Season › 2019-20 › News Under-23s beat Fulham in Premier League Cup Friday, 17 January, 2020 38comments | Jump to most recent Everton Under-23s held off a late challenge from Fulham in a top-of-the-group Premier League Cup clash at Southport to grab a victory that takes them top of Group B. The cup holders leapfrogged the Cottagers in the table thanks to a 4-2 victory secured with the help of two goals from Dennis Adeniran. A Zico Asare own goal had set the Blues on their way when he turned Kyle John's cross past his own goalkeeper but the visitors equalised in short order. However, Adeniran restored Everton's advantage when he converted Antony Evans's square pass before Evans himself hit the post with a free-kick shortly before half-time. Adeniran made it 3-1 with a fine finish in the second half. With Lewis Gibson and Anthony Gordon not named in the squad, David Unsworth had new signing Jarrad Branthwaite in defence alongside Morgan Feeney but, despite having a good overall game, it was the former who marred his debut by conceding the penalty from which Fulham pulled one back again through Taylor-Crossdale. Everton killed the tie late on, however, when Manassé Mampala struck to complete the scoring at 4-2. Everton U23s: Virginia, John, Foulds, Feeney, Ouzounidis (46' Iversen (62' Denny)), Branthwaite, Adeniran, Baningime, Simms, Markelo [Y] (46' Mampala), Evans. Subs not Used: Tyrer, Joe Anderson. Dave Abrahams 3 Posted 17/01/2020 at 18:28:53 Banginime is playing tonight along with the new lad from Carlisle Jarod Brantwaite, also Virginia in goal. Dave Abrahams 4 Posted 17/01/2020 at 18:33:52 Gibson not playing in above game, not on the bench, could be in the squad tomorrow or on his way back to Newcastle. Spelt Jarrad Branthwaite's name wrong @(3). Steve Ferns 5 Posted 17/01/2020 at 18:39:08 Cheers, Dave. I can't find a link, might be one on Fulham's site but you need to pay a fee. Dave Abrahams 6 Posted 17/01/2020 at 19:16:32 1-1 after fourteen mins, we scored via an own goal, don't know who scored for them, not watching, getting info off another Everton website. Dave Abrahams 7 Posted 17/01/2020 at 19:43:30 Back in front after forty three minutes, don't know who scored. Phill Thompson 8 Posted 17/01/2020 at 19:45:29 Decent feed on the OS41'Fabulous work by Evans on the goal-line when he dispossess the defender and crosses low for Adenian to finish with aplomb for the goal he deserves Phill Thompson 9 Posted 17/01/2020 at 19:46:40 https://www.evertonfc.com/match/53233/everton-fulham#blog Richard Mason 10 Posted 17/01/2020 at 19:58:41 Just reading the live match blog, it looks like Adrenian is having a really good game.Pity there isn't a stream to watch it Mike Gaynes 11 Posted 17/01/2020 at 20:10:19 Wish there was a video feed! Phill Thompson 12 Posted 17/01/2020 at 20:20:16 20:1051'It's Adeniran again! The Blues midfielder picked up a sloppy Fulham pass and powered down the right before planting a sweet finish into the corner of the net. 3-1 Mike Gaynes 13 Posted 17/01/2020 at 20:22:27 He might just find himself a place on the first-team bench next week! Robert Tressell 14 Posted 17/01/2020 at 20:25:42 What's happened with Anthony Evans? Looks the business but never near the first team and (i think) not much of an impression on loan at blackpool. Shame. Steve Shave 15 Posted 17/01/2020 at 20:29:46 How is the new lad from Carlisle playing? Steve Ferns 16 Posted 17/01/2020 at 20:33:36 Yes Steve.Nice to see Dennis Adeniran taking my comments that he's not good enough for the first team and ramming them down my throat. More please Dennis. Steve Ferns 17 Posted 17/01/2020 at 20:36:31 It's 3-2 now. Fulham scored a penalty to peg us back. Before then, the official site had this:“ 70'A remarkable piece of play! Evans collects a forward pass but his shot hits the right post and his follow up effort strikes the left post!