yourself posted earlier Steve. Phill Thompson 45 Posted 17/12/2019 at 17:43:16 I'm beginning to warm to Con Ouzounidis at centre back having been a bit dismissive of him in the past, with in my mind Astley at two years younger the better prospect. Ouzounidis has worked hard on his game, his biggest asset has always been his strength but he appeared to have a degree of clumsiness about him, he looks better now.At 20 you wonder if he's falling into the Pennington / Tyias Browning category, big strong but not good enough. His contract is up next July so he needs these chances to shine, and who knows he may turn out to be a Harry Maguire type CB Dave Abrahams 46 Posted 20/12/2019 at 19:28:49 The U23's are presently losing 1-0 to Porto who lead with an early goal from Vierra, the game is not being shown by Everton, ( again) our supporters deserve much better than this. Dave Abrahams 47 Posted 20/12/2019 at 19:32:36 Now 1-1 with a goal from Evans. Brent Stephens 48 Posted 20/12/2019 at 20:18:36 Dave, good job I live close to S'port's ground. I went expecting to see the game and the lights were out (unlike me - lights on but nobody home!).I could swear the efc website said y'day it was S'port.Keep posting on the game mate. Are you there? Where are u getting the info? Brent Stephens 49 Posted 20/12/2019 at 21:44:45 Dave, Evans had a bloody stormer a few games ago at S'Port. Absolutely brilliant. And that's a deal on the Wembley pint.