â€Sounds worth watching this one. Per Stumo 18 Posted 17/01/2020 at 20:41:19 Iversen on at half time then clashes with Timmy Abraham (Timmy and Tammy, really?) and goes off again in the 62nd. Bad luck that.Evans and Adeniran doing well but the defence not so much by the sound of it. Fulham nearly equalized but hit the post just now. Also, no Gordon so he'll likely be on the bench tomorrow then. Steve Ferns 19 Posted 17/01/2020 at 20:50:31 Per, Tammy's full name is: Kevin Oghenetega Tamaraebi Bakumo-Abraham.Timmy's full name is: Jason Timiebi Ogheneobrucheme Bakumo-AbrahamSo it should be Kevin and Jason! John Cook 20 Posted 17/01/2020 at 20:52:48 Kampala just got a 4th for the blues John Cook 21 Posted 17/01/2020 at 20:55:50 Finished 4-2; Per Stumo 22 Posted 17/01/2020 at 20:56:52 Steve, it should be! Timmy and Tammy made me wonder if their parents are huge fans of TimTams. Final score: 4-2 Phill Thompson 23 Posted 17/01/2020 at 20:57:56 FINAL SCOREEverton 4 Fulham20:4991'FINAL SCOREEverton have surely wrapped things up with a neat finish from Mampala. 4-2 Dave Abrahams 24 Posted 17/01/2020 at 20:58:33 Robert (14), AntonyEvans, there is a good player in him, I hope we have a good look at him before making a final decision on his time at Everton, his contract is up at the end of this season. Dave Williams 25 Posted 17/01/2020 at 21:05:00 Did Simms play tonight? Dave Abrahams 26 Posted 17/01/2020 at 21:22:24 Yes, Dave he did, don't know how he played, just read the commentary. Steve Ferns 27 Posted 17/01/2020 at 21:23:13 Dave W. It appears so:“Team NewsIt's Everton v Fulham in the Premier League Cup at Southport and the Blues line-up is: Joao Virginia, Kyle John, Matthew Foulds, Morgan Feeney (c), Con Ouzounidis, Jarrad Branthwaite, Dennis Adeniran, Beni Baningime, Ellis Simms, Nathangelo Markelo, Antony Evans. Subs: Alex Denny, Harry Tyrer, Manasse Mampala, Joe Anderson, Einar Iversenâ€Dave A. I'd give Antony Evans a new one year deal. But we must loan him out this window. He needs league football. He's 20 now and he's getting to the age where he will miss the boat. He needs to be playing regularly. Brent Stephens 28 Posted 17/01/2020 at 21:29:47 Sorry Steve, Dave etc. I couldn't get to the game tonight so will now read the thread. Seems we won! Charles McCann 29 Posted 17/01/2020 at 21:34:46 Glad to see Denis do well. Looked really decent when I seen him for the first team in preseason. Time to get him back up playing with the first team! Better than Sneiderlinn and Sigurdsson anyway : ) Brent Stephens 30 Posted 17/01/2020 at 21:34:49 I guess Jarrad played CB with Foulds at LB. Phill Thompson 31 Posted 17/01/2020 at 22:17:15 Brent, it looked like a back 3 of Feeney, Ouzounidis and Branthwaite as CBs and John and Foulds as wing backs. I think I read Ouzounidis was subbed for the 2nd half so likely a back 4 then. Brent Stephens 32 Posted 17/01/2020 at 22:19:41 Ah Thanks Phill. that would make sense. That formation has been the one this season. Brent Stephens 33 Posted 17/01/2020 at 22:21:03 And last week they also reverted to a back four when Con was subbed. Dave Williams 34 Posted 17/01/2020 at 22:22:44 Mate of mine has a brother living in Carlisle who goes to all their games. He raves about Branthwaite- six feet four, strong, quick, two good feet and good with the ball- says he could be better than Stones and we have got him ridiculously cheap.Fingers crossed eh!! Steve Ferns 35 Posted 18/01/2020 at 13:23:11 Highlights are up Link Phil Smith 36 Posted 20/01/2020 at 16:05:07 Every time I see Evans, he looks class. Not the quickest, but he's got vision and his touch is pure gold. Steve Ferns 37 Posted 20/01/2020 at 16:13:19 I agree, Phil. I've always thought he's a player. As you say, great touch, great feet, his passing is exceptional (at U23 level) because of the vision you mention. But also his delivery, with his free-kicks being a lethal weapon. The sad thing is he is now 21. I fear he's stagnated. He should have gone on loan this summer to a decent Championship side. Unsworth did say he tried to get him out on loan, but it never came off. No explanation was given as to why. Unsworth promised to try and get him out in this window, but we're into well into the final 2 weeks and he's still not left.He needs a loan to have any chance to making the Everton side. Consider that Anthony Gordon is only 18 and that shows how much time he has lost. It's a real shame because the boy had talent. Mike Gaynes 38 Posted 20/01/2020 at 16:26:29 The goalposts got quite the workout in this game.Adeniran looks like a real horse -- he has developed impressively. And I've played on better pitches in my Sunday kickarounds.
